My daughter and I collected the empty cans and bottles in our home this morning. We had six full garbage bags later so I knew we would be spending a bit more time at the recycling centre. When we got there, a man and his kids were also doing the morning recycling and were using two of the four machines to recycle their plastic and cans. Luckily, we were able to use the two remaining machines.

Of course, there were others that came, but when they saw the two families with garbage bags full of recycled things, they quickly left. However, one woman came in with just five cans and looked as if she was in a hurry. So I stopped what I was doing and let her in to recycle her cans. Of course, she was grateful, and it felt good to let her go ahead of me. But that was not the whole story.

My daughter and I continued to work through the bags, but the plastic recycling machine stopped working because it was full. My daughter was left with nothing to do. The other family was still using the other two plastic recycling machines, but it seemed that they were almost done. I just told my daughter we would have to wait until they were done. But the man of the other family came through with another act of kindness. He offered to let us go ahead of him. I was really surprised, because we had more than five bottles, but he didn't seem to mind. I happily accepted it.

It was great to give and then to get an act of kindness in turn. It was small. I didn't expect it, but it surely brightened up my day.

Activities to Get You Outdoors While Travelling

Horseback Riding

On the path or the road, spending time on a bike allows you to slow down and leisurely take in the scenery around you. Mountain biking can give you the biggest excitement, while road cycling may offer a more peaceful and calming experience. Travel with your bike or rent one at your travelling places, and your possibilities for exploration have already increased.

Rock Climbing

For a more physical and challenging experience outdoors, try your hand at rock climbing. You can get a feel for climbing in a gym, but its real rewards lie in putting those skills to use outside. Many popular travel places have great climbing within one-day trip distance.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, "A fight! Let's go and see!"

"No," said Henry. "Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(干涉) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."

During China's dynastic period, emperors planned the city of Beijing arranged the residential areas according to social classes. The term "hutong", (original) meaning "water well" in Mongolian, appeared first during the Yuan Dynasty.

 They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team's performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn't evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team's performance.

To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions.  In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team's performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, "There is no I in TEAM."  .

Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.

A 24-year-old woman who lost her leg due to cancer has proudly shared a raw photograph of herself without the prosthetic(假体的) leg on in an effort to promote body positivity.

Jessica Quinn, from New Zealand, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma—a rare form of bone cancer at the age of nine and eventually she had her leg amputated(截肢) to stop the disease from spreading.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, the brave woman said she got up the courage to share the powerful picture publicly for the first time. Following a 14-hour surgery to remove her leg during her childhood, the cancer survivor started struggling with her body image because she was "forever stuck with it". She used to cover up her leg by avoiding wearing anything shorter than her knees.

"It took me 10 years to really start showing people what I looked like without my leg on. Now I don't like feeling weak though I know people will be supportive," she said.

"The challenges sometimes feel endless. But they remind me how lucky I am to have two feet planted on the floor."

Jessica also explained how social media has helped her gain self-confidence and the platform even shaped her into the person she is today.

"I know people often speak about social media in a negative light yet it's helped me grow. Simply just seeing the response and love I get when I share things like this and then seeing how it can help others is so heart-warming."

"If I can make someone feel beautiful in their own skin then I'll take every chance I can get."

Her social media post has since attracted more than 9,000 "likes" after sharing the post on Thursday evening. "The reaction has been extraordinary," Jessica said. "I get a flood of comments and I read every single one of them which brought tears to my eyes. Meanwhile, I'm always blown away by the support and love I get."

Nothing could stop dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.

And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure. The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.

As the vegetables started coming in, dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜). Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, dad turned off the stove. The pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought dad's piles of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.

Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it? The neighbours came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!

Determined, dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didn't look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn't offend the nose so much, either. I took a taste. It would never win a prize in a cooking competition, but it was surprisingly edible, and we drank up every last drop of the soup!

When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow, London on a gray January morning. Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me. Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place. Until I made a discovery.

Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames,is the centre of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing. I loved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favourite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don't worry about it. Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam(横杆), I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting: "Safe! Safe! Safe!" And that's what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater. 

