Of all the unusual behaviors I was told to expect from my teenagers, their staying in their rooms for a long period of time was the worst for me.

Like many other parents, I, too, often thought that there must either be something wrong with me, or something deep y wrong with my teenagers when they suddenly wanted to avoid everyone in the house and the outside world.

What I didn't know was that looking for solitude(独处) and privacy was perfectly normal for teenagers, and while you may think their wish for solitude is worrying, what is really happening is actually mentally(精神上) necessary.

A recent study in the Journal of Adolescence looked at a lot of possible causes of a teenager's strong wish and need for solitude. What they found can make parents less worried about the troubling but actually helpful behavior. Researchers believe wanting and needing to be alone is just a matter of personal choice for teenagers. And that if that choice is out of their will, there is nothing to worry about.

"Solitude has always been seen as something detrimental to mental health, especially for teenagers who are thought to be unsociable or lonely," said Margaria Azmitia, professor of psychology at UC Santa Cruz and co-author of the study. She continues "However, sometimes solitude can help teenagers deal with mental problems. Developmentally, leaning to be alone is a skill, and it can make them refreshed and energetic."

So when should parents get worried? Researchers found if a teenager is forced to stay in his bedroom as a punishment or something, then this kind of solitude will cause problems. But when a teenager has chosen on his own to checkout his life, so to speak, it serves as a much-needed break from the noise of life. In those cases, self-chosen solitude can provide a chance for self-examination or creative expression. So communication matters between teenagers and parents.

Who likes salty potato chips the most? The answer is British people! The trouble is that they are eating too many salty foods. Some of Britain's largest restaurants are even serving dishes with unacceptably high levels of salt to children, according to a survey.

Researchers from Action on Salt analyzed at total of 302 meals on children's menu from 50 largest restaurants in Britain. They found that 41 percent contained more than 1.8 grams of salt the largest recommended amount for a child's meal set by Public Health England (PHE) in 2017. What's worse, 34 percent of the meals had more than 2g of salt. They also found that levels of salt for the same meal could be largely diverse, depending on which restaurant made them. The spaghetti made by the Italian restaurant Prezzo contained 3.2g of salt, compared with 0.3g in the one made by Beefeater.

In September 2020, PHE set out new suggestions for the largest number of salt in children's meals. It wants the level reduced to 1.71g by 2024. According to this, nearly half of the meals surveyed were over this level, including most meals at Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Pizza Hut, while Brewers Fayre, Burber King and Ikea made all their children's dishes with less than 1.71g of salt.

Gramham Mac Gregor, Chairman of Action on Salt, said, "Gradually reducing the salt that is added to our food is the most effective measure for lowering blood pressure, so that we can reduce thousands of stroke(中风) and heart disease that are caused by overeating salt."

"As for those restaurants who are unwilling to follow the instructions, ministers must now force them to stop adding all of this salt and putting our children's future health at risk," said Graham. "Parents should also pay attention to it," he added. "Try to serve our children with more homemade meals and fewer restaurant foods. Try to add spices(香料) to food instead of salt. Try them. Our kids will thank us."

When I was 13, almost everyone just thought I was a kid so I did not have to worry about anything. But that was not true because I was bored with everything I was learning. Besides, my mother didn't understand me.

When I was 14, things changed. My friend encouraged me to learn music and I just found out that I had a strong interest in music so I started spending much time on it. Soon I wanted to be a part of it. So I research edit and then I wanted to be a part of an academy that trains musicians. But the problem was that it was in a different country. Although my parents might not be on my side, I never gave up my dream.

During the next year, I practised my skills in dancing, singing and flexibility. I was in senior high school and had to be a boarder(寄宿生). My mother made me focus on my study. But I was busy preparing for auditions(试镜) of that academy and I was doing everything I could to prove it. To get what I wanted, I had that academy's photos all over my room and that city's main monument on my phone's wallpaper.

After a year in 2022, I finally gave my best audition of that academy on the Internet and I got in! I was happy but sometimes I wondered whether my parents were going to agree to it or not. Fortunately, my parents agreed and I flew to that country to give the last phase of an interview to join that academy. I passed and later was sent there for training.

It was not surprising that I finally got the chance to live in the city of my dream and train in the academy of my dream, as I believed everything was going to work out as long as I held on to my dream.

Houtouwan—A village like no other
