Toronto Wildlife Centre's rescue team wants to match their expert skill with the latest technology to help more animals.

The rescue team wants to help animals fast and with an even higher success rate. They are looking at technology ranging from as simple as a quick-firing net gun to as complex as a remotely controlled trail camera that is connected to the network. This would immediately inform them with a photo if an animal has been successfully trapped, or has returned to a site that they are monitoring.

A compact thermal imager（热成像仪） is another piece of equipment that the rescue team is looking at to add to their tool box. The technology would allow the rescuers to see an animal more easily. This would be useful for finding animals hidden in brush, rescuing wildlife stuck inside buildings, or finding animals at night when it's too dark to see. "Say we know there's an injured animal in a backyard with many hiding spots. We don't want to storm there and scare him away. We want to be able to predict this movement and rescue him as effectively as possible and the only way we can do that is by knowing where he is," the rescue team leader, Andrew Wight said.

The team also has their eye on a camera-equipped drone （无人驾驶飞机）."We want to use drones for sky watching in situations like when we have a baby bird that came from a nest that is difficult to access. If there's no other baby in the nest, we can build a new nest, and the parents will simply find their baby and relocate to the new nest. If there's another baby in the nest, we can't separate the family and will need to return the baby to the original one. If we have a camera-equipped drone, we will easily see if there are any other babies in the original nest and plan accordingly," Andrew explained.

Disney finally has its first young plus-size heroine, and fans across the Internet are in high spirits.

"Reflect" is a short film now on Disney about a young ballet dancer named Bianca who struggles with her body image. In the short（短片）, Bianca doesn't want to but has to look at herself in the mirror, checking her posture. Always feeling depressed to find herself fatty and ugly, she almost gives up dancing ballet. Though body positivity and self-acceptance can be easier said than done, eventually, she overcome her negative feelings and dance freely.

Though the film was first released on the platform in September, many social media users are now celebrating "Reflect" as a win for representation among the young.

Making the film from the perspective of a dancer, director Hillary Bradfield explained, felt natural. "When people watch the short, I hope that they can feel more positively about themselves and how they look, and feel okay about the tough parts of their journey," Bradfield said.

Teens In The New Era

A lantern installation (灯组), the "A Night of Fish and Dragon Dance,"  (light) up Shanghai's Yuyuan Garden malls on Friday. The annual Yuyuan Garden lantern show in Shanghai,  (list) as one form of cultural heritage, is one of the country's  (old) lantern fairs.

Now, the lantern show is taking place outside of China for  very first time, with 60large-sized bright structures and more than 2,000 lanterns lightening the Jardin d'Acclimatation —the oldest amusement park in Paris, as a way to celebrate the upcoming 2024 Year  the Dragon. Inspired by the legendary world of Shanhai Jing,  "The Classic of Mountains and Seas", a Chinese literary classic, the Yuyuan Garden lantern show in Paris has built a world of lights and imagination for visitors. Highlighting various cultural and spiritual  (symbol), the lantern displays include mythical creatures such as Kunpeng and Yinglong, representing ambition and strength.

Art Appreciation

Art appreciation is an often overlooked skill. It's more than simply looking at a piece of art and judging it based on what we see. It requires us to look deeper, beyond the surface into the artist's intention.  The following tips would help you achieve it.

The first step is to prepare yourself mentally. Before you begin viewing any artwork, take moments to clear your mind of what a piece you think should look like.  That's because an artist can present a unique visual experience by combining line, shape, form, color and space creatively.

Besides, examine the artwork closely. Take note of its elements mentioned above. Consider how these elements work together to convey meaning or emotion in the piece. Notice how the work makes you feel.  What can I see? What is the artwork saying? What feelings does it arouse in me?

 Information about the artist and when the artwork was created can help you uncover the deeper symbolism present in the work that may not be immediately evident. Art is often used as a tool for social change. To appreciate art, it's important to understand the context where it was created. The context behind a piece can be found through research and analysis.

Last but not least, sharing opinions on art also helps. Try discussing your thoughts on artwork with friends or family who may have different opinions. Taking the diverse understanding into consideration, you can approach viewing art work from different viewpoints. As a result, you can gain a new appreciation every time you look at it. 

Amblyopia is the most common cause of vision loss in children. In all cases of amblyopia, there's a stronger eye and a weaker eye, and it's winner-take-all in the cortex (大脑皮层). The cortex learns to ignore the signal from the weaker eye. By ignoring the weaker eye, the brain doesn't fuse (融合) images from both eyes. As a result, people with amblyopia can have trouble seeing in 3D.

In an attempt to solve this problem, doctors start treating patients with amblyopia at a young age, while their brain pathways are still developing. The children, usually under 7 years old, are often told to wear an eye patch over their strong eye to force the brain to rely on the weaker. But whenever the eye pa tch is removed, the competition can start over. For lasting improvement, new treatments need to teach the brain to stop suppressing(抑制) key visual cues coming from the weaker eye, says neuroscientist Dennis Levi of the University of California.

Now, several research teams are taking a new way that aims to get the brain to make better use of the information coming from both eyes. Several companies are working on treatment s based on this new angle. One is called Luminopia.

Luminopia's therapy involves having children watch videos through a virtual reality headset. As the children watch, the headset blocks out certain parts of the display for each eye, so the patients actually have to combine input from the two images to get the full video.

The company conducted a trial showing that children with amblyopia begin to see better on eye chart assessments after three months of one-hour sessions done six days a week. But they have yet to measure improvements in long-term effectiveness. It is believed that if people with amblyopia don't learn to fuse signals from both eyes from a young age, they never will. So some scientists think attempting to treat adults, whose brains have suppressed signals from their weak eye for decades, is a lost cause.
