It's January and time to go back to school. For some, that might be a gloomy prospect after the joys of the post Christmas festive period. For me, though, it's as exciting as a trip to Antarctica, also as scary as starting a job for which I'm not sure whether I'm qualified.

To be embarking on a master's degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling at Regent's University at 71 is perhaps an unlikely route for someone who dropped out of school at 17. But now I've come full circle to the conclusion that nothing, for me, feels more stimulating at this point in my life than learning new things. That studying, far from being the bore and the chore it used to be, is a treat.

Turning 70 came as something of a shock. I started to feel I was drifting. Without a big project, and without any major family responsibilities, I was starting to feel I was lying on a bed of thorns. Friends of similar age were lapping up their lives, socializing and travelling. However, I longed for something more. Or perhaps not more, but different.

As the gloom grew, I thought perhaps I needed to see a therapist. A friend, a psychotherapist, suggested that while therapy might be useful, doing a course on the basics of psychotherapy and counselling might be more up my street. Without too much thinking, I decided to give it a shot.

So that's how every weekday I beep（发出哔哔声） myself through the gate with my student pass, which makes me smile every time. I feel privileged to be exposed to a group of my fellow students who are willing to be open to me.

While ageing is an inevitable process, we can get rid of a lot of the rules about what's age-appropriate. Studying for a master's degree in old age is a challenge, but it has provided me with a new perspective on life. Hence, ageing should never limit your ambitions.

Chiang Mai

Tips: Pick up a hiking option from an experienced operator that has in-depth knowledge of the area because it is a fairly large one.

Doi Inthanon

Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand. It is also one of the most beautiful places with three impressive waterfalls that flow down quickly. As you travel along the 47-kilometre road to the top, you will pass a few small villages of the Karen Hill Tribes and rice fields.

Tips: Make sure to have an experienced guide.

Hua Hin

One of the most incredible things to do is hiking in Hua Hin. The area features its elephant camps. You can care for the elephants, like feeding and bathing them. It must be a special experience to ride on the back of a tall elephant while exploring this beautiful region.

Tips: Make sure to pack extra clothes if you plan to bathe the elephants.

Kamphaeng Phet

As a historically significant part of Thailand, Kamphaeng Phet is a quiet and charming province with many cultural and natural attractions. You can explore the ancient ruins that are scattered throughout the province.

Tips: Be respectful of the statues and other religious monuments.

A young man named Monty Roberts who was the son of an itinerant (巡回的) horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch (大农场) to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continuously interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the truck. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 40000 square-foot house that would sit on the 200-acre dream ranch.

"He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, "See me after class."

The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, "Why did I receive an F?"

The teacher said, "This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it." Then the teacher added, "If you rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade."

How to Spend Time Properly

Sometimes referred to as the Thailand Water Festival, Songkran is an annual event that marks the  (begin) of the Thai New Year. It's the  (large) celebration throughout the whole country.

The festival kicks off  April 13 and usually lasts three days though festivities can start early or end later in some cities. The holiday's main focus is about moving forward — in fact, the word Songkran comes from a phrase in  Sanskrit language that means "passage of the sun".

Water plays a major role in the festival.  (symbolical) it washes away the previous year so people can get ready for the next one.

Many families wake up early during Songkran and visit Buddhist temples,  they bring offerings such as food and listen to monks as they preach. People sprinkle clean or scented water over statues of Buddha to represent purification and good fortune. Younger  (visit) also pour water on the hands of elderly relatives and friends  (show) their respect and ask for blessings in the coming year.

Honoring family traditions and  (religion) practices are important, but so is having some fun. Outside, Songkran  (celebrate) with street parties featuring loud music and a giant friendly water fight!

Joan Donovan was 84 years old when she finished her college degree, but the great-grandmother said she didn't want to stop learning just yet.

"I couldn't wait to get up in the morning to go to school. I met the most 1 people and fessors. Everyone surrounded me with 2 and support. And I learned that I had a 3 for writing," Donovan said. "That's when I found Southern New Hampshire University, which is a wonderful school. I just loved every minute of it."

Four years later, on December 13, 2022, Donovan graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a master's 4 in creative writing.

Donovan said the university heard she was graduating when her son called the school to 5 a frame for her diploma as a Christmas present. 6 , the school decided to send more than just a framed diploma, including a cap and gown, cupcakes, balloons and university spirit wear (印有大学精神的服装).

When she was young, Donovan's mother called her "Brilliant". She started first grade at the age of 4 and graduated high school by 16. The family couldn't 7 college, but she was able to take some post-graduate classes for free at her high school.

Donavan always wanted a 8 education, but marriage, babies and a busy life 9 things a bit. But she never gave up on her dream.

"I'm a goal-seeker," she said. "And it was a goal, and I10 it. It's a dream come true, really." Now, Donovan said she is using her new degree to write a novel as well as an autobiography.

