Recently, I had the unexpected pleasure of witnessing a basketball game played by local villagers in Guizhou province. Similarly, in the VBA game, the winning team received modest prizes like live ducks and cooked meat, showcasing the genuine and down-to-earth nature of the competition. I even wondered if the players were cooks or farmers who could prepare the food right off the court. 

The sudden popularity of the VBA can originate from the pervasive influence of social media and people's desire to explore something different from their immediate surroundings. However, what truly resonates (共鸣) and has the potential for further growth is the pursuit (追求) of spiritual fulfillment. Grassroots sports offer an accessible and fulfilling experience, making them an ideal destination for individuals seeking a deeper connection.

Travel has become increasingly inconvenient and sometimes impossible over the last couple of years. However, museums around the world are digitizing their collections, enabling people to tour the museums from afar. 

The British Museum, London

The British Museum contains objects from around the world, including the Rosetta Stone, with three versions of a text that helped researchers learn to read ancient Egyptian. The Great Court's ceiling, in the middle of the museum, is composed of 3212 pieces of glass, none of which are alike. My three children played peacefully in the back yard. This alone should have put me on alert , but the setting was so pleasant that I hung our clothes to dry in the soft breeze and enjoyed the unseasonably warm September afternoon. Our home was nestled in a forest of the Northern California foothills, facing a shining lake, with just a few neighbors

As I wasn't in the habit of leaving my children unattended, I returned quickly to my clothesline duty. Just then, I noticed that Jessie had moved away from where she was lying. I exclaimed angrily, That dog! She's off again, and we don't need any more puppies! Looking around for her but failing to find her, I continued my laundry responsibilities, took a quick survey of the kids and saw, to my horror, that Philippe was missing. To my knowledge, no car and no passers-by had passed the usual paths close to our home. I began to yell his name, trying to stay calm.

I'll always remember the first time I tried ballet. My mother was a 1 and I wanted nothing more than to be like her, but after 2 during my first class, I felt like I wanted to quit right away.

Most of us are familiar with carrots.  They are a cool-season crop that can tolerate low temperatures. 

 Firstly we should ensure that the soil used for deep-rooted types is free of stones. Mix the soil with organic matter, especially during the fall season before sowing. 

Then we should choose a variety of carrots after the soil is prepared. The early ones are usually small, slender and are eaten while they are young; the main crop types are larger and are eaten fresh or stored. 

Early types should be sown in spring as soon as the soil is workable. They may also be sown under covers, though the covers should be removed after a few weeks. Carrot seeds can be sown about 1/2 inch deep. Early carrots should be thinned to 3 inches apart; main crop carrots should be thinned to 1. 5 inches. 

Weeds should be removed regularly once the carrots have germinated. Watering is needed every two to three weeks. Watch out for pests and diseases.  Protect against carrot rust flies by surrounding the patch of young carrots with a protective barrier 2 to 3 feet high. Use either fine netting or plastic as barriers. 

Early carrots can be harvested about seven to nine weeks after sowing and main crop carrots should be harvested after ten to eleven weeks.

My neighbour Orlando is a paramedic (护理人员). He and his wife are some of the nicest people I have ever met. A few years back we started this sort of "favor war", where one of us would do something for the other, such as shoveling (铲) his driveway or helping him build a shed, and next time the other would try to top it with another favor.

Yesterday morning there was maybe 2 or 3 feet of snow on the ground and I remembered he shoveled my driveway for me last snowfall. So I took out my shovel and took care of both our sidewalks and driveways because it was my turn to do a favor back. It took a while but I finished and got into my car for work. What I did not realize was that Orlando had to work that day too. 

Fast forward to this morning I got a knock on my door. It was him. He immediately shook my hand and informed me that because I shoveled his driveway and sidewalk for him, he was able to get to work earlier. As soon as he started his shift, a call came through that a young boy was in a medical emergency. Luckily he and his partner were only about 2 minutes away, but the next closest ambulance was in 10 minutes. This kid didn't have 10 minutes. He barely had 2 minutes. Because my neighbour got to work sooner, the young boy got to live his life.

This isn't a brag (吹嘘). This is to inform others that even the smallest favors can have the biggest impacts. It wasn't too much of trouble to shovel his driveway for him, but because I did, the young kid got to see his family again, go back to school again, talk to his friends again and live his life.

Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur(创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids' teeth, instead of destroying them.

She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.

Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore's product—CanCandy.

As CanCandy's success grows, so does Moore's credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she's also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.

Meanwhile, with her parents' help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn't driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy's profits to Big Smiles. Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning,people may send the wrong signal(信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship. 

Different cultures emphasize(强调)the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example,business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work,it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk",usually over a glass of tea,before they do any job. In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafés rather than at the office.

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion;instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better,I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture,we express meaning mainly through words,but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary. 

Even within Northern Europe,cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values;however,Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact,this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly. 

People from different parts of the world have different values,and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However,if we can understand them better,a multicultural environment(多元文化环境)will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

Rizia Bardhan

Rizia Bardhan is 29 and a post doctor at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Her research mainly deals with amazing possibilities of micro robots that can be used to cure diseases which are now untreatable. In an interview, she said that when she thought of science, she would think of major problems that she could help to solve. 

