This is a true story about something that happened to me last summer. I was spending the holiday(happy) with my family at a beach in the south of England. I was very(interest) in exploring the local area, so one morning I(wake) up early and set off along the quiet road. In my eagerness to discover the local area, I forgot ( tell ) my parents where I was going.
It was a hot, sunny morning and I soon felt thirsty, but I was determined to challenge(me) by walking to the highest point. I'm a good walker and so I pushed my way up the hill, although it was quite hard work. At the top, I saw many birds (fly) around their nests(鸟巢). Feeling curious, I left the road and moved towards the nests. Aha, there were some baby birds in the nest. "If I take picture of the baby birds, will I be attacked?" With (butterfly) in my stomach, I held my camera up and pointed it at the birds.
Just then, one of the birds made a loud noise. I was so surprised I dropped my camera! I didn't have time to worryit, though. To protect their nests, the birds started to fly at me one by one to make me go away. I rushed back down the hill. Near the bottom of the hill, I heard a car engine. It was my mum's car! I jumped in and shut the door, looking at her in panic. "Go! Go! Go!" I shouted. I spent the rest of the summer saving up for a new camera.

3、阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Teenage life: better now, or in the past?
Does this situation sound familiar(熟悉的)?
You're complaining(抱怨) to your parents about something. Maybe your computer isn't powerful enough to play the latest games. Then you hear...
"When I was your age, there weren't any computers or video games. And I didn't get a bike until I was 16. And it was second-hand. "
So is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It is certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays. So parents have got more money to spend on each child. And many things are cheaper than they were when our parents were children.
Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smartphones. And now these things are necessary—we can't imagine living without them!
However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it's just us, with our computer or television. Teenagers don't do enough exercise. And, although young people still get on well with their friends, some people think teenagers today don't have so many social activities as the teenagers in the past.
What do you think? How is teenage life better these days?
A. And it was too big for me.
B. A typical family is smaller now.
C. You get very unhappy with this.
D. Or your friends' bikes are better than yours.
E. So they aren't as healthy as the teenagers in the past.
F. Life was not easy in the past.
G. Technology is probably the greatest change in our life.

Have you ever imagined what will happen in the ocean when an earthquake happens underground? If you've ever felt a big earthquake or seen one on television you know that it has the power to shake the ground and move large buildings. When a great earthquake happens under the ocean floor, the earthquake's large energy is transferred (转移) to the water above it, creating a series of water waves called a tsunami (海啸). The word comes from the Japanese words tsu (harbor) and nami (wave).
Normal ocean waves have an average wavelength (波长) of about 100 meters and an average height of about 2 meters, while a tsunami can have a wavelength of 193 kilometers or more. Travelling at up to about 800 kilometers per hour in the deep ocean, a tsunami might be at a height of as little as 0.9 meters, which makes it almost impossible to be noticed, even for a ship in the area.
As a tsunami approaches (靠近) a coastline, things begin to change greatly. As it approaches shallow (浅的) waters, the wave speed drops below about 80 kilometers per hour. The wavelength also decreases much, but amplitude—the height of the wave—increases greatly, leading to the huge wall of water along coastlines, which causes great damage to coastal areas.
About 80% of tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ocean. Tsunamis cannot be prevented, but areas that experience tsunamis regularly have developed tsunami warning systems to give as much advance warning as possible to people who live along the coastline. For example, there are tsunami warning signs and warning sirens (警报器) on the top of nearby hills along Japanese coastlines. And many Japanese coastal communities have built tsunami walls, floodgates and others to stop or change the direction of water from incoming tsunamis.
(1)、According to the passage, tsunamis are hard to find mainly because of ____.A、their low sound B、their low height C、their fast speed D、their short wavelength(2)、What does the underlined word "decreases" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A、Changes. B、Develops. C、Reduces. D、Produces.(3)、The last paragraph is mainly about ____.A、how to study tsunamis B、where tsunamis always happen C、what tsunami warning systems include D、how to reduce damages caused by tsunamis(4)、Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A、The word "tsunami" comes from Japanese. B、An earthquake is sure to cause a tsunami. C、About 80 percent of tsunamis happen in Japan. D、Tsunamis can be stopped by warning systems. -

