3、In the video game Space Invaders Extreme 2, a player has to fire weapons to destroy aliens (外星人) attacking Earth. These aliens move fast, raining down from the top of the screen and claiming a player's "life" if they reach the bottom.
A study in Nature suggests that while destroying digital aliens might seem unrelated to distinguishing between words, such action video games may help children at risk for developmental dyslexia—a genetic (遗传的, 基因的) language disorder that makes processing words difficult—by improving their ability to perceive spoken words and sounds.
In the study, 79 prereading children with family histories of dyslexia took several language tests, including listening for differences in made-up words—a task that can be challenging for dyslexic people. The kids were then split into four groups. One played Space Invaders Extreme 2, a second played a non-action video game, a third attended speech therapy (疗法), and a fourth received no intervention. Gamers played four times a week for 45 minutes each over a month and a half, and those in speech therapy attended 45-minute sessions twice weekly over about four months.
By the end of the trial more than 80 percent of the Space Invaders players were significantly better at the word-identification task than before, and they showed greater improvements than any of the other three groups. The researchers aren't sure why scores on the other language tests did not improve notably—but they say that this finding could be valuable. "If we can target these small cognitive (认知的) functions before children are older and lose some brain plasticity, then perhaps we can treat aspects of dyslexia before they've fully formed, " says Simone Gori, co-author of the study.
Dyslexia often goes untreated in Italy's overburdened public health and school systems, says Marilu Tempini, a behavioral neurologist at the University of California. She hopes to see larger future studies conducted in other languages as well. "Eyes are an extension of the brain, " she says, "so when we play video games, it's directly connected to our cognitive function—and there is so much research potential there. "
(1)、The author describes Space Invaders Extreme 2 in paragraph 1 to show the game is ________.A、violent B、skill-based C、action-packed D、entertaining(2)、According to Simone Gori, what is the significance of the finding?A、It proves that children with dyslexia can be cured. B、It offers hope that the public health system in Italy will be improved. C、It suggests that video games can replace the traditional speech therapy. D、It indicates that action video games can be used for early intervention of dyslexia.(3)、What is Marilu Tempini's attitude towards the study?A、Doubtful. B、Favorable. C、Dismissive. D、Conserved.(4)、Which of the following might be a suitable title for the text?A、Secrets Behind Dyslexia Revealed B、Action Video Games Advance Word Awareness C、The Most Effective Coping Strategy for Dyslexia D、Video Games Designed to Improve Cognitive Function -

8、Tao Yuanming and Henry David Thoreau were both poets, but one lived in Ancient China and the other in 19th century America. Superficially, these two men, whose lives were separated in time by nearly 1,500 years, were polar opposites. And yet they shared an intense respect for nature, which made them each an influential figure of their time.
Both men made dramatic transformations to their lives in order to reconnect with nature. As an official in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Tao felt conflicted over life at court. In 405, he quit the service of the court for good, expressing his unhappiness in the now famous line that he would not "bow like a servant in return for five dou of grain". He spent the next 22 years until his death, working the land in a poor, rural area.
While Tao's return to nature was a reaction to a lifestyle he was opposed to, Thoreau's was a personal decision to transform the way he lived. He had a decent quality of life, but he wanted to live in a simpler way. For two years, two months and two days, he lived in a cottage in the forest on the edge of Walden Pond, focusing on himself and his writing. He explained his reason for doing so in Walden: "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life." Both men were happy to withdraw from contemporary life, seeking a harmonious relationship with nature in the quietness of their lives.
Although Tao and Thoreau do not treat nature in quite the same way, their works show its beauty and value. Tao's nature is a place of fields and villages, in other words, rural, and his animals are domestic ones, such as chickens and dogs. The calm and peaceful life he wrote about is in contrast to and critical of the depressive court life.
Beyond the dark and distance lies a village,
the smoke above reluctant to depart.
A dog is barking somewhere down the lane.
and chickens sit atop the mulberry tree.
