How to Tell Truth from Lies

Figuring out if something is true or false is a tough task in communication. That's why many people worry about being tricked easily. "My friends say I'm too naive," a reader told me. "How can I stop being so easily fooled?"

I can't help but wonder if our reader's friends are being a little too strict. When we try to tell if someone is lying, we're usually just guessing.

During face-to-face talks, we often depend too much on body language, facial expressions, and the way people speak. This makes us think we're better at spotting lies than we really are.

Lies take effort to make up, and words can show that. Researcher Aldert found that liars use fewer details than those telling the truth. They talk about fewer problems or small differences, and give fewer ways to check their stories.

Still, we shouldn't become too doubtful. A study by Sarah Ying Zheng showed that people who lie a lot often doubt others the most. This "self-projection" makes it hard for them to understand why others do things.

Surprisingly, the most trusting people can also be the least easily fooled. In 2010, researchers asked people how much they believed in human kindness. Then, the volunteers watched videos of people telling truths or lies. The less trusting people were worse at telling who was lying and who was telling the truth.

No one wants to be made a fool of. While it's good to be a bit doubtful, it's often okay to trust people until we have a reason not to.

    A. Instead, we should focus more on what people say.

    B. However, experts suggest trusting your first impression.

    C. This is especially a problem for people who lie themselves.

    D. But these things aren't good signs to tell if someone is lying.

    E. Their lack of trust made them bad at judging people in general.

    F. Countless people believe they can easily detect lies through senses.

    G. Many studies have shown that most of us aren't good at finding out lies.

  • 6、On January 22, international researchers shared a significant finding in the scientific journal Nature. They discovered bursts of energy in an unexpected part of space, which they named "chorus waves". These waves got their name because they vibrate (震动) at the same rates as the sounds we can hear. When changed into hearable signals, they sound just like birds chirping (鸣叫) cheerfully.

Scientists have been aware of chorus waves in space for years. However, the latest study brought a big surprise. The researchers found that these waves exist as far as 100,000 kilometers away from Earth. This is the greatest distance at which chorus waves have ever been detected from a planet.

Chengming Liu, a study writer from Beihang University, stated in an email, "Chorus waves are one of the strongest and most significant waves in space." Allison Jaynes, a space physicist not participating in this study, commented, "This opens up a lot of new questions about the physics that could be possible in this area."

The newfound chorus waves were detected in an area where Earth's magnetic (磁的) field extends. Scientists didn't expect to find them there. Now, they're eager to figure out how these unique waves form. Jaynes added, "We surely need to find more of these events."

Scientists still are not sure how chorus waves develop, but they believe Earth's magnetic field is related to it. In the past, radio antennas (天线) detected chorus waves. For example, in the 1960s, an Antarctic research station picked them up. NASA's Van Allen Probes also heard the chirping sounds, but from a closer distance. The most recent chorus waves were detected by NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale satellites, which were sent into space in 2015 to study Earth and the sun's magnetic fields.

Chorus waves have also been found near other planets including Jupiter and Saturn. The waves can produce high-energy electrons. That means they can be a danger to satellite communications. The researchers said their findings suggest that chorus waves might be found everywhere in the magnetic fields of planets.

(1)、What makes chorus waves get their name?
A、The place where they are first discovered. B、Their vibration rates like hearable sounds. C、The way they affect satellite signals. D、Their movement speed in space.
(2)、What can be inferred from the scientists' comments?
A、Further research is crucial. B、Wave creation is clear. C、Discoveries lack importance. D、Waves pose satellite risks.

A、NASA's Van Allen Probes. B、Scientists from Beihang University. C、An Antarctic research station in the 1960s. D、NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale satellites.
(4)、Which is the best title for the text?
A、The Naming Story of Chorus Waves B、Chorus Waves: A New Threat to Satellites C、Revealing the Mysteries of Chorus Waves D、Scientists' Great Debate on Chorus Waves
  • 7、For many, Chinese characters seem like complex symbols. However, Lena, a 20-year-old American college student, views them in a unique way. To her, each character has its own story. She pictures "ren" (person) as a cat's face, and "ceng" (once) as an angry robot.

Lena gained popularity when she spent only 30 minutes drawing "ceng" and posted it on Xiaohongshu. Amazingly, this simple drawing got 40,000 likes overnight. Now, her creative artworks raise discussions about language, art, and cultural exchange.

