Everyone knows what makes a good story. Our hero starts their journey as a flawed(有缺陷的) being. In scene after scene, they face challenges that push them down new paths. By the end of the talc, they overcome setbacks and become a better person in the process.

We love these plots in the novels we read but the principles of a good story offer much more than entertainment. Recent research shows that the narratives(叙述)we tell ourselves about our lives can powerfully help us recover from stress. People who generate tales of struggling and turning over a new leaf from their own lives appear to have much better mental health. Professor Dan McAdams put forward this idea and discovered that whether someone can describe having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of mental health. Another key theme involved is finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events.

McAdams invited 14 and 15-year-olds to join in an experiment to write about their experiences of failure and success. Half of them were then given extra instructions to describe the ways they had made their success a reality and how the failure had changed them for the better. Eight weeks later, members of this group reported greater persistence(坚持) and better grades in their schoolwork.

Exciting as these results are, some experts sound a few notes of caution. They worry that, hearing about the power of self-narratives, many people may feel they have to find a positive turning point in life. If they can't, they could end up feeling guilty about having somehow "failed".

Clearly, self-narratives aren't the panacea. Nevertheless, if you hope for self-improvement, you can use the findings to good effect. By recognizing ourselves as the hero at the center of our own struggles, we can all become the author of our own destiny and change ourselves for the better.

(1)、What does the research focus on?
A、The causes of stress. B、The principles of narrative. C、The connection between struggle and well-being. D、The link between mental health and self-narratives.
(2)、Why is the experiment mentioned in paragraph 3?
A、To give proof. B、To make predictions. C、To draw a conclusion. D、To make comparisons.
(3)、What does the underlined word "panacea" in the last paragraph refer to?
A、Attempt to get rid of worries. B、Means of recognizing yourself. C、Solution to adolescent problems. D、Guarantee to become better people.
(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A、Embrace Life Struggles B、Be Your Own Hero C、Ways to Make a Good Story D、The Power of Self-improvement
  • 2、 阅读理解

Imagine a plate holding two strawberries, identical in appearance. One came out of a supermarket box, meaning it was probably harvested when it was still unripe. By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the vine(藤)for two weeks. The other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.

Supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages: they are convenient and still available even in winter months. But the two berries differ from each other in the same way that hearing music in a concert hall differs from listening to it on an old CD player. The home-grown fruit is an eatable case for making a home garden.

Your columnist, who long considered gardening a complete waste of time, advances this argument with great enthusiasm. Planting cool-weather greens, as gardeners across the north-east of America are now doing, can seem nonsense, since convenient, continuously well-stocked supermarket shelves are available all week. But the same could be said of cooking: there are many cheap and decent restaurants around, so why bother to make your own meals?

That attitude misconstrues the ultimate appeal of gardening: it mistakes the product for the purpose. It is true that a garden can produce tomatoes and carrots of incomparable sweetness, and celtuce(芹莴) and herbs that taste like themselves rather than the plastic they are usually packaged in. While finding, let's say, celtuce in the shops can take some time, effort, and expense, growing your own vegetables ensures a reliable supply.

On the other hand, a garden, especially in the early years, can produce little but frustration. Green hands may plant the wrong crops for their soil. And even expert gardeners can lose a season's harvest to uncooperative weather.

No matter. The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it. The deepest pleasure-as with cooking. Writing or almost anything worthwhile - is in the work itself. To garden is to patiently, lovingly and diligently help life become strong and healthy, in the ground and above it.

(1)、What can we know about the supermarket strawberries?
A、They look distinct from home-grown ones. B、They give out pleasant and fresh smell. C、They are picked days before fully grown. D、They are planted typically in winter.
(2)、What does the underlined word "misconstrues" mean in paragraph 4?
    A、Misinterprets. B、Transforms. C、Mistrusts. D、Highlights.
(3)、Why does the author mention the failures in gardening?
A、To warn readers not to take up gardening easily. B、To advise readers to work in harmony with nature. C、To make readers reflect on the methods of gardening. D、To help readers have a whole picture of gardening.
(4)、What is the author's opinion on gardening?
A、It's a difficult and time-consuming process. B、Products of gardening make it worthwhile. C、The time and efforts invested make it a delight. D、It reduces the cost of purchasing vegetables.

