The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) included on December 17, 2020 China's Tai Chi on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision was announced during the online meeting of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held from December 14 to 19 in Kingston, capital of Jamaica.

"Born in the mid-17th century in a small village named Chenjiagou located in Central China's Henan province, Tai Chi is not only a kind of traditional Wushu integrated with slow movements and deep breathing, but is also deeply rooted in many areas of Chinese culture, such as medicine and philosophy," Zhu Xianghua says, who is the son of the famous Tai Chi master Zhu Tiancai.

Although it has spread to more than 150 countries and regions, attracting more than 100 million people to practice, the idea that Tai Chi is for the elderly has stopped many young people practicing the ancient Wushu. They think of it as a slow exercise, which is specially made and better suited for their grandparents. Instead, many young people are turning to the Indian practice of yoga to relieve stress, which was placed on the UNESCO's List in 2019.

In order to promote Tai Chi, joint efforts have been made from individuals and the Chinese government in the last decades. Xi'an Jiaotong University requires students to learn Tai Chi. Wang Yunbing, a professor in the university's sports center, stressed that Tai Chi is not only good physical exercise-researchers from the American College of Rheumatology find that it can help manage several diseases but is also connected to ancient Chinese civilization. Since 2014, the World Tai Chi Championships have been held every two years by the International Wushu Federation. It provides a platform for communication and learning between the Tai Chi masters and Tai Chi lovers around the globe. In January 2020, Tai Chi became an official event in the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games.

At just 11 years old, Vince Weishaus runs his own hair salon (发廊) in his parents' basement in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, doing different hairstyles for free.

For Vince, his love of hair started at a very young age. "He has an older sister who had dolls and he would just, at 2 or 3, be playing with the dolls' hair," recalled Emily Weishaus, Vince's mother.

Not long afterward, he also fell in love with braiding (编辫子). "He watched me do a braid, and then he undid the braid and redid it without me ever showing him how to do it," his mother said. He found his true love as a hairstylist (发型师) when he started cutting his grandmother's hair before he was 5. "I feel that's what gave him the confidence to be who he is," she added.

Vince's hairstyling dream became a reality when his parents presented him with a special surprise on his ninth birthday: his very own salon in their basement. His neighbor had a salon in her home, but she decided to pass on her supplies to Vince when she moved.

Family members and friends have stopped by for appointments—all free of charge—at Vincent Charles Salon. The kid's services range from coloring, to braiding the for school dances, family parties, talent shows and more.

He has colored his own hair different colors, from rose gold to purple. He even colors his friends' hair tips before they head off to camp.

Vince loves learning different practices and skills of the trade from other hair mentors, who teaches him many styling skills.

The sky is the limit for Vince—his eventual goal is to become a world-famous hair colorist one day. His advice to anyone who wants to realize their own dreams: "Do what they love and be themselves."

Day 1: Arrive into Sepilok

Welcome to Borneo! You will be met upon arrival at Sandakan airport and then go to Sepilok Nature Resort. In the evening, your guest expert and guide Charles Ryan will give a talk on the trip ahead and then you can enjoy a welcome meal together. After dinner, head out for a night walk in the thick rainforest to search for wildlife(野生动物)active at night.

Day 2: Sepilok Orangutang Rehabilitation Centre

Start early for a pre-breakfast birdwatching walk. Return to the lodge for breakfast and walk the short distance from the resort to the Sepilok Orangutang Rehabilitation Centre. In the afternoon,head out to the Rainforest Discovery Centre. In the evening, Charles will give talks about the day's finds. He will also help you improve your skills to take pictures.

Day 3: River Safaris and Sustainable Farming

There will be an early wakeup call today for coffee and tea, before searching for wildlife. You will finish at the village of Abai for breakfast at one of the houses. Afterwards, visit a forest restoration site, see the effect that it has on wildlife and have an opportunity to plant some trees.After returning by boat to the lodge for lunch, we will take another river trip in search of more wildlife.

Day 4: Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre

After breakfast, leave for the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where you will be given a private tour of the centre by the founder of the centre, Dr Wong. The sun bear is the smallest bear species(物种) in the world. Afterwards,go to an early lunch at San Da Gen Kopitiam. At night, you can walk to search for some wild animals in the forest.

One sunny afternoon, Janes, a seven-year-old girl whose parents went to their farm to harvest corns, was left home with their dog, Yeller. Feeling rather bored, she decided to go out for an adventure alone. With a toy gun in her hand and a whistle around her neck, Jane crossed a large area of grassland into the woods before she realized that she was lost.

Sitting on a rock and wondering what to do, Jane began crying. After a while, she decided to walk along a wide path lined with tall trees and thick bushes. It was getting dark, but she still couldn't find her way home. Suddenly, she heard a strange noise, which was actually the sound of wind blowing leaves. She ran quickly in the woods until there was no road ahead but a river. She lost her toy gun while running. Cold and scared, Jane sat down near the river and fell asleep against a tree.

Her parents were back from work but could not find their daughter. Deeply worried about Jane's safety, they locked the door and went out to search for her.

Their dog, Yeller, was left at home. He noticed something was wrong because it was dark but there was nobody home. He sensed that Jane was in danger. He tried to get out, but the door was locked. He jumped through a window, looked in the fields but couldn't find her anywhere. However, from the ground came a familiar smell as he lowered his head. He followed the smell and walked across the grassland until he found the toy gun. But Jane was not there. The dog circled around the woods, barking loudly into the air.

