Nowadays mail delivery is a little different. I still get my mail from my mailbox. Nothing, but my neighbors' mail. I thought that was curious.

I proceeded to take my neighbors' mail to them. I was about to put the mail in their mailbox when a tall man came running out shouting about messing (弄乱) with his friend's mail. He snatched (夺过) the mail from my hand, opened the mailbox and pointed to the mail inside. "You were after this."

I got the knock on the door the next morning by two very polite officers. The annoyed tall man had phoned the police and told them I was a crazy old woman going around messing up everyone's mail. Before I could finish telling them about what was going on, the officers had watched a dog run to my mailbox with mail in his mouth. He took out the mail that was in my box and put letters in. He pushed the door closed with his nose, picked up the new pile of mail he had got from my box, and repeated this all the way down the next street. We all started laughing.

The dog had belonged to a mail carrier who had died. No one thought to check (the carrier lived alone) on the man's dog. The dog had been trained to put mail in and take mail out of the boxes. When he got loose, he "shouldered" his duties.

I went by to talk to the annoyed tall man to fill him in on what had happened. He was very pleased when he realized I was not a mail thief. He did, however, adopt (领养) the little guy.

When learning English, you probably have to memorize a lot of words. If you want to grow your vocabulary as fast as possible, a flashcard app like Quizlet is a great shortcut. With Quizlet, you can create a set of flashcards with new English words you are trying to learn, and practice typing them out until you know them by heart. It's a simple idea, but it's highly effective.

Spotify

Spotify is not a language learning app. But chances are that you already use it or a similar app for listening to music or podcasts (播客) and one of the effective ways to study is combining something you already use into your habits. If Spotify is already on your phone, you can subscribe to (订阅) some podcasts for English learners or download playlists of songs for learning English, or make your own.

Beelinguapp

Beelinguapp makes reading in English as convenient as possible. It shows you a text in your own language with the English translation side-by-side. Texts are short enough so that you can really dig into every word. They cover topics from fairytales, to science, to the latest news articles. There's even a "karaoke" where you can read along to audio, which helps you match up the English pronunciation with the English spellings.

Tandem

Tandem is a language exchange app which connects learners from all over the world. It can help you find a native English speaker who is trying to learn your native language, so you can swap language skills. If you only have five minutes to spare, you can simply exchange messages with a native English speaker. If you have more time, you can have a longer, digital "language exchange" by sharing voice notes, or using video chat. It's a great way to test your English skills out with real people.

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain—a fairly gentle 3,900-foot peak near where I live in Surrey, Columbia. I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the top. But I loved the challenge of conquering (征服) something bigger than myself. Soon I'd climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I'd finally found a hobby.

I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I'd met in a Face-book group. Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to climb 11, 240-foot Mount Hood.

Confident I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a crack, and a whole ice broke off the step, right under my foot.

I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything, but I was still sliding. After a few seconds, I came to a stop on a shallow. My clothes were worn, my helmet (头盔) was broken, and my face was bloodied from cuts and scratches (划伤).

After entering high school, you must wonder how to study well. Here are some good skills for you, which will be helpful to you.

Go to class.

If you want to do well at school, going to class is the first step in studying well. As a result, you'll miss what is the most likely to end up on the test. So if you want to study well, go to every class.

Take good notes.

Try not to write down everything. All you need is to put the main points in your own words. Write down unfamiliar terms.  You can fill in details that you missed and review the material while it is still fresh on your mind.

Talk to your teacher if you need help.

If you are struggling in class, talk to your teacher.  Most teachers have sympathy (同情) for students who just become worried about failing during the last few weeks of the grading period.

Take part in class discussions.

In order to learn more in class, it is helpful to take part in class discussions. Asking questions and having eye contact (交流) with your teachers and classmates can increase your participation (参与) and your focus during the class discussion. If the material is difficult, you'd better read it before class.

Get students together who want to do well in class. Make sure that everyone is familiar with the material because you do not want to spend time re-teaching material to people who do not understand it. Be careful! Sometimes group sessions can become chatting sessions.

My family would describe me as anything but a risk-taker. "Grandma drives faster than you!" my younger son likes to joke with me. So when I announced I was going to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for a self-defense course, my children, my husband, and even my mom were a bit doubtful.

A gym near my house was offering free two-hour classes including boxing, wrestling and judo (摔跤和柔道). I signed up for it and for the next days I questioned whether yoga would have been a wiser choice. The morning of the class, I pulled up to the gym, grabbed my water bottle along with a bit of courage I brought with me, and walked inside. We learned how to kick and knee someone where it counts and how to strike using the palms of our hands, After the instructor showed various escape techniques, I wondered what I was doing there. Seconds later, I reminded myself that I was on a search to push my boundaries (极限). By the time class ended, I was full of energy.

Before I entered the gym, I never imagined I would have the confidence and courage to throw a punch that could discourage someone twice my size. Almost two years later, I still attend classes. As the oldest female in the class, I push myself to keep up, try harder and, more importantly, not quit.

Between increasing my strength and feeling confident about protecting myself (although I hope I never have to test my skills outside of the gym), I'm proud of the risk I took in signing up for the course. I know that defending myself is not about strength; it's about strategy. At the same time, I'm calmer and less anxious—a benefit my family enjoys. As for my driving, after a recent lunch date, my mom suggested I speed up to at least the speed limit. She didn't want to be late for her tennis match.

"Shuan Q" is a meme (网络流行语) which can be used as a popular way to say "I'm speechless" with a matching emoji (表情包) attached behind. No-one can deny the power of the Internet. Some believe it makes language weaker, but some see a brighter side, believing it makes online communication easier between strangers.

An elementary school teacher in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, says that the evolution of Internet slang is not all fun and carefree. From his daily observations, he believes the "geographic boundary" between Internet slang and formal language is disappearing. On many occasions, the compositions he has received from pupils have been flooded with abbreviated slangs (网络梗).

During last year's Two Sessions, several representatives put forward proposals such as "regulating online language" and "banning vulgar (粗俗) words", specifically to address this issue, expressing the need to reduce online language misuse and strengthen the protection of Chinese.

However, many experts and scholars of linguistics and communication including Feng Zhiwei, disagree. Feng, believes that Internet language is a natural product of the dynamic development of language, and it is not necessary to ban it.

Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website BookCrossing.com turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.

Members go on the website and register (注册) the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.

Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, "The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both."

Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.

People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossing to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.

BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the "real" and not the virtual. The website now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-five countries.

Plastic garbage is a problem around the world. In Guatemala, in Central America, many towns have trouble collecting garbage. So large amounts of plastic garbage；so plenty of plastic garbage  (leave) in the streets. Susanne Heisse came up with  idea to help solve this problem.

Her idea was to help communities (社区)work together  (build) plastic-bottle schools. First, people collect plastic bottles, and then they fill the bottler with plastic garbage. By  (push) a large amount of garbage into the bottle, the bottle,  becomes strong, can then be used to make walls. In the end, an entire school can be built.

One group in Guatemala, Hug It Forward, first     (start) using this idea in its projects. Because plastic bottle schools are  (cheap) than the other schools built in the     (tradition) way, other groups have also started similar projects around the world.

Now, plastic-bottle schools can be found in (place) such as South Africa, Cambodia and the Philippines. Through such projects, garbage is turned  something useful.
