While sweat serves as the built-in air conditioner, sweating it out can have many: other surprising health benefits.

    It Eases Pain

Did you wake up with back pain?  Then the best way to relieve your pain is to work up a sweat. It might be very tempting to skip this step since pain will make you want to sit still. But actually increasing your heart rate and working up a sweat is one of the best things you can do for your pain while sitting around will just make you even more stiff and sore.

    It Gets Rid of Toxins(毒素)

Our bodies are subject to a lot of toxins throughout our everyday lives. Sweating is a great way to expel (排出) those toxins from the body, which serves to better your immune system. It can also help get rid of substances like alcohol and salt.

Along with the sense of accomplishment from working out, working up a sweat releases endorphins (内啡肽), which make you happy. Sweating helps relieve stress and promote relaxation. Next time you're feeling stressed out or need a break to clear your mind, think about hitting up a hot yoga class or taking a few minutes for yourself in the sauna (桑拿) to ease your mind,

It Helps You Avoid Kidney Stones

One of the lesser-known benefits of sweating is that it lowers the risk of getting kidney (肾) stones. Research has shown that sweating helps you get rid of salt and keep calcium in your bones.  The more frequently you find yourself sweating, the better.

    A. It Makes You Happier

    B. Are you sore from yesterday's workout?

    C. Pain is usually caused by toxins produced in the body.

    D. Here are some top benefits of sweating in summer.

    E. Sweating also helps prevent pollutants from entering the body.

    F. This helps keep those elements from your kidneys where small stones will form.

    G. They come from the pollution in the air, our food, and are created naturally in the body.

Mosquitoes carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering to make the annoying insects into partners in the fight against the disease.

For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. "But that approach is temporary," says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, "Because mosquitoes are extremely tough little insects, and their populations can quickly rebound."

Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting warriors, which is a complete departure from traditional ways of controlling malaria.

To understand how it works, it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grows inside humans. It's passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. "If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease," he says. But making mosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a tough job.

To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes.

It turned out the malaria-fighting antibodies which gene-edited mosquitoes produced worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host.

James' team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be conducted on an island or in another isolated location.

But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. "There's no need to engineer a mosquito," says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that naturally occurring methods for reducing malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. "Why take unnecessary risks and release a species that can't be recalled once it's released into the wild?" she asks.

(1)、What can we know from the second and third paragraphs?

During the 1930s, the Great War broke out. A 25-year-old American soldier, probably never thought that his life would change forever when he volunteered to go to France.

One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Being stuck between two choices either its enemy or an animal, Suleyman found a five-year-old girl from the bushes shivering with cold and utmost fear. Due to the atrocity of the war, the girl was abandoned by her family and the whole village was killed.

During the war, it was impossible to find the child's family so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora which means like the flower. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.

For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage, the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.

For years, Suleyman always thought about Flora. When the French National Olympic Team was playing in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, Suleyman gazed through the audience on TV, hoping to catch a glimpse of Flora, but he never could.

At the age of 85, Suleyman attended the 60th anniversary reception of the Great War where Suleyman shared his story with American and French officials. After hearing his story, a French journalist started to investigate the story, and all government files were read in detail. The moment the journalist helped dial the number, in tears, Flora said Suleyman was her hero, and everything came flooding back to her.

(3)、What can we learn from the passage?
A、Suleyman found some enemies in the bush. B、Suleyman saw Flora again with the help of officials. C、Flora and Suleyman became attached to each other. D、Flora was sent to an orphanage when she was found.

I have been worrying for weeks now about what to give my mother for Mother's Day. For most people, this is a modest problem, solved by the purchase of a bathrobe or a box of candy. For me, however, Mother's Day represents an annual challenge to do the impossible—find a gift that will make neither Mama nor me feel terrible.

Expensive gifts which Mama defines as costing over $10 are out, because they make Mama feel terrible. "This is awful, " she once said, examining an apron. "I feel just terrible. You shouldn't have spent that much on it." Inexpensive presents - under $10—please Mama, but they make me feel terrible.

The story always goes this way: a gift given to Mama will bounce swiftly back to me. If I buy her something wearable, she perceives in an instant that it could be let in here, let out there, and it would fit me perfectly. If I give her a plant, she cuts off the top for me to take home and root in a glass of water. If I give her something edible, she wants me to stay for lunch and eat it.

Papa, a sensible man, long ago stopped trying to shop for Mama. Instead, on Mother's Day, her birthday, and other appropriate occasions, he composes a short romantic poem in which he tells of their meeting, unforgettable things, and marriage. After nearly 30 years of poems, Papa sometimes worries that the edge of his poetic inspiration has dulled, but Mama doesn't complain. She comes into the room while he is struggling over a gift poem and says, "It doesn't have to rhyme as long as it's from the heart."

This year, finally, I think I, too, have found a painless gift for Mama. I am going to give her a magazine article, unrhymed but from the heart, in which I wish her "Happy Mother's Day" and tell her there's nothing Papa or I could ever buy, find, or make her that would be half good enough anyway.

