Every year,at the end of October,tens of thousands of people flock to a Buddhist temple in China to see a huge gingko biloba tree(银杏树) drop its foliage(枝叶) and turn temple from green to gold.The Gu Guanyin Buddhist Temple,(locate) in the Zhongnan Mountains of China's Shaanxi Province,is home a 1,400-year-old gingko biloba tree.It was said that it was planted by the Tang Dynasty(618-907) emperor Li Shimin,4 is one of the greatest(rule) in Chinese history.It towers superbly over the temple,and for a few days every autumn,it rains down a gold carpet of (leaf),which stands out against the muted tones of the season.Because of its(strike) appearance,it has been called the world's most beautiful gingko biloba tree,and(become) a tourist attraction in its own right.

Due to the increasing(popular) of its ancient gingko biloba tree,the Gu Guanyin Buddhist Temple has been reported to have increased(day) visitor capacity to around 7200,between 8 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon.

For the past 60 years,the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has protected animals,restored lost habitats and advocated for policy changes that benefit wildlife.Now,the conservation organization is trying a new approach.

This year,AWF launched the inaugural Benjamin Mkapa African Wildlife Photography Awards.The contest aims to reach a different audience.While photography competitions are nothing new,AWF hopes that the exhibition of winning entries will encourage African people to take a more active role in conservation.Its CEO Kaddu Sebunya said,"Africans need to take responsibility for the conservation of their heritage."

Photographers of all ages and backgrounds,professional and amateur,were invited to submit to the competition.A judging panel,comprised of photographers,conservationists,activists and safari guides,selected photos from 12 categories including "Art in Nature" "Coexistence and Conflict" and "Conservation Heroes".

 The "Conservation Heroes" category had special appeal for Kenyan conservation photographer Anthony Ochieng Onyango."I realized there was a communication gap because most of what was being communicated was data in scientific publications," said Onyango,adding that images are a simple way for people to connect to complex issues.

While there were many entries in the AWF competition,there's only one 19-year-old Cathan Moore from South Africa among the category winners.There's a lack of opportunity for young aspiring photographers on the continent.AWF is seeking grants and partnerships to enable more African people to participate next year,and to make nature photography competitions more accessible to those unable to pay or buy expensive camera equipment,allowing people to use whatever camera they have and photograph wildlife in urban environments.

Sebunya hopes that the competition can open up a dialogue about conservation and why it's so important for Africa's future.Many people in Africa look at conservation as a thing done by and for foreigners,said Sebunya.While he praised the work of international NGOs,he emphasized that it's vital that African voices are heard and for local people to lead conservation efforts.

Charles Darwin was a very famous scientist who lived in the 1800s.His ideas about evolution completely changed the way scientists understand the natural world.He recorded his ideas in notebooks marked with letters of the alphabet(字母表),which have been considered extremely important for showing how he developed the evolution.

The Cambridge University Library had several of Mr.Darwin's notebooks.The two that were missing were kept in a small box,and were last seen in 2000.In 2001,someone noticed that the box was missing.Luckily,the library had taken pictures of the notebooks' pages,so the information wasn't completely lost.

In 2020,the library made a huge effort to find the books.Workers searched through the 10 million books and other things in the library,but they didn't find the notebooks.Finally,the library asked people around the world to help look for the books.They officially reported the missing notebooks as stolen so that the police around the world would search for them.

Nobody could ever have expected the way in which the notebooks were returned recently:in a pink gift bag with a note that said "Librarian,Happy Easter,X".People at the library quickly recognized the blue box that the notebooks had been stored in.Inside a brown envelope they found the two missing notebooks,tightly wrapped in plastic.After the police had examined the package,library workers were able to open and carefully study the notebooks.They were pleased to learn that the notebooks were in good shape.They hadn't been damaged and they weren't missing any pages.

The timing of the return is perfect.The library was planning a show called "Darwin in Conversation",which is set to open in July.Now the missing notebooks can be part of that show.
