In our smartphone time, we tend to abandon a good book and play with our phones instead. But opening up a book could be a simple way to help maintain our mental health. And it may allow you to see that awkward situation you've been anxious about for long from someone else's view.

This fall, students at the University of Massachusetts found a new menu at their dining commons: the "diet for a cooler planet" menu. This meant herb-roasted lamb, raised with a carbon-friendly approach. It included sweet potatoes that had been picked from a local farm's field post-harvest. The options were plant-heavy, locally grown, and involved little to no packaging.

"We wanted to let students participate in climate action by making choices about their food, says Kathy Wicks, sustainability director for UMass Dining. The university is not alone in this effort. Increasingly, American consumers and institutions are thinking about how their food choices factor into climate change. For many, small choices at the grocery store, dining hall, and restaurant can feel more accessible than big-ticket options like buying a fuel-efficient car or installing home solar panels.

Small changes in dietary habits may make a big difference. Climate activists often target fossil fuels and transportation systems, but studies point to the food system as a significant contributor to global warming. Since September I've been living in a hall, just a stone's throw from the Thames. Campus is a25-minute walk from my hall, which is across the river and down Fleet Street. There, in The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), I take courses in social policy, philosophy and public policy, public management and behavioural economics.

In the first few weeks we covered how to measure well-being, how to distribute health care resources, and the origins of the welfare state, to name only a few. I've had great support from my academic adviser, who I was told is really somebody and highly respected in the field of social policy.

I learn loads of things each day and more importantly, what I learn feels relevant. As climate change quickly advances, many Middle Eastern countries aremaking the change from oil-based economies to ones that attract people fromaround the world—for travelling, business, work or to live.

One such example is NEOM to be built in Saudi Arabia. A key part ofNEOM is "The Line", a $725 billion futuristic city designed to house 9 millionpeople. It is a mirrored (镜子) wall-like building 200 meters wide and 500 meterstall. To be built in north-western Tabuk province, the project will spread 170kilometres from the Red Sea across deserts, mountains and valleys.

At first look, the project appears environmentally impressive. The city area isno more than 100 metres from any point in the city. A high-speed electric publictransport service makes sure every part of "The Line" is within 20 minutes away.Unluckily, as in many high-rise buildings with a large population inside, a vertical(垂直的) transportation would be needed, for it is just like a 125-floor building.

The project costs also seem OK at $55,000 per person. Let's say this isachievable in a country like Saudi Arabia and only covers infrastructure (基础设施). Even so, it remains to be seen how super-high-speed transport and mostadvanced infrastructure and services within the hugest building ever built can becost-effective.

The Line is planned for green living. Energy comes from renewable sources,waste water is reused, and it owns the latest "smart city"and mixed-use buildingtechnologies. Car ownership is avoided in favour of walking, cycling and publictransport.

However, the materials to be used and the building of such a big projectcould be very harmful to the environment. The plan says no one would be morethan two minutes from nature. But does this include the waiting times for a liftWithout careful design, a high dependence on vertical transportation may ruin thepleasure of walkable or bicycle-friendly areas.

A quick walk onto a frozen pond (池塘) could have been a disaster for thesetwo boys.

Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn't agree more. Were thebirds out on the ice ducks or geese? There was only one way to find out. So on a

cold January evening last year, the two friends walked onto the frozen pond neartheir homes to get a better look.

How can English be learned well? In my view, keeping up with teachers is agood way. Teachers are experienced and their plans are effective. But rememberto work in a way that suits you. It's important to learn from past mistakes as well.Keep a notebook to make a record of the mistakes you make - It'l help youavoid making the same ones later.

The school life may be hard, but you're not alone. You may be busy studying,but you can show your care by calling your friends or sending short messages.Don't let your friendships die.

It's as important to live well as it is to study well. Going to bed no later than11: 30 pm is important. It puts you in the right state for the next day. You needn'tfollow a special diet, but make sure you are eating healthy meals each day.

The person who plays well studies well. Having a lot of schoolwork doesn'tmean having to quit other activities. Playing basketball or having a talk with yourclassmates can relax yourself. Time out is not a waste of time but helps you studymore efficiently.
