My husband and I were paying a visit  my parents in Tucson. We went to a fast-food restaurant for dinner together. My husband went to the counter(柜台)  (order) dishes and I stood with my parents.

I always knew that I depended too much on my phone. 1  I didn' t know how much, so I decided to do this 2  to find out. 

Every morning since I got a smart phone, I' ve used The Weather Forecast App to find out what to 3  . On the first morning I had to dress without guidance, but 4  I was able to guess that the day would be cold and foggy by looking out of my window. 

I couldn' t know what time it was. I haven' t worn a 5  for more than a year, because my phone 6  the time. So I was late for 7  riends who had been on the bus for two hours from Santa Monica to Palos Verdes. I was also 8  for my part-time job. And 9  , I couldn' t call people to tell them that I was running late. 

Getting places was harder, too. I got 10  because I couldn' t use the GPS on my phone. My driving, though, got a lot 11  because I no longer had my phone in one hand checking directions while 12  my car. 

But the number one trouble was not having my contact list. I forgot to write down my friends'  and family members'  phone numbers before I 13  the challenge. It was sad to realize that I couldn' t 14  my brother' s and my mum' s cell phone numbers. Oh, how I 15  to turn on the phone for just a second to look up phone numbers! 

Even with all the problems, however, I found 16  not worrying about missing a text message or an e-mail.

Successful students use different skills to study, which brings them more success.  

Here are the four skills almost all top-performing students use. 

They have clear goals. 

All top-performing students have clear, specific goals.  They motivate you and drive you to study more. But make sure that you do not get carried away. Set realistic goals which can challenge you, but do not seem impossible or too difficult to achieve. 

They are regular. 

Almost all successful students study regularly, because they know "what you give is what you get". If you put in regular hours of studying, then you will learn more and get better grades. This will help you to study regularly.

They study without pressure（压力）. 

Successful students study a lot. But they study without pushing themselves too much. Most students make the mistake of studying too hard or studying continuously for a long time.  Studying should be done in a balanced manner. Take a break for a few minutes, after studying for 30 or 45 minutes. Relax, walk around your house, or drink some water and return to studying. Such short breaks will refresh your brain and you will learn more effectively. 

Studying is not something you do just because your parents ask you to do it. It' s really very important for you. Studying gives you knowledge and ability that will remain with you for the rest of your life. It gives you the chance to get a job and earn money. And successful students recognize the value of studying well.

Malaria (疟疾) has been a deadly problem for humans since ancient times. Usually, people get malaria when infected mosquitoes (被感染的蚊子) bite them. Countless people have died from it. Thankfully, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou found an effective drug called qinghaosu (青蒿素). 

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tu' s discovery. In 1969, Tu became the director of a national project to develop a drug against malaria. Her team took a unique approach (方法). They went back to books about classical Chinese medicine. After reading more than 2, 000 old remedies (药方), Tu and her team collected over 600 plants and listed almost 380 possible remedies for malaria. 

One remedy (治疗法), which is 1, 600 years old, uses the sweet wormwood (青蒿) plant to treat malaria. Tu found it effective and tried to extract (提取) the qinghaosu from it in order to make drugs. The extraction failed at first, so Tu returned to the classical books again and finally found a way. She used a low-temperature method to extract the qinghaosu and succeeded in 1972. 

After her team showed that qinghaosu could treat malaria in mice and monkeys, Tu and two of her colleagues (同事) volunteered to test the drug on themselves before testing on human patients. It turned out that qinghaosu was safe. All patients in the tests recovered. Gradually, qinghaosu became the first-line treatment (治疗方案) for malaria recommended (推荐) by the World Health Organization (WHO), saving millions of lives around the world. 

In 2015, when Tu was awarded with the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, she refused to take all of the credit (荣誉). Instead, she praised her colleagues and Chinese traditional medicine. She once proudly said: "Every scientist dreams of doing something that can help the world. "

Anne woke up at 6: 00 am this morning because it was the first day of school. She went into the bathroom, looked in the mirror and she started to scream. Her little sister woke up and went to see what was wrong. Anne started to cry, "It's the first day of school and my hair is a mess! "

She rinsed out her mouth and went back in the living room. She glanced at the clock. It was 7:00. She hurried to get on the bus. She waited and waited, but the bus never came. So she went inside to see what time it was. It was 8: 00 

She got scared. She was running through the house screaming, "Mom! Mom! The bus forgot me! "

Her mom woke up and sat up. She started to laugh. "School doesn't start till tomorrow, silly, " her mom chuckled.

Anne stood there a minute. "What! I got up for nothing. I have to do this all again tomorrow, " she thought.

When Sabrina Vega was 5 years old, a friend invited her to a party held at a gym where Sabrina discovered that she loved doing gymnastics. 

