Christmas can easily become an expensive time of a year. From gifts to decorating, the money spent on the celebration adds up quickly. But there's no reason to completely break the bank.

Make a budget(预算). Set the amount you're willing to spend for the holiday, including gift giving, decorating and travel.   And if you can keep to your budget, you'll lead an easy life in the following weeks and months.

Start shopping for Christmas decorations early. Stores have sales for decorations between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Better yet, go shopping for next year's decorations the day after Christmas. You can buy many things at very low prices right after Christmas.

Shop for gifts all year round. Whenever you are out shopping, keep an eye out for great Christmas presents. Shopping early can prevent you from spending more money than you can afford. And if you spend little here and there throughout the year, Christmas will have a much smaller influence on your wallet in December.

Scale down(减) your gift giving. Sometimes you just can't afford to get something for everyone. Remove the people from your list whom you rarely speak with. The people you do choose to buy for don't need something expensive. Keep in mind that it's the thought that is more important.

    A. Once you have a budget set, keep to it.

    B. This budget is perfect for many people.

    C. Christmas is known as the season of giving, sharing and receiving.

    D. And it's after Thanksgiving that the prices begin to go up.

    E. Send them simple cards instead.

    F. There are ways to celebrate well and spend wisely at the same time.

    G. It doesn't matter when you get the gift, whether it's January or June.

There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.

However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems.

Whether you should immediately put food in the fridge or let it sit out to cool depends on its temperature. Dangerous bacterial(细菌的)growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F potentially harmful bacteria grows most rapidly at these temperatures.

Placing lots of hot food in the fridge can raise the temperature of the fridge into this danger zone. Fridge temperatures should always be set below 40 degrees F. This may help the food get out of the danger zone as soon as possible.

However, there's no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to. If you are a forgetful person, or if you won' t be around to store the food after it has cooled enough, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Your fridge can handle the heat and get the food cooled quickly.

Food should never stay out at room temperature for more than two hours. Leftovers can become breeding dangerous bacteria if they're left out too long and can make people sick.

"It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two-hour mark," says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleus' Grand Diploma training program. " In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better. "

(1)、Which temperature most contributes to the growth of harmful bacteria?
    A、Below 40 degrees F B、Between39~ 40degreesF C、Between41~ 135degreesF D、Above 135 degrees F
(2)、What is the author's attitude towards putting hot food directly into the fridge?
    A、unclear. B、neutral. C、worried. D、unconcerned.
(3)、What does Serena Poon suggest doing about the leftovers?
A、Dividing them into small parts. B、Storing them in the fridge right away. C、Waiting until they cool down completely outside. D、Leaving them sitting at room temperature for two hours.
(4)、What is the best title for the text?
A、When to pack up Leftovers B、A Good Idea to store Food in the Fridge C、To Cool Food outside or in the Fridge D、How to prevent Bacterial Growth

Soccer, basketball, baseball, and the like are popular all around the world. However, do you look for something a bit different? There maybe some new sports that you want to try out!

One of the new sports is regball. It is a Russian sport, adding basketball, wrestling(摔跤)and rugby. As in basketball, the players have a ball that they try to shoot through a hoop(篮筐). But nobody will be calling " that's a travel" while watching this sport, because there is no need to dribble(运球). Players also wrestle with each other during the game.

Another kind of sport you don't see everyday is soapbox racing. Handmade vehicles are pushed down a hill, and competitors have to drive their vehicles through a course with different kinds of things in their way. Not all competitors are engineers, so the vehicles are easy to break apart. Competitors are judged for their soapbox's creativity. Therefore, speed is not everything, and creativity plays the most important role. Competitors often design their vehicles based on themes from pop culture or history. Of course, the competitors dress up to play the role, too.

Cheese rolling race is not seen very often, but it is exciting. This is a game that is extremely funny for audience, but painful for competitors. During the game, competitors race down a very steep(陡峭的)hill, chasing after around of Double Gloucester cheese that can weigh up to nine pounds and can travel some 70 miles per hour. Whoever gets to the bottom first wins the cheese.

(1)、What can we know about regball?
A、It mixes three kinds of sports. B、Its competitors race down a hill. C、wrestling is not allowed during the game. D、Its rules are exactly the same as basketball.
    (2)、What does the underlined word"course"in paragraph3 mean?
A、A lesson. B、A track. C、An action. D、A period of time.

    A、Their speed. B、Their clothes. C、Their creativity. D、Their driving experiences.
(4)、What is the text mainly about?
A、A new study about sports. B、A presentation of sports skills. C、An introduction to three new sports. D、The difference between traditional and new sports.

It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year's use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters' wear. I didn't really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.

I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat everyday. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn't afford a coat but could get my old one.

My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don't really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead. Ralph waldo Emerson once said," Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover. " Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.

(1)、Which word can best describe the author' s daughter?
    A、Wealthy. B、Thoughtful. C、Easy-going. D、Humorous.
(2)、Why was the author in shame when seeing his old coat in the closet?
A、It cost too much. B、It was looking dirty. C、There was not enough room for his new coat. D、It was not sent to someone in need.
(3)、What is the author 's decision after his second coat becomes old?
A、Telling his daughter. B、Buying a new one soon. C、Donating it to charity. D、sending something else to charity.
(4)、What does the author want to show in the last paragraph?
A、Giving fills our wants. B、Love is the key to joy. C、The more you give, the more you lose. D、A coat is large enough to cover our want

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.

One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, "I'm afraid to take part in it." Her mother said, "It's okay; just do it bravely." Emily followed her mama's advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小)to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily (颤抖地)forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What's worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词)after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.

Some naughty boys ran after her and said, "Emily, coward (胆小鬼)!Emily, coward!" Emily didn't argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.

"Well, my poor girl, don't cry. Tell me what happened to you," asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.

Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, "It doesn't matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don't be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you."

Social media tools let us see what our friends are up to and maintain friendships. The digital age also enables us (find) people who share our interests, such as  (collect)model cars or playing an unusual instrument. Whatever our  (hobby) are, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.

But we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media (be)often not the whole truth about a person. On social media sites, people tend to post only positive updates make them appear happy and friendly and the smiling photos can hide real problems. this doesn't mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Although in recent years technology (change)the way we acquire friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same.