Thoreau's descriptions of nature emphasized the beauty and purity of the wild areas around him. Devoting himself to observations of the natural phenomena, he recorded his detailed findings in his journals. Thoreau's writing aimed to convince people that animals and plants had a right to live and prosper, as we do. We should live with them in harmony and enjoy nature's gifts, as he describes in his journal:
Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each. Let them be your only diet, drink and botanical medicines.
It takes considerable courage to reject the easy and familiar and instead try to live closer to nature, as both Tao and Thoreau did. Their choices led them to quiet and reflective lives with fewer material desires.
(1)、What does the underlined words "polar opposite" in paragraph 1 mean?A、Rather similar. B、Far away from the polar area. C、Reasonably familiar. D、Contrastingly different.(2)、What can we learn from paragraphs 2 and 3?A、Tao's decision of returning to nature was a reaction to a lifestyle to which he opposed, whereas Thoreau's was not. B、Thoreau was unhappy with his life at court, but Tao was not. C、Tao sought for a harmonious relationship with nature, while Thoreau did not. D、Both Tao and Thoreau chose to live in a lakeside cottage in the forest, living in simplicity.(3)、Why does the author quote Thoreau's journal?A、To illustrate Thoreau's ideal of people living in harmony with nature. B、To prove Thoreau's love for nature and how he insisted on protecting it. C、To show Thoreau's description of nature is beautiful and pure. D、To suggest that Thoreau's understanding of nature was inspired by animals and plants.(4)、What is the author's attitude towards Tao and Thoreau's lifestyle?A、Dismissive. B、Doubtful. C、Supportive D、Pessimistic. -
9、On 1 April 1977, second-hand bookshop owner Richard Booth put on a homemade crown, marched through the streets of Hay-on-Wye and declared himself "King of Hay" outside the gates of the Welsh town's castle.
Holding a scepter (权杖), Booth told confused locals and press that he made himself a "king" to encourage tourism and reviving the town's declining economy. Booth issued passports, stamps and currency for his new "nation". He would also later made his horse Goldie "prime minister" after a few too many drinks in the local pub. His fans and supporters would be awarded citizenship, and he would rule his self-declared kingdom until his death in 2019.
The bookseller's bold move for independence saved the town. "A lot of small towns were in decline at the time," explained Dr. Reg Clark, who worked for Booth in the 1970s. "People in rural areas would get an education, but then they would move out and get jobs elsewhere." Booth's marketing strategy changed everything. With a population of just 1,500, the town remains home to some 20-plus bookshops and hosts the United Kingdom's largest literary event, the annual Hay Festival.
In the middle of the Hay Festival, festival goers can taste local street food from pop-up food stands and market stalls in the surrounding street. However, it is the books that always keep visitors stand in line. The second-hand bookshops, antique stores and a fascinating map shop lining the main street are among the top choices for festivalgoers.
However, before Booth opened Hay-on-Wye's first bookstore in 1962, there was hardly any interest in books. By 1976 Hay-on-Wye had become known as the world's first "Town of Books" as bookshops sprang up on every street comer. Despite the harsh economic reality, Booth never quit his chosen career path. By announcing himself a king, Booth attracted publicity as crowds gathered to visit the strange "Town of Books" ruled by a king. Interestingly, the Hay festival was not the creation of Booth. In 1988, Booth even picked a fight with the just-founded Hay Festival, blaming the festival for focusing only on newly published books, thus damaging the local second-hand bookshops.
Booth passed away on 20 August 2019, but the "King of Hay" continues. Booth's real legacy isn't a flag or even a kingdom, but a lively, book-loving town. "As his friend, I knew that Richard loved Hay and he wanted the best for it. Not because it was his kingdom, but because he loved the community," said Clark.
