Artificial intelligence（Al）has the potential to develop more efficient methods of farming in order to fight global warming. 

 Global warming threatens every aspect of our everyday lives, including crop production. It will reduce the soil moisture（水分）in areas close to the equator according to a study. We are already seeing the negative impact of these changed growing conditions on our crop production. Climate change harms poorer countries that do not have the money to import food. The result is growing food insecurity. However, agriculture is not just affected by global warming—agriculture is part of a vicious（恶性的）cycle in which farming leads to global warming, which in turn destroys agricultural production. The process of clearing land for agriculture results in widespread deforestation（毁林）and contributes to 40 percent of global methane production. Therefore, to deal with climate change, it is necessary to ensure reforestation—but how? What is the path to efficient, environmentally-conscious farming?

This is where AI enters the scene. Farmers use AI for methods such as precision agriculture; they can monitor crop moisture, soil composition, and temperature in growing areas, enabling farmers to increase production by learning how to take care of their crops and determine the ideal amount of water to use. Furthermore, this technology may help reduce deforestation by allowing humans to grow food in urban areas. It could be especially beneficial for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, where much of the population lives in cities. 

However, AI is far from a silver bullet—it could actually contribute to global warming as well. Due to the large amount of data that AI needs to process, training a single AI releases five times the emissions that an average car would give off during its lifetime. Further, securing access to AI on a global scale may pose some challenges. Countries will need experts in the field who can successfully use the technology and Internet connection, neither of which are always readily available. Therefore, there is still a long way for developing countries to take advantage of the benefits of AI. 

Given these concerns, global leaders must consider the potential costs, and the environmental consequences of data processing before developing AI for use in agriculture. 

Most children love stories. Stories are entertaining and fun, but can they be more than just fun? Findings from a new study led by Rebecca de Leeuw, an assistant professor at the Radboud University, indicate stories in movies can also be meaningful for children. 

The researchers contacted children between 4 and 15years old after they watched the Disney film Inside Out. This film takes place mainly in the head of an 11-year-old girl, where her emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, personified as different characters—conflict on how to help her best in her new life after her family moves. The story follows the "hero's journey" —a classical narrative（叙事的）framework, which involves a hero who goes on an adventure, overcomes challenges, and return s changed. So the research team chose this film. When making this film, the film-makers had in-depth discussions with psychologists to make the emotion animation consistent with scientific knowledge. 

The research team asked mostly open-ended questions to encourage the children to share their thoughts, including the key question: "Was there a part of the movie you had to think about?" Children looked at stills of important scenes and were invited to explain in their own words what happened. If they liked, they also rewatched scenes of the film. 

While watching, children made sense of the feelings, motives and behavior of characters in the film, using their social intelligence skills. They also further developed these skills when they were challenged in making sense of the story. Children also mentioned they appreciated seeing acts of pity, kindness, love and bravery in the film. Just like adults, they were even touched to tears by these qualities. 

One of the children in the study even expressed that Joy inspired her to never quit in her own life. The more insights children gained while watching, the more meaningful the story became for them. Altogether, stories in movies can be a quick way for children to gain life experience and wisdom. 

Ammaar Reshi, 28, has been fascinated by technology since he was a child. One day, when he was experimenting with an AI-powered chatbot, he began to consider how artificial intelligence could be used to create a basic children's book to give to his friends. Without ever picking up a pen and paper, he created a 12-page picture book. 

Just 72 hours later, Reshi self-published his book on Amazon's digital bookstore. The next day he got the paperback（平装书）, which was made available for free through another Amazon service called KPD. 

Reshi said he paid nothing to have the book created and published, although he has already paid for a $30-per-month Midway subscription. Impressed by the speed and results of his project, Reshi shared the experience in a Twitter thread that attracted more than 2,000 comments and 5,800 retweets（转发）. 

Reshi stated that he received great feedback（反馈）from users, who lauded his creative work at first. But the next day, the replies were negative. "There was this incredibly passionate reaction," Reshi said. "At 4 am, I was woken up by my phone ex ploding every two minutes with a new tweet saying things like ‘We hate you'. "

Reshi was taken aback by the outpouring of emotion in response to what was supposed to be a present for some friends' children. He didn't realize he had landed in the heart of a much broader argument. 

Some artists have expressed concern that AI art generators are stealing their work in response to Reshi's book. And some artists claim that their work has been used without their permission to train Al picture generators. 

"I wouldn't even call myself an author," Reshi said. "The AI is essentially the ghostwriter（代笔者）, and the other AI is the illustrator. " But he thought the process was creative.

Just few days before my birthday I realized that none of my friends was going to be around. This was because my birthday is during the holidays. Usually my friends make it a point that they are around during my birthday but this does not always happen. Most of the time, few of my friends are there, but this time none of my friends were around. I even called my cousins but even they had plans. I was disappointed and unhappy. I even told my parents that I did not want to celebrate my birthday this year.

My parents told me that I could go to my grandparent's place and celebrate my birthday.However, even that was not possible, as my grandparents had already planned to go to my uncle's place. I was extremely sad and unhappy that I would be all alone on my birthday.

University Campuses Should Be OpenTo The Public

To open or not to open—that is a question for university campuses.

Nationwide, most famous universities announced the  (recover) of public visits through online appointment systems before the summer holiday began. The universities (become) popular destinations of primary and secondary school students in recent years.

Ways to Develop Patience

Patience is essential to daily life and might be key to a happy one. Having patience means being able to wait calmly in the face of any difficulty or failure. This is all good news for the naturally patient or for those who have the time and opportunity to take a strict training in patience. But what about the rest of us? 

Rebuild the situation. Feeling impatient is not just an automatic emotional response; it involves conscious thoughts and beliefs, too. If a colleague is late for a meeting, you can be angry about his lack of respect, or see those extra 15 minutes as an opportunity to get some reading done.  And consciously trying to regulate our emotions can help us train our self-control muscles.

Practice mindfulness. In one study, kids who did a six-month mindfulness program in school became less impulsive(冲动的) and more willing to wait for a reward.  Taking a deep breath and noticing your feelings of anger or overload can help you respond with more patience to your children.

If you guessed the real dog, you're right. Stuffed animals, as cute and lovely as they may be, just don't effectively activate our frontal cortex(额叶皮层), the part of the brain overseeing how we think and feel, according to a new study published in the journal PLOSONE. The study found an even stronger rise in brain activity when the person petted the fur of a real dog versus a stuffed animal.

"We chose to research the frontal cortex because this brain area is involved in several executive(执行) functions, such as attention, working memory, and problem-solving. But it is also involved in social and emotional processes,"said study lead author Rahel Marti, a doctoral student in the division of clinical psychology at the University of Basel in Switzerland.

Why is this finding important? It provides additional evidence that live human-animal interaction therapy(疗法) may promote cognitive and emotional activity in the brain. Marti said,"If patients with deficits in motivation, attention, and socioemotional functioning show higher emotional involvement in activities connected to a real dog, then such activities could increase the chance of learning and of achieving treatment aims."

"This is an interesting, seriously conducted study that provides new insight into associations between human-animal interaction and regional prefrontal brain activity in healthy adults. We found that brain activity increased when the contact with a real dog or a stuffed animal became closer. This confirms previous studies relating closer contact with animals to increased brain activity,"Marti said.