You have to have a gift for learning languages.

No, you don't.In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. They can't just all be gifted at languages. In language learning it is attitude, not aptitude(天赋) that determines success.

Some immigrants to North America never learn to speak more than broken English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak flawless English. With the Internet, language content is available to anyone with a computer.

To learn a language you need formal classroom instruction.

Classrooms may be economical to run and a great place to meet others. They have the weight of history and tradition behind them. Unfortunately, a classroom is an inefficient place to learn a language.A majority of school kids graduate unable to communicate in languages that they study for 10 or more years.

I would love to learn but 1 don't have the time.

How about the time you spend waiting in line or going for a walk? Why not use that time to listen to a language on your iPad? Once you get started, even 10 or 15 minutes a day will soon grow to 30 minutes a day, or one hour.. As I do, you will find the time.

In the frozen continent of Antarctica scientists fear an alien invasion(侵袭)—not from outer space, but carried in people's pockets and bags.

Seeds and plants accidentally brought to Antarctica by tourists and scientists may introduce alien plant species which could threaten the survival of native plants in the finely balanced ecosystem.

"The people that were carrying the most had lots and lots of seeds. They really were real threats," said Dana Bergstrom, from the Australian Antarctic Division.

"When we take things in through hitchhiking (搭车旅行) then we get species which are competitive. The plants and animals there are not necessarily competitive, so we'd start losing various precious biodiversity on the (Antarctic) continent", Bergstrom told Reuters.

Amongst the alien species discovered were the Iceland Poppy, and Annual Winter Grass—all from cold climates and capable of growing in Antarctica.

The Antarctic Peninsula, where most tourists travel, is now considered a "hot spot" on the frozen continent and the warmer the climate, the easier for seeds to grow. "The peninsula is warming at some of the greatest rates on the planet," said Bergstrom.

The study, the first continent-wide assessment of invasive species in Antarctica, surveyed about 1,000 passengers during 2007-2008, the first year of the International Polar Year, an international effort to research the polar areas.

Bergstrom said the one alien seed that had gained a foothold is Annual Winter Grass. It is a strong weed in the sub-Antarctic and is on the Antarctic island of King George. It has also made its way to the tail part of the Antarctic continent.

Working on a computer with a traditional mouse never came easy for 8-year-old Isabelle Dapkus, who has developmental disabilities. However, Isabelle is now able to access her schoolwork online, all thanks to a fidget mouse (减压鼠标): the Hoglet—a multisensory device that resembles toy. "She's never been able to use a mouse before, and it wasn't for lack of trying, but it was just not the appropriate tool," said her mother, Julia Dapkus, 41, of Michigan.

As virtual learning has become a common option for families during the COVID-19 pandemic, online schooling has also become a struggle for students with developmental disabilities.

The Hoglet—which takes its name from its resemblance to a baby hedgehog (刺猬)—is specially designed with elements from a fidget toy to increase focus for those with developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorder (自闭症). The Hoglet is wireless and minimizes clicking sounds as to not annoy those with autism spectrum disorder.

Parker Lynch, creator of the Hoglet and CEO of Hedgehog Health, met Dapkus at a fundraiser, and he eventually asked her and her daughter to test the mouse out. Children who use a fidget device have an increase in concentration, are not as restless and are more likely to complete tasks in treatment and education, according to a study. The Flushing Hospital Medical Center in New York, which performed the study, found that fidget toys can be academically beneficial for all students, including those with learning disabilities.

Because of research of his own that saw similar results, Lynch decided to create a tool similar to fidget toys that could provide the same functionality. After five years of research and testing, Lynch founded Hedgehog Health and released the company's first product, the Hoglet.

Lynch is now working on a removable and washable cover for the Hoglet as well as another mouse that will stimulate all five senses.

Trucker Gerlock traveled hundreds of thousands of miles with his dog, Holly, who came with him on every route-including his last one. While driving near Dallas, Texas, on the job, the 59-year-old Marylander crashed into a concrete column. Gerlock was killed instantly. Looking in the back of the truck, though, rescue drivers found one survivor.

Rescue workers cut the Chesapeake Bay retriever(切萨皮克海湾寻回犬)—practically untouched—out of the back of the truck, where she'd been sleeping. "It's amazing that anything survived," Sandy Nordhoff, friend of Gerlock, told The Kent County News.

Unsure what happened to Holly, Gerlock's friends from his town of Rock Hall, Maryland, made numerous calls and emails to agencies in order to find out where the dog was. Eventually, they found out she had been staying in Dallas Animal Services shelter and a foster family had taken her in for Thanksgiving. The Rock Hall locals hatched a plan to get her home.

Joe Creighton and Sandy's husband, Russell Nordhoff, both lifelong friends of Gerlock, volunteered to make the 2,800-mile trip from Rock Hall to Dallas and back, which took two days each way. The friends borrowed Gerlock's pickup truck for the road, so Holly would feel more comfortable on the journey home, according to The Kent County News.

Back in Rock Hall, some of Gerlock's friends adopted Holly. Ever since, the dog has been a town icon(偶像), making an appearance in almost every town parade.

"The outpouring of love shown towards Gerlock and Holly was heartwarming," Rock Hall resident Jamie Elburn tells Reader's Digest. "It shows how the companionship of man's best friends and simple kindness can overcome even the most difficult situation!"