When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming. Within a couple of years, I'd given it up.

When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there. I've travelled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear; tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters. Weaving(穿梭) among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my way to the beam. Then a rail-thin teenager, in a baggy white T-shirt, skidded(滑) up to the beam. He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him. But soon I caught a few of his glances. "I was a local here 20 years ago," I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head. "Safe, man. Safe."

"Yeah," I said. "Safe."

As I walked into the primary school, I looked down at my new black shoes—I wanted to be anywhere in the world but this school.

I stood at the classroom door. Before I tried to escape, the door suddenly opened to the sweet voice of Mrs Blackstone, my new teacher.

"We've been waiting for you!" she said gently. With a smile my mum walked away and I was left standing in front of a group of students. Over the next few days, Mrs Blackstone made it her job to find me a new friend.

One spring afternoon, Mrs Blackstone asked me to stay after class. "I'd like to speak with you, Amanda," she said. My mind raced. Had I got bad grades? Had I hurt someone's feelings?

"Are you enjoying your new school?" she asked, sitting comfortably behind her desk. "I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else." With her eyebrows raised she continued, "I see something special in you—the way you communicate with others, the kindness you show. I think you have the great potential to be something very important."

I listened attentively to every word.

"I've been a teacher for over twenty-five years; I can see it. But first you have to believe in yourself. That's very important. Remember that and you'll go far," she said. Then she hugged me and said, "See you tomorrow."

Her sweet voice was music to my ears that day. I walked out of her class, not staring at my shoes, but looking straight ahead with my head high. My teacher saw something special in me!

It was late spring when my mum and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with mum. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mum pulled over. "What are you doing?" I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and that we'd be stuck there, so far from home. Fortunately, that wasn't the case. My mum hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. "It'll just be a minute," she called back through the open windows.

Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mum reappeared empty-handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, "Do you know anyone there?" She shook her head. "Then what did you do with the flowers?" She smiled slightly, "I gave them to the receptionist(接待员)." "What?" She laughed at my confusion. "I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven't received any."

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, "Did you leave your name?" To this she answered instantly, "No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough for me."

Suddenly, still thinking about mum's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mum nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.

Chinese classical poetry is Chinese traditional poetry (write) in classical Chinese and featured by certain traditional forms. Many poems come from particular historical periods, such as the poetry of the Tang Dynasty. Its existence (date) back to at least as early as the publication of the Classic of Poetry or Shi Jing. (variety) combinations of forms and genres exist. Many or most of these (appear) at the end of the Tang Dynasty. 

Use and development of Chinese classical poetry (active) continued up to the year of 1919, the May Fourth Movement took place, and it is still developing even today. Poetry created during this 2,500-year period of more or less continuous development shows a great deal of (diverse)—classified by both major historical periods by dynastic periods. 

 Of the key (aspect) of Chinese classical poetry, another is its close relationship with other forms of Chinese art, such as Chinese painting and Chinese calligraphy. Chinese classical poetry has proven to have a strong influence poetry worldwide. 

On her 71st birthday in July, Sajean Geer went to spread her husband's ashes near Obstruction Point, inside Olympic National Park.

When she finished, she realised she had got 1 . Geer became worried. Though an experienced hiker, she wasn't prepared to be in the park for such a(n) 2 period of time. She only had her 3 

with her. She had a cellphone, but there is no signal. And worst of all, she hadn't told anyone where she was going because she hadn't 4 to be gone for long.

Large meals make people full and sleepy.  We want our children to learn, not falling asleep at their desks, so let's keep those lunches on the lighter side. You can do this if you provide them with a good breakfast.

By working beside your children and discussing what they eat for lunch, you are helping them understand the importance of whole foods and the avoidance of junk foods.  As they get older, these good habits will stay with them. They will learn that these types of food are beneficial to them. Try to let them see that the food choices they are making will help them feel so much better.

