My favourite player was LeBron James. Paul's favourite player was Tyrone Bogues, a guy who played for the Charlotte Hornets, although we actually agree that they are both champions. Bogues was only 1.6 metres tall, which made him the shortest player ever in the NBA. Guess what? Paul was only 1.6 metres tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he had to practise more. During all those hours of doing jump shots on his own, he used Bogues as his inspiration. Paul once said, "If Bogues could make it, why not me?"

Our coach was not so sure. Paul had to try out many times just for making the team. He was still usually on the bench, being just a replacement, which was really tough on him. Everyone knew Paul had real skills, and was someone who worked really hard and had a strong desire to play for the team. However, Paul didn't get a chance.

    Which words best describe Paul?

    A、Smart and brave. B、Inexperienced and shy. C、Skilled and hard-working. D、Strong-willed and independent.

Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.

However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook. The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September 1666. In four days, it destroyed (破坏) more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. Over one hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.

The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King's baker (面包师) in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.

By eight o'clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul's and the Guildhall among them.

Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. "People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat. "

The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.

After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect, wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets were still narrow, but he did build more than fifty churches, and one of them was new St Paul's.

The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it, London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.

    (1)、Where did the fire begin?

(2)、What was the writer of the passage most sorry for?
A、Many people lost their lives. B、Many famous buildings were destroyed. C、The birds in the sky were killed by the fire. D、The King's favourite bakery was burned down.
(3)、Why did the writer mention Samuel Pepys' words?
A、Because Pepys help put out the fire. B、Because Pepys also wrote about the fire. C、To give readers a clearer picture of the fire. D、To show that poor people suffered most from the fire.
(4)、How was the fire put out according to the text?
A、The king and his soldiers came to help. B、All the wooden houses in the city were destroyed. C、People managed to get enough water from the river. D、Houses standing in the direction of the fire were pulled down.

Omolayo Adebayo always had a dream about a mobile shower that would be a relief for the homeless community. Four years later, she made that dream a reality — The Neighborhood Well was founded in 2017.

In early October, the mobile shower program was started. The repurposed trailer (拖车) provides a warm shower, toilets and spare clothing to homeless people twice a month. "We seek to rebuild the confidence of our unhoused neighbors by providing unhoused neighbors with warm showers and hope," Adebayo said.

The Neighborhood Well isn't the only group in Prince George's County working with homeless people. The Day Center is another one of a wider network of charity organizations.

The Day Center has been providing services to the homeless community since 2016. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the organization tries to offer the "missing necessities" that homeless people need, including showers, computers, charging stations, and place to say.

Beyond day-to-day necessities, The Day Center also provides a social space for unhoused people. "We wanted a convenient place where people could get a meal and a place to meet others," the organizer said. "The Day Center has been a really great place for people who can sometimes feel really left out to gather and build some community," said Lapp Luther, one homeless man. "That's really an amazing thing. "

The Neighborhood Well and The Day Center are just examples of a larger community of charity organizations. Dozens of these groups are closely-connected in a system of cooperation. Both organizations aim to help their communities, but some say there is still a long way to go in fighting against homelessness. "What we want to do is just to provide an opportunity for our neighbors to get clean in a comfortable space," Adebayo said.

(1)、What does The Neighborhood Well aim to do?
A、To offer the homeless mobile phones. B、To make taking showers convenient and fun. C、To bring back the homeless people's lost belief. D、To clean up and make the community beautiful.
(2)、What can we learn from Lapp Luther's words?
A、He is fairly awkward in making friends. B、The necessities are of great value to him. C、He enjoys hanging out with his neighbors. D、The Day Center offers a sense of belonging.
(3)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A、We should do more to help the homeless. B、The organizations fail to meet their goals. C、The neighborhood has been much cleaner. D、The organizations work fairly independently.

If a person forgets names, places or facts — and has trouble with everyday things like reading or shopping — it may not mean you are getting old. It could be Alzheimer's (阿尔茨海默病) disease. So it's important to see a doctor as soon as you can.

There is no cure for Alzheimer's. But a medicine called ARICEPT (安理申) has been used by millions of people to help their symptoms (症状).

In studies, ARICEPT has been proved to work for Alzheimer's. It has helped people improve their memory over time. It has also helped them to keep doing everyday things on their own.

Ask your doctor if ARICEPT is right for you or your loved one. It is the Number One medicine for Alzheimer's in the world. The sooner you know it's Alzheimer's, the better ARICEPT can help.

ARICEPT is good for many but may not be good for everyone. Some people may experience not sleeping well, feeling very tired, or not wanting to eat. In studies, these side effects weren't serious at all and went away over time. Some people taking ARICEPT may feel light-headed. • 9、 第三部分 写作,第三节阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a Saturday afternoon. I was having lunch when Dad told me to get ready. I became unhappy. I don't like Saturdays! Even though it's a holiday for most children, it is not for me because I need to go to football club.

Many kids love sports, but I am not one of them. I prefer to stay at home and read. I don't like running, so in a team I am a bad player. The coach is tired of me and my teammates sometimes think I'm useless.

I have no idea how to play football. Usually, after practice my teammates would ask me to stay out of the game and I would just nod.

Last Thursday, the coach told us that we would be competing with another team in a month and many people would come to see the game. Our opponents (对手) were the winner last year and I froze and thought how awkward it would be if the team lost because of me.

So I decided to practice hard for the match and I went to practice every single day.

After one month, when the game day came, my teammates were unwilling to take me in the team, and I also wished to stay away from the ground as well. But they happened to be short of one player and had no choice but to take me in the team.

Our team was the Big Blues. There was a great cheer on our arrival in the field. I got very nervous. The game started and within two minutes, I got a blue card. By the time I was allowed back, the score was two goals for each team and the next goal would decide the winning team.

    注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

    Paragraph l:

When the ball came towards me, I froze.
