One day in early December, we woke up to discover a heavy fall of snow. "Mom, can we go 1 after breakfast? " my eleven-year-old daughter Erica begged. I didn't want to 2 her request, so we headed towards the only 3 in our town.

When we arrived, the hill was crowded with people. We found an open spot next to a thin man and his three-year-old son. The boy was already lying in the sled, 4 to be launched. "Come on, Daddy!" he called.

The man looked over at me. "Okay if we go 5 ? " he asked.

"Sure. Looks like your son is ready to go, " I said. With that, he gave the boy a huge 6 , and off he flew! And the father ran after his son at full speed.

"He must be afraid that his son is going to 7 somebody, " I said to Erica. "We'd better be 8 , too. "

Then we also skied down the hill at a great speed. As we returned to the top, I noticed that the man was 9 his son, who was still lying in the sled, back up to the summit. When we reached the top, the boy was ready to play again. Again, the father 10 him down the hill, and then pulled both the boy and the sled back up. The little boy was terribly spoilt by his father, I thought. 11 he was small, the child could pull his own sled up the hill once in a while. This 12 went on for more than an hour, but the man never 13 , and he was very happy instead. Finally, I could 14 it no longer. I called to him, "You have tremendous 15 !"

I was dumbstruck (惊呆的). It had all seemed so happy, so 16 , that it never occurred to me that the child might be 17 . Although I didn't know the man's name, I told the 18 in my newspaper column. Either he or someone he knew must have recognized him, 19 shortly afterward, I received this letter:

    Dear Mrs. Silverman,

Scientists often see the first ten years of a child's life as the "window of opportunity". And studies show that the following activities can benefit their brain greatly.

Free playtime has always been an important part of "being a kid", but it is also important to a child's development. "Free play" not only helps kids develop different skills, it also helps them develop into happy healthy adults in the future.

    Read with kids

Reading has long been known to improve children's intelligence. For parents who don't have much time, just surrounding your kids with books goes a long way, too.

    Put kids to bed early

Preschool children should get at least eleven hours of sleep and kids up to age 12 should try to get at least ten hours of sleep.

    Learn a second language

Early studies in this field have shown that bilingual(双语的) kids can perform better under pressure. Young children can learn new languages with nearly perfect fluency and pronunciation.

    Praise good effort not intelligence

Your kids may be smart but you should mainly praise the effort they put into tasks. Kids, who are praised on intelligence, often feel it is a fixed quality, and mistakes or failures badly hurt their self-confidence. Kids who are praised on effort often focus more on learning.

    A. Play some helpful games

    B. Give them enough playtime

    C. And they are not afraid to fail and try again.

    D. Kids still need time away from the TV to do homework.

    E. Kids who read often develop earlier writing and number skills as well.

    F. Everything at this time is very important to the development of a person's brain.

    G. Studies show that kids with regular bedtime are better at languages, maths and reading.

"OK. Welcome to a new school year. I'm Mr Stevens and I'm sure I'll learn all your names in no time. " He walked around the class handing out maths books. Whenit was done, he returned to the front of the class and looked at us. We stared back. "What are you waiting for? Get started? " he said.
