Learning how to care for a sad person will help you be there for your loved ones and friends when they are down. However, knowing how to care for a sad person is not something an individual is born with. Here are a few tips that will eventually help you lift the spirit of a sad person.
Give a hug. Hugging someone shows your affection and care. This can make them feel relaxed and open to you. This can also help them recognize that you are there to help them go through this moment. With no kind and loving words, your actions have already said a lot.
Now, go on and say some kind words. Words like "I'm here", "we are in this together", "you'll get over this", "lean on me" and so on, can help a sad person feel better and know that you're there to take him/her through the sad moment.
Use the right tone of voice. They go along with tone to convey a meaning to the listener. To convey your words with faith that would create a positive effect on the sad person, you would need to say it with the right tone of voice.
Listen patiently. People ask lots of questions but they end up paying little attention to getting the feedback (反馈) that they wanted. Don't be that person. After asking the questions listen patiently to know what the sad person would appreciate at that time.
A. Say kind loving words.
B. Make use of polite expressions.
C. Then choose to appreciate others too.
D. Remember that words do not stand alone.
E. It will help you know how to offer the best fitting help.
F. This knowledge is gained through research and practice.
G. When you do this to someone, they can feel your warmth.

Children now worry more about their parents spending too much time on their mobiles or computers than parents worry about their children. Those who order their children to switch off televisions, computers or mobile phones because they fear they are becoming addicted (上瘾的) might need to take a long hard look at their own screen habits, new research shows.
Almost 70% of children think their parents spent too much time on their mobile phone or other similar devices, a research found. More than a third of children worry that their parents struggle to switch off from technology and a quarter of children surveyed openly doubt their double standards when it comes to too much use of mobile devices, televisions and computers. One in five British children say their parents do not listen to them properly when they are together because they are so busy checking their emails or picking up work messages.
The survey was carried out by Opinion Matters, a research agency for the New Forest National Park Authority. The authority has recently begun providing facilities for visitors to hand in mobile phones, tablets and other devices for fear that technology is ruining family life and making it impossible for people to appreciate nature properly.
Dr Richard Graham, a psychologist and expert in technology addiction at Capio Nightingale Hospital, said there is growing evidence that children are finding their parents' preoccupation (全神贯注) with communication technology increasingly worrying.
Four in ten of the children surveyed admitted that they sometimes communicate with their parents by text, email or social media even they are in the next room. The survey found that six in ten parents worry their children are spending too much time glued to small screens at home but almost seven in ten children have the same fear for their parents.
Dr Aric Sigman told the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health conference that parents who cannot switch off risk driving them to a lifelong dependency on screens with striking similarities to alcoholism (酗酒).
(1)、How many children questioned worry their parents spend too much time on screens?A、One in three. B、One in four. C、One in five. D、Almost seven in ten.(2)、According to the Paragraph 3, we learn that ____.A、screen habits are ruining family life B、parents have trouble receiving work messages C、children do not listen to their parents properly D、parents are openly accused of double standards(3)、According to Graham, what's children's attitude to their parents' screen habits?A、Approving B、Doubtful. C、Upset. D、Indifferent(4)、What is the main purpose of this passage?A、To introduce the disadvantages of mobiles and computers to adults. B、To advise parents to spend more time on their children C、To describe the difficulties today's parents have met with D、To compare today's parent-child relationship with that in the past -

