  • 2、Everybody gets sad from time to time. Cheering someone up is all about taking the time to listen to them, understanding with what they're going through, and helping them get a bit of clue.

Listen to your sad friends. Half of the time, sad or stressed people aren't really looking for an artswer; they just want to be heard and have a chance to let out. Do you know why they're sad? Do they seem like sharing their feelings with you?

Ask them relevant questions. There's no better way to get involved in the conversation other than asking questions, especially questions about how the other person feels. Instead, your questions should motivate the person to talk about their feelings.

After figuring out just what the problem is, take a bit of time to think over what their best choice of action might be. Let them know you have an idea of what they could do. If you don't, be honest to them. Take them to a person who has a better fix for the problem than you have.

Get face to face if possible. For as great and easy technology makes life, it can also make everything a bit more difficult. It's tempting to want to send your friend a nice message via text, but that probably won't do it. . Since so much of life is spent behind a screen now, paying a face-to-face visit really means something.

    B. Share a similar story if appropriate.

    C. It's best to show you really care in person.

    D. Pull up a chair and give them a shoulder to cry on.

    E. Here are steps to help your friends start on the way to healing.

    F. Make them smile by reminding them how much you care about them.

    G. Asking questions that have nothing to do with the problem will confuse them.

  • 3、In today's fast-paced world, few technological advances have generated as much interest and concern as đeeptarke AI. The term "deepfake" combines "deep learning" and "fake", referring to AI systems that employ artificial intelligence and machine learning to produce videos and audio recordings that appear remarkably real. While deepfakes can have positive applications in entertainment and education, their potential for misuse in wrong hand to commit crimes by creating fake news raises significant moral and legal issues.

People train a computer model on a dataset of images and sounds to learn how a person looks and speaks from various angles. A more extensive dataset results in a more convincing deepfake. This process typically uses Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), where one model generates the fake while another detects it, continuously improving until the fake is highly similar to the real thing.

Deepfakes have diverse functions. In entertainment, they are used to de-age actors or enhance dubbing by imitating a speaker's mouth movements with a target language. In journalism, deepfake technology can recreate realistic scenarios for educational purposes. However, darker applications include creating false narratives for evil purposes, thus requiring close monitoring.

As deepfake technology advances, so do methods for detecting it. Early detection focused on visual clues like unnatural blinking and lip movements, but these signs are becoming less noticeable. Today, detection techniques use advanced AI systems to identify things invisible to the human eye. Additionally,block-chain technology can confirm the authenticity (真实性) of digital media, providing a secure record of original content.

As deepfake technology evolves, it presents exciting possibilities alongside significant risks. While it offers valuable applications across various fields, it also poses serious threats related to misinformation and fraud (诈骗). Collaboration among technology developers, lawmakers, and the public is essential to create regulations that maximize the benefits of deepfake AI while minimizing its dangers.

Calvin's day camp teacher, Autumn, passed out a sheet of paper with pictures and descriptions of different birds and a small pair of binoculars) (双筒望远镜) to each camper. He announced, "We're going to do a one-week challenge called ‘Big Week', where you try to identify birds and mark them on the paper. Whoever identifies the most birds wins."

Another challenge? Ever since camp started, Gladys had beaten Calvin at everything. If he won this one, maybe he'd finally show Gladys that she wasn't unbeatable. "How will you know if I really saw…" Calvin scanned the list. "… a glossy ibis?" "I won't," Autumn said. "A Big Week is based on honesty."

The next day at the preserve, when they hid behind some brush, Gladys spotted a great egret! "That was my gift to you," Gladys whisper-shouted with an I'm-going-to-win-this tone. "Like I would've missed that giant bird," Calvin protested. Suddenly, birds exploded above Calvin's head. Thunk! He fell down onto his back. Gladys rushed toward him, helped him up and advised, "Here's a tip: try being OUIET."

That evening, a large bird landed on Calvin's neighbor's tree. Calvin focused the binoculars. The bird had a bright red eye, a thick straight bill, a white throat and breast, and—oh, wow—long, thin, white feathers on the back of its head. "A black-crowned night heron!" he whispered excitedly. He was completely absorbed in his observation.

As the week went by, competition became fierce. Calvin had to win this contest. But chance seemed so slim! Then he remembered that he had found a feather that Autumn thought belonged to a Cooper's hawk close enough. He marked it, plus a few extra birds. What was the difference? He had seen them in the past, or he would see them eventually. He swallowed (吞咽) hard. No one will know the truth.

On the last day of Big Week, Autumn waved Gladys's checklist in the air. "Twenty-six is the number to beat. Anybody else?"