(1)、Which of the following best describes Richard Booth?A、Passionate and patient. B、Sharp-minded but eccentric. C、Kind-hearted but pessimistic. D、Easygoing and brave.(2)、Why did Richard Booth declare himself a king?A、It was his desire to rule "Town of Books" as a king. B、He was desperate for attention and publicity to save his own bookstore. C、He was determined to bring the town out of an economic decline. D、He was trying to pick a fight with a new book festival to help secondhand bookshops.(3)、What can we learn about the Hay Festival?A、It was founded by the "king" of Hay-on-Wye to attract tourists. B、Books are the sole focus of the festival and visitors can experience nothing else. C、It is a popular book festival held on yearly basis. D、It was criticized by visitors for damaging the interest of second-hand bookshops.(4)、What can we learn from paragraph 5?A、Booth's book business was smooth sailing ever since he started it. B、The town became famous before Hay festival was created. C、Booth's book shop had no competition until it was threatened by the Hay festival. D、Booth was loved by his fans, who were awarded citizenship of his kingdom. -
10、We've seen the images of destruction, ruins and flooding left behind from Hurricane Helene. But other images also came out of the storm: family photos. After the deadly hurricane in October, Taylor Schenker found herself with about 200 family photos that didn't belong to her.
It started after the storm. Schenker's house weathered Helene well, but she said her friend's entire home was destroyed by flood. Schenker and her friend went for walk to check out the home, which was one of the many local homes that was destroyed.
"We spent about four hours digging through the ruins, looking for my friend's belongings," Schenker told CBS News last month. "And during the search, I found five photographs. We laid out the photos along the river bank, hoping they would be reunited with their owners."
Schenker later uploaded the photos online. She said she found about 100 photos herself, but picked up about another 100 from others who found them, including search and rescue teams. To date, she has reunited around 15% of the photos with their owners. She still adds new photos to Instagram daily.
Each reunion is a heartwarming reminder that what she's doing is important. "I'm grateful for being able to do this. When you hand something so special to somebody and then give them a hug — it's such a privilege," she said.
Schenker mails photos to people who are no longer in the area, but she also hand delivers the ones that belong to families who stayed close by. In one case, a college-aged son found his family's photos on her Instagram, reached out to Schenker and connected her with his mom.
"We have now found five photos of this one family, of these two sons, and when I met with the mom to reunite the photos, she shared that one of her sons had actually passed," Schenker said. "And so, when they lost their home, they lost all memory of this child, which is absolutely devastating in addition to the disaster that has already happened." She said she recently went for another so-called photo walk — where she dug through ruins to find images — and recognized the woman's late son in yet another photo.
(1)、What do we know about Taylor Schenker?A、Her home was destroyed by hurricane Helene. B、She looked for missing photos for a living. C、She helped many hurricane survivors by collecting photos. D、She was known for reuniting people with their missing families.(2)、What does the underlined word ones in paragraph 6 refer to?A、Families. B、Photos. C、Mails. D、Lives.(3)、The author proves the importance of Schenker's efforts by all the following EXCEPT ________.A、making comparisons B、providing data C、quoting comments D、giving examples(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、Families reunited on social media B、Looking into the ruins for hope C、Hurricane torn down millions of homes D、A special reunion after the storm -

12、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was never a question whether or not my mother loved me — it was a given, the cornerstone of my life that shaped everything about who I was.
However, I'm not sure about my father's love. There are photographs of us laughing together, with me in diapers when I was a baby. I've watched recordings of my older sister and me lining up in turns for my father to hold and toss us into the air — all three of us shrieking (尖叫) with delight.
Did I love him then?
I feel I must have loved him because the film says so — the infant child is laughing, and she is embracing the man beside her. When I turn off the tape to search my own childhood for proof of my father's love, and proof that we shared something like love, there is one impressive memory I can name.
At some point during my first year of school, I peed (尿湿了) my pants in class. I was sent to the school nurse for a change of clothes, and for the rest of the day, I wore a pair of over-large, bright orange sweat pants. I remember exactly how the teacher looked at me and exactly what the other students said, but they were the least of my worries.
I was in terror at the thought of showing up at home with different pants.