Young adults in Singapore can often live with their parents into their 30s. They are encouraged by the government, which is fond of praising family values. Housing policy makes it difficult for young people to live independently. Almost 80% of Singaporeans live in subsidised (补助的) public housing. They cannot have a flat of their own until they marry or turn 35.
Yet a small but growing number of Singaporeans are resisting the nanny state (保姆式国家). Between 1990 and 2020, the number of those under 35 who lived alone or with non-family members grew from 33,400 to 51,300. Since they do not qualify (有…资格) for public housing, they must rent in the private sector. One factor (因素) is that Singaporeans are getting married later. In 1980, the average ages at which men and women married were 27 and 24; today, they are 30 and 29. A growing number choose not to marry at all. For others, it was COVID-19 that pushed them out of the nest. Serene Chee, a 25-year-old lawyer, did not greatly mind living with her parents until travel restrictions and work-from-home policies kept her stuck at home all the time. In June, Ms. Chee and a friend moved into an apartment together.
Living on your own is not easy. First, you must inform your parents. It took Lydia Yang, an illustrator who was then 28, three months to gather the courage. Then you must learn to pay bills and do basic chores. When Lenne Chai, a photographer, moved out seven years ago at the age of 23, she did not know how to cook.
Life on your own can be lonely. Ms. Yang found it "a bit depressing", particularly during the lockdown. But living apart may improve relationships. Both Ms. Yang and Ms. Chai said that they got on better with their parents after moving out. When living together, they paid each other little attention. Now their weekly visits are "quality time", said Ms. Chai. When Ms. Chee's parents came to her flat for dinner recently, they were impressed by how tidy it was.
(1)、What's the attitude of the government to family values?A、Negative. B、Supportive. C、Objective. D、Subjective.(2)、What makes it hard for young people to live by themselves?A、Housing policy. B、The spread of COVID-19. C、Parents' disagreement. D、The limited private apartments.(3)、What can we know from Paragraph 2?A、A growing number of people have enough money to hire nannies. B、People need to rent houses because they have qualification for public housing. C、More and more people don't want to get married because of economic pressure. D、COVID-19 is one of the reasons why many people don't want to live with their parents.(4)、What is the last paragraph mainly about?A、The definition of "quality time". B、The positive effect of living alone. C、The loneliness of living independently. D、The parents' attitude to children's independence. -

Many of us have heard of Alex Honnold, who made history in 2018 when he became the first man to climb EI Capitan without ropes or safety equipment. But his mother, Dierdre Wolownick, just became the oldest woman to conquer the famous peak: she reached the top on September 23-the morning of her 70th birthday.
Dierdre, the writer and language teacher, decided to take up climbing as a means to connect more with her son. In 2008, accompanied by her son Alex, she visited a climbing gym and completed 12 routes that first day with his help, but it was months before she worked up the courage to return and practice on her own.
Dierdre became committed to the sport, and began to meet friends and sharpen her skills. She scaled (登上) parts of Half Dome and Cathedral peak at a time when many people at her age are thinking about retirement and slowing down. The writer would go on to publish a book about her climbing experiences with Alex called The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story.
"As a mother, I am impressed by this role exchange process. Parents and children often wind up changing roles in life as they get older," she writes in her book. "But never, I thought,
is that transformation as obvious as when they climb together. "
On September 23, Dierdre and her friends set out in the dark, at 6 am. The route is steep (陡峭的) enough to require all-fours, grabbing rocks and trees and whatever else will hold the weight. Yet despite all difficulties the team made it to the top. "It was really inspiring to watch her and then to have her on top with all of us," said one of Dierdre's friends. "There was a special look on everyone's face. We knew where we were. We knew how amazing the moment truly was.

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath a willow tree. It must be as sick, for the branches were kind of yellow and dry. I was a deserted girl. Endless quarrels with my parents had left me nowhere to go but this desolate( 荒无人烟的) corner of the park. As I sat on the bench, things that happened recently began to flash through. Days seemed months to me recently. No cozy home to stay. No happy memories about my life. No considerate family members to talk to. Even the book I was reading was no fun. Not content with life, I had a good reason to frown, for the world was intended to drag me down.
And if that were not enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right in front of me with his head tilted( 倾斜) down and said with great excitement,"Look what I found!" In his hand was a flower. What a pitiful sight, its petals( 花瓣) were all worn- not enough rain, or too little light. He must have picked the flower from somewhere shady and sunless, just like where I was staying these days.I couldn't help being self-pitying. Wanting him to take his dead flower away and go off to play, I faked a smile and then looked away."Why couldn't everyone just leave me be!"I thought to myself, upset and gloomy.
But instead of leaving, he sat next to me and placed the flower to his nose and declared loudly with certainty,"It sure smells pretty and it must be beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here, it is for you." The"weed"before me was dying or dead, not vibrant with colors, orange, yellow or red-anyone having eyes can see that clearly! But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need."Strangely, instead of placing the flower in my hand, he held it in mid-air without any reason or plan.