A six-year-old longing to keep a unicorn(独角兽)in her backyard figured she'd get the hard part out of the way first.

Last November, Madeline wrote a letter to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control with a straightforward request. "Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one. Please send me a letter in response. "

Director Mayeda replied two weeks later. The department does in fact license unicorns, she said, under certain conditions. Those include polishing the unicorn's horn at least once a month with a soft cloth, feeding it watermelon at least once a week, covering it with only nontoxic(无毒的)and biodegradable sparkles and giving it regular access to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows. And, because unicorns are indeed very rare to find, the department is also giving Madeline a toy unicorn to keep her company during her search, as a token of appreciation.

"It is always rewarding to hear from young people who thoughtfully consider the requirements of providing a loving home for animals," Mayeda wrote in the letter. "I like your sense of responsible pet ownership to seek permission in advance to keep a unicorn in Los Angeles County. "

Mayeda told the Washington Post that this is the first time the department has received a request for a license for a unicorn --or any mythical(神话的)creature. They were impressed with the first-grader for wanting to ask permission in the first place, and doing her research to work out how to go about that. She and her colleagues deal with a lot of "life-and-death" issues on the job, whether that's seeing cases of animal abuse or animals hurting people or making decisions about having to put down dangerous or sick animals. So Madeline's letter has considerably brightened their spirits, and she is due to visit the department this week to discuss her unicorn license application. Safe to say, she's in for a magical surprise.

(1)、Why did Madeline write the letter?
A、To apply to visit a unicorn. B、To learn to provide animal care. C、To ask permission to keep a pet. D、To figure out how to find a unicorn.
(2)、What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A、Her application was disapproved. B、Requirements should be met for the license. C、She was presented with a live unicorn. D、Guidance was given for her search.
(3)、Which of the following best describes Mayeda?
    A、Imaginative. B、Sensitive. C、Flexible. D、Convincing.
(4)、Why does the department think the letter "has brightened their spirits"?
A、Because it is the first application letter for a pet. B、Because animal protection is a life-and-death issue. C、Because they are worn out with their daily work. D、Because they are touched with the girl's deeds.

When I speak to other parents about how responsible my kids are, I often get laughed at or they make a comment about how strict a parent I must be. Giving kids responsibilities is a must. It is parents' job to make their kids become responsible adults and to prepare them for the real world and life as an adult.

Kids as young as toddlers (学走路的孩子) can be given small jobs to do and can help you around the house, in the garden, at the grocery store, etc. They can do little jobs like setting the table, helping to make the bed, washing dishes, washing the car and so on. When you let children do small jobs at a young age and make it fun, encourage, praise and thank them, it quickly becomes normal and a part of life. Kids who are given different responsibilities grow up with a much greater sense of selfworth, selfesteem and are more confident. As the children grow, their responsibilities grow and expand.

Doing everything for children or not allowing them to make mistakes and learn from them is not being a positive, responsible parent. The kids will more than likely end up with bad attitudes, and usually have no respect for their parents or other adults and at times have no respect for themselves. When your kids are ready to leave home, they should be responsible, capable and confident.

It is my opinion that parents are to be thanked or to be blamed (责备) for just how kids take control of their lives. They are a product of their environment, mirroring what they have seen and what you have taught them. Parenting is the hardest job in the world and none of us are perfect, but it is our job!

(1)、What do other parents think when the author says her child is responsible?
A、They think it not rare. B、They think it acceptable. C、They think it not good. D、They think it lucky.
(2)、Parents can make their kids become responsible by ____.
A、making small jobs fun B、giving them simple jobs to do C、praising and encouraging them D、setting a good example to them
(3)、We can learn from Paragraph 3 that doing everything for children ____.
A、is bad for their development B、shows no respect for children C、is difficult for every parent D、shows parents' responsibility
(4)、What is the author's purpose of writing the text?
A、To explain the responsibilities of parents. B、To show her experience in raising children. C、To advise parents to make children responsible. D、To encourage kids to be responsible.

Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to take_control_of Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two "Irelands". Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country.

In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8. 2 million in 1841 to 6. 6 million in 1851.