Heather Knight

Heather Knight, the 28-year-old Chief Executive of the Marilyn Monrobot company, is performing new applications for robotics by casting her shows with robots. She considers humor to be one of the most important human features. Therefore, if she can teach humor to robots, they will be able to better connect with humans. 

Imre Bartos

Imre Bartos is a 29-year-old Columbia University graduate student. As one of the young minds, he is remarkable enough to drive others crazy with envy. He studies everything from the formation of black holes to the physics of how mosquito eyes see the world. In the paper Hunting Black Holes with a Gas Cloud, he explains that a gas cloud meeting a black hole in its path will be partially eaten by the black hole. His task is to check the X-rays that are given off during the process.

Jeremy England is a 36-year-old professor at MIT, a school that is known for its young genius. He is working right now on new ideas about the physics behind basic biology. He says that he wants to make sense of life at the molecular(分子) level.

Researchers concerned with space exploration say they have discovered new evidence that Mars once had a large northern ocean. The discovery adds to existing evidence that the ancient Mars had the right conditions to possibly support some form of life.

Today, any water on Mars is believed to be in the form of ice because of the planet's extremely cold desert temperatures. But there is a rich amount of evidence suggesting that rivers, lakes and even oceans once existed on Mars. A study by the American space agency NASA suggested that billions of years ago, Mars likely had an ocean that covered nearly half of Mars' northern hemisphere(半球). Another NASA-supported study estimated that about several billion years ago, the climate in much of the planet's northern hemisphere was very similar to today's Earth. The study noted that at that time, Mars likely had a much thicker atmosphere than today and had an active northern ocean.

Two American researchers recently released a set of maps to provide new environmental evidence of a large ancient ocean on Mars' low-lying northern hemisphere. The team collected data from satellite images and photos of Mars. They then combined them to create maps of the planet's northern hemisphere. Using the maps, the researchers were able to piece together evidence of shorelines that sat at the edge of a huge body of water about 3.5 billion years ago.

The researchers published their findings in the Journal of Geophysical Research：Planets. Benjamin Cardenas, a professor at The Penn State University, was a co-writer of the study. He said the study's findings showed the possible ocean in that area of Mars was changeable and interesting. "It was dynamic(动态). The sea level rose significantly," he said. "Rocks were being deposited(沉积) along its basins at a fast rate. There was a lot of change happening here." Besides, Cardenas suggested the new study also provided useful information on Mars' ancient climate and developmental history. "Based on these findings, we know there had to have been a period when it was warm enough and the atmosphere was thick enough to support this much liquid water at one time," he said.

The Masai(马赛人) are continually trying to keep their own ways in an increasingly modern world. They live along the border of Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, moving their homes from time to time to follow their cattle, the source of their livelihood. They rely on their cattle in many parts of their life. They like drinking the cows' milk.

They don't kill their cattle for food. But if a cow is killed the parts of its body are used to make containers, shoes, clothin, ropes, bed coverings and so on. Not all of the men have cows. The more cattle a man owns, the richer he is considered to be. A man who owns 50 or fewer cattle is considered poor. Rich men have a thousand or more. The cattle, though owned by the man, are considered to belong to the man's entire family. The family names the cattle and can recognize each animal's special voice.

The Masai men have become known as warriors(勇士), protecting their cattle against other wild animals. They wear their red long hair. Most women often take care of their children, cook food, clean clothes and make clothing at home. They also make necklaces dresses and headdresses. A few women can also become authorities once they are powerful enough. They speak a language called Maa.

The houses of Masai made from sticks and grass, which are held together with a mixture of mud, are not very firm or safe. These plain houses with some basic supplies are built in a circle and make up a Masai village. They are not meant to last long since the migration(迁徙) of the cow population means that the Masai move as well. In the meantime, in order to prevent animals from entering, they also form a wall of branches. The whole setup is to protect the cattle, which sleep at night in the middle of the village. They seem to live a natural and self-sufficient life but lack modern civilisation.

I believe that we can use social media for a lot of great things and it's important especially for business owners like me. Ever since I started my calligraphy business two years ago, I've never spent a day without going on social media, especially a kind of social app on my phone, on which I promoted my products and services and got in contact with possible customers. 

Later I found it got in the way of more important things. I hate to say I was hooked by it, but I was. Every time I turned on my phone, I would dive into it. For a long time, I had been I ignoring other parts of my life, like my family, my friends and my happiness. One day, I was thinking that a break should have happened long before to me. 

Then I decided to remove the app off my phone for a month and only use that on my computer to keep track of my business. I wanted a clean break to reflect and plan for the future. 

I had believed that if I spent less time on the platform, I would miss out much. Actually, I was so wrong. During this month off, I realized there was much to enjoy in life. I found more time to enjoy my hobbies and contacted my good friends that I had lost touch with, I was refilled with energy in all aspects of my life. 

This one month off the app on the phone was healthy for me. If it were not for my business, I would like not to have it on my phone. I downloaded the app again on my phone, but only used it to post my own content. I didn't intend to paint social media in a negative light, but now I just don't think the way I was using it was healthy. It's difficult to find balance, but I'm going to try to do it anyway. I'm going back, but it's going to be different.
