1、 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Achievements require proper goal setting if they are to be accomplished. However, goals don't set themselves, nor do they accomplish themselves. It requires effort from you. So get started, identify what matters to you, set goals, keep going, and achieve your eagerness.
If you don't regard the outcome as being sufficiently worthwhile then you won't have the motivation to see your goal through to a conclusion.
How we think matters, too. You can't achieve much with negative thinking. A positive mind with a genuine sense of direction will take you as far as you really want to go. There are no limits for anyone with enough self-belief and a real sense of what they really want from life. Believe you can and you will.
Dream high dreams. Don't be afraid to have a magnificent prospect for yourself that is truly inspiring. Don't be afraid to have dreams big enough to be just a little bit frightening. Your goals should be big enough to stretch you and inspire the desire within you.Anything easy will not give you a sense of achievement.
Revisit your inner child. Children have no limits to their dreams. The problem is, as we get older we fear losing face if we are seen repeating trial and error. So goal setting starts with pretending you're a kid again and believing that anything's possible.
A. Believe you can't and you won't.
B. Be realistic of course but don't make goals too easy.
C. Accomplishing the outcome must really matter to you.
D. Most children believe they can achieve anything they want in life.
E. What you accomplish will undoubtedly bring a lot to you in the future.
F. You can never turn your dreams into achievements without goal setting.
G. A big goal should be broken down into a series of smaller goals and activities.

Childhood days on the beach or messing around in rivers can have significant lasting benefits for our wellbeing (幸福) in adulthood, according to a study. It found that exposure to blue spaces-such as coasts, rivers and lakes-as a child made revisiting blue spaces in adulthood more likely, as these adults showed greater familiarity with and placed greater value on natural settings.
More than 15,000 participants in 18 different countries were surveyed for the study, published in the Journal of Envirommental Psychology. "Water settings can be dangerous for children, and parents are right to be watchful," said Dr Leanne Martin, co-author of the study. "The research, though, suggests that encouraging children to feel comfortable in these settings and developing skills such as swimming at an early age can have previously unrecognized life-long benefits."
There has been a growing body of research over the last ten years about the specific beneficial effects of blue spaces on mental health. A review published in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health suggested visits to blue spaces could increase people's physical activity levels and lower stress, while improving their mood and psychological wellbeing. Another review published by the Environment Agency, found that blue spaces were linked to the improvement of mood and feelings of restoration to a greater degree than green spaces.
The study's lead author Valeria Vitale said, "We recognise that both green and blue spaces have a positive impact on people's mental and physical health. Also, previous studies examining childhood nature exposure and adulthood outcomes have largely focused on green spaces, or natural spaces in general. However, as we highlighted in our paper, blue spaces have unique sensory qualities (感官特质)(light reflection, wave motion, sounds, etc)and encourage a distinct range of leisure activities (swimming, fishing, water sports)."
Another co-author Dr Mathew White added: "If our findings are supported by long-term research that tracks people's exposure over the entire life course, it would suggest that further work, strategies and plans encouraging more blue space experiences during childhood may be a viable way to support the mental health of future generations."
(1)、What is a finding of the new study?A、Adults place a high value on natural environments. B、Children show great familiarity with water settings. C、Time spent in blue spaces benefits children in later life. D、Blue spaces and green spaces have equal effects on mental health.(2)、What can we infer from Dr Leanne Martin's words?A、Water settings are more dangerous for children than for adults. B、Children should start water activities early. C、Swimming is a necessary skill for children. D、Parents protection makes children feel more comfortable.(3)、How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?A、By giving examples. B、By analysing causes. C、By making comparisons. D、By following time order.(4)、What does the underlined word "viable" in the last paragraph probably mean?A、Fun and relaxing. B、Quick and unique. C、Sound and workable. D、Easy and cheap. -