For many years, most of the Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace. The Irish are famous for being warmhearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were "the greatest talkers since the Greeks".

Since independence, Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc.

(1)、What does the underlined phrase "take control of" in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A、Reach. B、Conquer. C、Challenge. D、Support.
(2)、What does the author tell us in Paragraph 1?
A、How the Irish fought against the English. B、How Ireland gained independence. C、How English rulers tried to conquer Ireland. D、How two "Ireland" came into being.
(3)、We learn from the text that in Ireland ____.
A、food shortages in the 1840s led to a decline in population B、people are moving to the cities for lack of work in the countryside C、it is harder to make a living as a farmer than as a factory worker D、different kinds of old Irish songs are all sung with instruments
(4)、The last paragraph is mainly about ____.
A、the Irish character B、Irish culture C、Irish musical instruments D、a famous Irish writer

It was a jam-packed day for 24-year-old Justin. While his hot dog stand at the local park in his hometown did well every day, that day was different. The stall was full of customers, and he was struggling to keep up.

"3 hot dogs, please!" someone ordered as Justin handed the recent orders, and he quickly got about his work.

"Coming right up!" he replied with a smile.

"Thank you! Have a nice day!" the customer replied upon receiving the orders, and Justin quickly got busy with the next one. Then he noticed an old woman pushing her way through the crowd to get to his counter (柜台).

"Excuse me, son. How much would a hot dog be?" she asked, looking at him.

"Depends on what you want, ma' am. They range from $3 to $7. You can check out the menu and let me know what you want," he replied.

"But that's expensive for me," she mumbled (咕哝), looking at the prices. "It's alright. I was just curious how much they cost. I don't want any," she added before walking away.

Justin noticed she went away and sat alone on a bench across from his stand. She kept looking in his direction, meanwhile touching her stomach occasionally. Justin couldn't help watching her because of strong curiosity. She was fully dressed with an information card worn around her neck. She might get lost because of something unexpected. Her face wasn't as rosy as others and her lips were dry. Justin wondered whether she would need any help. However, once they made eye contact, she always looked away quickly.

Eventually, Justin realized she wanted a hot dog but couldn't afford one, so he stopped what he was doing and walked over to her with food and drink. "I apologize, ma'am. I was in such a rush that I forgot to tell you you're our 50th customer of the day, so you get a free hot dog," he said upon approaching her. "Let me know how you like it!"

Where does food waste go? In most countries around the world, it goes into landfills (垃圾填埋场). But not in South Korea. The country banned food waste in landfills nearly 20 years ago and today, it is turned into animal feed, fertilizers and fuel.

Around the globe, 1.4 billion tons of food is thrown away every year. The waste goes into landfills where it can pollute the land and water as well as releasing methane—a greenhouse gas—into the air. In fact, food waste is the third-largest source of methane in the US.

The system that is in place in South Korea keeps almost 100 percent of unused food out of landfills. While other cities and local governments have put similar plans in place, it is not done anywhere else on a country-wide basis.

There are two reasons why South Korea passed laws to carry out mandatory (强制性的) recycling of food waste. First, the country's cooking tradition of numerous small dishes resulted in large amounts of uneaten food. This food waste went into landfills. But the country's mountainous geography didn't allow for enough landfills to be built. That's why the government forced recycling of paper and plastic in 1995 but food waste continued to be buried in landfills. But it was the neighbors of these landfills that demanded that another solution be found due to the very unpleasant smell from rotting food. The government banned organic waste from landfills in 2005. Another law that was passed in 2013 banned dumping liquid food waste in the ocean.

The system is not free but most of the cost is absorbed by the country. People can buy yellow recycling bags that are picked up on the roadside and some local governments have placed autonomous food waste collectors that require residents to pay a weight-based fee by using cards.

The food waste is collected from the bins every day except Sunday. Some of it is used to make animal feed or fertilizers and some is used to make fuel.

