Alice is a student who came to my class last year. Though she has already turned 60, Alice looks so fit and1 with a bright smile and an enthusiastic attitude. I am Alice's teacher in class, but I feel she is my teacher in life.

As much as 80 percent of premature heart disease is preventable by making specific lifestyle choices. Some strategies, such as exercising and managing weight, are well known. But others may not have crossed your mind.  

Get eight hours of sleep. "When you're not rested, everything that happens in your life is a lot more stressful," says Dr. Arya Sharma, a professor of medicine at the University of Alberta. If we don't have enough sleep, our bodies also have more difficulty controlling blood pressure, inflammation and glucose levels. 

Engage in volunteer work.  Research published in Psychosomatic Medicine showed that a feeling of purpose in life is linked to a lower likelihood of heart attack and stroke. Depending on the type of work you do, volunteering might even increase your physical activity.

 Try to get your outdoor exercise far away from highways and industrial districts, and spend more time indoors when the air quality index is poor. As various studies show, even short periods of exposure are unhealthy for people who already have other cardiovascular (心血管的) risks, such as high blood pressure.

Laugh.  A 2016 study in the Journal of Epidemiology of more than 20,000 people over the age of 65 found a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease in those who reported laughing every day.

Atomic shapes are so simple that they can't be broken down any further. Mathematicians are trying to turn to artificial intelligence (AI) for help to build a periodic table of these shapes, hoping it will assist in finding yet-unknown atomic shapes.

Tom Coates at Imperial College London and his colleagues are working to classify atomic shapes known as Fano varieties, which are so simple that they can't be broken down into smaller components. Just as chemists arranged element s in the periodic table by their atomic weight and group to reveal new insights, the researchers hope that organizing these atomic shapes by their various properties will help in understanding them.

The team has given each atomic shape a sequence of numbers based on its features such as the number of holes it has or the extent to which it bends around itself. This acts as a bar code (条形码) to identify it. Coates and his colleagues have now created an AI that can predict certain properties of these shapes from their bar code numbers alone, with an accuracy of 98 percent.

The team member Alexander Kasprzyk at the University of Nottingham, UK, says that the AI has let the team organize atomic shapes in a way that begins to follow the periodic table, so that when you read from left to right, or up and down, there seem to be general patterns in the geometry (几何) of the shapes.

Graham Nib lo at the University of Southampton, UK, stresses that humans will still need to understand the results provided by AI and create proofs of these ideas. "AI has definitely got unbelievable abilities. But in the same way that telescopes (望远镜) don't put astronomers out of work, AI doesn't put mathematicians out of work," he says. "It just gives us new backing that allows us to explore parts of the mathematical landscape that are out of reach."

The team hopes to improve the model to the point where missing spaces in its periodic table could point to the existence of unknown shapes.

People who have trouble walking or moving around often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It's called Seatrac.

Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (坡道) that can carry a disabled person into the sea. It is operated by remote (远程的) control. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top the ramp.

Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. When one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair, the friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn't like having to be carried into the ocean. Mr Fotiou realized there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. Finnally, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell the systems.

The company worked hard to make the system simple enough to be put in place and easy to run. A wooden walkway allows wheerchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system uses solar (太阳能的) power. It doesn't require outside power, and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when the swimming season ends.

The Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cypris, Italy, and Latvia. TOBEA hopes to offer Seatrac in other countries. TOBEA has created a website showing where beaches with these special services can be found. The Greek govenment hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.

My generation—people born after 1990 —are accustomed to "all-in-platform" life, where we use mobile apps of different platforms to do almost everything in life.

For instance, I ordered a cup of coffee on Monday using an online delivery app. Then, I called a taxi by tapping on the app of a ride-booking service. Next, I bought some necessities on shopping platform Taobao. That done, I moved on to various other online destinations to get my daily fix of music, reading, social networking and so forth.

Platforms now play an increasingly important role in almost all aspects of day-to-day life, not just in economic and political processes. Consumption and social interaction are closely linked to platforms now.

But, I began to get confused recently. I thought I was being treated differently. My friend and I called a taxi at the same time on a ride-hailing platform (打车平台) and found that for the same destination, the prices were different. The price indicated on my phone was higher. One of the potential reasons could have been that I regularly use the ride-hailing platform and have a higher ranking while my friend doesn't use it that often. So, the ride-hailing platform offers discounts to newbies like her, to attract and have such customers.

China's latest efforts in regulating monopolistic (垄断的) or improper market behavior are of great significance in protecting consumers' lawful rights.

"The essence of platform-based monopoly (垄断) is that a large number of users are gathered on only a select few platform companies, leading to uneven data gathering different platforms. But in China some platforms use their own data and traffic (流量) to expand capital in a disorderly way," said Wang Yong, deputy director of the Institute of Economics at Tinghua University.

Data monopoly also brought another inconvenience for consumers--platforms block links to each other. For instance, link to We Chat Pay of Tencent is not available on Alibuba's Taobao while there is no Alipay link on JD app's payment options.

"More efforts should also be made to strike a good balance between personal information protection and interconnection between platforms. Companies are being encouraged to further develop data safety technology so that the data are available but not visible."

It was founded during the French Revolution to show its advanced science and technologies and has since received constant updates. Early planes, including the first to cross the English Channel, hang from the ceiling of one building. The collection has a huge range, with antique cars, early engines and elements (元素) used in the construction of the Statue of Liberty.

Museum of Magic

Each visit to this museum begins with a short performance of simple tricks, followed by a guided tour of the magic tools and objects on display in those 16th-century basements. This tour currently takes place in French, so English-speaking visitors may want to explore on their own with the help of English-language guidebooks available at the entrance.
