Thomas Bogle has worked in the footwear industry for years. He also loves to run. He runs every day in the forest near his home in Colorado. But while training for a race, he couldn't stop thinking about the bits of plastic and rubber that his shoes were shedding on the forest floor.
With every step we take, our shoes leave behind an invisible trail of contaminants(污染物). These contaminants can potentially harm the soil, water and animal health.
Shoes contain different types of plastics. Every year, about 500,000 tons of microplastics seep into the world's oceans. Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic. They form as larger plastic objects break down. They can harm living things and the environment.
Now, several companies are starting to develop plant-based soles (鞋底). They don't leave plastics behind when they break down. Plant-based soles address some of these issues. They won't shed plastic into the environment. Plus, they generate fewer toxic chemicals. But shoes made with natural materials face some of the same challenges as plastic-based shoes once they're thrown out. Taking the shoes apart is still hard. Recycling shoes will require setting up new systems.
Bogle had an idea to create an entirely plastic-free shoe outsole. He got some help from Gene Kelly. He is a professor of soil science at Colorado State University and a fellow runner. Together, Bogle and Kelly developed a shoe sole. It is made of beeswax, vegetable oils and plant products such as leaves and husks from corn and other crops.
Bogle's company, Solum, partners with farmers across the country. The farmers grow and harvest the plant materials. Then, the materials are transformed into little plant balls and blended with natural rubber to create the sole. Solum's shoes don't shed toxic chemicals. Instead, the soles put nutrients back into the soil as they naturally wear down over time.
These days, Bogle runs, hikes and golfs in shoes with his company's plant-based soles. "Footwear is a very hard product to fix," he said. "It really requires completely shifting how we think about footwear and how we make footwear and the materials we use."

For a long time, I kept a selection of books on a shelf next to my bed that I called my. "heart books". To qualify for a place on the shelf, a book had to be not only one I loved, but one that mattered. There was one book that never made it onto that shelf, though I read it in high school: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg.
I can still remember the day I bought it. It was summer and I must have been 14 or 15. Desperate to get out of my house, I rode my bike into town and walked into the bookstore. I was going through the shelf of books on writing and it caught my eye. I picked it up, read a few pages, and bought it. Then I took it with me to a park, read the first few chapters, and opened my notebook to write.
It's a fairly straightforward writing book. Goldberg's method is simple: you choose a topic, set a timer, and write for 10, 15, or 20 minutes without picking up your pen. Free writing, timed writing, writing topics: anyone who has taken a creative writing class may have encountered these things. There was nothing particularly new or unusual about the book so I can't say why it attracted me so much. But it changed everything. I went from being someone who enjoyed writing to being a writer.
During my teen years and early twenties, following Goldberg's method was at the core of my identity. No matter where I was or what I was doing, I filled notebooks. When I eventually started writing fiction, I did the same thing. The "I" in my notebooks became someone else, but I held to the same practice.
This writing practice led me to a writing group in Boston. It led me to my current career. It led me, in so many ways, to myself. Becoming a writer allowed me to become so many other things: an activist, a business owner, a farmer, a baker... Writing is where I found my confidence. It was where I became curious about the world. From that, everything else has followed.
(1)、What can we learn about Writing Down the Bones from the first two paragraphs?A、It was among the list of "heart books". B、It was recommended by her teacher. C、The author encountered it in a bookstore. D、The author treasured it on her book shelf.(2)、What does the author think of Goldberg's method?A、Unique and innovative. B、Ordinary and normal. C、Direct and typical. D、Attractive and inspiring.(3)、What did the author do while writing?A、She strictly followed Goldberg's writing steps. B、She wrote on her notebook whenever possible. C、She kept practicing through different methods. D、She imagined many characters in her fictions.(4)、Which is the suitable title for the text?A、Natalie Goldberg and Her Book. B、The Start of My Writing Career. C、Confidence Found Through Writing. D、Chai n Reaction Caused by A Book. -