Many people are trying to learn a new language. Some of them consider it as a hobby, while others have to learn a language because it is required by their jobs or study. As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like learning Chinese.
It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese characters (汉字) to understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3,000 characters sounds like an impossible task, for many of the Chinese characters look the same. That's why some people give up halfway. It's the most difficult part for me, too. But I manage to learn how to write each character by watching videos online. Whenever I saw a character I didn't know in the street or on a menu, I would just write it down on my phone and then look it up. Slowly I've learned the characters that are common in daily life.
It's also important to listen to Chinese as much as possible. I downloaded (下载) a lot of listening materials onto my phone and listened to them on the way to school, work and even dates with my friends. I also watched a lot of Chinese TV shows and films, where the words were not so difficult and there were always subtitles (字幕). In this way, I've also learned how to express myself like a native.
As for speaking, I practice talking about different topics in Chinese when I am cycling around, effectively talking to myself or in my head, thinking through different conversations and scenarios (场景). For example, whenever I was going to a shop, I would think how to say that in Chinese. It helps me to think in a Chinese way, which is really important.
Learning a language is never easy. Basically, I just use every tool on hand and take my learning step by step, and I'm still learning new things to this day!
(1)、The author learns Chinese because ____.A、he wants to move to China B、he has found a job in China C、he takes Chinese as a hobby D、he hopes to know more about China(2)、How does the writer learn so many new Chinese characters?A、By reading newspaper. B、By watching videos online. C、By picking up every Chinese character in daily life. D、By downloading materials online.(3)、What is the key point in practicing speaking?A、Thinking as a Chinese. B、Watching Chinese movies. C、Hanging out with Chinese friends. D、Talking to oneself in Chinese.(4)、What would be the best title for the text?A、Practice Makes Perfect B、It Takes Time to Learn A Language C、How To Learn Chinese D、Chinese Isn't As Hard As You Think -

I'm a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A's in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks' home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I'm contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I'm especially proud of my service at the old folks' home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
(1)、What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?A、His good grades got him a good job. B、He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely. C、His views on social values are well known. D、He is content with his scholastic achievements.(2)、Which role does the author play in his parents' relationship?A、A helper. B、A judge. C、A monitor D、A supporter.(3)、What is the greatest accomplishment for the author?A、The contribution to volunteering. B、The success in exams. C、The recovery of confidence in life. D、The work in community service.(4)、Why does the author want to major in social work at university?A、To gain a well-paid job. B、To give his life a purpose. C、To meet his grandparents' expectations. A man came home from work late, tired and impatient (不耐烦的), to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
"Daddy, may I ask you a question?"
"Yeah sure, what is it?" replied the man.
"Daddy, how much do you make an hour?"
"That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?" the man said angrily.
"I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?" pleaded (恳求) the little boy.
"If you must know, I make $20 an hour."
"Oh," the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, "Daddy, may I please borrow $10?"
The father was angry, "If the only reason you borrowed some money is to buy a silly toy, then you walk straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish (自私的). I work hard every day for such childish behavior."
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn't ask for money very often.

I once gave a lesson to a group of primary school students for a TV program.
I suggested that we create small gardens.
First, I asked the students to look for their favorite place in the school. Then I had each of them describe their experiences of nature in a small garden.
In a box of about one and a half by two feet, they were free to organize—soil, stones, leaves and grass. Even as an active garden designer, I was impressed with their imagination.
One child created "water" that flowed into a "lake"; another child put grass in a way to represent "wind"; and yet another child tried hard to create shade... That was why they took great interest when they created their small gardens. They spent a wonderful time together with nature.
If you notice a stone lying on the ground, pick it up and hold it. When you see beautiful flowers by the side of the road, stop and enjoy the pleasant smell.
Then, inside your mind, create a small garden of your own.
A. It will relax you.
B Flowers like these are all around you.
C. The gardens were built many years ago.
D. Try spending time with nature yourself.
E. The gardens they made were really creative.
F. Once there, I let them try hard to empty their minds.
G. These children were often busy doing their schoolwork.

When my oldest son was in high school, he planned to attend a concert with his young friends. To my surprise, Aron invited me to go along. I quickly accepted. However, by the time the date of the concert arrived, my youngest son had been ill, and I was worried about him. My husband encouraged me to attend the concert, promising he would look after our youngest son. Finally, it hit me. Aron was 16 years old. How many years would I have to do something fun with him before he went to college? And how many youths invite their mothers to attend a concert with them that was clearly for teens? The decision was made. I'd not miss this chance.
At the concert, I sat with Aron in the third row, stuffing (填满) cotton in my ears to block out the loud music of the first performer. I stood when the kids stood, clapped (鼓掌) when they clapped, and never let anyone know how nervous I was to feel the floor shaking under my feet. Aron and his friends were amazed at my enthusiasm (热情).
When we left the concert, my ears were ringing, but it quickly passed. So did my son's teenage years. Soon he was in college and away from home. I missed him more than I could say. On days when I was especially lonely for his happy smile, I would think back to the concert we attended and thank myself again that I didn't miss a chance to spend time with my son.
Aron is now grown and has a family of his own, but we are still very close. Some days he calls just to chat and tell me about his day. I drop everything and enjoy the moment, knowing these times shall pass.
(1)、Why did Aron's mother decide to attend a concert with Aron?A、Because she showed great interest in a concert with loud music. B、Because Aron's father promised her to look after the sick 16-year-old child. C、Because she valued the chance to spend time with her son. D、Because it was not polite to refuse Aron's rare invitation.(2)、Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A、Aron's mother loved Aron more than her youngest son. B、Aron's mother really enjoyed every minute of the concert. C、Though Aron was very shy, his mother was still proud of him. D、It was the loud music that led to the shaking of the floor during the concert.(3)、What can we learn from the passage?A、It's necessary for parents to spend time with their children all the time. B、Aron's mother sometimes regretted attending the concert when thinking back. C、Aron felt lonely from time to time after he attended college far from home. D、Aron still has a close relationship with his mother even after he becomes an adult. -