Growing up in a diverse community with many Asians, Lena was surrounded by different languages and cultures. "As a child, I had Chinese friends. I was fascinated by seeing their names on lunch boxes. This language was so new to me, completely different from Western languages," Lena remembered. This early curiosity remained with her and reappeared in college during a US-China relations course, which deepened her interest in modern Chinese culture.

Deep in Xiaohongshu, Lena noticed more characters that looked like various objects. She describes herself as imaginative and highly perceptive, often spotting details others miss.

Besides drawing, Lena translates all her posts into Chinese to show respect to her followers. Her efforts have helped her make Chinese friends online, chatting about daily life and food. Some followers said Lena understands the beauty of Chinese characters better than many Chinese. "It's because you're used to them," Lena replied, adding the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from Chinese friends that "orz" looks like a person bowing in apology, but it means nothing in English. "It's something I never thought of. That's the result of a non-native looking at unfamiliar characters," she said.

As Lena plans to share more character-inspired art on Xiaohongshu, her story shows a truth: language is more than words; it's about connection and understanding the world from others' perspectives.

(1)、How did Lena become popular on Xiaohongshu?
A、By sharing her daily life in China. B、By translating English articles into Chinese. C、By having online chats with Chinese netizens. D、By posting creative drawings of Chinese characters.
(2)、What deepened Lena's interest in modern Chinese culture?
    A、Her Chinese friends. B、A US-China relations course. C、Using Xiaohongshu. D、Drawing Chinese characters.
(3)、Why did Lena mention the example "orz"?
A、To explain learning difficulty. B、To prove followers' over-praise. C、To show non-natives' unique views. D、To analyze grammar differences.
(4)、What is the main idea of the passage?
A、Lena gains popularity on Xiaohongshu. B、Diverse background fuels Lena's interest. C、Chinese characters: more than simple symbols. D、Creative characters bridge language and culture.

  • 13、Life is busy. We're always expected to be productive and engaged, whether that's with parenting, housework, or work. While taking time for small rewards (奖励) can feel 1ike a luxury, the truth is that it is necessary for improving our mental health. A key psychological idea behind this is the Premack Principle, which explains why treating (款待) ourselves is more than a tendency, it's a way to improve our daily lives.

In the 1960s, American psychologist David Premack developed a theory now known as Premack Principle. He explained that doing something you're more likely to do can be a reward for doing something you don't actually want to do. For instance, if you finish a task you're not interested in, like cleaning the bathroom, you can treat yourself to something you like, such as watching an episode of your favorite TV show. This way takes advantage of our natural need for fun to help us get through tasks we might not enjoy.

Recent studies keep showing that giving yourself rewards can help improve your work and happiness. For example, Woolley and Fishbach discovered that getting rewards right away can make you more motivated because it links the reward directly with the task. What's interesting is that it's not about how big the reward is but how quickly you get it that matters. Another study by Landry and others found it's not the reward itself but rather how the reward makes people feel that helps them do their best. This makes sense because rewards increase our dopamine (多巴胺) levels, which plays a key role in how our brains feel pleasure.

The idea of "giving ourselves little treats" is not just about enjoying something; it's proof of how positive reinforcement can change our behavior and make us feel better mentally. By carefully using the Premack Principle and rewarding ourselves, we can find more motivation to face challenges and lead a happier life. It's okay to recognize and celebrate our efforts, big or small. So, go ahead, give yourself that little treat. You've earned it.

    (1)、What is the Premack Principle?
A、A tool to work out a plan. B、A way to complete tasks quickly. C、A means to make boring life enjoyable. D、A theory to explain how rewards improve happiness.
(2)、What makes people more motivated according to Woolley and Fishbach?
A、Gaining big rewards. B、Finishing tasks quickly. C、Increasing dopamine levels. D、Getting rewards immediately.
(3)、What might be a "positive reinforcement" according to paragraph 4?
    A、A big challenge. B、A school clean-up. C、A good meal. D、A difficult exam.
(4)、What is the most suitable title for the text?
A、The Dopamine of Our Brains B、The Premack Principle for Life C、The Motivation to Face Challenge D、The Importance of Mental Health
  • 14、When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents (口音), most of them proudly replied, "Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese." But this kind of reply misses the point.