  • 10、As a child, I dreamed of becoming a writer, but the pursuit of dreams was never encouraged — leaving me to write secretly in my room. Life progressed and an interest in interior design surfaced in my teens. However, at my parents' insistence, I enrolled in secretarial school and worked in that area for twenty years.

So I signed up for a two-year interior-decorating course. I crammed two years of work into nine months to ensure that I received my diploma for my fortieth birthday.

The next step was to get some hands-on experience at a design firm. A visit to a newly opened interiors showroom ushered me into a dream job that opened more opportunities for me than I could have ever imagined. I worked as a decorating consultant at the showroom and I was on my way to creating the career I envisioned.

Opportunity knocked at my door in 1997. I peeked the possibility of writing a decorating column for a woman's magazine. The editor liked the idea and the monthly column debuted in February 1998. To master the finer skills, I signed up fora freelance (自由撰稿) writing course. Encouraging feedback from tutors gave me the confidence to submit my work for publication on the Internet. From around the world, people emailed to say that they identified with my experience to redefine myself and pursue my dream. Some even asked for advice. Soon, this hobby developed into a passion that consumed me. I now write two regular columns and my website is under construction.

I am doing what I love. On my journey, I have learned that it is never too late to pursue and live your dream.

    A. I met my self-set deadline with twelve days to spare.

    B. The response from readers was unexpected and overpowering.

    C. My family tells me that I look younger and seem more energetic.

    D. At 39, I felt a growing restlessness and a desire for a more creative life.

    E. I realized that I was involved in doing something I dreamed of as a child.

    F. Happy marriage with two kids and a job reawakened my teenage interest.

    G. I promised to myself I would let nothing prevent me from being a freelance writer.

  • 11、A team of scientists say that seawater flowing underneath and into gaps in the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is contributing to the melting of the massive ice formation.

"The worry is that we are underestimating the speed that the glacier is changing. It would be disastrous for coastal communities around the world," Christine Dow, co-author of the study, said in a press release.

At roughly 80 miles across, Thwaites is the widest glacier in the world, nicknamed the "Doomsday Glacier" for the fatal effects its melting could have on global sea-level rise. Each year, it loses about 50 billion tons of ice, which comprises roughly 4% of all sea-level rise worldwide, according to the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration. One estimate predicted that the total loss of Thwaites could cause average global sea levels to surge by more than two feet.

In the study, the team of glaciologists used radar data by Finland's ICEYE commercial satellite program to get a better idea of what's happening below the surface of the glacier. They found that seawater flows in and away from, the glacier with the tides, mixing with freshwater, but some of that warm ocean water also travels deep beneath the ice formation, going "through natural passages" or collecting "in holes" and becoming trapped.

"There are places where the water is almost at the pressure of the overlying ice, so just a little more pressure is needed to push up the ice," said Eric Rignot, the study's lead author. "The water is then squeezed enough to jack up a column of more than half a mile of ice."

Dow suggested that additional ice sheet modeling could help scientists better understand what's happening under these major glaciers and develop a more precise timeline of expected sea-level rise across the world. "This work will help people adapt to changing ocean levels, along with focusing on reducing carbon emissions to prevent the worst-case assumption," Dow said.

(1)、Why is Thwaites called "Doomsday Glacier"?
A、It is the largest glacier in the world. B、It comprises most of global sea-level rise. C、It is melting at an increasing high speed. D、It will cause huge disasters if entirely melting.
(2)、What effect does the trapped seawater have on the glacier?
A、It goes through the glacier, speeding melting. B、It mixes with freshwater, moving the glacier around. C、It increases pressure, lifting the glacier. D、It creates a barrier, preventing further melting.
(3)、Why is additional ice sheet modeling suggested?
A、To stop the melting process. B、To accurately predict sea-level rise. C、To help people change sea levels. D、To persuade people out of carbon emission.
(4)、What is a suitable title for the text?
A、The Worrisome Fate of Thwaites Glacier. B、Seawater's Role in Antarctic Melting. C、The Global Impact of Thwaites Glacier Melting. D、Ice Sheet Modeling for Sea-Level Rise Prediction.
  • 12、If you take a minute to think about the things that catch your attention, they're usually outsized (the Pyramids of Giza), extraordinarily delicate (a well-composed song), boldly colored (peacock feathers), or shocking (a bolt of lightning or a twist ending). These attention-grabbing things make us curious: Why is it like this? Where did the idea come from, or what made this happen?