All afternoon I planned how I would enter the house very quietly and run to my room before my father even noticed I was there. During the entire bus ride home I rehearsed (默默练习) again and again the plan I had in mind that would allow me to escape my father's wrath (盛怒) and his triangle eyes.
Triangle eyes. This was the name my sister Shira and I used to use whenever my father's eyes would tense up into two hard triangles, with the calm of his face having fled away in a flash of anger. Their appearance was sudden and unpredictable, ignited by a poor exam score from Shira, or when I burnt the bread in the toaster. He'd point out the door and yell, "Get out!"
Who knew what peeing pants in class would get you.

16、Steve Jobs was undoubtedly a creative person. His innovative ideas have given us many digital devices, without which we cannot seem to function very effectively anymore. There are indeed many things we can learn from Jobs on how to be creative. Here are several of them.
Curiosity
But somewhere along the way, we tend to lose or dismiss that nature of ours. Curiosity is the seed of creativity. It questions limiting beliefs and long-held assumptions. Meanwhile it also asks, why? Or why not?
Jony Ive, Apple's Chief Design Officer, wrote about Jobs' curiosity in the Wall Street Journal: His insatiable curiosity was not limited or distracted by his knowledge or expertise, nor was it casual or passive. His curiosity was practiced with intention and rigor.
Openness to New Experiences
Only when we are open to new experience can we explore the world, and ourselves better. Jobs was also the one who was certainly eager to explore new areas of study. He took a course in calligraphy while he was in the university, despite knowing that the class would not earn him any credit towards a degree. This later helped him a lot, bringing creativity into his world of technology.
Mindfulness & Meditation
Jobs used mindfulness and meditation to reduce his stress, gain more clarity, and enhance his creativity. Biographer Walter Isaacson quotes Jobs as saying: " Only when it calms, there's room to hear more subtle things. And that's when your intuition starts to blossom. Also you start to see things more clearly. Your mind just slows down, and you see a tremendous expanses in the moment. You see so much more than you could see before."
We only have to tweak our habits so that we can ignite the creativity within us.
A. It is not that tough to be creative.
B. It was intense, energetic and restless.
C. We are blessed with the gift after we are well educated.
D. Sit and meditate, and you will find something enlightening.
E. Sit and observe, and you will see how restless your mind is.
F. We are all born with the gift (just observe babies and toddlers).
G. It is a drive to explore novel ideas, or discover and learn unlearned skills.

17、Does AI have dementia, a serious mental disorder? Dayan, a cognitive specialist from Hadassah Medical Center and his colleague — Dr. Benjamin, a neurologist, and Gal, a data scientist at London-based Quantum Black Analytics, administered the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, or MoCA, to five leadingllMs (ChatGPT-4, ERGPT-40, Claude, Gemini 1 and Gemini1.5). This assesses cognitive impairment (认知缺陷) by giving "patients" a variety of simple tasks. For example, copy the drawing of a cube. Give as many words as you can that begin with the letter "F." Subtract seven from 100 until you reach zero.
To Dayan's surprise, none of the models obtained the full score of 30 points. Most scored between 18 and 25, indicating mild cognitive impairment associated with early dementia. Every model outperformed the average person in attention and memory-related tasks but faltered on visual and spatial tasks, such as those that asked them to draw or orient themselves in the universe.
Researchers also showed the chat-bots the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination "cookie theft" picture, of a boy standing on a bench to steal cookies as his mother washes dishes. "Patients" describe it while analysts assess their speech and language function. All models correctly interpreted parts of the image, the study found, but none expressed concern that the boy was about to fall. This lack of empathy is commonly associated with front-to-temporal dementia, the study authors said. Notably, older models performed worse on the MoCA than newer versions. The authors drew a resemblance (相似点) between "dementia" risk in aging AI and in human brains.
This December 2024 study was carried out for the Christmas edition of The BMJ — one of the world's most medical journals, subjecting all articles to a thorough peer review process. In some way, the study was written more "tongue-in-cheek". Methodologically, llMs should not be examined by methods meant for people. However, the results may spark conversations about the differences between AI and human doctors — and the important roles both can play.
