Humans spend about one third of their lives sleeping. But some mammals (哺乳动物), like the northern elephant seal, survive with much less sleep.

Researchers in a new study described the unusual sleep pattern of these ocean animals. They found that when these mammals go to feed on trips that can last seven months, they sleep just two hours each day. Those two hours of sleep are made up of short moments of rest lasting only 10 minutes each as they dive deep to avoid predators (捕食者). The only other mammals known to get so little sleep are African elephants.

The researchers placed a head covered with sensors on the heads of the seals that they studied. The sensors recorded sleep signals created by the seals' brains and heart rate. The sensors also recorded the animals' location and depth beneath the sea.

The researchers studied female seals because they go out on long open-ocean trips while males feed in coastal waters.

During dives lasting about 30 minutes, the seals went into a deep sleep called slow-wave sleep while keeping a controlled downward movement. When they then experienced rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, the seals fell into a turning pattern. Then, at the deepest point of their sleeping dive—up to 377 meters deep—they wake up and swim back to the surface.

Terrie Williams is a scientist at the University of California at Santa Cruz who helped write the study. She said, "It is remarkable that a wild animal will fall into deep, paralytic REM sleep when there are predators on the hunt." She added that the seals solve this problem by going into deep sleep in the deep parts of the oceans where predators usually do not hunt them.

Williams said the brain's ability to control awakening the sleeping seals at a depth before they drown is also a discovery about how mammalian brains work. She commented on this saying that it shows the survival control of the seals' brains.

Along the streets of Malabon in the Philippines, Marilene Capentes pushes a cart every morning except Sundays. The city of Malabon is just north of the capital, Manila.

Capentes is a waste picker. She collects bags of separated garbage, placing food waste in one container. This material will be turned into compost (堆肥) at the local recycling center. The rest of the waste goes into separate containers. The recyclable materials are later sold.

Capentes said the heavy rubbish used to be all mixed together. Then a few years ago, a local environmental nonprofit (非盈利机构) started asking people to separate their rubbish.

The Mother Earth Foundation in the Philippines is a member of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, called GAIA. The organization wants to avert food waste from going to landfills. Food waste gives off biogas (沼气) as it breaks down. Biogas is a powerful greenhouse gas.

At a material recycling center in Malabon, organic (有机的) waste collected from households is turned into compost. This material then goes into a community garden to grow vegetables. Some of the food waste is broken down into biogas. This biogas is then used to cook vegetables for waste workers to eat.

There are challenges in establishing these systems in new places. It costs money to set up a facility for composting. People, including local officials, have to be educated on the importance of separating waste. Containers have to be provided to families that cannot buy more than one.

And sometimes separating organic waste is not thought to be important. Also, unlike recyclables and metals, there is not a large market for organic materials. Therefore, waste workers must be paid for the system to work. But these problems can be solved. More people are making the connection between reducing biogas and fighting climate change.

"Do what you love, not what others tell you is right," says Georgia Lines of New Zealand.

I spoke with the 24-year-old singer-songwriter earlier this month about her rise to fame. In 2022, Lines was named breakthrough artist of the year at the annual Aotearoa music awards ceremony. Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand, an island country in the Pacific Ocean that is home to more than 5.1 million people.

Lines makes success look easy, but she has worked hard to perfect her skills. "I love what I do," she told me. "I love it when I get lost in the music, and everything works together."

Already Lines has opened for pop singer George Ezra. She hopes "to open for Harry Styles one day," she added.

Lines has written more than 20 songs and worked together with several top artists including Jack Burton, Alex James, and Cassie Henderson. "I love working with other people and cooperating," Lines said. "I find I work better when I'm with others so we can bounce ideas off each other."

When asked about her musical ambitions growing up, Lines smiled. "I was never a musical genius as a child," she said. "But I always loved singing and music."

In recent years, Lines has drawn enthusiastic crowds for her concerts. The video for her hit song, "No One Knows", won best music video of the year in New Zealand in 2021.

As for her future goals, Lines said that she wanted "to have a sustainable (可持续的) career and to keep doing what I love." That means, focusing on her own career and artistic achievements. "Comparison is the robber of success," she said. "If I had stopped to compare myself with others, I wouldn't have made it as far as I have."

Pause and be skeptical about new information. Whenever you come across an article or a post sharing information that you haven't seen before, take a second to consider it. . It's better to look into information to make sure it's legal before spreading it around.