From these questions come boundless story possibilities. From those ideas, though, we have to eventually cut them down to the ones worth telling, the ones that will grab and keep our readers' attention. This issue looks at that challenge from a variety of angles. Jane K. Cleland tackles the idea of thematic writing — writing that encourages readers to think about big issues that may or may not affect their lives, but at the very least will make them think What if… Then Jessica Strawser shares nine ways to write more authentic (真实的) child characters in adult fiction to bring a fresh perspective and engage readers. Tiffany Yates Martin takes on the debate of the controversial prologue (序言) — should you or shouldn't you use one? You'll have to read on to find out. When it comes to short fiction, Ran Walker offers tips for making the most of titles and first lines when every word counts. Finally, Amy Cook looks at the topic from a different angle — when your published book has stopped selling but you know it has more life in it, how can you use rights reversion to help it reach a new audience?

Our WD Interview for this issue features one author, Michael Cunningham. I was lucky enough to talk with him about his newest novel, Day, which features everything I love about a Cunningham novel: family drama, global issues made local, and impossibly affecting, heartbreaking prose. His writing advice was some of the most unexpected I've heard.

Maybe you're thinking about what you want to focus your attention on this year. Whatever your goal may be, we are glad to be with you along the way.

  • 13、Road trips were part of my childhood, but it is hard to say they are entirely fond memories. As someone who easily got carsick, I spent most of the long drives with my head against the window or leaning awkwardly to the side. More often, however, I would have to sleep through the CDs in our beaten car.

There was one CD that we often played, one that became the symbolic Road Trip CD in my mind. It was an album in Mandarin (普通话) by my mom's favorite music artist, Leon Lai, who I understood was a major Cantopop legend in his day. We seemingly only played the unidentified Leon Lai CD during our hour-long road trips. I didn't know what it was called until I was in high school and successfully uncovered it by searching through Leon Lai's albums on Spotify until I found the one like the CD cover art.

向往,or Longing, a 1998 Mandarin release, didn't seem to be one of Leon Lai's most famous works. My mom didn't seem to remember why she had it either. The fact that it was in Mandarin, however, made my parents even more willing to play it on repeat. To make up for me and my brother's embarrassing unfamiliarity with the Chinese language, throughout our childhood they were keen on having us watch shows and listen to music in Chinese as a way for us to immerse ourselves and make up for the ground we lost. They were usually in Mandarin, because that was what our formal Chinese schooling taught us, even though Cantonese was the dialect our family actually spoke. This at least meant I could use what I learned in class to understand the lyrics in this album, though I found the singing harder to understand.

Due to the endless exposure to the songs on the road, the genuinely memorable mix of upbeat and ballad-like tunes, as well as how well it shows my complicated connection to the Chinese language, this random album holds a special place in my heart.

(1)、How did the author feel during road trips?
    A、Bored. B、Anxious. C、Uncomfortable. D、Embarrassed.
(2)、How did the author find the album's name?
A、By asking his mother. B、By finding the CD case. C、By searching his high school. D、By matching the CD cover online.
(3)、What does the underlined word "This" mean in paragraph 3?
A、Chinese schooling. B、Family language. C、Music in Cantonese. D、Frequent exposure to Mandarin.
(4)、What does the album Longing mean to the author?
A、A favorite type of music. B、A cherished family tradition. C、A struggle with language identity. D、A connection between generations.

Mike, a pediatric cardiologist (小儿心脏病专家), lost a bunch of keys while cycling to the park to meet a friend. The keys were attached to a keychain with a crystal (水晶) photo of his daughter, which held great emotional value for him.

The crystal photo was more than just a decoration; it held his love for his daughter, whose smiling, lovely face always gave him strength, especially during challenging moments at work

When Mike realized the keys were missing, he felt anxious. He thought they might have fallen out of his backpack during the ride. Determined to find them, he retraced his steps and searched almost all the road. However, he still couldn't find them. Then he came up to check with the park service center, but several days later, there were no replies.

As the last effort, Mike turned to social media. He shared a heartfelt post in an online neighborhood group, describing his situation. The post was reshared by several community groups, quickly spreading the word for everyone to keep an eye out for the missing keys.

At the same time, a man named Chris found the keys near a tree in the park. Chris found them when he was on the way back home after caring for his little son at hospital, who had been suffering from serious heart disease. When he saw the photo of the little girl on the keychain, he thought they must be the keys of a parent who loved his or her daughter so much. Wanting to give them back to the owner, however, Chris didn't have any identifying information (识别信息). He considered leaving them on a bench on the roadside, but he was afraid that they might get lost again. Thinking twice, he finally decided to take the keys home, hoping to find the owner in other ways.

