Sometimes it takes a work of art to give the inspiration for advances in science. For example, Elon Musk's dream of humans living on other planets was first inspired by Isaac Asimov's Foundation book series. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is similarly a massive fan of the Star Trek television series. The series inspired him to found his very own space company Blue Origin, according to Forbes magazine.
Let's explore some of the technologies from science fiction that have been brought to life.
● Remote control

Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune features a small flying robot device that is piloted remotely, one of the earliest appearances of drones (无人机) in science fiction. With the first permit for commercial drone use in the US given in 2006, drones became a reality, and can now be found taking on multiple roles. They provide new angles for photography, help farmers maintain their crops and are used in the military. Jeff Bezos has even supported the use of drones to deliver packages for his company Amazon, unveiling a delivery drone back in 2019.

● From thin air

The television show Star Trek, first appearing on screens in 1966, inspired science. One of the most unexpected examples may be the 3D printer. In the program, a device can create any object desired within a matter of seconds.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, US, developed a 3D printer in 2019 that shapes objects using rays of light. They have named the printer the "replicator", the same name as the device in the program to show their inspiration. The device uses light to alter the density of resin (树脂), changing the material from a liquid to a solid in order to shape the desired object.

● Starting the heart

One of the first sci-fi novels, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has had a huge impact on science. Earl Bakken, the inventor of the pacemaker (起搏器), a device placed into the chest that helps the heart to pump blood using small electrical impulses, was inspired by the 1931 movie adaptation of the book. "What intrigued me most was the creative spark of Dr. Frankenstein's electricity," Bakken told The Atlantic. Defibrillators (除颤仪), which restart the heart with an electrical current after a cardiac arrest (心脏骤停), also resemble the electric shock that gave the monster life.

B、The device Dr. Frankenstein placed into the chest. C、The tools Dr. Frankenstein used in his experiments. Every year, workers put up a big, freshly cut evergreen tree (常青树) in a historic building in Asbury Park, New Jersey to celebrate Christmas. But recently workers put up a very different kind of Christmas Tree instead.
Unlike an evergreen, it requires little care and can never die. That is because the 2021 Christmas Tree is made entirely of a thick and strong paper material called cardboard. When the winter holidays end, the "tree" is to be recycled. The piece uses natural and artificial lighting to darken parts of the tree while shining light on others. In this way, the piece's appearance changes throughout the day. The tree's creators sought to honor elements of Asbury Park's natural environment, cityscape (城市风光) and rich musical history.
Opinions on the tree differ enormously. "I like that it's different…It's pretty interesting," said local man Chris Trifari. Local Elizabeth Khimitch offered similar praise. "I think it's very creative." She had come to the Grand Arcade to take pictures of her dogs in front of the tree. Others on the boardwalk were not as pleased by the tree. Antony Solimando said it looked like "an Amazon package." "Can't we just have our traditional tree?" added Amy Mackey.
Michael Lavallee, a local artist who goes by the name Porkchop, created the piece with Brad Hoffer. They call it The Giving Tree. He said the company told him there would not be a natural Christmas tree at Convention Hall this year. "I was asked to come in and do something festive-ish, especially in connection with a holiday." said Porkchop.
Amy Quinn is Asbury Park's deputy mayor (副市长). Quinn said the city doesn't intervene in the Convention Hall decisions, but that she likes the piece. She said, "I love that it's different. Love it or hate it, people are talking about it."
(1)、According to the text, which one is NOT the characteristic of the paper Christmas tree?A、It needs less care. B、It can be reused next year. C、It can change throughout the day. D、It can be recycled.(2)、What can be inferred from the text about the creators of the paper Christmas tree?A、They are both environmentalists. B、They thought the paper Christmas tree was something much more impressive. C、They wanted to show respect to Asbury Park's natural landscape. D、They wanted to create a totally different Christmas for the local people.(3)、What does the underlined word in the fourth paragraph probably mean?A、Dramatic. B、Superb. C、Numerous. D、Celebratory.(4)、Where does the text probably come from?A、A food magazine. B、A travel guide. C、A local newspaper. D、A Science report. -

When I was young , I lived in a quiet small town with my mom. My mom was beautiful and kind but one day she got a contagious(传染的) disease, which was said to be very serious. I was worried about her , seeing her becoming thinner and paler day by day. Mother's Day was coming. I decided to buy mom some flowers to make her happy. There was only one flower shop in the town-Mr. Rocco's.
It was time for Mr. Rocco to shut up shop when I hurried into the florist's (花店). "Now, what is it that you want?" Mr. Rocco turned to me. "I want the most beautiful flower you have." I replied, still breathing hard. "And just how much do you have to pay for this most beautiful flower?" I held out a wet hand showing a quarter and a dime. He nodded, thought for a while and then showed me a plant on the counter. "I can give you this one for 35 cents." he said. "Aw, no," I protested, looking desperately at the poor plant "it looks like a weed(野草)!" About 18 inches high, the plant was in a small pot covered with faded red paper. "Now trust me, boy — I promise that tomorrow morning when you get up, you will find your most beautiful flower." said Mr. Rocco. I knew him to be a good honest man, so I agreed to take it. I believed what Mr. Rocco said about the flower and hoped tomorrow morning there would be a nice surprise for my mom.
It was almost midnight when I arrived home. Mom was seriously sick and using the front bedroom. I looked in to see if she was asleep, and then quietly tiptoed in and set the plant on the table beside her bed. I wanted her to be surprised when she woke on Mother's Day.