Depending on the right combination of currents and wind, a large mass of Sargassum "seaweed"circling the Gulf of Mexico may soon wash up along the US coast near Florida. The bloom (藻华),which is likely to be the largest ever recorded,is visible from space.
Sargassum is a type of leafy, rootless algae that form large floating mats on the ocean floor. It can be found in the Sargasso Sea and was first mentioned by Christopher Columbus in 1492 when he was afraid his ship would become trapped in it.
Sargassum is an important habitat for marine species because it provides food, shelter, and breeding grounds. It absorbs carbon dioxide, an important greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, just like other floating marine vegetation, according to Phys.org. However, when tons of it gathers along coastlines, it sends out a terrible strong smell which can cause headaches, eye discomfort, and upset stomachs. Too much algae on beaches can harm marine ecosystems and make it difficult for people to keep on with their recreational and fishing activities, costing communities millions of dollars.
Scientists have been tracking the formation of large Sargassum blooms. However, this year's bloom could be the largest ever, covering more than 8,800 kilometers from the coasts of Africa to the Gulf of Mexico and weighing 10 million tons.
It is critical to improve Sargassum management. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) not only advocates best practices in Sargassum cleanup and removal, but also cooperates with governments and communities to develop policies, standards, and measures to protect public and environmental health. FAO is also promoting ways to repurpose Sargassum, turning it into products to provide additional employment and income. In fact, small businesses are already using Sargassum to make bricks, shoes, soaps and paper. Larger businesses are considering turning Sargassum into renewable energy, bioplastics, and compost.
(1)、Why does the author mention space in paragraph 1?A、To stress the Sargassum bloom is massive. B、To explain how currents and wind combine. C、To show what the Gulf of Mexico looks like from space. D、To demonstrate how the Sargassum movement was tracked.(2)、What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A、Sargassum's significance in the marine economy. B、The process of Sargassum's moving to the coast. C、Sargassum's contribution to reducing global warming. D、The double-edged effects of Sargassum's existence.(3)、How do small businesses fight against Sargassum blooms?A、They participate in cleanup activities. B、They help rebuild marine ecosystems. C、They create products from Sargassum. D、They transform Sargassum into resources.(4)、What would be the best title for the text?A、Smelly Seaweed Bloom Heads to Florida B、FAO Now Works on Reducing Marine Litter C、Groundbreaking Project Turns Sargassum into Plastics D、Sargassum is Changing the Beach Vacation in Mexico -

My family was first introduced to Shirley Hughes when we visited a 50-year-old private library in Bangkok, where there are many of Hughes's books. Hughes's children's books immediately stand out from the rest. Every single page presents a work of impressive artistic quality. In an age when many children's books rely on cheap computer graphics(绘图),it's refreshing to discover an illustrator who obviously labored, with deep attention to detail, over every page.
It's not just the illustrative talent and distinctive style, using pen and ink and watercolor to "fill ordinary domestic scenes with a mixture of magic", that sets Hughes's works apart. She was also an expert storyteller. That's not because her stories are particularly imaginative. Rather, perhaps, it's the simplicity and normality of the stories that make them so pleasing to kids and parents alike.
Take Dogger, one of Hughes's earlier books, published in 1977, which sold millions of copies and won Britain's Kate Greenaway Medal. Dogger is the story of Dave, a young boy who loses his beloved stuffed dog named Dogger. Much of what makes Dogger and the rest of Hughes's books so engaging is that the stories are told from the perspective of the child encountering everyday events. Hughes has a special skill for drawing wonder out of what we often assume to be boring and uninteresting.
Though I have a graduate degree in education, I never would have expected my children to love these stories. My best guess is that it is because Hughes's books talk to them about the kinds of things they witness and experience daily. By extension, these books tell them in reassuring tones that, yes, their little world with all of its people and curiosities is quite interesting indeed.
Perhaps much of the reason I've so taken to reading Shirley Hughes to my own children is that it reminds me of what the world looked like when I too was a little boy.
(1)、What is a special characteristic of Hughes's children's books?A、They make good use of computer graphics. B、They focus on presenting the writer's skills. C、They are attractively illustrated. D、They are full of magic events.(2)、What do we know about Dogger?A、It is Hughes's first book. B、It has a plain and usual story. C、It is told from Dogger's perspective. D、It attracts readers for its fancy style.(3)、Why does the author like Hughes's books so much?A、They provide stories the author relates to deeply. B、They are mostly based on Hughes's experiences. C、They are a loving record of the author's childhood. D、They strengthen the bond between the author and his children.(4)、What is the main purpose of the text?A、To make an advertisement for a book. B、To present how children's books should be written. C、To analyze what kind of stories pleases readers. D、To explain why a writer's books are popular. -