(1)、What phenomenon does the author describe in paragraph 2?
A、The US is worried about landfills. B、Landfills are the most common. C、Greenhouse gas is hard to avoid. D、Food waste can cause much harm.
(2)、What does the author want to say in paragraph 3?
A、Other governments don't plan to recycle food waste. B、100 percent of food waste goes into landfills worldwide. C、South Korea is successful in dealing with the unused food. D、South Korea should follow others' way of building the system.
(3)、What probably led to the ban in 2005?
A、Some people's appeal. B、Insufficient landfill sites. C、Unhealthy traditional diets. D、Large amounts of food waste.
(4)、How can people respond to the ban on waste from landfills?
A、By avoiding using cards. B、By purchasing recycling bags. C、By paying the cost of collectors. D、By picking up waste on the roadside.

Every morning in a city in Indonesia's far east, sleepy teenagers can be seen walk slowly and with heavy steps through the streets on their unwilling way to school.

It is not a scene from some sci-fi movie but a controversial experiment to get the day off to a much earlier start for the sleep-deprived (缺乏睡眠的) teens. The pilot project in Kupang has twelfth-graders at 10 high schools start classes at 5:30 am.

Authorities say the project is intended to heighten children's discipline. According to parents, though, their children are worn out by the time they get home. Schools in Indonesia generally start between 7:00 and 8:00 am. Teens in their school uniforms are now walking down dark streets or waiting for motorcycle taxis to get to school on time.

"It is extremely difficult and they now have to leave home while it's still completely dark. I can't accept this, for their safety is not guaranteed when it's dark and quiet." Rambu Ata, a mother to a 16-year-old, said, whose daughter Eureka now has to wake up at 4:00 am to get ready and ride a motorbike to school. "Now every time Eurek arrives home she is exhausted and falls asleep immediately."

At least one scholar seems to agree.

"It has no connection with the effort to improve the quality of education," Marsel Robot, an education expert from Nusa Cendana University. "In the long run, sleep deprivation could endanger the students' health and cause a shift in behaviour. They will only sleep for a few hours and this is a serious risk for their health. This also will cause them stress and they will release their stress by acting out."

A 2014 study published by the American Academy of paediatrics (儿科学) recommended that middle and high schoolers start classes at 8:30 am or later to allow enough time for sleep. The Kupang rule change was also challenged by local politicians, who demanded the government cancel what they called a baseless policy.

(1)、What is the purpose of the pilot project?
A、To punish students' mistakes. B、To let students learn more knowledge. C、To deprive students of sleep. D、To strengthen students' self-control.
(2)、What does Ata think of the project?
    A、Controversial. B、Unacceptable. C、Uncontrollable. D、Critical
    (3)、What is Robot's concern?
A、Students' safety. B、The stress of parents. C、Students' health. D、The quality of education.
(4)、What's the best title for the text?
A、An Unpopular Move for Teens to Start School at 5:30 am B、Some Problems Existing Among Indonesia's Teenagers C、An Unsuccessful Experiment Concerning Safety D、The Popularity of a Pilot Project in Kupang

Abdullah was born in Terengganu, a state on the eastern coast of the Malaysian Peninsular, known for its beautiful tropical islands. Growing up on the coast, he felt a close bond with the ocean. After being adopted as a child, he would escape from his strict home to the seaside to free himself.

The local adults would consider him a strange diving instructor, "who spent his days in the water and spoke to corals (珊瑚) as if they were people". For a long time, he worked unknown to the public and at times in poverty. But it was this closeness to the sea that led him to study the marine (海洋的) environment, and later, earn a scholarship in Oceanography at the Florida Institute of Technology. With the travels across the globe that this research involved, Abdullah learned about the extensive degradation (退化) in the marine ecosystem. He was enthusiastic about the need to take action to restore the damaged and dying coral reefs.

Abdullah set up Ocean Quest Global in Malaysia in 2010, an environmental organization focusing on coral reef protection. It was buoyed by volunteers working throughout Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. Its founder has spent most of his life on the coral reefs of Malaysia, observing their behavior and life cycles, and conducting his own research.

In less than a decade, Abdullah's organization had expanded to several countries like Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines. It has over 800 trainers across the world, working on 180 islands, roost of them in Thailand. Most recently, the organization has been actively working on the restoration of Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh Island, Thailand. It is also building the first subtropical coral nursery in Egypt, reports the diving industry portal, ADEX Ocean Vision.
