Minimizing the environmental damage that new roads cause is generally regarded as a good thing. But to do that, it helps to understand just how new roads cause the damage of which they are accused.

Recently, a group of researchers led by Dr. Gonzalez conducted an experiment and proved that immigration is good for the health of animal populations. A road destroys only a small part of the habitat, thus destroying just a few local populations of creatures. So the argument that road-building itself is bad for biodiversity is not self-evidently correct. Those who nevertheless hold this view say that apparently separate local populations of animals are, in fact, parts of much larger populations connected via migration.

         According to this theory, when a local population struggles to move about – because of an epidemic, for example – individuals from neighboring communities can fill the gaps.

The implications of the theory are straightforward. Cut local populations off from each other and each is more likely to disappear. And roads are good at doing just that. Testing the theory with experimental roads, however, would be expensive. Dr. Gonzalez's brainwave was to do the whole thing on a much smaller scale.

          The team studied moss-covered rocks. On some rocks the researchers left the moss untouched; on others they made "roadways" across to leave the moss isolated. After waiting six months, they found that in the disturbed habitats nearly all the bug population had declined compared with undisturbed moss, and 40% of the species had become extinct.

The real test came in the second part of the experiment. In this, the researchers removed moss much as before, but they left narrow moss paths to bridge the no-bug's-land between islands. The islands with bridges did far better than isolated islands – a result that supports the notion that population exchange is necessary to keep an ecosystem healthy.

          Whether these results can be translated to large-scale ecosystems remains uncertain. But if they can, they would cause more, not less, concern about the ecological effects of road-building. On the other hand, they also suggest a way out. In Britain, tunnels are often built under roads for animals of regular habits, such as badgers(獾), to be able to travel their traditional routes without having to fight with traffic. Extending that principle, perhaps special bridges might be a cheap way of letting man and nature rub along a bit better.

Sam Altman, CEO of the San Francisco startup OpenAI that developed ChatGPT, his company's chatbot tool, on Tuesday urged US lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence "We think that regulatory intervention (干预) by governments will be critical to mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful models. My worst fears are that we, the field, the technology industry cause significant harm to the world. " Altman said.

The 38-year-old Stanford University dropout said the potential for AI to be used to influence voters is among "my areas of greatest concern", especially because "we're going to face an election next year and these models are getting better". He said his company's technology may destroy some jobs but also create new ones and that it will be important for government to figure out how we want to reduce that". Altman said the government could regulate the industry by creating an agency that issues licenses for the creation of large-scale AI models, safety regulations and tests that AI models must pass before being released to the public.

The rapid development of ChatGPT with an estimated 100 million users within two months has sparked an industry race, with Microsoft, an investor in OpenAI, enabling ChatGPT in the Windows operating system and Google adding its own so-called generative AI systems including one called Bard, to its app. The latest forms of AI also have drawn criticism from some of tech's biggest names for their potential to disrupt(扰乱)millions of jobs and spread misinformation.

Altman said OpenAI pretests and constantly updates its tools to ensure safety and that making them widely available to the public actually helps the company identify and mitigate risks.

Our species' incredible capacity to quickly acquire words from 300 by age 2 to over 1, 000 by age 4 isn't fully understood. Some cognitive scientists and linguists have theorized that people are born with built-in expectations and logical constraints (约束) that make this possible. Now, however, machine-learning research is showing that preprogrammed assumptions aren't necessary to swiftly pick up word meanings from minimal data. 

A team of scientists has successfully trained a basic artificial intelligence model to match images to words using just 61 hours of naturalistic footage (镜头) and sound-previously collected from a child named Sam in 2013 and 2014. Although it's a small slice of a child's life, it was apparently enough to prompt the AI to figure out what certain words mean.

The findings suggest that language acquisition could be simpler than previously thought. Maybe children "don't need a custom-built, high-class language-specific mechanism" to efficiently grasp word meanings, says Jessica Sullivan, an associate professor of psychology at Skidmore College. "This is a really beautiful study, " she says, because it offers evidence that simple information from a child's worldview is rich enough to kick-start pattern recognition and word comprehension. 

The new study also demonstrates that it's possible for machines to learn similarly to the way that humans do. Large language models are trained on enormous amounts of data that can include billions and sometimes trillions of word combinations. Humans get by on orders of magnitude less information, says the paper's lead author Wai Keen Vong. With the right type of data, that gap between machine and human learning could narrow dramatically. 

Yet additional study is necessary in certain aspects of the new research. For one, the scientists acknowledge that their findings don't prove how children acquire words. Moreover, the study only focused on recognizing the words for physical objects. 