(1)、What can be inferred about the AI models' performance on visual and spatial tasks?A、They performed better than humans on these tasks. B、They struggled more on these tasks compared to memory-related tasks. C、They showed no difference in performance across all tasks. D、They were unable to complete any visual or spatial tasks.(2)、What did the researchers do to carry out the study in paragraph 3?A、They assessed the computing ability of the AI models. B、They tracked how the AI models processed the picture. C、They measured the AI models' scores of series of tests. D、They analyzed the AI models' ability of interpreting the picture.(3)、How does the passage develop?A、It presents a problem, describes a study, and then discusses the results. B、It compares different AI models and their development over time. C、It develops by making comparisons between AI models and humans. Wild Concerto, released on 18 April, is a "cooperation between nature and music". A croaking frog, a black-footed albatross (信天翁), and a red deer will "perform" with Copeland, alongside 30musicians from the Kingdom Orchestra. Copeland said none of the natural recordings had been manipulated or returned. "All the bird and animal sounds are exactly as they were, but I put them in positions so that they add up to a melody and rhythm," he said. "Their voices bring an super authenticity to the music. They all have their own individual melodies but when you put an instrument in, everything is more amazing."
Wild Concerto is inspired by the arctic tern's migration from pole to pole, and creatures possibly encountered along the way. Copeland said there was a conservationist theme to the work. "Many of these species are endangered and their sounds could vanish in our lifetime. Through the Wild Concerto, their voices will be kept immortalized."
For six decades, he has captured sounds of the natural world, from rain-forests to deserts — recordings heard in natural history series such as Our Oceans and Blue Planet as well as about 150films. With a document of almost 100,000 recordings he has been called "the David Attenborough of sound". Copeland is a brilliant talent. He's combined natural sounds and music seamlessly. This is another way for people to listen to nature.
He hopes the album will raise awareness of creatures that are by noise pollution that their sounds cannot be captured cleanly: "Two-thirds of the species in my library are now basically extinct. Twenty-five or 30 years ago, when I wanted to record one hour of primitive sound, it took about three or four hours to do that with minimal editing, compared to 2,000 recording hours today, because there are so many man-made sounds in the environment..."

19、The rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee filled the air inside a quaint stone cabin in the eastern Chinese village that houses Frank Sterzer's café: Bamboo Coffee Roasters.
After more than 20 years as an engineer and executive with leading automobile companies in Germany and China, Frank has found a new calling and fulfillment in the village of Maoli near Ningbo in Zhejiang province. Inspired by his lifelong love of coffee, a passion for roasting beans prompted Frank to turn what had been a hobby into a thriving business. "Zhejiang's countryside has excellent infrastructure and beautiful landscapes, and I find it the ideal place to start my business," Frank says. Maoli is located less than a 30-minute drive from the Ningbo city center, striking a pleasing balance between urban convenience and rural tranquility.
For Frank, the experience of sipping a cup of coffee while enjoying a slice of handmade cake and gazing at the countryside, captures the type of serene lifestyle he hopes to share with visitors. "Bamboo Coffee Roasters is a place to share the charm of this mountain village with visitors from all over the world," he explains.
The café is named after the abundance of bamboo around Maoli, while its logo was inspired by a photograph Frank took of a nearby bamboo forest. He has also created a small coffee factory behind the shop front, where excellent beans from around the world are neatly stacked next to gently humming roasting machines. He roasts 10 metric tons a year. All these have become key components of the café's success.
Since opening in June 2024, Bamboo Coffee Roasters has quickly become a popular destination, attracting visitors from near and far including international travelers taking advantage of China's expanded visa-free policies. Frank's own family took advantage of this policy, with his mother and siblings visiting last year.
Before the Spring Festival, the café was welcoming guests from allover, including nearby cities like Hangzhou and Shanghai.
