Is a moviegoer different than a movie-lover?Id say so. You can love a movie by watching it at home. . I've spent a lot of time talking to people about movies. By listening to what they say, I can report they only share one thing in common:they go out. 

I've thought about two views of the moviegoer lately. 

The first view comes from Roland Barthes. Most often, his moviegoers don't go to the movies for a distinct purpose.  . They are bored. Once they get inside, they can't help but sink into a relaxed state. When they leave the movie theater, these moviegoers don't want to talk to anyone about the movie.  . Barthes sees them as a lonely being, one who is introspective(自省的). I think some of us use movie theaters to retreat inside ourselves. The second view comes from the Clark Theater manager, Bruce Trinz. When people go to the movies they go for a certain personal motive. They may want to forget something, or escape from the lives they are leading. Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago.  , they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like movies. The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word hopeless.  , but they come to the movies filled with hope. They may not be able to define what they hope to experience, but they will know it when they feel it.

As retailers see shoppers turning to little luxuries, they're offering more and more of them. Target, for example, has staked a flag in what they refer to as"affordable joy", which includes a select ion of self-care and cosmetic products, along with wellness-centric beauty products. Beyond diversifying their offerings, stores are also bringing in luxury-feeling products at lower price points to appeal to more consumers. 

Ethan says not every shopper will shift their spending to little luxuries—but even those who are still longing for the"must-haves"of social media will also look to get a deal. They want the feeling of purchasing lower-priced affordable treats. To get these goods, shoppers are likely to tap into the re-sale market for designer items at a more reasonable price. They want things that make them feel good about themselves—they just want to do it without breaking the bank. 

If the benefits of physical activity were made into a pill, everyone would be on it. Studies show that moving improves nearly every aspect of health:boosting sleep, strength, and mental well-being. Still, most people don't exercise nearly enough. According to data published in 2023, less than a third of U. S. adults get the government-recommended amount of physical activity in their free time:at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per day, plus a couple of muscle-strengthening sessions each week. 

Why is it so tough to get people to do something so good for them?Physical limitations, health problems and modern life are certainly factors for many people. But research suggests there's another factor:our brains don't want us to exercise. For most of human existence, people had to be physically active to carry out the basic functions of ife, such as finding food. Humans evolved(进化)to tolerate a high level of activity—but also to conserve energy for when movement was unnecessary, explains Daniel Lieberman, a human evolutionary biologist. As a society, we no longer move much in daily life, but the evolutionary instinct(本能)to conserve energy remains, Lieberman says. "That voice I don't want to exercise, 'is completely normal and natural, "he says. 

Physical-activity researcher Matthieu Boisgontier demonstrated that phenomenon in a 2018study. He gave people control of a digital avatar(化身)while they were connected to brain-activity monitors. They were instructed to move the avatar away from images of sedentary(久坐的) behavior that appeared on screen and toward images of physical activity. The study found that avoiding sedentary behavior took more brain power, suggesting that we have an"automatic tendency" to pick relaxing over moving. That conclusion shows up repeatedly in research. Studies show, for example, that people consistently choose to take a lift instead of the stairs. "That natural instinct isn't bad—it's just that modern life gives us so many chances to give in to our preference for rest that we have reached an extreme that is no longer beneficial to our health, "Boisgontier says. 

They thought it was going to be easy. A piece of cake. The band, Suénalo, were excited that they would present their skills to a group of troubled youth at a detention center(少管所). 

They arrived at the invitation of a friend, who was an adviser at the center. He had mentioned a career day where members of the community came to speak to the teens about their jobs. Usually the speakers were bankers or lawyers, so he thought it would be interesting for the kids to meet some musicians and maybe even hear some music. "They need something cool to get their attention"was the pitch from the friend. 

The kids, about 40, were brought in, looking distant, some even angry. Chad Bernstein, the trombone player, started telling the career of a musician from touring to copyright to the business aspects, trying to draw their interest. However, it didn't. Sensing that they couldn't win, the band, a little thrown, decided to play one song. With music going, the kids seemed to respond, their heads nodding to the beat. One of them sang a lyric (歌词). The band sang it back. Then, one by one, the musicians began picking up the beat. Chad started freestyling a rap, going back and forth with the kid, and in no time, other kids jumped in. Suddenly the band and the kids were creating a song from scratch and all of them were in musical heaven. 

For Chad, that moment inspired him to found Guitars Over Guns, an organization that pairs at-risk middle-schoolers with professional musicians. As both music teachers and life coaches, the musicians give the kids a way to find their creative voices and get through dark times. Over time, the kids have dropped their tough fronts and shared personal stories, from family tragedies to ordinary struggles at school with friends. 

"So far we've helped over 2, 700 students. Our work is highly satisfying because it shows us that a music career is more than a job;it can have more impact, "says Chad Bernstein.

