 Studies have shown most people fail to realise how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.  

 Frank and Amelia's family were put to a test, using a free app called "Moment-Screen Time Tracker". The Vascellaros-Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam--all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.  

 "Honestly. I don't feel like I'm on my phone a lot," Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent closer to four hours on his phone, which came as a shock to him. The children's times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.  

 Minneapolis-based Dr. Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members` phone use has become problematic.  

 "If we hear more than once, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phone down? Did you hear what I said?' it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives," she said.  

 Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.  

 She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. "What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people's feelings and problems—when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people," she said 

 Earthquakes happen without warning. They can happen any time of a day, at any point during the year. But don't worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people. However, it's important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening.  

 Do not go outside. You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings. If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines（输电线）.  

 Stay under a desk, table. or other strong furniture. Hold on to it. Or stay in a comer of the building. Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel or clothing. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.  

 Keep away from windows, pictures or advertisements on the wall or the building. and anything else that could fall and hurt you. Most people get injured by falling things during an earthquake, not by the shaking itself.  

 Also keep away from a fire. You could fall down and burn yourself on the fire.  

 If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it's safe. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don't drive near bridges. Try not to stop by power lines or trees. These could fall and hurt you.

It was the day of the big cross- country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route（路线） through thick evergreen forest. 

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence.

My husband, our children and I have had wonderful camping experiences over the past ten years.

Much of our thinking about health is based on wishful thinking. But science provides clear and simple advice for a healthy life. Graham Lawton explores the evidence. Graham proves that you don't have to be a health and fitness extremist to be reasonably healthy. He has rounded up the latest and strictest health research and changed it into useful advice on all the big health questions: diet, weight loss, exercise, sleep, ageing and so on. 

Graham, New Scientist feature writer, is not the common health expert. He sometimes eats fast food. He has a gym membership but rarely uses it. And he takes medicine to keep his blood pressure under control. He neither has a diet plan nor a 6-week program to keep fit and thin. 

But he does have a much better weapon: science. In a talk, Graham explains the basic science, tells people some of the secrets of science, teaches people to use the ability of judgement to tell the good from the bad, and helps them to see beyond the headlines. The talk allows people to eat healthily, lose weight, and sort the truth out from science facts. 

But he loves outdoor sports. Last year Graham cycled over 1, 200 miles and ran the same distance of 15 marathons. He often goes swimming outdoors, walks up eight flights of stairs to his desk instead of taking the lift. He eats his five copies of fruit and vegetables a day, keeps enough water in his body, and doesn't eat much meat. Despite all the bad habits, his good ones seem to be winning. Graham is 50, but his "biological age" was recently measured as 45.

As you probably know, learning a foreign language is sometimes challenging. But it can also be fun We spend hundreds of hours at school trying to get our tongues round different vocabulary and grammar in order to earn a qualification. But learning to speak a second language is more than just passing an exam—it opens doors to new opportunities, helps you to communicate with others and makes travelling overseas more satisfactory. 

It might come as a surprise that the number of teenagers learning foreign languages in UK secondary schools has dropped by 45% since the turn of the millennium. German and French have fallen the most-these languages from two of the UK's closest trading partners have declined at GCSE level. Another survey of secondary schools suggests a third of students have dropped at least one language from their GCSE exam options. There are some reasons for this, including many students' opinion that languages are difficult. Others have questioned the need for a second language when translation technology is advancing. 

Matthew Fell, chief UK policy director for business group the CBI, believes that "The decline in language learning in schools must be reversed, or else the UK will be less competitive globally and young people less prepared for the modern world. " But even for those who are eager to study another language the opportunity is being reduced. In Scotland, for example, foreign language subjects are being pressed out of many secondary school timetables with some head teachers blaming pressure on the curriculum.

However, some native English speakers have admitted the benefits of speaking another tongue Cassandra Scott, from Edinburgh, studied three languages in her final year at school. She is now a freelance translator in Edinburgh, and says "Learning languages at school really set the course for my career. "

I am a freshman at Orange High School. In 2013, I founded an organization called Love For The Elderly. So many elderly people have no one to care for them, and no one to love them. When I say this, I am talking about pure love, unconditional love that shows kindness no matter what the situations may be. 