Beep! Beep! Beep! The barcode (条形码) technology (科技) makes it faster and easier to buy things in stores. This year, the great invention is 51 years old!
On a Sunday afternoon in 1971, an IBM engineer named George Laurer came up with a code (代码) that could be printed on food packages (包装). Based on this code, a complete code system came into being later. The system was used by many companies from 1973. Before this, shopkeepers had to write down prices by hand, which took much time and energy.
Actually, a barcode is really a simple idea: show each product's information in different numbers (just like the ID card number for the product), then include these numbers into a code and print it for computers to read. It has turned out to be a really great invention.
What information does a barcode carry? Where the product comes from, its price, production date… you name it. It can also help stores always know about their products. For example, if there are 10 boxes of milk and a customer buys one, it will be recorded so that the store owner knows there are nine boxes left on the shelf. In the 1980s, libraries started using barcodes to follow their books in this way.
Inspired (启发) by it, the more developed codes have been invented later, such as QR codes. QR codes can hold more information. They can tell customers what materials are used in a product or if the product is suitable for certain people. This keeps providing the customers with greater trust in the products they will buy.
(1)、What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A、The code system was made in the morning. B、Many companies began to use barcodes in 1971. C、The IBM engineer named George Laurer is 51 years old now. D、It was hard to record products' prices before barcodes were invented.(2)、What can we learn from the passage?A、Libraries use QR codes to follow their books. B、QR codes have a history of more than 50 years. C、People use QR codes more often than barcodes now. D、The barcode can be used to record the number of products.(3)、Why does the writer write the passage?A、To show some changes of stores. B、To call on people to use barcodes. C、To introduce a great invention to people. D、To introduce a great engineer to people. -

Please sit down and enjoy your meal. Just don't talk about it.
These are the requirements at a popular dining party that is known as "silent dinners". It encourages people who take part in the dining party not to speak for one to two hours and not to use electronic devices. Instead, the idea is to just on the food.
"Silent dinner parties are fast growing," said Honi Ryan, who has hosted 32 silent dinner parties in 11 cities across eight countries, including Germany, Australia and the United States. "The way we communicate is changing so fast that we need to stop and think about it. "
According to a 2013 nationwide survey, restaurant noise came in second only to poor service among customer (顾客) complaints. And 19 percent of diners who took part in the survey said noise and crowds disturbed them most while eating out.
Though silent dinners may seem curious, the idea is not a new one. Yogis (瑜伽信徒) have long enjoyed silent meals as part of a deepened practice. In fact, it was a trip to a temple (寺庙) in India by a man that encouraged one Brooklyn restaurant recently to add a silent dinner to its event programming.
"We'll make a small speech at the beginning of the meal to make sure everyone understands what is happening and ask them not to speak or use their mobile phones for at least an hour, " said EAT Greenpoint owner Jordan Colon. And background music will be turned off, too.
"It's funny; when I first opened EAT, I didn't play music for some time and people had very different reactions (反映) to that," said Colon. "Some people who come out to eat are ready to party, but it was so quiet without music. But I wanted to create an environment that makes you relaxed. "
Although personal reactions to a silent dinner may be various, in general they are more likely to get into a lot of talk afterwards, said Ryan. "At the end of the night people always have a lot to say about silence. But the most reaction is that there is always a good laugh."

Ryan picked up a snowball and began to polish it so that soon it was hard as a cricket ball. He smiled to himself. Now, all that he needed was a target. He walked down the High Street.
Paul was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was a skinny boy whose legs were so thin that they looked as if you could break them. He was so skinny that the other kids used to joke about him getting blown away when it was windy. He was helping old Mrs McTell by sweeping the snow off the path and putting salt down to melt the ice. He liked Mrs McTell.
Paul had his head down and was sweeping a piece of ice when the snowball struck him full in the face. He staggered(踉跄) back, put his hand to his lip and wiped off the dirt. He heard Ryan laughing and shouting names. But Paul ignored it. He had had problems with Ryan at school and did not want to stir up more trouble. He ducked down and made his way round to the back of Mrs McTell's to see if she wanted any shopping.
Bored by the silence, Ryan soon gave up and walked down to the park. It was a short-cut to home and by now his fingers were aching with the cold. The park pond was frozen over and Ryan laughed at a couple of ducks, waddling(摇摆着走) on the ice. They were finding it hard to keep balance. Quickly, Ryan picked up a stick and without thinking made his way onto the ice. In his mind's eye, he could see the feathers flying as he hit one of the ducks.
Ryan was a few yards out when the ice cracked. It sounded like gun shot across the frozen park. The ice broke into pieces before his eyes. Screaming, he fell straight down into the icy water. The ducks flew off.