More Than a Medical Kit
"Anybody have a bandage?" a voice rang down the dorm hallway.
It was our first week at college and we were all experiencing nervousness. I had forgotten to bring snacks for late nights but would never ask any of my roommates to share theirs. I was shy, always worried about fitting in a new situation and meeting people.
Several months before, I sat at my high school graduation party admiring my gifts and battling waves of post-high school sentimentality (多愁善感). Books were scattered around my feet. Laundry items, desk supplies — all well-intentioned and well-received. They would demonstrate their givers' thoughtfulness over and over during my college career.
But one gift struck me as strange. I frowned when I opened it. Medicine? A small packet of pills and creams, ointments and so on lay within the wrappings. Who would give that as a gift? I turned and Jenny, my best friend, grinned (露齿而笑).
"You'll need that once you're at school," She pointed out. "You won't have to chase down the campus nurse for every cough. Besides, that might bring you luck and chance." Hugging me tightly, she added.
Good point. She knew how anxious and frightened I felt about stepping onto a new journey, without her for company.
Not long after, in August, I packed my life into a borrowed truck and slipped the bag of medicine in with all my necessities. I hardly thought about it once I reached campus, caught in the whirlwind of unpacking, book-buying, scheduling, and meeting new people.
When "anybody have a bandage?" rang out in the dormitory hall that day, I remembered my little medicinal package.
I swallowed self-consciously. "Actually," I gave a little wave, "I have one."
"Great," the girl jumped off her bed and walked toward me.

There is argument over the term hanfu, as some scholars prefer huafu; "Hua" represents the Chinese nation, all 56 of its ethnic (民族的) groups (include). However, since Han, Chinese are the dominant ethnic group in China. (basic), people refer to ancient Chinese clothing as hanfu.

Ancient Chinese clothing was very lightweight. People tend to believe ancient Chinese clothing was bulky and heavy. Although some garments (衣服) were indeed complicated and layered, many traditional clothes, especially made of silk, were designed to be lightweight and comfortable.
Putting on hanfu with proper ceremony was important in ancient Chinese society, as it was a way (distinguish) social roles. At that time, rules on how to wear, fold, and tie garments (follow) carefully to project an image of grace, modesty, and respect. Today, some of the flowers of the hanfu revival movement adopt same principles.

Seven years after a terrible fall left me paralyzed, here I was, with my two teammates, on the way to becoming the first all-disabled team to cross Europe's largest ice cap, the Vatnajökull glacier, unsupported and unassisted.

18、 根据短文内容,从短文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is likely that you've heard that the pitter-pattering (噼啪声) of raindrops can help people fall asleep. There's also research that supports the idea that rain sounds are a useful sleep aid. Here's what to know.
Rain sounds mask other sharper noises in your environment. Think of a dripping faucet (水龙头) in the other room —in silence, it could be very annoying. With a masking background of wind in the leaves, a soft rain, or some gentle waves playing on a speaker, the drip would never be detected.
Rain sounds might literally hit the right frequencies
By masking background sounds, rain tracks might seem like they're just ordinary white noise ——but they aren't. Named after colors, white noise is an umbrella term for a variety of sounds. Rain sounds are considered pink noise, which is characterized by louder sounds at a low frequency and softer sounds at high frequencies. . But this may not be the case for everyone.
Rain sounds have a calming effect
Apart from helping people fall asleep, rain sounds can be straight-up relaxing. It may be explained by the fact that they're a natural sound and natural sounds are psychologically beneficial. . For example, people exposed to nature sounds in a 2017 study had an increased nerve response, which means that the calming part of their nervous system was activated by these tracks.
Rain sounds could be meat or poison
. Different sounds will bring out different responses depending on the individual. One person's gentle rain is others' flood worry or need to go to the bathroom. Similarly, gentle rain with distant thunder is calming for some and alarming for others. Will they work for you? There's only one way to find out!
A.Rain sounds hide other noises
B.Rain sounds are a universal tool
C.White noise makes people fall asleep quickly
D.So rain sounds can create a calming background "music"
E.Rain sounds might help someone, but they're not for everyone
F.Pink noise in particular can improve sleep in healthy individuals
G.The benefits include increased learning capacity and reduced anxiety