Vincent Van Gogh
Born in the Netherlands in 1853, van Gogh led a simple life in a small town until the age of 16. He then left school and joined a company of art business in the larger city. During the next seven years, van Gogh bought and sold paintings in the Netherlands, London, and Paris. He eventually realized that dealing with others' artwork was not his dream. He soon discovered that his dream was to become an artist himself.
He spent much of his time in learning the basic skills of drawing. He believed that to become a great painter, one must first master the ability to draw. It was only after he was comfortable in this area that he began to use oil paints. That is when van Gogh developed a style for color that made him one of the most respected artists of all time.
Van Gogh's paintings are amazing representations (代表) of his view of the world. He used his brush and oils to make layers that built the painting until it was almost three-dimensional (三维). This quality makes people want to reach out and touch the painting.
Perhaps one of the most memorable examples of van Gogh's use of color and brush style is his painting The Starry Night. The sky swirls across the canvas (画布), while the stars glow with unearthly brightness. Each brushstroke (笔画) creates the movement and lights. Under the sky rests a village painted with smaller strokes and finer detail, giving the impression of peace. A large tree in the foreground suggests that the view is enjoyed from the top of a hill, which offers a glimpse of the majesty (庄严) of the night sky. The Starry Night displays the gift of van Gogh's ability to create a powerful image with simple brush and oils.
Van Gogh spent only the last ten years of his life painting. Yet van Gogh today is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. His influence is strong; many painters mimic his style and use of color. His artwork can be found in museums all over the world.

Owning a pet is a fun and rewarding experience. But every animal and their needs are different, so how can you make sure that you choose the right one for yourself? Here are some top tips from national pet charity Blue Cross.
Do your research
You may like the look of a particular pet but that doesn't mean they're right for you. . So, think carefully about what you want from your pet and do some research before you take one on. Some pets may also require more vet care than others. Take French bulldogs and pugs for example, they can suffer many health issues over their lifetime, including problems with their breathing and skin conditions due to their exaggerated features.
For example, if you work full time and you want a dog, who would take care of them during the day? If you want a cat, will they have access to outside space while you're out during the day? Familiarize yourself with the size and exercise requirements of different pets to make sure they're the right choice for you.
Do your sums
From everyday things like insurance, food and toys to unexpected vet bills, having a pet is certainly a financial commitment.. Make sure you factor in how much your new pet will cost before you choose them.
Use a reliable breeder (饲养员)
If you do want to buy a dog or cat, ask a vet or breed club to recommend a responsible breeder. Ask the breeder for all the relative paperwork and see the pet's parents or relatives to observe their temper, general health and welfare. Because these may well tum out to be puppy farmers or commercial dealers who have little interest in the welfare of the pets they sell.
A. Charities can offer support and advice about individual pets
B. Think about your lifestyle
C. Don't throw yourself into the financial trouble
D. Adjust your taste
E. Don't purchase online or from dealers who offer multiple types of pets
F. We'd advise owners to really do their research before taking on one of these pets
G. Every pet has its own personality and some often have strong characters

Traveling by train can be a romantic way to see the world. Since it was one of the original forms of transportation worldwide, here are some fantastic train trips to add to your travel list.
Qinghai-Tibet Railway
Where it goes: Xining to Lhasa
Why not start with the world's highest train ride? The Qinghai-Tiber Railway climbs to great heights of over 16,0000 feet as it snakes trough the Himalayas. The wonderful 1215-mile journey only makes seven stops.
Eurostar
Where it goes: London to/from Paris
Eurostar is a popular way for folks to get from London to Paris, thanks to its quick travel time, but it has another attraction that makes it a great train trip. For 20 minutes, you will actually be riding 150 feet underwater through the famous English Channel.