Watch out for information that sets off a strong emotional response. Misinformation is often designed to make you feel angry, sad, scared, or just upset. A new study suggests that turning away from compassion (同情) in the name of safety may not protect us as we hope. Shutting off our compassionate response may threaten our mental health, the research team found. "This research shows the harmful effect of controlling our natural ability to connect with others", says Leah Weiss, a founding member of Stanford University's compassion cultivation training program.

To explore how attitudes toward compassion were affecting people's well-being, University of Coimbra psychologist Marcela Matos and her team employed over 4000 people from 21 countries. All of the participants completed an online survey in spring 2022 that asked them to describe what they think of compassion, how their psychological state is and how strong their social connections are.

When the team analyzed the survey responses, they found that participants who expressed a fear of showing compassion for themselves or others were likely to feel more depressed, anxious, and stressed out. People with a fear of compassion also reported feeling less connected to others.

Marcela's findings are consistent with earlier research showing the damaging effects of isolation and withdrawal on mental health. "Social isolation is associated with not just loneliness, anxiety, and depression, but also an increased risk of high blood pressure and cognitive decline," says Australian psychologist Hugh Mackay, author of The Kindness Revolution.

On the other side, people who choose compassion during stressful situations seem to have a more durable sense of well-being. Training programs that promote people's compassionate response appear to reduce their fear of compassion, based on results from another of Marcela's studies.

Once people realize that compassion can benefit them in tough times as much as it benefits others, they'd be motivated to pull out of an isolation situation. "We have natural desire for social connection, community, kindness and compassion, because those are the pathways to social harmony and cooperation," Mackay says. "If you can find the resources to address the needs of other people, your own anxieties tend to melt away." Thus, it's better to show sympathy.

As is a very common phenomenon, students are listening to music while studying or doing homework. In libraries, many choose to isolate themselves from the outside wearing headphones, and the same is true of some offices. Whether or not there is isolation, however, what these people have in common is that they see music as a tool that can improve concentration and productivity in general.

But is it true? Does music really help us focus better on what we're doing, whether it's memorizing text, studying complex topics, or writing projects?

Scientific studies have been carried out on this subject for many decades among other things, because if music can be used to improve the performance of students or workers, this information can be very useful for organizations able to finance this type of study.

For example, the results of a study were published in 1972 and it was designed to try to better understand the relationship between listening to melodies and changes in productivity. Through a series of observations, there was an increase in the performance of workers when listening to music from loudspeakers.

However, this study was the daughter of its time, and was only used to study a very specific and representative working context of the time: that of factories. Workforce tasks were repetitive, predictable and boring, and the music acted as a stimulant of mental activity. As the work was more rewarding and enjoyable, the productivity results were also better.

Other research that took place later served to reinforce (加强) the idea that music improves the performance of routine tasks. This was good news, but what about the most complex and creative jobs — those which cannot be carried out by machines? What about studying complex academic programs, which cannot be memorized literally but need to be understood and mentally worked on?

The world's oldest pen pals have both become 100 years old after many years of transatlantic letters and have now switched to Zoom. Centenarians (百岁老人) Geoff Banks from Honiton, Devon, and Celesta Byrne from the US, started writing to each other aged just 16 in 1938. They met as part of an educational project to put British and American students in contact — and decades later they are still corresponding.

Former engineer Geoff even kept in touch with Celesta during WWII when he served as a mechanic on British aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious in the Pacific. It has been so long that Geoff, a retired engineer, barely remembers how they started talking. Geoff said, "I honestly struggle to remember how we got in touch, and I think it was something to do with an American school's scheme. It matched us up with Americans for a pen pal relationship, and somehow I ended up with a letter from an American girl, and we have just kept corresponding ever since. There were a couple of years when we struggled to keep in touch because of the war. Now I correspond mainly by email. Email is much easier for me these days because I can't write very well anymore. We just talk about daily lives and our families really, but we don't discuss the football."

They now touch base via video app Zoom. Geoff said, "I have this new thing called Zoom to chat with her, but I leave all the technology to younger people. They're much better at pressing all the buttons."

Despite having chatted for decades, the pair only met twice — first in 2002 while Geoff visited New York aged 80, and then again two years later. Having such a unique relationship, the pair deny there is any romance there. Celesta said, "We're just friends, like people who live next door. It's nice to hear his voice."

My dad doesn't write me letters. And he doesn't always remember my birthday or wedding anniversary -- or even how old I am sometimes.