Greg sat on the driveway of his home and rolled his papers for delivery on Monday afternoon. The shouts of his friends playing soccer in the schoolyard across the street caught his attention. He watched his neighbor, John, kick the ball into the goal and shouts of excitement came from his teammates.

Greg sighed and eagerly looked at the group. He would love to be able to play soccer too. But he had to deliver newspapers every afternoon. He didn't have enough time to play soccer.

He thought about his paper route. It had been necessary after his father suddenly lost his job. Greg saw his parents struggling to meet their bills. His mother had to go to work while his father looked for another job. Greg knew there must be some small way he could help. His friend Mark had a paper route, and Greg decided that he could get a paper route to help his parents too.

A piece of fossil sponge（海绵） that formed during the early Cambrian period was recently discovered in Changde, Hunan Province.

The  （discover） fossil sponge can date back to 540 million years ago. It ranges around 4 centimeters in  （high） and 3.5 centimeters in width. Paleontologist（古生物学家） Zou Hesi told the Global Times that the size is giant for a sponge from that period oftime.

"Sponges become bigger and bigger over time; another fossil piece  （date） back to around 300 million years ago was also recently discovered in Ireland, for example. It was about 50 centimeters," Zou told the Global Times. Found near the Cliffs of Moher, the piece  （name） as "Cyathophycus balori". It is so far the largest known fossil sponge in the world.

 4-centimeter Chinese piece was unearthed  （unexpected） during a field survey that local researchers were conducting in the Taoyuan District, Changde. Tong Guanghui, a research fellow at the Hunan Museum of Geology,  （tell） the media that the team found a piece of rock on their way  research destination in the town of Sanyanggang.

Imagine a world where nothing ends up in landfill. Instead, everything can be reused and recycled, creating products that never reach their "end of life". According to a recent report by the Circle Economy Foundation, only 

7.2% of all used materials are being cycled back to be reused and recycled without creating waste.

An Italian company aims to change this by creating furniture products made from a plastic-like biomaterial, which is fully organic and biodegradable（可生物降解的）, and can be used over and over again. Using fruit peel, orange seeds and coffee grounds collected from businesses in Italy, the company can redistribute products to the same businesses for use in their offices, instead of furniture made from common plastic. If, by mistake, any of the material ends up in the ocean, it doesn't produce any microplastics.

Each product is made through a four-step process. First, the food waste is dried and crushed into a very fine powder. Then, the powder is mixed with a biodegradable plastic alternative known as polyhydroxybutyrat （PHB）, with the fruit waste making the PHB more study（坚固的）. The material is then turned into a filament（细丝） and, using a spool, put into a 3D printer.

Because a lot of food waste would be buried and incinerated in the landfill, which would produce lots of carbon dioxide, Reusing fruit peel and coffee grounds decrease carbon dioxide from the production of plastic, according to the director of operations in the company. He adds that the biomaterial is as sturdy as wood, and won't begin to break down unless it's touched by water, bacteria or acidity.

Despite its eco-friendly benefits, the biomaterial is expensive. It costs probably six times more than common plastic, and it is a very difficult and expensive process, so this is why many companies aren't doing it.

However, the director is hopeful that in a few years, as-more consumers and businesses are forced to face the damage that unsustainable plastic is doing to the planet, the biomaterial will be much more widely used. "We really believe this is the material of the future," says the director. "Little by little, a step at a time."

Are alien s trying to contact the Earth? Six new mysterious blasts of radio energy are detected from deep space. While the source of the waves remains unknown, some suggest the mysterious bursts of energy could be a sign of alien life trying to contact us. The waves were detected by researchers from McGill University in Montreal.

The detection follows 11 previously recorded fast radio bursts （FRBs） from the same location, called FRB121102. This is the only known repeater of FRBs. Although there have been a number of FRBs from the site, the origin of the radio bursts remains a puzzle to researchers.

But the researchers say that the repeated FRBs imply that whatever is causing the FRBs is not a one-time event, such as an explosion or a collision. Instead, they say that flares（耀斑） from a young neutron star（中子星） are a promising candidate.

Previously when waves have been detected, astronomers have also asked Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence （SETI） to take a closer look at whether they could be a message from aliens. But it is unclear whether the researchers will ask SETI to help this time.

If there were any intelligent alien life forms out there, in Stephen Hawking's opinion, we were playing a dangerous game by trying to contact them. If alien s discovered the Earth, they would likely want to conquer and colonize our planet.

But the co-founder and former director of the SETI Institute, Jill Tarter, doesn't think this will be the case. She argues any alien s who have managed to travel across the universe may be friendly and peaceful. "The idea of a civilization which has managed to survive far longer than we have... and the fact that the technology remains an aggressive one, to me, doesn't make sense," she said.