A few nights after the party, Sabrina had a dream. She told her mother, Jahira, about the dream. Jahira said, "Sabrina said that in her dream she went to the Olympics. She described everything at this international competition. At first I did not take her story seriously. "

But Sabrina kept talking about her dream. She told it to her father, David. So Jahira and David decided to pay for Sabrina to learn gymnastics. 

So Sabrina started to train at a special and competitive gym. Though only 7 years old, she was already training to compete at a high level. The years passed quickly. Sabrina got better and better. By the time she was 12 years old, Sabrina was training so many hours each day that she did not have time to do things that many other Americans of an age did. 

When Sabrina was 13, she had a chance to compete in a national gymnastics event. If she did well, the event would give her the chance to join the national team — the team that trains for the Olympics. 

But the family was out of money. Jahira had to tell Sabrina that she could not go. Jahira said, "Tears came to her eyes, and she said, ‘I understand' . "

A week or two later, a rich family came to visit Sabrina' s gym unexpectedly. They watched Sabrina train. Then they asked to talk to her mother. The rich family offered Jahira all the money they needed! 

Eventually, Sabrina Vega competed at the 2012 Olympic Trials. She finished 10th in the all-round.

Valentine' s Day in China

It is really difficult to know the exact time  western Valentine' s Day was introduced into China. However, western Valentine' s Day is  (wide) celebrated in urban areas where there are a lot of commercial (商业的) events, especially in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Valentine' s Day is not so popular in small cities,  (town) and the countryside. 

So far, Chinese people  (accept) the tradition westerners on celebrating Valentine' s Day, such as  (exchange) gifts, having a romantic dinner, watching a movie in the evening or even making a marriage registration if Valentine' s Day falls on a workday. 

On this day, larger amounts of chocolate will be on sale in supermarkets,  compared with the ordinary days, cinemas will be much  (busy) and the price of flowers and restaurants and hotels can be a lot higher. Many restaurants will have special menus, especially those in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai. If you want to have a smooth  (celebrate) on Valentine' s Day, remember  (make) reservations (预定) as far in advance as you can. 

Chinese people have also made some changes to the western way of celebrating Valentine' s Day. For some couples, the husband may prepare a rich dinner or buy a beautiful dress  his wife on this day to show his appreciation. 

My great-grandfather, my grandfather and my father are all farmers. My father expects me to become a farmer and 1  them all but I don' t agree with my father. 

Three years ago, my father took me to an airport to visit one of his friends. His friend 2  a small airline. It was the first time I had seen a 3  airplane. After my father' s friend discovered I had never been in an airplane, he 4  me to fly with them. When we took off, I felt excited. While we were in the air, I almost forgot I had to 5  the ground. All I could think of was flying would be my 6  in life and how I wanted to fly again and again.

Online courses have become popular in many countries. There are different kinds of online courses, but most show a video of a teacher and students in a classroom. Students watch the video online and take part in online activities. Some courses are free and open to anyone.  Of course, watching videos on a screen is not the same as taking part in a real class. 

  In Singapore, eight schools have been chosen to try new ways of using technology in the classroom. The schools have tablets(平板电脑)and touchscreens instead of books and blackboards in the classrooms.  Through them, students can communicate with each other and work on projects together. 

In South Korea, some students have been taught English by teachers in the Philippines and other countries since 2011. The teachers are in their home countries and are connected to the Korean classrooms via the Internet. Instead of looking at a screen, the students interact with a robot in the classroom. The robot is controlled by the teacher.  

Thanks to technology, more and more ways of teaching and learning are being developed. 

  But one thing is for sure – there has never been a more interesting time to be a student.

Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the  " hurt "  adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest. 

Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else. 

Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don' t make nests. Instead, they get into other birds'  nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them. 

Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner' s hand and start fighting again. 

Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don' t hear them, and they don' t need to share their food. 

As children, many of us learn the saying  " You can' t fool Mother Nature. "  But maybe you can' t trust her, either. 

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what  " keeping up with the Joneses "  is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. 

The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. 

It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City. 

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it  " Keeping up with the Joneses "  because  " Jones "  is a very common name in the United States. " Keeping up with the Joneses "  came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand' s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. 

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are  " Jonses "  in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead. 

The Chinese government ends its one-child policy (政策) and allows families to have three children. The policy is meant to balance population development, stop a falling birth rate (出生率) and strengthen the country' s labor force (劳动力). 

China, with the largest population in the world, started the one-child policy in 1980. But the government allowed only a small number of couples to have two children. For example, some families in the countryside could have two children, if the first-born child is a girl. In 2016, the Chinese government gave other couples a chance to have two children if one of them was an only child. Because of aging of population, in 2021, it allowed families to have three children. 

To the newest policy, different families have different opinions. " Too many young people in the cities are no longer interested in having two or three children, "  an official said. " People in the countryside are more interested. " 

At the end of 2021, China had a population of more than 1. 4 billion people. A total of 900 million of them have jobs. But the labor market population will drop in 30 years. That is to say, the country will be in great need of labor by the year 2050. With the three-child policy, an increase in births can solve this problem.
