Do you want to make a difference to animals' lives? Become a volunteer at Irving Animal Services (IAS). IAS wants volunteers to give animals care and a second chance to feel being loved. Here are some volunteer jobs. 

OPPORTUNITIES

Adoption Host: Helps the public at the shelter and off-site locations with questions, and helps facilitate(推动) introductions between possible adopters (收养人) and animals. 

Animal Care: Helps staff with daily routines, such as cleaning animal houses, and preparing meet and greet rooms. Volunteers also work to socialize animals by reading to them, petting them or playing with them. Sometimes volunteers will perform bath services for animals. 

Supply Team: Helps provide supplies based on basic daily needs for all of the animals. This is very important for the health and well-being of the animals. 

Photographer: Photographs animals for adoption promotion and record keeping. 

REQUIREMENTS

Volunteer applicants must be at least 18 years old and love animals. There is no cost to volunteers and no minimum (最少的) hours required. Interested people must hand in an application to the Volunteer Program.

9 am to 6 pm, Tuesday-Friday

8 am to 5 pm, Saturday-Monday

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself,  "Why would anyone bring home all his books on Friday? He must really be a nerd(书呆子). "

I had quite a lot of plans on weekends, like parties and football games with my friends, so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw him fall down and his glasses go flying, with all the books landing on the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.

My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, he looked at me and said,  "Hey, thanks! " There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so we walked home together, talking all the way, and I carried half of his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. We hung out all weekend, and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. As we would graduate soon, Kyle was valedictorian (致告别辞学生代表) of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.

There was a wise man Sviatozar. One day his nephew came to visit him. The young man was sad and 1  with something. He said that he suffered a serious setback which made him lose2 .

Everyone has some bad habits that they would like to break free from. They can endanger a person—both mentally and physically. Bad habits act as barriers that prevent a person from making any progress in life. For most of us, these habits are so deep-rooted that it becomes hard to even notice them. 

Get Proper Help

A lot of times, people who are suffering from bad habits like to deal with everything themselves. Besides, there are a lot of professional doctors that can offer their support, too. For example, if you are suffering from mental problems, you can get help from ARC Recovery Center (康复中心).These centers can help people recover at a faster and better rate. 

To get rid of a bad habit, replace it with something else. If you watch too much television, you can replace it with reading a book or exercising. It can also be a time to start something you've been planning to do for so long. , or you can take a holiday that you have been desperately wanting. Anything that offers a change in schedule can be very beneficial for you. 

Set Goals for Future

. Whatever the habit you are looking to get rid of, you should imagine how better your life would become when you solve it. Think of all the mistakes you have made, relationships that turned sideways, or all the opportunities you failed to seize just because of your bad habits. By setting goals for the future, you can inspire yourself and adopt a lifestyle that helps you achieve those goals.

At the end of many sports tournaments and spelling bees, all the contestants are honored for their effort. But in a world where not everyone can be a winner, does getting a consolation (安慰) prize actually increase a child's self⁃worth?

 "When toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners compete, they don't know the expectations adults have for them, " says Emily Pagone, an Illinois⁃based psychologist and parenting coach.  "Offering them a prize or medal as a form of positive reinforcement (正强化) can highlight the skills that the losers displayed and reinforce the sportsmanship that all the players displayed. " 

But what really makes a participation award worthwhile is the conversation that comes with it.  "As the caregivers around the children acknowledge their abilities, talents, and strengths, that's the compass for how children learn about the expectations of the situation, " Pagone says. Pointing out what kids do well can also build their self⁃confidence. 

Still, there is one problem with this system: It creates a feedback loop of external motivation, driven by superficial bonus and praise. However, it's valuable for students to play soccer not only because they're seeking tokens to decorate their rooms, but also because they enjoy the sport. They won't always get prizes for doing their best, so it's crucial to build an inner desire to push through in challenging times. 

