"Rick, I'm sorry to say that your mom's health is failing," Doctor Carter said over the phone.

When he arrived there 15 minutes later, he saw two men exiting the store. He quickly went up to them. "Hey, man," he said. "Could you spare me some of your gas? I'm on my way to see my mother. She's sick, but my car ran out of gas."

The two men exchanged a quick glance and said, "Sorry. We're in a hurry and we can't help your mom."

Rick was at a loss. He entered the convenience store and asked several people for help, but it didn't take them long to turn him down. He was anxious at this point, terrified that he would never see his mo m again. He walked out of the store, feeling helpless.

Once upon a time, there was a young woman  worked for a businessman living high up on the hill. It was part of her daily work to walk down the hill with her two pots (罐子) to collect water from a river. With time, one of the pots got a small crack (裂缝). But she decided to keep  (use) the pot.

If your tendency is to imagine the very worst case whenever you have trouble, train yourself to change that tendency. Ask yourself what good can come from the situation or what you can learn from it. Optimism surely fuels success and delight.  Try to find humor and laughter in life's everyday struggles.

Understand and forgive

Step into others' shoes and understand a situation from another's perspective, and we're more likely to handle the situation with objectivity and effectiveness. There will be less conflicts and more delight.

Hate and anger are forms of self-punishment. When you forgive, you're actually practicing kindness to a yourself. Most importantly, learn to forgive yourself. Everyone makes mistakes .  .

Keep learning and be a problem solver

Learning keeps us young and alive. When engaging our brains and putting them toward productive uses, we're much more likely to feel delighted and fulfilled.

"What kind of rubbish are you?" This question might normally cause anger, but in Shanghai it has become a special "greeting" among people over the past week. On July 1st, the city introduced strict trash-sorting regulations (条例) that are required to follow and expected to be used as a model for our country. Residents must divide their waste into four separate categories and toss (投放) it into specific public dustbins . They must do so at specified times, when monitor s are present to ensure correct trash-tossing and to ask the nature of one's rubbish. Individuals who fail to follow the regulations face the possibility of fines and worse. They could be punished with fines of up to 200 yuan ($29) . For those who repeat to go against them, the government can add black marks to their credit records, making it harder for them to get bank loans or even buy train tickets.

Shanghai government is responding to an obvious environmental problem. It generates 9 million tons of garbage a year, more than London's annual output, which is rising quickly. But like other cities in China, it lacks a recycling system. Instead, it has relied on trash pickers to sift (筛选) through the waste, picking out whatever can be reused. This has limits. As people get wealthier, fewer of them want to do such dirty work. The waste, meanwhile, just keeps piling up.

Many residents appear to support the idea of recycling in general but are annoyed by the details. Rubbish must be divided according to whether it is food, recyclable, dry or harmful, the distinctions among which can be confusing, though there are apps to help work it out. Some have complained about the rules concerning food waste. They must put it straight in the required public bins, forcing them to tear open plastic bags and toss it by hand. What they complain most is the short periods for dropping trash, typically a couple of hours, morning and evening. Along with the monitors at the bins, this means that people go at around the same time and can keep an eye on what is being thrown out; no one wants to look bad.

Who is a genius? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.

Let's state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?

In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It's said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club — women, or people of a different color or belief — they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.

A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender (性别) are "really, really smart." Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief. Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are "really, really smart." Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn't take a genius to know the answer absolutely not.

Here's the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we're all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors (因素) like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with "intelligence, creativity, perseverance (毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world. "