Where it goes: Moscow to Vladivostok
The Trans-Siberian Railway is another historically famous railroad that should be on your travel list. It is also the world's longest continuous railway. Along the way, you will pass through eight time zones and have plenty of time to see the beautiful Russian countryside.
Glacier Express
Where it goes: St. Moritz to Zermatt in the Swiss Alps
This train ride is a favorite among many, as it's arguably the best way to experience the Swiss Alps. It's much more about the journey than the destination, and it gives new meaning to the term slow travel, taking over seven hours to pass just 180 miles. But it's one of the most scenic train journeys out there, so the slow pace is welcomed.

Some people say global English is no longer just controlled by British or American English, but is running free and developing uniquely local forms. Can you figure out the following terms?
"I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face." This is a way of saying "Keep off the grass" Or "people mountain, people sea", which means "very crowded".
These examples are what we call Chinglish. When it comes to Chinglish, if all you know is "good good study, day day up", you will be considered "out man".
Nowadays, more Chinglish words have been created, for example, a Chinese idiom is translated as "smilence", a combination by the English word smile and silence.
Chinglish usually offers a humorous look at misuses of the English language in Chinese street signs, products, and advertising. They are favoured by some English speaking tourists and visitors. Dominic Swire has been living in Beijing for a couple of years. "I think many Chinese people complain about the Chinglish and badly translated English. But you know, sometimes for us foreigners, it's actually quite charming to see them. I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from Chinese culture."
However, Chinglish will probably become a "cultural relic" in the near future. Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years. "It is very ridiculous to see Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barrier for communication between Chinese and people from other countries," a Beijinger said.
Some Chinese university experts side with Chinglish. They argue that English has absorbed elements from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and now it's Chinese's turn.
(1)、Which one of the following can be called Chinglish according to the examples?A、English words which get new Chinese meanings. B、The Chinese words which are difficult to translate. C、The words combining English vocabulary and Chinese grammar. D、The local words preventing foreigners from learning Chinese well.(2)、What does "smilence" most probably mean?A、Laughing at somebody. B、Knowing little about speech. C、Smiling without being noticed. D、Saying nothing but to smile.(3)、What is Swire's attitude to Chinglish?A、It helps him to learn Chinese well. B、It seems part of Chinese culture. C、It can show the humour of Chinese. D、It will attract more foreign tourists.(4)、Why is Chinglish likely to become a "cultural relic" in Beijing?A、Because Beijing is determined to get rid of Chinglish signs. B、Because Chinglish is a chance to enrich Chinese and English. C、Because it has become a unique bridge between Chinese and English. D、Because it improves the understanding between Chinese and foreigners. -

Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday.
While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children's lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading.
According to the report's key findings, "the proportion (比例) who say they ‘hardly ever' read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13-year-olds and 9 percent of 17-year-olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today."
The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2—8, remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session.
When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel(建议) parents looking for data about the effect of e-readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time.
The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading. Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.
As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom(逼近) ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.
(1)、What is the Common Sense Media report probably about?A、Children's reading habits. B、Quality of children's books. C、Children's after-class activities. D、Parent-child relationships.(2)、Where can you find the data that best supports "children are reading a lot less for fun"?A、In paragraph 2. B、In paragraph 3. C、In paragraph 4. D、In paragraph 5.(3)、Why do many parents limit electronic reading?A、E-books are of poor quality. B、It could be a waste of time. C、It may harm children's health. D、E-readers are expensive.(4)、How should parents encourage their children to read more?A、Act as role models for them. B、Ask them to write book reports. C、Set up reading groups for them. D、Talk with their reading class teachers. -
