Isaac Asimov's Foundation arrives on Apple TV+ nearly 80 years after the story's first publication. It's the first big adaptation of the famous science fiction novels - but it is going beyond just the events of that original 1951 novel to integrate elements from across Asimov's vast universe, including the subject that he's most famous for: robots.

Over the course of his career, Asimov is probably best known for both Foundation, and his robot stories and novels. In his introduction to his 1990 collection of robot stories, Robot Visions, Asimov explained that he wanted to flip the script on the types of robots that he'd grown up reading about in magazines. "I determined to write a robot story about a robot that was wisely used, that was not dangerous, and that did the job it was supposed to do." His first story was Robbie, published in 1940.

Asimov collected the various short stories that made up the Foundation and Robot worlds into two novels. I. Robot brought together nine of those original robot stories and came out in 1950, while the Foundation stories were released in three volumes called Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation. But he kept the two series separate, noting in his memoir (回忆录), "If I got tired of one of them (or if the readers did), I could continue with the other with a minimum of troubling overlap (重叠)."

Midway through the 1960s, Asimov ended up taking a bit of a break from writing science fiction novels, but was eventually enticed (怂恿) back in the early 1980s by his publisher, Doubleday. "Isaac, we want you to write a novel for us," editor Betty Prashker told him. A follow-up call from Doubleday clarified: "When Betty said 'a novel' , we meant `a science fiction novel'; and when we say `a science fiction novel' , we mean 'a Foundation novel.' " Dutifully, Asimov began to think up a continuation of the story, which would eventually become Foundation's Edge, the fourth volume of the series. When it hit bookstore shelves in 1982, it was an immediate bestseller.

(1)、What will Apple TV+ do according to the text?
A、Use robots to rewrite the Foundation series. B、Broadcast the adaptation of Foundation. C、Sell the Foundation series through live-stream. D、Analyze elements in Foundation for the audience.

On 21 October, 2021, fans celebrated the 80th anniversary (周年纪念) of Wonder Woman's first appearance in a comic book. Wonder Woman' s publisher, DC Comics, said, "She is far more than just a warrior (战士). She's an ambassador for peace who champions love and compassion (同情心)"

Wonder Woman first appeared in All Star Comics Issue 8 in 1941. The character was created by William Moulton Marston and drawn by Harry G. Peter. Wonder Woman's powers include superhuman strength, reactions and speed. She can fly, has super senses and does not age.

Wonder Woman was not the very first female superhero but she is one of the most famous. She has been a constant in comics for 80 years. To appreciate what she has taught us, DC Comics has decided to highlight 23 inspiring women who are trying to make the world a better place in a new book. DC Comics says, Wonder Woman reminds us that there are no restrictions on what we're capable of - no limits to what we can achieve and no compromise (妥协) on justice and equality for all.

Bailey Martin's running route starts on the gray gravel (砂砾) of her family's driveway. She'll run around the seven large bins and a garage on their farm. One full lap around is perfect for a runner like Martin. It's exactly 400 meters.

"If you can balance running at full speed on gravel, you can do that on the track too. I've definitely fallen a few,timcs taking these corners a bit too sharp," Martin said. It's a small price to pay for Martin, who enjoys the familiarity of the route. Every little thing helps when you' re blind.

At age 12, Martin was discovered to have acute macular neuroretinopathy, a rare disease without a known cure. About six months later, it cost Martin her vision. She was blind.

Martin didn't want to give up sports - she didn't want to lose the most important part of her life. Her mother said, "She hit lots of trees. She hit every ditch (沟渠). It didn't stop her. If she wants to do it, she'll figure it out."

Martin's story reached officials at OrCam, a technology company. The company developed a product called MyEye, which was created to help the visually impaired (受损的). The product sits on a user's glasses and with a camera, takes pictures of text, faces or other things. It then reads back what it sees to the user through a small microphone near the ear.

An OrCam official wanted to try it out on some users. The company was looking for visually impaired people with athletic backgrounds. Martin was suggested. OrCam told her to make a tape telling her story. The tape inspired company officials.

Martin is driven to keep going and keep competing. The fact that she's overcome as much as she has even surprises and inspires herself.

"I look at my past self as more of an inspiration," Martin said. "Sometimes, I look back and appreciate how I got through and became the person that I am."

When he was a teenager, Hunter Adams was very unhappy, and he spent many years in the 1960s and 1970s in a special hospital for people with mental health problems.

When he left the hospital, Adams decided to become a doctor, so he went to a medical school in Virginia, the USA. For example, he didn't like the doctors' white coats, so he wore shirts with flowers on them when he visited his patients, and he tried to make them laugh. The doctors at the medical school didn't like Adams very much because he was too different.

