My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.

She ran a small shop at a flea market, and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ignored her. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, "your mom only has one eye?" and taunted me.

I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So l said to my mom, "Why don't you have the other eye?! If you're only gonna make me a laughing stock!" My mom did not respond, I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have had said what I wanted to say. Maybe it was because I was full of anger then and there, I didn't think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.

I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it's a place that doesn't remind me of my mom past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! And still with her one eye! It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom's eye.

The Baili Azalea (杜鹃）Nature Reserve in Bijie city, Southwest China's Guizhou Province,(name) after its 125.8 square kilometers of old-growth azaleas and is  national 5A-level scenic spot. The scenic spot not only boasts a sea of azaleas, but (be) also home to towering old trees, mountains, rivers, and rare animals and plants. The azaleas are in full bloom from late March  early May.

How Laughing at Yourself Makes You Attractive

Have you ever embarrassed yourself in public and got laughed at for it?  And it's okay — we should even have a laugh about them.

●Laughing at yourself means accepting who you really are. You may feel bad about yourself because of past misfortune. However, it's normal to be imperfect. What's important is that you should be honest with yourself about who you are.  You won't be able to laugh at yourself without self-acceptance.

If you think of a game of fetch, you might picture a dog running back and forth, eagerly recovering a ball. But a new study shows that they're not the only pets that like the game: Cats play fetch, too, just on their own unique terms.

The researchers discovered almost 1,000 owners of 1,154 cats to find out if and why. According to their findings, nearly 95% of the cat owners reported that their cats fetched items naturally. One respondent said his cat returned the toy completely for no reason.

Fetching was mainly first noticed when cats were under I year old. What's more, "cats who fetch largely determine when they engage in fetching activities and actively influence the play behavior of their owners," according to the study. "So, it can say a bit about cats being in control of their interactions and being in control of their environments, even being in control of us. You might even go so far to say," says Jemma Forman, the co-author of the study.

But the motivation for cats to fetch objects seems to be different from that for dogs. Cats are more likely to play on their own with objects similar to prey (猎物). For dogs, play is more social, involving either another dog or human.

In general, play has major advantages for both the pet and the owner, as it not only helps to prevent attack towards, the owner, but also models the act of preying on real animals, an important kind of play behavior. "So even if your cat doesn't play fetch, obviously it's a really good idea to try and engage them in any sort of play. Play does have a lot of benefits," says Forman. "It's about owner acceptance to your fur baby," she says.

The first set of Chinese stories presented in English scripts, titled Stories of China: Performed in English, was officially published by Foreign Language Press. Planned by the New Channel International Education Group with the participation of playwrights from China, the United Kingdom and the United states, the book provides a new way for young people to learn English while inheriting and spreading Chinese culture.

The book contains 20 English scripts in novel formats covering a wide range of subjects. Unlike the most common English scripts for young readers on the market which are based on adaptations of European and American stories, those scripts presented in this book are unique for being based on classic Chinese stories, readapted and written in English. The book is divided into three grades in terms of grammar and vocabulary difficulty, making it suitable for young English learners from primary schools to junior and high schools.

All the scripts in the book are written by top playwrights with elegant, pure and vivid language. The scripts are provided with a summary of the story in both Chinese and English, so that readers can fully understand the plot as well as the history and culture behind it. Readers can not only improve their English skills through immersive reading and performance but also appreciate Chinese culture.

Hu Min, English education expert and founder of the New Channel, said the combination of traditional Chinese culture and English teaching has become a trend, guiding young people to tell Chinese stories to the world with their own wisdom and deep Chinese cultural heritage. The New Channel will offer special courses on Stories of China: Performed in English in its many schools across the country, and cooperate with primary and secondary schools in Beijing, Shanghai to offer English drama courses on a trial basis. Hu believes the courses will set off a new wave of enthusiastic learning among young people.

My mother and I don't speak the same language. Her English is not good, and my Mandarin stopped at the picture-book level on the day I started kindergarten in California, as I realized that the few English words I knew weren't going to get me very far. I immersed (沉浸) myself in strange grammar and new vocabulary. As my mother tongue withered (逐渐淡去) in my mind, English allowed me to explain my personhood here and silence the narrative that I was just a shy, odd Asian. 

My wish to write, however, made me unintelligible to my mother. She couldn't understand why I'd spoil other better chances. I'd tried to communicate with her in Chinese, searching my mind for sentences: How could I describe my gratitude for a path to self-fulfillment when all I could say was "kai xin" or "happy"? Without the words to bridge the gap between our worldviews, our dissatisfaction and worry turned into stubbornness. 

I landed a day job editing a design magazine but worked on my novel in my off-hours. As its main characters, Marissa and Kathleen's mother-daughter relationship was similar to my own, troubled and split by cultural differences—though always revived by love. But the book is in English, so my mom won't be able to read it. 

Writing the book gave me a reason to mine for details about my family. I'd spent so much of my adolescence shedding (摆脱) my background that when I reached adulthood, I became interested in our history. I started asking questions, hoping to find a new understanding of us. 

Her answers were mixed with joyful memories, like the pleasant smell of the flowers my mother would pin to her blouse, or the hubbub(喧闹)of visiting her cousins in the countryside. As her world became clearer to me, I came closer to knowing who she is. 

When I showed my mother a copy, she noticed her Chinese name in the acknowledgments and said in Mandarin with a shaking voice, "Now I know you truly love me." I wish it hadn't taken this long to find a way to tell her. She may not understand it word for word, but I know she gets the message.
