The Food Trainer (FoodT app) trains people to tap on images of healthy foods ― but to stop when they see unhealthy snacks, creating an association between these foods and stopping.

The new study, by the universities of Exeter and Helsinki, found that playing the game about once a day for a month led to an average one-point reduction of junk food consumption on an eight-point scale.

About half of the study's 1,234 participants followed the recommendation and played the game at least 10 times. Across all participants, an average weight loss of half a kilogram and a small increase in healthy food eaten were seen.

"As an example, someone who ate each junk food two to four times a week reduced this to once a week after using the app regularly for a month," said Professor Natalia Lawrence, of the University of Exeter.

"The app is free and it only takes about four minutes per day ― so it's something people realistically can do ― and our results suggest it is effective. And there's some evidence that the benefits were stronger for people who were more overweight."

"We would expect to see this, because the app targets mechanisms(机制)that lead people to become overweight, such as the strong desires to approach and consume junk foods."

Dr Matthias Aulbach, of the University of Helsinki, added, "For anyone with unhealthy eating habits, FoodT might be helpful."

The findings suggest that using the app regularly was linked with bigger changes in eating habits.

Dr Aulbach stressed that their findings should be interpreted cautiously (谨慎地), because there was no comparison group and other factors (such as the possibility that people who did more training were also separately more motivated to lose weight) could play a part in the results.

One app user said, "Really useful. My desires have reduced dramatically and I no longer eat in the evening mindlessly."

Development of the app was made possible by donations, and app users who allow their data to be used have enabled this research and app improvements to be made.

(1)、How does the FoodT app help people?
A、By changing their eating habits. B、By driving them to cook regularly. C、By choosing healthy food for them. D、By providing them with healthy recipes.
(2)、What can we learn about the study?
A、Its participants were overweight people. B、It examined different people's eating habits. C、It centered on junk food's role in people's life. D、Its findings met the researchers' expectations.
(3)、What might Dr Aulbach agree with?
A、The app will soon be put on the market. B、More research needs to be done about the app. C、Game enthusiasts will be the app's main users. D、Regular use of the app helps people work more efficiently.
(4)、What is the author's attitude to the app's future?
    A、Doubtful. B、Curious. C、Positive. D、Uncaring.

The Amazon rainforest is nearing a tipping point (临界点), according to researchers from the University of Exeter, UK.

Previous studies have warned that the world's largest rainforest, which acts as the lung of the Earth, is approaching a critical threshold (限度). But most past research has depended on projections using models, not real-world observations.

Now, Tim Lenton and his colleagues have used two sets of satellite data covering between 1996 and 2016 to measure the greenness of the Amazon over time, watching for how it recovered after impacts such as drought and fires.

They found that since the early 2000s, 76 per cent of the region had become less resilient. Importantly, says Lenton, the signal of this growing trouble was picked up without immediately obvious changes such as huge drops in the forest's biomass (生物量) or tree cover.

"Why do we care about it? It's worth reminding ourselves that if it gets to that tipping point and we lose the Amazon rainforest then we get a significant feedback to global climate change," says Lenton. He says a change into savannah (稀树草原) would unlock about 90 billion tons of carbon dioxide stored in the trees and soil.

Lenton says he cannot put an exact date on how far off the rainforest's tipping point might be, but he expects it to be a process that would take in a few years. Other Amazon experts say the research adds to a growing body of evidence that the rainforest is approaching a tipping point.

The changes aren't the same throughout the rainforest. The south-eastern part of the Amazon has already changed to the point at which it is now a carbon emitter (释放者) rather than a carbon sink.

Matt Finer at the Amazon Conservation non-profit organization says the research could help decide which remaining parts of the forest to prioritize (优先) for protection. "The western and north-east Amazon appear the most resilient, showing the need to protect these areas now and in the future from any more damages," he says.

(1)、How does Lenton conduct his research?
A、By using previous models. B、By collecting data from the locals. C、By observing drought and fires. D、By using data from satellites.
(2)、What can we learn about the changes in the forest?
A、They are not very noticeable at present. B、They have little effect on climate. C、People needn't worry about them. D、People have prepared for them.
(3)、What does the underlined word "resilient" in paragraph 4 mean?
A、able to produce carbon. B、able to recover. C、easy to extinct. D、easy to observe.
(4)、What does the author intend to do with the last paragraph?
A、To list the threats facing the rainforest. B、To show the differences of the changes. C、To list the results of the research. D、To show the significance of the research.

After a 141-day adventure, Brendon Prince is in a position to become the first person to complete a circumnavigation(环线航行)of mainland Britain on a standup paddleboard____(桨叶式冲浪板), covering nearly 2,500 miles.

Prince, a father of three, paddled up to 16 hours a day, with the last leg (一段行程) on Tuesday a 25-mile trip along the Devon coast to his home in Torquay in relatively good conditions. "It feels great," he told The Guardian as he paddled to his final destination on his board.

Prince began his trip at the end of April when, in his words, he turned right out of Torquay ― and then headed clockwise(按顺时针方向)around Britain. He estimates that he has put his paddle into the water 8 million times. It was all done in the spirit of adventure but also to raise awareness of water safety. Prince was an off-duty lifeguard when he took part in an attempt to save a group of holidaymakers who got into trouble in the water at Mawgan Porth, in north Cornwall, in 2014. Three of the visitors drowned.