Usually, what we mean when we say someone "has an accent" is that their accent is different from the local one, or that their pronunciations are different from our own. But this understanding of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that decide our accents. Even if you don't hear it yourself, you speak with some kind of accent. In this sense, it's pointless to point out that someone "has an accent". We all do!

Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, "You got eat or not?" (meaning "Have you eaten?") is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to stop for a while doesn't mean that Singapore Oral English is "wrong" or "ungrammatical". The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers' solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it's different?

We need to move beyond a narrow understanding of accents and dialects — for the good of everyone. Lаnguаgе diffеrеnсеѕ lіkе thеѕе рrоvіdе іnѕіghtѕ (深刻见解) іntо реорlе'ѕ сulturаl ехреrіеnсеѕ аnd backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of who they are. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We would learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.

(1)、What does the author think of some friends' reply in paragraph 1?
A、It is not polite. B、It shows their language levels. C、It shows their self-confidence. D、It misses the real meaning of accents.
(2)、Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?
A、To prove dialects are acceptable. B、To correct a grammatical mistake. C、To show different kinds of English. D、To encourage more changes to languages.
(3)、What's the author's attitude to language differences?
    A、Negative. B、Positive. C、Doubtful. D、Unclear.
    (4)、What's the text mainly about?
A、Standard English is at risk. B、Accents tell everything about you. C、Everyone has an accent. D、Dialects lead to misunderstanding.
  • 15、You might have thought that the world's longest-serving lifeguard would be found on a sunny beach in California or Australia. But on a rainy British spring day, the Guinness World Records people held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset spot when he was 16, meaning he has been coming to the aid of users of the sandy beaches here for 58 years. "It's the best job in the world," he said. "You're working on the beach, which I love, and you're helping people. What could be better?"

Lewis said friends used to rib him that his colleagues in Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were half his age. "Now they say they're a third my age." he said. But he is still keeping fit. RNLI lifeguards must complete a 400-metre pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25-metre pool swim underwater, a 25-metre surface swim continuously in under 50 seconds and run 200 metres along the beach in under 40 seconds. The swimming fitness tests are still reasonably easy for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month with no wetsuit (防寒泳衣).

Lewis had ever suffered anxiety and depression. But he believes his training and the time spent on the beach relieved this. He now helps to train young lifeguards. Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is better than carrying out exciting rescues. "I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody."

(1)、Why does Lewis consider his job the best?
A、It enables him to get an award. B、It matches his interests and values. C、It allows him to work at an old age. D、It wins him the beach goers' respect.
(2)、What does the underlined word "rib" probably mean?
    A、Laugh at. B、Care about. C、Look after. D、Depend on.
(3)、What's the purpose of listing the numbers in paragraph 2?
A、To test Lewis' performance. B、To tell lifeguards' safety risks. C、To show Lewis' physical health. D、To show the danger of training.
(4)、Which of the following word can best describe Lewis?
    A、Humorous. B、Creative. C、Adventurous. D、Helpful.

The senior year of high school was very busy for almost every student, and I was no exception. If I wasn't studying and worrying about my grades, I would take part in various after-class activities to make preparations for college.

Finally, as my senior year began to wind down, I got a part-time job at a café near my school. I had thought that the job would be easy and, for the most part, stress-free. I imagined myself pouring excellent coffee, making delicious cakes and becoming close friends with the regular customers.

What I hadn't counted on were the people with great orders that chose to use the drive-through window, or the women who felt that the coffee was much too creamy, or the men that wanted their iced coffee to be remade again and again until it reached a certain level of perfection. There were moments when I was annoyed with humans as a whole, simply because I couldn't seem to please anyone. Nevertheless, I kept at it.

On a rainy day, I spent my afternoon handing customers' orders and waiting as they slowly counted their pennies. I tried to smile as the customers complained about the rain, but it was difficult to smile as they sat in their temperature-controlled cars with the windows rolled up while I dealt with huge drops of water hanging from my visor (帽舌). On top of that, no one was tipping. Every time I looked into my nearly empty tip jar, I grew more frustrated.

Around four o'clock, one of my regular customers named Lucas came in looking depressed and defeated. My co-worker and I asked what the problem was and if we could help, but he wouldn't tell any details. He just said he felt like crawling (爬) into bed, pulling the sheets up over his head and staying there for a few years. I knew exactly how he felt.

    Paragraph I:

I decided to do something to lighten his mood.

Around seven o'clock the next evening, Lucas drove up to the window.