"Well, I waited 60 years to 11 my dream. So I hope others don't have to wait that long," said Donovan, adding that her autobiography will be about 12 the "roadblocks" of life.

Donovan, who has 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, said the most important thing she's learned in life is to be a "13 learner".

"Don't ever give up. I mean,14 something doesn't work the first time, just try it again," she said. "And 15 , you'll find your dream come true."

We're all suffering from poorer concentration nowadays.  Here are some simple habits to try.

Minimize distraction.

 Work in a different room if you can. If you find yourself sidetracked (转移目标) by digital devices, turn off notifications (通知) and train yourself to check them at set intervals. Set a timer.

Parts of East Asia could see "rivers in the sky" form due to climate change, bringing record-breaking levels of rainfall with them, a new study has revealed.

The team, from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, have already seen clear signs of global warming hitting parts of the country, so they wanted to see how bad things could get. "It's been becoming more and more clear that global warming means more than just warmer temperatures," they wrote.

One particularly-damaging extreme weather event is an increase in rainfall to unexpected and unprecedented (前所未有的) levels, which can result in flooding. To help predict rainfall events, researchers looked to one of the causes — the interaction of atmospheric rivers with mountain ranges.

"As the name suggests, atmospheric rivers are long, narrow bands of concentrated water vapour flowing through the atmosphere," the team explained. "When one of these bands meets a barrier, such as a mountain range, it can produce extreme levels of rainfall or snowfall."

Parts of East Asia have been subjected to (遭受) an increasing number of damaging, extreme weather events over the past decade.

To understand the impact, the team used high-resolution global atmospheric circulations model simulations (模拟) that virtually re-create the conditions in the atmosphere. They then looked at other regional climate models, comparing simulations based on real, meteorological data (气象数据) from 1951 to 2010 to predictions for 2090.

Authors used the climate scenario that would result in 4℃ of warming, compared to preindustrial levels — which is significantly more than 2℃ target set as part of Paris Climate Agreement.

First author, Professor Yoichi Kamae, said that their simulations predict strengthened water vapour transport, as well as increased rainfall at unprecedented levels. In simulations the greatest amounts of atmospheric river-related rainfall occurred on the southern and western slopes of mountains in East Asia, including in Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and northeastern China. They had to limit the study to East Asia due to computer time and processing limitations, but predict it would apply to other regions around the world.

People who keep chickens as pets or barnyard animals tend to be quite passionate about them. Similar to those who keep cats and dogs as animal friends, chicken owners love to spoil their little ones. If that means building tiny amusement parks to keep them happy, then that's exactly what they will do.

What happens if chickens get bored?

Bored chickens tend to engage in bad behaviors. These can include pecking at and fighting with one another and pulling out each other's feathers.

There is another fun toy you can build for your chickens, and all you need is some old bicycle tires. Chicken merry-go-rounds are about to become all the rage (风靡一时) in chicken society. To do this, all you need to do is remove the wheel from a bike. Then lay the wheel out over top something so the chickens are able to spin and ride on top. The chickens seem to know how to jump right on and go for a ride. They might not react like a human on a rollercoaster (过山车), but their behavior tends to show it is an enjoyable experience for them. The wheels can be spread out through your garden, backyard, or wherever your chickens like to roam. They help make their days more interesting, fun, and unique!

A schoolgirl has created a solar-powered backpack that filters out air pollution after being inspired by her asthmatic (患哮喘病的) mother.

Eleanor Woods, 12, from High Burton, Huddersfield, a town in West Yorkshire, northern England, entered the "Backpack to the Future" competition after her mother put the application form in her room. She went on to win the award for her innovative bag.

The "Backpack to the future" competition was launched to change perceptions (认知), encourage more diversity within engineering and to show children how they could combine an interest in fashion with a career in science, technology, engineering or math.

Powered by green energy from solar power and a dynamo — a machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy — the backpack filters polluted air before fanning out cleaner air nearby. "I have an air filter at home because my mum has mild asthma. My Breathe Better Backpack is all about keeping my friends, family and classmates safe using an air filter. It looks cool and will help get kids outside and fight off colds," Eleanor said. "The first thing that came to mind is that blue is one of my favorite colors and blue feels clean and the bubbles on the outside have a clean theme for breathing."

The pandemic spurred on Eleanor's awareness of how pollution affects a person's health and the spread of diseases. Spending a lot of time with her asthmatic mum over several lock downs gave the 12-year-old food for thought.

The schoolgirl added: "My generation is really aware of pollution, and we have lessons on it at school along with diseases spreading, and this is another reason I designed this, because it is getting much worse."

The young designer said she is becoming increasingly aware of the pollution that surrounds her, as she lives on a main road. Eleanor said: "I walk to school, next to the road, and can taste the petrol when buses come through."

Speaking after winning the competition, Eleanor said the impact of her backpack will be far-reaching. "If just a few people start using it, it could be really good for the planet," she said.
