  • 4、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was August, the busiest season for tourism. Oliver Holland, the owner of a restaurant in a scenic spot, was expecting as many as 500 tourists to visit and eat there each day. With a joyful heart, he jumped into his truck and set off to his restaurant. Before he turned onto the main road he had to go through an eleven-kilometer tunnel. It was the only access to his restaurant from his home.

Two years earlier a truck caught fire inside the tunnel and its closure for repairs was a huge blow to his business. When the road to his restaurant was blocked, the stream of tourists stopped. Although it was difficult, he managed to keep his staff on.

"This year will be a perfect year." Oliver thought.

Inside the tunnel everything went normal. But when he was near the end, Oliver spotted an unusual light 50 meters ahead. Then he saw something burning.

He stopped in his tracks and saw a tour bus on fire! At the back where the engine was, dozens of tourists were running towards him.

"They're going the wrong way." Oliver thought, knowing the tunnel exit was just 500 meters ahead. Then he realized the bus was now burning so fiercely that it was impossible for them to get around it.

As a former volunteer firefighter, Oliver first had to raise the alarm. "A bus is on fire Stop the traffic!" he texted with shaking hands, while thick smoke pouring out of the bus kept blowing in his direction under the influence of the strong wind. In no time it would black out the tunnel, choking and blinding anyone inside it. There was no chance for the poor tourists to survive. Every minute counted.

  • 8、Knowing how and when to say goodbye is often difficult, even in informal situations. But learning to say goodbye appropriately is a skill that will help you maintain (维系) your relationships. It's also easier than it seems sometimes.

Plan an appropriate time to talk before the departure. If someone you know is leaving for several years to go overseas, or leaving for college, it can be a stressful and busy time while he/she is planning a trip.

Typically, dinnertime, when you can wander around your favorite neighborhood, or spend time together doing something both of you have always enjoyed, like watching a game, is a good choice.

Share your funniest stories and recall happy things. Dig deep into your past: the things you've done together, the time you have spent together or maybe even how you met.

Be open and friendly. It's important to build the standing of the relationship. If you want to keep in contact, let them know. If you have no intentions of staying in touch, don't ask for contact details. Otherwise, it can leave a departing friend wondering about your sincerity.

When it's time to leave, make it brief and sincere. If you need to express complex feelings, consider writing them in a letter for the person to read later. In person, keep things light and fun. Hug, say your piece, and wish them luck during their journey. Don't overstay your welcome.

    A. Let go of the past.

    B. Read on to learn how to say goodbye.

    C. Talk about the good times you've had.

    D. Exchange new phone and address information.

    E. So choose a proper time to meet and say goodbye.

    F. Most people don't enjoy a long and drawn- out goodbye.

    G. Therefore, don't worry about saying goodbye when you leave.

  • 9、"We thought dogs would behave like children under age 5, but now we guess that perhaps dogs can understand when someone is being deceitful," says Ludwig Huber at the University of Vienna in Austria. "Maybe they think, ‘This person knows the truth but is giving me the wrong information.'"

Huber and his colleagues trained 260 dogs to find hidden food in one of two covered bowls. The dogs learned to follow the suggestion of a person they had never met — the communicator — who would touch the food- filled bowl, glance at the dog, and say, "Look, this is very good!" Dogs appeared to trust this new person when they were reliably following the signal, says Huber.

Once that trust was built, the team had the dogs witness another person move the food from the first to the second bowl. The communicators were either in the room, and also witnessed the switch, or were briefly absent and so apparently unaware that the food had been switched (转移). In either case, the communicators would later recommend the first bowl, which was now empty.

The dogs in the new experiment weren't so trusting of lying communicators, says Huber. Half of the dogs would follow the communicator's misleading advice if the communicator hadn't witnessed the food switch. But about two-thirds of dogs ignored a communicator who had witnessed the food switch and still recommended the now-empty bowl. These dogs simply went to the bowl filled with food instead.

"This study reminds us that dogs are watching us closely, picking up on our social signals, and are learning from us constantly even outside of formal training contexts," says Monique Udell at Oregon State University.

The fact that half of the dogs trusted the communicator who seemed to have made an honest mistake could reveal a lot about how dogs process social information, says Udell. "There is both genetic and behavioral evidence that dogs are hypersocial, meaning that many dogs have a difficult time ignoring social cues (暗示) even when another solution might be more advantageous," she says.

(1)、What does the word "deceitful" underlined in the first paragraph probably mean?
    A、Unfriendly. B、Frightened. C、Dishonest. D、Upset.
(2)、The dogs were the least likely to trust the communicator who ______.
A、recommended the food-filled bowl B、didn't witness the food switch at all C、knew the food switch and told the truth D、saw the food switch and gave wrong advice
(3)、What does Monique Udell suggest about dogs?
A、They easily ignore social cues. B、They can recognize social signals. C、They hardly get social signals. D、They always trust human beings.
(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A、Dogs Tend to Follow Misleading Advice B、Dogs May ignore Those Who Lie to Them C、Dogs Can Recognize the Food-filled bowl D、Dogs Always Put Trust in Human Beings
  • 10、Sometimes astronauts get into a sticky situation up in space. When something needs repairing, it often turns out that duct tape is a preferred fix-it all. Since tearing the tape with one hand while floating is no easy task, high school students just came up with a brilliant solution. They invented a duct tape dispenser (强力胶带分割器) that is out of this world!

Students belonging to HUNCH (High School Students United With NASA) have just made life a lot easier for astronauts. In the 18 years since the program operated, students have been busy designing and building equipment that is then used on the International Space Station (ISS). And now, students from five states combined their efforts to come up with a solution to the duct tape dilemma.