Josefa Marin went to New York from Mexico in 1987, supporting her daughter back home with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factory. With that small income, she had to collect recyclables, trading in cans for five cents each.
When the clothing factory closed down in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler, picking up cans and bottles to make ends meet.
Marin's story is not unique. Millions around the world make a living from picking through waste and reselling it — a vital role that keeps waste manageable. In New York City, the administrative department collects only about 28 percent of the cans that could be recycled. Rubbish collectors keep millions of additional recyclables out of landfills every year.
Yet collectors are ruled out by government policies. The United States Supreme Court in 1988 stated that household garbage is public property once it's on the street. That enables police to search rubbish for evidence, but that protection hasn't always been extended to recyclers. And in places like New York City, which is testing city-owned locked containers to hide garbage from rats, containers are made clearly inaccessible for collectors.
"There's value in the waste, and we feel that value should belong to the people, not the city or the corporations", says Ryan Castalia, director of a nonprofit recycling and community center in Brooklyn.
Recognized or not, waste pickers have long been treated with disrespect. Marin recalls an occasion when someone living next to a building where she was collecting cans threw water at her. "It doesn't mean I am less of a person than anyone else because I recycle", she says.
Some governments are starting to realize that protecting the environment and humanity go hand in hand. The United Nation's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, for example, calls for an end to poverty and all the risks it brings.
(1)、Why does the author start the passage with Marin's story?A、To suggest waste collectors' importance. B、To reflect laid-off workers' hardship. C、To praise her devotion to her daughter. D、To show the seriousness of unemployment.(2)、What can we learn about the waste mentioned in Paragraph 4?A、It is always available on the street for collectors. B、It is public property no matter where it is. C、It is actually only accessible for certain groups. D、It is hidden in containers for rats.(3)、What would Marin agree with?A、Business is business. B、No job is noble or humble. C、The early bird catches worms. D、One good turn deserves another.(4)、What's the writing purpose of this passage?A、To argue how important it is to get rid of poverty. B、To call on governments to work hand in hand to protect the environment. C、To prove that unemployed people can make a living by collecting recyclables. D、To tell that environmental protection is closely related to preserving humanity. -

A new form of real estate is popping up along the beaches of South Africa, which are just big enough to fit a family of African penguins. Their unique selling point: a safe and cool place for penguins to breed (繁殖).
Historically, the penguins dug holes in layers of guano (鸟粪), but in the 19th century, traders started selling guano as fertilizer, leaving the penguins and their eggs increasingly exposed to predators (捕食者) and the burning sun. This has caused African penguin populations to decrease. That's why conservationists have come to the rescue with the African Penguin Nest Project (APNP), which aims to employ artificial nests to provide penguin parents a safe and shaded place to raise their chicks.
While guano trade petered out by the late 1800s, recreating the layers that accumulated over thousands of years isn't an option, because seabird populations have declined so much over time and it would take around 600 years to produce one usable guano layer. Hence, the project decided to build artificial nests. At first glance, they look fairly simple--a domed structure made from two molded shells of fabric coated in ceramic slurry (陶瓷浆料),with a small entrance measuring about 20 centimeters wide.
Getting the right temperature and dampness inside the nest was the toughest and most crucial part. The two-layer design and ventilation holes (通风孔) create an air conditioning effect, while the white paint reflects the sun, helping to maintain an interior temperature of less than 35 degrees Celsius.
The project started to use the nests in late 2018."Within a matter of minutes, penguins were running into them," says Graham, coordinator of APNP. "That tells you how desperate they are for any opportunity to find a safe place to nest. However, population recovery relies on more than merely giving African penguins a safe place to breed. It's not simply a case of ‘we give them a nest, the species are saved ‘. There has to be more."
(1)、What do we know about artificial nests?A、They function better than natural nests. B、They are designed and built scientifically. C、They are unique attractions of South Africa. D、They are equipped with mini air-conditioners.(2)、What is the goal of APNP?A、To raise money to preserve penguins. B、To promote the sale of artificial nests. C、To help penguins fight against diseases. D、To provide habitable shelters for penguins.(3)、What does the underlined phrase "petered out" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A、turned up B、dried out C、faded away D、fell apart(4)、Which of the following statements might Graham agree with?A、Penguins breed more chicks in safer places. B、Various conservation efforts need be combined. C、Artificial nests have achieved the desired effect. D、Artificial nests should be applied to other species.