 I know of one family that actually had the food pyramid on the wall of their kitchen and it helped their children pick out what foods they wanted. Everyone got a chance to decide what to eat, but they had to pick protein, vegetables and fruit. Besides, the mother had a book with recipes for healthy foods. All of the recipes had pictures of what the food looked like. .

Unlike today, when we grew up we played outside, rode our bikes, ran around, and the list goes on and on.  So apart from the above healthy eating choices, you need to plan some activities for your children today other than the television or video games.

Perhaps, it is not a new idea that a great work can be created by combining paintings and poems. In this case, we can unite both things in two ways. The first way is to make the poem as the main inspiration for the painting. It is also possible to write a poem after looking at a painting.

What about the next idea to combine painting and poetry? Well, we can combine both of them on a canvas(画布). You can paint an oil painting on it and then write down the poem on that canvas. I do not know whether this kind of idea has been used for years. But this is quite a great new idea for me. It will make more people love painting and poetry at the same time. You will not need to read the poem on plain white paper any more.

A poem is a good way to represent a story or a thought. It is usually not too long and not easy to understand literally(字面上地). It is a series of words arranged in stanzas(诗节) and lines with rhymes, which are quite changeable. Therefore, combining it with another type of art (such as painting) will be very good. You can get the message of the poem through the colours on the canvas. All you need to do is use your creativity to make a painting with the right colours and with great words on it.

A tiny Alaska village has experienced a boom in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.

More than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaska village of Kaktovik in 2018 to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf, more bears are remaining on land to look for food.

Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but villagers started noticing a change in the mid-1990s. More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing number of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s. As more attention was given to the plight of polar bears about a decade ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.

 "The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011," said Jennifer Reed, of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. "Today we're talking about hundreds and hundreds of visitors, many from around the world each year," Reed said. Most tourists visit in autumn, when bears are forced towards land because sea ice is farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who sometimes offers wildlife-viewing tours, said, "I've been offering polar bear tours since 2004." Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels. The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development.

 German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash(废物) to make sculptures. "We are living in the time of garbage," says Schult. "I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves." Here, Schult was talking about his 1,000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

"They are social sculptures," he explains. "They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sculptures to spread the idea that we live in the time of garbage." So far, Schult's social sculptures have been on show in Paris, in Moscow's Red Square, on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo.

 HA Schult's work is unforgettable. Although his work has had a big influence on the art world, Schult remains modest about his creations. "Artists have to learn every time. We are not important. All that counts is the time in which we are living."

 Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when working with trash. Why can't common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them into some form of personal art? Maybe it's because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn't, or whom artists are or should be.

 You can be an artist like Schult if you try. Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them? Imagine them in any number of new uses, or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or clothing? Boxes can usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing? Imagine taking old clothes and turning them into hats or hanging organisers.

Camp Odayin provides fun, safe and supportive camp experiences and community building opportunities for young people and their families this year.

Winter Camp February 15th-February 17th

It is hosted in Amery, a two-hour drive from the Twin Cities and free round trip transportation is provided from Minneapolis and Madison. This camp is for children who have attended Residential Camp or Day Camp before. Campers can experience snowshoeing, skiing and snowboarding. Registration is processed during December & January.

Mums Retreat May 16th-May 17th

Scheduled in downtown Stillwater, Mums Retreat will seek to improve the quality of carers' life. It will include meals, boarding and yoga activities.

Registration will open in April for mums who receive the email invitation from Camp Odayin. If the limit is reached, we will start a wait list.

Residential Camp July 13th-July 18th

Campers will have a chance to communicate with other young people sharing the same grade. Hosted in Lutherdale, it will include swimming, horseback riding and talent shows. The approval by the Camp Odayin director is necessary.

Registration will open in early March and is due on May 1st.

Family Camp October 26th-November 1st

Hosted in Camp Lake, the camp is a two-night commitment for families with children suffering from heart disease, who will benefit from connecting with other families that have similar health, emotional and social concerns. Activities will include drawing, fancy dress balls and movies.

Families that have a child in 12th grade or younger(no minimum age) can attend. Camper registration is available online in late August.