He saw unhappy and lonely people, and he tried to help them as patients, but as people too. He spent a lot of time with children in the hospital, and often put a special red nose on his face to look like a clown and to make the children laugh.

When he finished medical school and became a doctor, Adams opened his own hospital, called "The Gesundheit! Institute", together with some other doctors.

Hunter Adams became famous during the 1980s, and in 1998, Universal Pictures made a film about his life.

In the film (called Patch Adams),Robin Williams played Adams. Williams said, "Hunter is a really warm person, who believes that patients need a doctor who's a friend. "

Music is good for health. And drumming may be best of all. As well as being physically demanding, it requires people to adjust their limbs and to react to outside stimuli, such as what the rest of the band is up to. It is particularly helpful for children who have emotional and behavioral difficulties.

Researchers at the Clem Burke Drumming Project, an organization named after Blondie's drummer, who was one of its founders, have found that teaching such children to drum helps them to control their reactions more generally, to focus more effectively on tasks they are given, and to communicate better with other people.

The project's latest work, led by Cahart of King's College London, goes a step further. It looks at the neurological (神经系统的)changes which accompany these shifts.

Ms. Cahart and her colleagues found 36 autistic(自闭症的) teenagers and divided them into two groups. One had drum lessons twice a week for eight weeks. The others did not. At the beginning and end of the project everyone was asked to stay still for 45 minutes in a machine to see how the activity of their brains had changed. Their behavior was also recorded.

As expected, most of the drumming group showed positive behavioral changes. And these were indeed reflected in their brains. The machine scans showed that several groups of connectivity between parts of those brains had strengthened during the experiment. In particular, two regions involved in attention control, formed strong links, respectively, with places associated with introspection(内省) and with areas involved in understanding facial expressions.

These changes in the brain thus nicely match the changes in behavior which learning to drum brings. Not a surprise, perhaps. But a confirmation of drumming's power to heal(治愈) oneself.

(1)、Which is not the benefit of drumming for children who have emotional and behavioral difficulties?
A、To be more brilliant and active. B、To control their reactions more generally. C、To communicate better with other people. D、To focus more effectively on tasks they are given.
(2)、What are recorded in the process of the project?
A、The way and frequency of drumming. B、People's attention control on drumming. C、People's emotion and their behavior. D、Activity of people's brains and their behavior.
(3)、What are the main changes in the brain caused by drumming?
A、Places associated with introspection are more active. B、Connectivity between parts of brains is strengthened. C、Regions involved in attention control become stronger. D .Changes in the brain cannot match the changes in behavior.
(4)、What is this article mainly about?
A、The way of keeping healthy. B、The healing effect of drumming. C、The relationship between the brain and behavior. D、The relationship between drumming and brain changes.

Fou Ts'ong, a Chinese-born pianist known for his sensitive interpretations of Chopin, Debussy and Mozart,

died on Monday at a hospital in London, where he had as lived for many years. He was 86.

A lover of classical music from a young age, Mr.Fou began taking piano lessons when he was 7. Mr. Fou made his first stage appearance in 1952.The concert caught the attention of officials in Beijing, who selected him to compete and tour in Eastern Europe. Mr.Fou soon moved to Poland, where he studied at the Warsaw Conservatory on a scholarship to prepare for the fifth International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955. He practiced so diligently that he hurt his fingers and was nearly cut from the first round of the competition.

Mr. Fou was one of the first Chinese pianists to achieve global prominence when he took third place in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955. He also won a special prize for his performance of Chopin's mazurkas. Almost overnight, he became a national hero. To China, Mr. Fou's recognition in a well-known international competition was proof that the country could stand on its own artistically in the West. Chinese reporters flocked to interview Mr. Fou, while many others sought out his father, Fu Lei, for advice on educating children.

In 1981, a volume of letters written by his father, primarily to Mr. Fou, was published in China. Full of advice, encouragement, life teachings and strict paternal love, the book Fu Lei's Family Letters became a best-seller in China. Besides influencing a generation of Chinese, Mr. Fu's words resonated long after his death among people for whom they were intended.

Jack Andraka was 15 when he came up with an idea for a new way to test for pancreatic(胰腺) cancer. When Andraka was 14, a family friend died of the disease, and this affected him deeply. This kind of cancer is particularly serious because there is no test you can have done to find it in the early stages. By the time standard tests determine you have the disease, it is often too late. Realizing that this was the case, Andraka decided to try to develop a test that might catch problems at the earliest stages.

