In the live-streaming (直播) channel of Yang Weiyun, no singing or dancing is performed nor are products sold. Yang teaches pinyin, reading and writing, something that has been most familiar to her for the past 50 years. The difference is her students are mostly adults.

The 73-year-old comes from Huainan city of Anhui province and is an experienced educator. She had been a Chinese teacher in an elementary school for 50 years. In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms gave her the idea of continuing her education attempt through live-streaming online. The retiree opened her live-streaming account in May 2021 and offered free pinyin courses designed for kindergarten pupils about to attend primary schools. However, she gradually learned among her viewers there are a lot of illiterate (文盲) adults.

Yang said she found many illiterate adults develop a sense of lack of confidence. They are afraid to go to new places, worried that they couldn't teach their children or read their boss's instructions. So, she added targeted content to meet their needs. "Many illiterate adults didn't have the chance to go to school when they were young. They are the ones in urgent need of becoming literate. I wanted to give them a new starting point," Yang said.

According to the seventh national census (人口普查) carried out last year, there are 38 million illiterate adults in China. Yang's live-streaming channel offers an easy and private way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy.

Yang said students learning through her live-streaming channel each have their own demands. So she always prepares her classes carefully after concluding a live-streaming session. She has tried her best to figure out what ways the students can learn and remember better, and her biggest wish now is to see these students graduate from her classes.

World Heritage sites in China

Ancient City of Ping Yao

Built more than 2,700 years ago, the Ancient City of Ping Yao is the best preserved ancient Han Chinese city. It gives insight into the ancient prosperous business pioneers, who established the first banks in China during Ming and Qing dynasties (14th-20th centuries). 

The city was listed as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 3, 1997. 

Classical Gardens of Suzhou

Suzhou, a city in East China's Jiangsu province, is famous for its classical gardens. Built between the Northern Song Dynasty and the late Qing Dynasty (11-19th century), the classical gardens of Suzhou feature miniature rocks, hills and elegant pavilions set amidst murmuring waters. The classical gardens of Suzhou were added onto the list on December 4, 1997.

Ancient Villages in southern Anhui—Xidi and Hongcun

Located in southern Anhui, Xidi and Hongcun belong to the category of architectural complexes, with a high historical and artistic value. 

The villages represent the architectural features of the Huizhou-style residential houses in the period of the Ming and Qing dynasties. 

Xidi and Hongcun were added onto the list on November 30, 2000. 

Fujian Tulou

Located in East China's Fujian province, the 46 multi-storey earthen houses were built on a base of stone for defense purposes. The architectural arts of the Fujian Tulou can be traced back nearly 1,000 years, and their design incorporates the tradition of feng shui. Tulou was added onto the list on July 6, 2008.

As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.

This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.

Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways(improve) our English writing ability.(compare) with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes less time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. If we persist (坚持) in this practice, gradually we'll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against many(difficult). Firstly, it often happens that we have trouble(find) appropriate(合适的、恰当的） words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there are many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is(extreme) hard for us to put them into English(proper).

The moon had gone behind a cloud and there weren't many stars in the sky. As I took a glance(一瞥) at my neighbour's house, I saw a flame(火焰)in his 1 . I thought he was having a midnight fast food so l went back to my bed.

Ways to Improve Your Health

Sometimes it may seem difficult to improve our health.

● Eat breakfast every morning.

Research shows that eating a meal in the morning results in less body fat and less chance of overeating. Eating breakfast can help people feel better both physically and mentally through the day.

● Get enough sleep.

Poor sleep can influence our memory and learning. Studies show that people who don't get enough sleep seem to get into more accidents. So stay safe and get enough sleep!

Walking is an easy way to add exercise to our lives. Instead of meeting friends for a meal, meet them for a walk. As you walk, you will see the beautiful world around you. Once you try, you will find that adding a walk into your daily life is very easy.

● Make social connections (联系).

 They might include sport teams, art or music groups. The people in the group can offer advice and can help each other in difficult times. Also, being in a group keeps your mind busy. An active mind is a healthy mind!

There are many ways to travel within a city. We can walk, cycle or take a bus. But no matter which way we travel, we have to follow the route the city planners made for us.

Parkour (跑酷) practitioners, however, see the city in a completely different way. To them, there are no fixed routes. There are no walls and no stairs — since they jump, climb, roll and crawl to move across, through, over and under anything that they find in their path. The city is their playground.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has noticed that this activity is attracting more and more people to it — there are 100,000 people taking part in parkour today in the UK alone, according to The Guardian — and how it is helpful for people to be much stronger: It trains coordination (协调) and balance. So, the organization is thinking about recognizing parkour as a new sport and adding it to the 2024 Olympics.

However, parkour practitioners themselves don't seem to be happy with the idea. They see parkour as "a lifestyle", wrote the website Next Sport Star. "It's a competition against the conditions rather than just a sport."

Indeed, many do parkour just to "escape the daily routine and experience the city in different ways", wrote reporter Oli Mould on The Conversation. They see parkour as a way to express themselves through relaxing moves and creative routes while freeing themselves from the pressure.

It's great that the FIG wants to develop a new sport and stay close to a new cultural form. But it would be greater if they knew that not everything in life is a competition.

When I was in middle school, I was on a family vacation in Washington DC. I found there was a homeless man down the street.

On our final day in the city, when my parents went for an evening walk, I went out of our hotel room and ran down the street to the homeless man.

He looked at me, surely not expecting anything from a middle school girl. I asked him what he wanted to have for dinner. He replied "Bread and water". I ran into the store and bought a big bag of bread and a bottle of water. I ran back with a smile on my face and handed the bag and the bottle to him. His smile has been in my mind ever since.

I came back to the hotel room and when my parents returned, my dad told me he had a story for me. He asked if I remembered the homeless man down the street from our hotel and I shyly nodded. He then told me a story. As they were returning from their walk, they saw the homeless man was sharing a bag full of food with other homeless people around. They were all smiling and laughing as they ate.

I smiled at my dad but I have never told him to this day the other half of the story. Till today, I still haven't forgotten that man's smile but I wish I had the courage to do this more often. One small kind action can begin a ripple effect(连锁反应)of kindness. So please，share a smile and do something kind for the people in need.

A bridge is a structure constructed to connect two places without blocking the way beneath it. Below are four famous bridges in the world. 

Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs is in Venice, Italy, which was designed by Antonio Contino. The bridge's construction was begun in 1600 and completed in 1603. The bridge was supposed to be the last view for prisoners, who would sigh at the beauty of Venice, before being taken to prison. That is why it is called the Bridge of Sighs.

Tsing Ma Bridge

The bridge is named after the two islands it connects-Ma Wan and Tsing Yi in Hong Kong. It has both a roadway and a railway and is the longest suspension bridge (悬索桥) with two decks. The bridge is 4518 feet long and 676 feet tall, which was designed by Mott MacDonald. The construction was begun in 1992 and completed in 1997. 

Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge is situated in London, which is a combination of the drawbridge (开合桥) and suspension bridge. Designed by Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry, it was built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge stretches across the River Thames near the Tower of London. The drawbridge is drawn about 1,000 times a year. 

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge joins the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, whose chief designer was Jbseph Strauss. The bridge has been named the most beautiful and most photographed bridge in the world. It is 8,981 feet long, 746 feet tall and 90 feet wide. Construction of the bridge was begun in 1933 and completed in 1937. In 1987, the bridge was named a California historic landmark.