From that day, he has made it his life's mission to teach drowning prevention, founding the charity Above Water. Money raised during his circumnavigation will be used to develop a water safety app for schools. He said, "If just one child stayed safe when near water having heard about this achievement, it would have been worthwhile."

Prince said the north was the coldest, the east the windiest, the south the most "gnarly" (which he defines as a state that leaves you feeling somewhere between feeling uncomfortable and feeling in danger), while the west was the wildest. Prince paddled without a support boat and the longest distance covered in a single day was 47 miles. The shortest, when the weather was particularly poor, was just over a mile. Prince said paddling in human-made environments proved trickier than in natural ones. "Nature is easier to predict than humans," he said.

A、Creating an app for schools. B、Promoting the use of a new app. C、Improving school buildings in Torquay. D、Providing swimming lessons for children in Torquay.
(3)、Which words can best describe Prince's trip?
    A、Long but fruitless. B、Short but meaningful. C、Difficult and dangerous. D、Unpredictable and little-known.
(4)、Where is the text probably from?
A、A guidebook. B、An official document. C、A news report. D、A science journal.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from different primary schools were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.

What for? He had 3  so hard for this event!

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or 4 like other children, but at school his classmates regarded him as a 5 kid. He always participated to the best of his 6 in whatever they were doing. That's why none of the children thought it 7 that David had decided to join the cross-country team. David had not missed a single 8 , and he did always finish.

Sitting down next to him, I said gently, "If you desire to 9 yourself, nothing can stop you." He sat still with a deep 10 . "You have prepared fully, which is why you 11 here", I 12 sincerely. Finally, he said with a fierce but quiet 13 , "I'm going to run."

We're living in modern times and it seems like we never have enough time. We all get the same amount in a day, a week, and a year. It just depends on how we use it. Rather than all getting the same amount of time to spend,

? What if we could control the way we consume our time to a greater extent? Here are three unexpected ways to give ourselves more time.

    Help others

This might seem strange, but people who have more time often give it away through volunteering and helping others. A study that compared the opportunities to waste time, spend time on oneself, or spend a gift of time found that giving time selflessly actually increased people's perception of time. ?

When we do the same things every day, our brains tend to take shortcuts, and our efforts don't require as much conscious thought. This makes time seem to go more quickly. In contrast, when we do things in new or unexpected ways, our brains engage more consciously. We experience time as slowing down because we're more present and putting more work into the thinking that goes into the task. We can apply this research by selecting when we choose to do things in new ways versus our typical way. . But if you want to extend your perception of time, take the winding road or a new route on the way home from the office.

    Take control

. It's a problem when we have too much to do in too little time, especially when we're not the ones deciding how we spend our time. We can take back a sense of having enough time by incorporating as much control as possible, and by redesigning our days. Even the simple act of pausing for 10 minutes to think about how you want to spend your time-which project to start on, which call to return, or which email to prioritize-can reassert a greater sense of time abundance.

    A. Do things in new ways

    B. Seek the experience of awe

    C. what if we could have more

    D. That way, rather than being slaves to time, we can be masters of it

    E. Go the same route every time if you prefer your drive to work to go quickly

    F. Why not lend a hand to others if you want to control and even expand time

Surfing has deep roots, but for the first time, surfers are competing for medals at the Summer Olympics. At Tsurigasaki Beach, 40 miles from Tokyo, they're also riding big waves ahead of a storm.

"The incoming tide push over the afternoon does look to provide a lot of fun waves." reports Kurt Korte, the official surf forecaster for the Tokyo Olympics. He works for Surfline, a company based in Huntington Beach, California. He says while it might rain at Tsurigasaki Beach, it should be a great day for the surfing finals at the Olympics.

While new to the Olympics, surfing has a long history. In pre-Inca Peru and wherever there's been a nearby ocean, people have long been surfing in one form or another. Ancient warriors in Tahiti and Samoa used to train by surfing. In Polynesia, surfing was also considered an art form. But modern surfing became popular near the start of the 20th century in Hawaii.

Getting surfing to the Olympics was a dream of Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku more than a century ago. Decades before Hawaii became a U.S. state, he earned five Olympic medals for swimming, starting in 1912. Kahanamoku had grown up surfing with his brothers in Waikiki. A news reporter in the 1960's once asked him, "Duke, was it more of a thrill for you to win those Olympic Games, or ride some of those big waves you used to ride?" "I think surfing is much more to me, the greatest thrill of my life," he answered.

Former professional surfer Matt Warshaw said, "Unlike most other sports in competition at the Olympics, so much of surfing depends on Mother Nature: the wind and the waves." At the moment, these surfers are hoping for some sick waves for the Olympic finals. But with the ocean, you never know.

    (1)、What do Korte's words suggest?
A、It will rain dogs and cats. B、The surfing event will be rained out. C、Surfing first became the Olympic event in Tokyo. D、The coming day will bring satisfactory waves.
(2)、What can be learned about surfing?
A、It has deep roots in the history of Olympics. B、Ancient warriors in Tahiti used to train by surfing. C、In Samoa, it was regarded as an art form. D、Modern surfing gains popularity in Polynesia.
(3)、What did Matt Warshaw say about surfing?