(1)、Why Mother's Day is regarded as an annual challenge by the author?
A、Most gifts are too expensive to afford. B、Her mother has never been pleased with gifts. C、She lacks the experience of choosing gifts. D、It's hard to buy a satisfying gift for her mother.
(2)、What can we know about the author's mother from paragraph 3?
A、She is particular about gifts. B、She doesn't like receiving gifts. C、She always cares about her child. D、She always gives something in return.
(3)、Which words can best describe the author's Dad?
A、Loving and wise. B、Energetic and kind. C、Brave and inspiring. D、Optimistic and talented.
(4)、Why will the author give her mother a magazine article?
A、To show her love for her mother. B、To show off her literary competence. C、To offer a better present than .her dad's. D、To avoid the difficulty of choosing

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty while my workmates were on night duty. On one shift, I sensed something strange just before going off duty at 1 1 am. I put down the tray (托盘) on the table and suddenly it fell off the table. At first, I didn't care as I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shaking and heard patients were screaming and running madly.

At that moment, I realized that an earthquake was happening. My first thought was to rescue my patient and protect myself. I quickly caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly frightened and pushed her under a bed. And then, I got under another bed myself. As soon as the earthquake stopped, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside. I carried her out and helped her down to the grassland, where several other people had gathered.

As I was afraid that my other workmates were in danger, I went back inside the building again. When I met Lucy, our head nurse, I found her patient couldn't walk. We made a seat for the patient by linking our hands and arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check if anyone was left behind in our sickroom.

Just then, we saw that a man doctor was calling for volunteers to go down to other sickrooms with him to help more patients and medical workers. So we followed him together. The doctor went ahead of us and found one of the nurses partially covered with broken stones, luckily still alive. Suddenly, the aftershock struck and the doctor ordered us to leave. The brave doctor intended to stay alone and risk his own life to save the nurse.

Reasons to Put on Your Rollerblades and Hit the Pavement

Rollerblading (旱冰) is great for building balance, strengthening muscles, and improving mental health. It's also a cheap, fun, and eco-friendly way to get your daily exercise in.

    It's fun

We all know that we should be exercising several times a week, and picking a workout that is fun naturally motivates us to get up and get going.  The top benefit of rollerblading is exercise in ways that are fun, soul-filling, and mental health-improving.

    It's cheap

Rollerblading is also a great exercise choice because it costs very little. There's no need to pay for a monthly gym membership or expensive equipment. Rollerblades cost a lot less than a bike.

    It's eco-friendly

Rollerblading is much faster than walking and can take you up to ten miles. Maybe that's why some Viennese citizens are choosing to use this sustainable (可持续) activity for their means of transportation.

Skater and climate activist, Gerhard Ladstatte explains why he started Friday Night Skating, a free street skating event. "We want to move without burning fuel." People looking for an oil-free way to get to a workplace that isn't too far from home, while combining daily exercise into their routine, can consider rollerblading to work.

It's good for your mental health

Like any form of aerobic exercise, skating is associated with a number of wellness benefits.  By fixing your attention on both the body and its surroundings, you can shift focus away from negative thought patterns and anxieties. Rollerblading can also increase self-confidence and positive feelings.

    A. In other words, rollerblading has it all.

    B. Exercise and fresh air can reduce stress.

    C. Not only is skating cheap, it also benefits nature.

    D. All you need is a pair of skates and some safety equipment.

    E. Rollerblading is an exciting way to get in fresh air and exercise.

    F. It's easy to see why so many people are discovering the joys of skating.

    G. Unlike a bicycle, you don't need to find a place to store your skates while you work.

Humans spend about one third of their lives sleeping. But some mammals (哺乳动物), like the northern elephant seal, survive with much less sleep.

Researchers in a new study described the unusual sleep pattern of these ocean animals. They found that when these mammals go to feed on trips that can last seven months, they sleep just two hours each day. Those two hours of sleep are made up of short moments of rest lasting only 10 minutes each as they dive deep to avoid predators (捕食者). The only other mammals known to get so little sleep are African elephants.

The researchers placed a head covered with sensors on the heads of the seals that they studied. The sensors recorded sleep signals created by the seals' brains and heart rate. The sensors also recorded the animals' location and depth beneath the sea.

The researchers studied female seals because they go out on long open-ocean trips while males feed in coastal waters.

During dives lasting about 30 minutes, the seals went into a deep sleep called slow-wave sleep while keeping a controlled downward movement. When they then experienced rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, the seals fell into a turning pattern. Then, at the deepest point of their sleeping dive—up to 377 meters deep—they wake up and swim back to the surface.

Terrie Williams is a scientist at the University of California at Santa Cruz who helped write the study. She said, "It is remarkable that a wild animal will fall into deep, paralytic REM sleep when there are predators on the hunt." She added that the seals solve this problem by going into deep sleep in the deep parts of the oceans where predators usually do not hunt them.

Williams said the brain's ability to control awakening the sleeping seals at a depth before they drown is also a discovery about how mammalian brains work. She commented on this saying that it shows the survival control of the seals' brains.

(1)、Why did researchers study female elephant seals?
A、They are easier to fix with sensors. B、They are more friendly to humans. C、They are more convenient to follow. D、They have a wider range of activities.
(2)、What are the elephant seals doing when they are in deep sleep?
A、Falling into deep sea. B、Swimming fast in the sea. C、Rushing back to the surface. D、Escaping from their hunters.
(3)、What's the advantage of elephant seals' sleep?
A、They hunt more foods. B、They avoid being hunted. C、They get completely relaxed. D、They control their sleep patterns.
(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A、Different Animals Need Different Sleep B、Elephant Seals' Short Sleep Makes Them Survive C、Elephant Seals Sleep Only Two Hours a Day D、Male and Female Elephant Seals Feed in Different Areas