Still, it's a step toward a deeper understanding of our own mind, which can ultimately help us improve human education, says Eva Portelance, a computational linguistics researcher. She notes that AI research can also bring clarity to long-unanswered questions about ourselves. "We can use these models in a good way, to benefit science and society, " Portelance adds.

African students who participated in a Chinese agricultural development program have returned to their home countries, aiming to use  they've learned to help local farmers increase grain yields.

 Bred to be sweeter, today's cherries, bananas and apples taste different than they used to but not necessarily better. Among fruit farmers, the word "quality" is now routinely used as a standard for "high in sugar", though firmness, color and size are also considerations. In a recent study about ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using "molecular (分子的) approaches", a group of plant scientists wrote that, in general, the sugar content of many fruits are now higher than before owing to continuous selection and breeding. Modern apple varieties, the scientists stressed, were on average sweeter than older ones.

 The sweetness of fruit depends not just on how it is bred but also on growing conditions, yield and harvest. The lead researcher, Sugiura, said, "If you could taste an apple harvested 30 years ago, you would feel the difference." He believed that modern apples are picked so early that even if they are bred for sweetness, they often don't develop their full character. The fragrance never develops in fruit that is harvested too early.

 Jim Cooper, an apple farmer in England, is regretful to admit the fact that many people will never taste the "strawberry hint" in a really ripe Pearmain, a type of heritage apple. In a way, the rise of consistently sweeter fruit in our lifetimes has been a victory of plant breeding. After all, it's a rare person who would seek out bitter grapes if they could have sweet ones instead.

 But the sweetness of modern fruit is not without its problems, especially for people with diabetes (糖尿病), who have to reduce their intake of higher-sugar fruits. Fruit that is bred sweeter also tends to be lower in the chemicals that make it healthy. Considering health, maybe the real problem with modern fruit is that it has become yet another sweet thing in a world with sugar. Even grapefruits, which used to be quite bitter, are sometimes now as sweet as oranges. If you've never tasted a sour cherry, how can you fully appreciate a sweet one?

The biggest criticism(批评) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline friends to online friends. In fact there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally unfounded. Research by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that people are not replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline relationships.

 However, there is one part of social networking that is deeply worrying. We find ourselves in a hyper-connected world where people access social media day and night, excited to make announcements about the tiniest details of their lives. Research is starting to show that this culture is negatively affecting not our friendships but our character.

 Professor Larry Rosen, in his book iDisorder, says that young people who overuse social networking sites can become vain, aggressive. But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing- empathy. This is the emotion that bonds us together; it allows us to see the world from our friends' points of view. Without it, we are far less able to connect and form meaningful adult relationships.

 Sherry Turkle, a professor of Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT, suggests that people are no longer comfortable being alone. This is something confirmed by a study where 200 university students were asked to go without social media for 24 hours. Many admitted an addiction to their online social network; most complained that they felt cut off from their family and friends. But being alone is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendships with others. She believes, as is the title of her book, that we are simply "Alone Together".

 These potential changes in our characters are rather disturbing. If nothing is done, our young people could well be in trouble. Therefore, suggestions about ways to encourage our young people to avoid the problems of social networking should be made, so they can develop the kinds of friendships that are required to grow into well-adjusted and happy adults.

Scientists at Purdue University created the world's whitest paint — a discovery that not only adds yet another choice to the "which white should we paint this wall" dilemma, but also might help the climate crisis.

The paint was developed by Purdue mechanical engineering professor Xiulin Ruan and his team. It works through a passive cooling technology that offers great promises to reduce space cooling cost and global warming. "When we started this project seven years ago, we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind," Ruan said in a podcast (播客) episode of This Is Purdue. They wanted to create a paint that would reflect sunlight away from a building, dramatically decreasing the need for air conditioning.

Heating, cooling, and lighting account for 28 percent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. And overusing air conditioning can overwhelm a city's power grid and cause blackouts (停电). In a Queens blackout in 2006, 175,000 people were left without power, which lead to 40 deaths. This paint could effectively be an alternative to air conditioners in some places.

The paint reflects 98.1%of solar radiation while also giving out infrared (红外线的) heat. Because the paint takes in less heat from the sun than it gives out, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without using power. Covering a roof area of 1,000 square feet with the paint could create 10 kilowatts ofcooling power, the researchers found."That's more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses,"Ruan told This Is Purdue.

You can't buy the paint just yet, but researchers are partnering with a company to put the paint on the market. While individual action to fight elimate change can help save our planet, it's important to note that the vast majority of the world's greenhouse gas emissions can be traced back to 100companies. Maybe we can douse(浇) those companies with this white paint, too — it could be worth a shot.

One evening, a man was injured in an accident and rushed to a hospital. Already in shock, he was found with multiple injuries, 1 a critical head injury. Immediate2 was needed to stop the life-threatening situation.