The elderly have smoothed the pathway of success for our generation. They should be shown appreciation（感激） and kindness, but are often forgotten. I am are all of you have someone in your hearts who has been at a nursing home. Think of them while I say this; they should get the best, nothing but the best. The elderly are such an unusual group of people, and their shining wisdom can most certainly be learned from. This idea of showing appreciation to the elderly reverberated（回响） inside my head, until finally, I decided it was time to step up and make a difference. 

My love for and ability in writing led me to create an organization, where people from all across the world send nameless letters filled with kindness and joy, from Iceland, Romania, Finland, Australia, and more. I then send these letters to senior centers, and nursing homes located all across the country. To this date, I have collected over 1, 000 letters, and the reaction I have received from these organizations has been truly unbelievable.

Growing up in Ireland, Pierce Forde loved motorcycles. His 1  in it only grew as he got older.

Engineering researchers at the University of Waterloo are successfully using a robot to help keep children with learning disabilities focused on their work. This was one of the key results in a new study that also found both the youngsters and their instructors valued the positive classroom contributions made by the robot. 

"Overall, the findings demonstrate that the robot has a positive effect on students," said Dr. Kerstin Dautenhahn, a professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Educators have in recent years explored the use of social robots to help students learn, but most often, their research has focused on children with autism (孤独症). As a result, little work has been done on the use of socially assistive robots for students with learning disabilities. 

Along with two other Waterloo engineering researchers and three experts from the Learning. Disabilities Society in Vancouver, Dautenhahn decided to change this, conducting a series of tests with a small humanoid (仿人的) robot called QTrobot. 

Dautenhahn said the robot's ability to perform gestures using its head and hands, accompanied by its speech and facial features, makes it very suitable for children with learning disabilities.

Building on promising earlier research, the researchers divided 16 students with learning disabilities into two groups. In one group, students worked one on-one with an instructor only. In the other group, the students worked one-on-one with an instructor and a QTrobot. In the latter group, the instructor used a tablet to direct the robot, which then autonomously performed various activities using its speech and gestures. While the instructor controlled the sessions, the robot took over at certain times to lead the students. 

Besides introducing the session, the robot set goals and provided self-regulating strategies, if necessary. If the learning process was getting off- track, the robot used strategies such as games, riddles and physical movements to redirect the students back to the task. 

"Students who worked with the robot," Dautenhahn said, "were generally more engaged with their tasks and could complete their tasks at a higher rate compared to the students who weren't assisted by a robot.

If you've ever eaten a free doughnut (甜甜圈) on the first Friday in June, you've celebrated the Doughnut Lassies- whether you realized it or not, National Doughnut Day was established to honor the Salvation Army volunteers who fried sugary snacks for World War I soldiers on the front line.

When the US entered World War I in 1917, the Salvation Army, a charity organization, sent about 250 volunteers (who were mostly women) to France, where the American army was stationed. The plan was to bring treats and supplies as close to the front line as possible. But the closer the volunteers got to the action, the fewer resources they could access.

Margaret Sheldon and Helen Purviance were credited with bringing doughnuts to the Wester Front. They had a handful of ingredients, including flour, sugar, animal fats, baking powder and canned milk. Doughnuts were one of the few sweet foods they could make without an oven, and once they had a fire hot enough to heat the oil, they could fry them up fast. The women had the pan to cook them in, but for other parts, they had to get creative. For example, grape juice bottles became rolling pins (擀面杖) when necessary. 

Sheldon and Purviance's pan could fit seven doughnuts at a time, and on day one, they made just 150 doughnuts for the group of 800 men. The soldiers even fought over a doughnut. Then they made some changes to their operation, and eventually made 5,000 doughnuts a day. The snacks were so popular that the volunteers earned the nickname " Doughnut Lassies", while the soldiers they served were nicknamed "Doughboys".

The Doughnut Lassies' impact didn't end with World War I. The American soldiers' experiences overseas made doughnuts a commonly eaten food for them back home.