For this reason, Pagone recommends transitioning away from participation awards around kindergarten or first grade. But not all experts agree that's best.  "Positive reinforcement can also benefit older kids and adults, keeping them coming back to their hobby even after a tough practice or season, " says Kelly LaPorte, clinical director of Naperville Counseling Center in Illinois.  "That lesson of celebrating the effort and not just the outcome remains important throughout a person's life. " 

You've probably felt it at some point in life: a red face, a huge heart, and a coating of sweat on your palms. That intense feeling, also known as an adrenaline (肾上腺素) rush, is caused by stress, nervousness, or excitement. 

What happens to the body in any of those scenes is the same.  "The special phenomenon begins in organs called adrenal glands(肾上腺). They secrete (分泌) the hormone adrenaline, preparing your body to take action ", says Alan Goodman,a professor of biological anthropology (人类学) at Hampshire College in Massachusetts.  "The chemical helps you respond in high⁃risk situations—and even to fight or flee. " 

In fact, as soon as your brain senses danger, it tells your body to start making adrenaline. The hormone floods into your bloodstream and jumps into action by connecting to adrenoceptors, which can be found in cells in almost every organ.When a large amount of the chemical is produced all at once—more than 10 times higher than when you're calm—it's called an adrenaline rush. 

That flood has lots of noticeable effects, and each one is intended to protect you in a dangerous situation. Your pupils might widen to let more light into your eyes so you can see more of your surroundings. Your brain begins to work faster to draw up a plan. Your heart beats more rapidly and pumps extra blood to your muscles, also delivering a surge of oxygen from your lungs. All of these effects build up anxious feelings. That's why it might seem as if your head is spinning, your thoughts are racing, or your heart is beating out of your chest. 

While for many a chef, serving up the fanciest and most delicious meals is the final aim, Rudolf Brand has an extra mission: fighting food waste. He believes that with his dishes, he can have a big impact: not just on people's taste buds (味蕾), but also on their way of thinking about food and food waste. 

With 22 years of experience, including Michelin⁃starred restaurants in London and Amsterdam,he has seen a lot of food wasted in his career.So what is the best way to prevent this? For him,it really comes down to one essential thing:  "Rather than thinking about what new meals you want to cook,look at the remnants—what's available,and then make a menu.This is what every chef should do. " 

He's clear on his solution:  "Lose that fanciness, and look at the quality of the product and the flavor, " Rudolf explains. "There are too many chefs who are trying to be too fancy.They want to have only the biggest sea fish no matter what.Or they make a dish with only the heart of the cabbage,only using the most delicate leaves and then they throw away the rest. " He shakes his head at the idea of such waste. 

He knows that one of his suppliers—a local farm—is left with a growing food mountain when top Michelin⁃starred chefs only buy the prized cuts of meat instead of ordering the entire leg.In just three or four weeks,the farm is left with 1,000 legs of lamb in the freezer. "And that's just one supplier, " he says. 

While other chefs will only accept the best from their suppliers,if something is smaller or damaged or has a few black bits,Rudolf is still going to use it. "Just because I'll accept produce of slightly lower quality it doesn't mean I'm going to serve less quality.It's my job to turn that into good⁃quality food on the plate, " he says.

●Qualified teachers or trainee teachers of any subject at any level, although we will also consider applications who have been educated to degree level. 

●From 23 years old with a minimum of one year's voluntary work experience.

Kapanda Community Day Secondary School

●A 30⁃minute bicycle ride from Mwaya Beach;

●Four school years,referred to as Forms 1 to 4;

●Typical ages are 14 to 19 years;

●Each class has about 50 students with its own classroom;

●All subjects are taught in English. 

Mwaya Primary School

Primary schools in Malawi are free and open to all.As secondary education is highly competitive and relatively expensive, this is often the only education rural Malawians receive. 

●A 10⁃minute walk from Mwaya Beach;

●About 1,200 pupils;

●Eight school years, referred to as Standards 1 to 8;

●Typical ages are 5 to 15 years;

●Class sizes vary from 100 to 150;

●Lessons are taught in English from Standard 5 upwards, which can be difficult for volunteers with students who are just learning to speak,write and understand English. 

※Please note that volunteers are not there to replace or take the jobs of Malawian teachers and give lessons, but they are there to assist the current teachers and students.