The Zhongyong,"Doctrine of the Mean,(be) a Confucian classic and part of the Four Books. It is actuallychapter of the ritual(礼仪) classic Liji, and(take) out from this book in the Song period. There are several opinions about the authorship of the Zhongyong. It is( traditional) attributed(认为是) to Zisi,a grandson of Confucius. The text seems, modern authors say, at least partially to have been compiled(编纂) during the Former Han period.
The concept of"the mean"is a core idea of Confucianism. The so-called"mean"by Confucius doesn't mean"compromise(折中)"a "just-right" way when understanding and handling objective things. This will result harmony in action, and eventually in a harmonious society. Pure harmony without wandering from the central tone, and(stand) in the centre without leaning towards one side will keep all social positions stable.
( wise), kindheartedness and courage are the three virtues of the mean way that will keep stable all social relations. Almost everything depends on the adequate behavior of each member of society. Another important aspect(treat) in the Zhongyong is sincerity. It is the root of human behavior, and without sincerity there is no man.

This fishing village is full of trompe l'oeil- an art form in which nothing is what it appears to be. While some flowers die, others live for years. Why? Because they're3 on the building!
Trompe l'oeil has been around for centuries.4 ,Camogli's fishermen painted their houses in bright colors and unusual designs,so that they could see their homes5 from the water. Then, in the 1700s,it became a way to make small, simple buildings look6 and high-valued.
And today? There are still many trompe l'oeil houses in villages like Camogli, but only a few artists are7 to paint them. Carlo is one of this ever-decreasing band of artists who's managed to make a business out of it.

There are things we all do, or don't do, that lead us to waste far more time than we realize in the moment. The biggest time regret, I think, is dwelling on(沉湎于) mistakes and shortcomings.
In a study, researchers asked subjects to spend money during an imaginary trip to the mall. Before "shopping", some subjects were asked to recall a past financial mistake. They found those subjects were more likely to incur(招致) debt. Dwelling made them feel like a failure and told them there was no need to try, because they already sucked. So, they got further into debt when already feeling like an overspender. Of course, we don't want to skip over our mistakes or ignore them either.
I also missed too much for fear of my own shortcomings.I wanted to travel after high school, but I went to university close to home instead, because I was too shy to meet new people and was afraid I couldn't make it in another city. After university, I wanted to be a writer, but I decided to find a more stable, accessible job instead, because that's easier.I decided to find work I actually enjoyed, travel more and live somewhere else. I made a ton of mistakes along the way, but the bigger mistake was not trying sooner.
So, never beat yourself up over your mistakes and shortcomings. The sooner you learn from them, the sooner you can free up your time and energy to live the life you want.
A. Eventually, I got tired of this.
B. Regret is another big waste of time.
C. I was doing it for the wrong reason that I was afraid to fail.
D. For years, I stayed in a comfortable place, doing things I disliked.
E. The goal is to learn something from them, and then release the failure.
F. When you finally relate it to your own past experiences, it probably becomes easier.
G. Dwelling on mistakes wastes time and, worse still, makes us more likely to repeat mistakes.

Gardeners who use pesticides are contributing to the decline of British songbirds, a study suggests. Scientists have urged people to stop"spraying their gardens with poisons"in order to halt bird decline and adopt instead wildlife- friendly practices. The results of the University of Sussex study, which researchers call the first of its kind, were published in the journal Science of the Total Environment.
The experiment, which surveyed 615 gardens in Britain, found 25% fewer house sparrows when glyphosate(草甘 膦) was used regularly. This is an ingredient found in commonly used herbicide(除草剂) brands such as Roundup or Gallup. Slug pellets(鼻涕虫杀虫剂) also seemed to have an impact on bird sightings; in gardens where Slug pellets were used, house sparrow numbers were down by almost 40% .
Prof. Dave Goulson, of the school of life sciences at the University of Sussex, said,"The UK has 22 million gardens, which collectively could be a fantastic refuge for wildlife, but not if they are overly tidy and sprayed with poisons. We just don't need pesticides in our gardens. Many towns around the world are now pesticide free. We should simply ban the use of these poisons in urban areas, following the example of France."The Royal Horticultural Society, the UK's leading gardening charity, said the use of pesticides and herbicides should be avoided if possible and they should only be used, if ever, in small and targeted applications.
The research also found that those who adopted wildlife-friendly practices such as planting native shrubs and flowers, or digging a wildlife pond, saw more birds than those who did not. Cannelle Tassin de Montaigu, a PhD researcher within the school of life sciences and an author of the study, said, "It's encouraging to find that simple measures, such as planting native shrubs and trees and creating a pond, together with avoiding the use of pesticides, really make a measurable difference to the number of birds you will see in your garden.
(1)、What does the underlined word"halt" in paragraph 1 most probably mean?A、Stop. B、Attract. C、Note. D、Witness.(2)、Why are the statistics mentioned in paragraph 2?A、To reveal the severe influence of pesticides on birds. B、To compare the effects of two kinds of pesticides. C、To convince readers of the importance of house sparrows. D、To help gardeners choose the proper pesticides.(3)、What can be inferred from Prof. Dave Goulson's words?A、The ideal places for wildlife in the UK are extremely tidy gardens. B、The gardens in the UK are so tidy that pesticides are not needed. C、Pesticides should be prohibited from use throughout the UK. D、Some countries like France have made urban areas pesticide free.(4)、What is the last paragraph mainly about?A、Alternative methods to keep gardens tidy. B、Assistant ways to increase the number of birds. C、Gardeners' attitudes towards the experiment. D、Other researchers' interest in the experiment. -