Grow your social network. If you feel you don't have enough people in your life to whom you're connected, you can take active steps to make more relationships to bring more people in your life.Go to parties, community gatherings, and local events where you can meet new people. You never know who you might meet or what chances might appear from these interactions.

Strengthen existing relationships. What if you have enough people in your life but you don't feel connected enough to them or you still have let your friendships go? It is always the fact that people who take small actions, day to day, to stay in touch and to connect with people are the ones who keep their relationships strong.

Accept change. People change all the time, and it means relationships are changing, too.The question is, whether we can notice how we're changing and how the other person is changing and accept that change and maybe even celebrate and support that change rather than push against it.

Good communication with others helps you better build and maintain relationships with them, having a positive effect on you by increasing your sense of happiness. Try to listen actively, express yourself clearly, and learn to give and receive useful feedback. All those practices will help you connect with a diverse range of people and enrich your social interactions.

Their aim is to develop what they call the"new virtual (虚拟的) worlds" of music. Andrea Martonelli and Max Graf are among more than 30 doctoral students working with Mathieu Barthet, a senior lecturer in Digital Media. They are exploring the possibilities of computational creativity and generative AI to build these virtual worlds. Generative AI is a term that describes technology tools designed to operate at human levels. Together, the researchers have set up a future studio where music meets most advanced technology.

Martonelli played a HITar, a guitar with AI sensors (传感器) added to it. The sensors can read his movements to create drum-like sounds that accompany(伴随) the guitar music. These sounds cannot be made with a normal guitar. Generative AI grew in popularity last year thanks to a robotic language system. Generative AI can create new sounds, words for music or entire songs on its own. But artists usually use simpler AI to add to their sounds.

Musicians worry that the technology could go too far. Amy plays in an English rock group. She said she is not in support of the music that includes artificially made voices of actual artists. She said she felt the same way about using dead artists' voices in songs. In November, the rock group released a song. It is considered the group's last song and includesa musician's voice, who died in 1980. His sounds were taken from an old recording and recreated with AI.

A famous singer said, "I think AI can have its place in the music production chain." But he added, "This is only possible if the technology is guided in the right way and if there are rules in place to make sure that musicians keep some amount of control."

(1)、What are the doctoral students working on?
A、The history of traditional music. B、The influence of AI on human creativity. C、The development of musical instruments. D、The creation of virtual music environments.
(2)、What is the function of the sensors added to the HI Tar?
A、To provide backing music. B、To control the language system. C、To monitor the guitarist's movements. D、To improve the singer's voice qualities.
(3)、What is Amy's attitude to the music made by AI?
    A、Curious. B、Unfavorable. C、Uncaring. D、Thankful.
(4)、What does the famous singer in the last paragraph say about AI?
A、It is a possible way to make music rules. B、It should be stopped in music production. C、It should be used wisely for creating music. D、It is the only way to make dead artists' voices alive.

But the report warns it could get worse between 25 and 75 years from now if nothing is done soon. Developed countries such as Germany, the United States and France would face smaller decreases. The researchers foresaw that people living in those countries would see 11 to 13 percent less income. The greatest economic effect will be felt by people in the least-developed nations.

The researchers first estimated (估算) what the world's economic growth would be without climate change. They then applied those values to the damage to economies if climate change continues at its present pace. There will still be economic growth, but it will be 19 percent lower in most places once the damage of climate change is taken into consideration.

Most at the research group have been centering on extreme weather events such as heat waves, floods, typhoons, hurricanes and other large storms. However, the effects are still mainly driven by average warming or overall temperature increases. The average world temperature last year was a record. That number was 1.35 ℃ above the average during pre-industrial times, before modern technology.

In the US, the southeastern and southwestern states such as New Mexico and Arizona are estimated to suffer the largest economic effects. In Europe, Spain and Italy are likely to feel the effects more than countries like Denmark and Germany. Areas that are usually cold for most of the year — Canada, Russia, Norway, Finland, and Sweden — will have good results from warming.

Experts note that the world's poorest countries are also the least prepared to adapt to climate change. Those countries are least responsible for the change, but they will agonize 60 percent more income loss than wealthy nations.

(1)、What does the new study mainly show?
A、The causes of climate change. B、The process of climate change. C、The economic losses caused by climate change. D、The health problems caused by climate change.
(2)、What have most of the researchers been focusing on?
    A、Application value. B、Temperature decreases. C、Modern technology. D、Natural disasters.
(3)、Why is Canada less affected by climate change?
A、It has a large area. B、It has cold weather. C、It is underdeveloped. D、It has a small population.
(4)、What does the underlined word "agonize" in the last paragraph mean?
    A、Research. B、Suffer. C、Avoid. D、Reduce.