Duct tape, called "grey tape", along with Kapton high temperature tape, is a necessary tool for astronauts. Over the years, these tapes have come in handy in times of emergency.

As early as 1970, it was used on the Apollo 13 mission. Using duct tape, astronauts took a flight manual cover, a plastic bag, and a sock to repair a power-providing solar equipment that was torn. And in 1972, the crew on Apollo 17 sealed a map onto a damaged fender of the lunar rover (月球车挡板), which was affixed (粘合) by duct tape.

Yet the sticky issue of duct tape is that astronauts do not have two hands to tear it. The only way to tear it is with one's teeth or with scissors.

The students designed a tape dispenser that locks into place on the guard rail. The tape dispenser provides a clean cut and can be used easily with one hand, and several rolls of tape can be placed on it at one time.

It is already being used aboard the ISS. Colonel Mike Hopkins provided a glowing review aboard the spacecraft and showed the dispenser in action. "I think this tape dispenser is going to find a lot of use here on the International Space Station," Hopkins said.

(1)、What is the duct tape dilemma for astronauts?
A、Tearing the tape. B、Recognizing the tape. C、Making the tape in space. D、Keeping the tape floating.
(2)、What message does paragraph 4 mainly convey?
A、Fixing equipment proves demanding. B、Astronauts have hard access to tapes. C、Space travel is challenging and tiring. D、Duct tape is important for astronauts.
(3)、Why is Colonel Mike Hopkins mentioned?
A、To praise the students' invention. B、To doubt reviews from the public. C、To explain how to use the dispenser. D、To show the dispenser's characteristic.
(4)、From which section of a newspaper is the text most probably taken?
    A、Travel. B、Medicine. C、Technology. D、Environment.
  • 11、Whatever sport she played in her four years at Maryvale Prep, recent graduate Maggie Stalter likes to set goals. Diagnosed (诊断) with hearing loss when she was 10 months old, the 18-year-old has always understood that she has to work harder than others to reach them.

Stalter played sports at Maryvale. Running turned out to be her athletic calling. She first took part in outdoor track in her junior year and further joined the cross country team last fall as a senior. She also played other kinds of sports at school despite her hearing problem.

To compensate for her hearing loss, Stalter has had cochlear implants (人工耳蜗植入) since early childhood. The devices provide her with a sense of sound. Stalter says that lip reading, which adds to what she hears through the implants, and connecting with teachers and classmates to track back on material that she didn't get for the first time make her feel stressed. But she admits that she is lucky enough. Sports have been a rewarding release (释放), with running topping the list.

Her favorite part about running is finding out what she's capable of and having the chance to celebrate it with teammates. That opportunity came after the Lions cross country team won the championship last fall.

For Stalter, who didn't decide she would run cross country until two weeks before the first practice, it was a season-long reward as she worked her way up. Throughout the season, coach Jason Miller, who communicated with Stalter through a microphone-like device, used hand signals and made sure she stood up front during team talks.

Fellow recent graduate Rachel Thomas, the Lions captain and top runner, called Stalter her unofficial co-captain for the positive influence she had on the team. "I never saw anybody work harder than Maggie," Thomas said. "Our teammates would always say when they saw Maggie cheering them on, they knew they all had to run harder."

(1)、What can we know about Stalter?
A、She prefers to do sports alone. B、She dislikes setting sports goals. C、She tried various sports at school. D、She lost hearing during running.
    (2)、Why does Stalter feel lucky?
A、Lip reading never appears stressful for her. B、She communicates well with her classmates. C、Her running performances rank high on the list. D、Sports help to reduce her pressure from hearing loss.
(3)、What did Jason Miller do for Stalter?
A、He taught her to give talks. B、He gave her special care as a coach. C、He cured her of hearing loss. D、He trained her in a very casual way.
(4)、Which of the following words can best describe Stalter in Thomas's opinion?
    A、Modest. B、Adventurous. C、Organized. D、Inspiring.
  • 12、Are you looking for translated novels to gain new perspectives from other lands and cultures? Here are four of the all-time classics.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kalka (German)

Imagine waking up one morning as a huge cockroach (蟑螂). Such is the life of Gregor Samsa, the formerly-human-now-insect hero in The Metamorphosis. Realizing that only he has changed while all else remains the same, Gregor must examine his relationship to his family and the humanity. The short novel is a soul-searching examination of family, money and obligation (责任) in early 20th century industrialized Germany.

My Name Is Red by Orhan Pamuk (Turkish)

Translated by Erdag Goknar, this novel paints a vivid picture of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Murad Ⅲ's rule. The story starts off with one of the Sultan's favorite artists being cruelly murdered. From there, each character tells their own story, sometimes breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the reader. It's unlike any murder story you've ever read.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (Portuguese)

One of the best translated novels is The Alchemist, which tells the true story of a young man named Santiago. The cultural influences are inspiring, as there is much detailed information from the young man's journey from Spain to Morocco, and eventually to Egypt. The vivid description makes it one of the best travel journals ever produced.

News of a Kidnapping (绑架) by Gabriel Garcia Márquez (Spanish)

Gabriel Garcia Márquez started out as a journalist, and in News of a Kidnapping, he investigates a series of kidnappings in Colombia. These are real-life kidnappings, and Márquez accounts the emotions of the victims and their families. The personalities of the kidnappers are also described, and the way in which they transformed from regular people into beasts is particularly fascinating.

    (2)、Who is a translator?
    A、Orhan Pamuk. B、Erdag Goknar. C、Paulo Coelho. D、Gabriel Garcia Márquez.