Whom should you marry? Where should you live? How should you spend your time? For centuries, people have relied on their gut instincts( 直觉) to figure out the answers to these life-changing questions. Now, though, there is a better way. We are living through a data explosion, as vast amounts of information about all aspects of human behavior have become more and more accessible. We can use this big data to help determine the best course to chart.
There has long been overwhelming- and often surprising- evidence that algorithms(算法) can be much better than people at making difficult decisions. Researchers have collected data on various kinds of choices people make, the information they base those choices on,and how things turn out. They have found, for example, that a simple data-driven algorithm would have been better than judges at deciding whether a defendant should stay in jail( 监狱)or be released; better than doctors at deciding whether a patient should get a procedure; and better than school principals at deciding which teachers should be promoted.
The power of data analysis has been proved in the sports and business worlds, too. As made famous by the book and movie Moneyball ,baseball teams found that algorithms were better than scouts(物色优秀运动员的人) at picking players, and better than managers at picking strategies. In finance, the hedge fund( 避险基金) Renaissance Technologies dramatically defeated competitors by seeking out patterns in stock market data and using them to inform its investment strategy. Tech firms in Silicon Valley have found that data from experiments provides better insights into how to design their websites than designers could.
These are the early days of the data revolution in decision-making. I am not claiming that we can completely outsource(外包) our lifestyle choices to algorithms, though we might get to that point in the future. I am claiming instead that we can all dramatically improve our decision-making by consulting evidence mined from thousands or millions of people who faced dilemmas similar to ours. And we can do that now.
(1)、What makes people better at finding answers to life-changing questions?A、People's better gut instincts. B、Changed human behavior. C、The modern information era. D、Various courses accessible.(2)、According to paragraph 2, algorithms might NOT defeat people in____.A、court rulings . B、job promotions C、operative estimations D、teaching practices(3)、What can we learn from paragraph 3?A、The plot of the movie Moneyball is related to successful data analysis. B、Scouts and managers are not needed in successful baseball teams. C、The hedge fund Renaissance Technologies had some financial problems. D、Tech firms in Silicon Valley mainly relied on data to design websites.(4)、Which of the following will the author most probably agree with?A、The modern information era is mature enough to take advantage of . B、People should outsource all the lifestyle choices to algorithms. C、With big data people can learn from countless similar examples. D、Face-to-face consultation will be the major trend in the future. -

Frederick Phiri is the junk-art king of Zambia: at just 22,he started to earn an international reputation for being able to make complex and elegant sculptures from scrap(废弃的) metal found in his community.
Phiri's father died when he was starting primary school. Then his mother abandoned him and he had to stay with his grandfather. His grandfather paid for his schooling through primary school but when he entered secondary school, he had to get various jobs to pay for his fees. His work was so popular that it caught the eye of Karen Beattie, director of Project Luangwa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to education and economic development in central Africa.
"I introduced him to a local welder(焊工),"Beattie told Newsweek .
In 2017,Phiri worked with welder Moses Mbewe during the rainy season, helping to make a complex set of doors for Project Luangwa. The piece sparked an idea in Beattie's mind:"I handed him a bunch of scrap metal and said,‘ Make something with this.'And he did. It was wonderful."
Today, Phiri continues his art, using pieces of junk people bring him-keys, broken bike chains, old metal plugs and whatever scrap metal is lying around. He then turns the junk into abstract animals- elephants, cranes, giraffes, chameleons- and sells them at Project Luangwa headquarters. The community has recognized his talents.