The road ahead looked difficult for Andraka. He was still a high school student, and he wanted to create something that no one else had done. Andraka read endlessly about the disease, wrote a proposal for his idea, and sent it out to 200 cancer researchers. Only one professor, Dr. Anirban Maitra, responded positively. Dr. Maitra agreed to work with Andraka on his idea, giving him guidance and access to a laboratory.

The next big reward for Andraka's perseverance was winning the grand prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. This great award is given to young innovators who have developed a world-changing idea. Developing the test is likely to take many years, but Andraka hopes the test will eventually improve people's lives and maybe save them.

Jack Andraka is not alone as a young innovator. After all, there were 1,499 other contestants for the Intel award, and all of them had ground-breaking ideas. For Andraka, having a family that loves science and encourages creative thinking gave him an advantage. But the key for Andraka is that reading, research, and discovery are just plain fun and the chance to improve the world around him in the process makes it even better.

(1)、What made Andraka decide to develop a test for pancreatic cancer?
    A、His friend's encouragement. B、An upsetting experience. C、His extensive reading. D、An important test.
(2)、What difficulty did Andraka meet at the beginning of his research?
A、Lack of positive replies from experts. B、Heavy pressure from his schoolwork. C、Little access to research equipment. D、Great need for money to develop a test.
(3)、Which of the following leads to Andraka's award winning?
A、The competition with other contestants. B、His determination and persistence to improve the world. C、The support from his family. D、His passion for discovery.
(4)、What can we learn from Andraka's story?

Productivity seems to be the holy grail(圣杯)of the working world. Imagine the perfect day—working from dusk to dawn, a productivity machine. Thankfully, a productive lifestyle isn't all that difficult to achieve. In line with that, here are some steps highly productive people do that you can carry out in your own life.

There's one thing everyone must have in common - listening to our bodies. If we don't listen to our bodies, productivity isn't sustainable. They notice signs such as lack of sleep and constantly feeling tired. But, most importantly, they act. During the working day, highly productive people know how their bodies work and adapt their schedules. For example, by doing small tasks first, productive people set themselves up for a successful afternoon.

Every minute is maximized to its full potential, whether it's relaxing after work or a period of deep work. For starters, organizational tools such as Trello are popular, and with good reason. Email marketers have more attractive tools such as Convert-Kit that automate the email sequence. Automating may sometimes be annoying to set up, but it saves so much time which better used elsewhere. When you learn to maximize your time as highly productive people do, maintaining longer periods of efficient work becomes easier.

The benefits of prioritizing downtime can not be understated. Sleep, the ultimate rest, is vital to a productive person's weapon. For example, a study found that when you sleep for four hours or less consistently, your thinking ability declines to the equivalent of adding about eight years in age. Besides, as we know, your body needs time off from work. Think of the famous metaphor: you can't shoot an arrow without first pulling it back. .

    A. You must rest before you go again.

    B. You don't need to get anything done.

    C. The tools keep your mind in check and focus high.

    D. Highly productive people know when they're burning out.

    E. All highly productive people manage their time effectively.

    F. However, useful tools like Convert-Kit extend beyond Trello.

    G. To be a productive person, you need simple and practical steps.

It's called the Bank of Happiness, but it has nothing to do with money. Founded a year ago in Estonia's capital Tallinn, it's a forum in which more than 2,000 members from Estonia and other countries connect to offer or receive services free of charge.

The site carries more than 500 ads in English, German and Estonian from people offering or seeking all kinds of things, including teaching and tips on cooking. The website is also translated into French and Spanish.

Founder Airi Kivi says the goal is to make people think and act with their hearts. "After the worldwide outbreak of the pandemic, I thought, ‘Wow, our bank is perfect for the crisis and a lot of people are unemployed and they can use it to harvest what they need.'"

So how does it work? It's simple: You sign up using your real name and post what you are offering or what your need is, as long as it doesn't involve money or products.

Masseuse Terge Reintem says she signed up when she was unemployed because she needed to improve her skills by learning from others. But she stayed on even after finding a new job because she says it feels good to volunteer. "If I discover a new technique, I want my bank customers to first experience it," Reintem says, adding they are often nicer than the paying ones.

Member Veronika Davel says she infringed the rules with her first request when she asked for a product: a computer. But she did it unknowingly. Later, she began offering services of her own on the bank's website. "The main thing I really could offer was English," Davel explains. "There was a young girl who needed to have better English for her job and I gave her a hand."

The site has many more offers of help than requests for it. That's as it should be, Kivi says, adding that the bigger reward comes from giving.

(1)、How can the Bank of Happiness benefit its members?
