6、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的故事。
My family moved from Toowoomba, Canada to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain from the 1950s epidemic of polio(小儿麻痹症). She wished to visit specialists in London. The day before we boarded the ship, Father bade a tender farewell to his five-year-old "friend" at the dock(码头), an Australian cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father's friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas.
Six weeks later, a letter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father's face crumbling and his eyes glistening as he read the letter. We tried to comfort him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was. Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC radio and other local newspapers. Despite some "sightings" in the dock at first, the dog was never found later. It seemed Spider decided to search for us elsewhere.
We sailed back two years later and re-established our home in Toowoomba. My father immediately began his own searching for Spider. Several months passed but there was still no news concerning Spider. The dog was gone, possibly shot or dead from starvation or exhaustion.
One cold morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an old lady who said she was putting food out for a very old dog. In the night the food disappeared. This had been going on for a few weeks. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework and we set off immediately. When we arrived at the old lady's house, she invited us into an old bush. Sadly, she then told us that the "dingo dog" hadn't been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle (口哨) for Spider.

"Consumers complain that the modern tomato has little flavor. It's like a water bomb," said Sanwen Huang, who works at the Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. "Tomato farmers care about yield, and the genetic variants related to yield are not related to tasty tomato flavors."
How can farmers ditch this unpleasant thing and recover the rich, sweet flavor of the tomato? To find out, Huang and colleagues investigated which genes are related to tomatoes' taste. The scientists created a 100-person group that sampled 160 tomatoes based on sensory qualities. Based on the group's feedback, the researchers identified dozens of chemical compounds(化合物) that could be related to the tomato's taste. Using a statistical model that determined the concentration of various chemicals in the tomatoes, the scientists identified 33 most important flavor compounds. The researchers then measured the content of them in each of the tomatoes, and identified about 250 genetic loci(基因座) that controlled tomato flavor. This finding revealed the genetic basis of tomato flavor.
But the researchers also wanted to determine why store-bought tomatoes don't taste good. It turns out that modern tomato varieties are selected according to qualities such as big size because buyers prefer large fruit, and firmness because it makes tomatoes easier to ship. Meanwhile, the quality of flavor has been ignored, said the researchers.
Volatiles(挥发性物质), in particular, are essential for good flavor. The removal of specific volatiles from tomatoes results in significant reduction in people's liking. Moreover, refrigeration can change a tomato's volatile compounds.
"But there is hope for a future filled with tasty, new varieties of store-bought tomatoes, as our results provide a road map for improvement of flavor. By working together, geneticists, biochemists, farmers and customers can provide better-flavored tomatoes for our society." Huang said.

Pet and animal-related apps are creating cybersecurity risks to their owners, new research has shown. While being able to keep track of your cat and dog may be an attractive benefit to many pet owners as it can provide peace of mind, allowing a third party to track your movements may be much less attractive.
Computer scientists at Newcastle University and Royal Holloway, University of London have exposed multiple security and privacy issues by evaluating 40 popular Android apps for pets. The results show that several of these apps are putting their users at risk by exposing their login or location details.
Password vulnerability(漏洞) was one of the areas exposed by the team. They identified three applications that had the user's login details visible in plain text within non-secure HTTP traffic. This means that anyone is able to observe the internet traffic of someone using one of these apps and will be able to find out their login information. In addition to login information, two of the apps also showed user details, such as their location that may enable someone to gain access to their devices and risk a cyber-attack.
Another area of concern identified in the study was the use of trackers. All but four of the applications were found to feature some form of tracking software. A tracker gathers information on the person using the application, on how they use it, or on the smartphone being used.
Scott Harper is a PhD student at Newcastle University's School of Computing and the lead author of the study. He said, "Pet tech such as smart collars and GPS trackers for your cat or dog, is a rapidly growing industry and it brings with it new security, privacy, and safety risks to the pet owners. We would urge anyone using these apps to take the time to ensure they are using a unique password, check the settings and ensure that they consider how much data they are sharing or willing to share."
(1)、What's the function of the first paragraph?A、To display the benefits of pet tracking. B、To introduce pet and animal-related apps. C、To show the evidence of cybersecurity risks. D、To raise the topic by giving research findings.(2)、What's the main idea of paragraph 3?A、The threat of a cyber-attack. B、The operation of HTTP traffic. C、The access to login information. D、The potential risks in password security.(3)、What attitude should we hold while using pet tech according to Scott Harper?A、Flexible. B、Determined. C、Cautious. D、Casual.(4)、Which is the most suitable title for the text?A、Are Our Pets Leaking Information about Us? B、How Can We Observe the Internet Traffic? C、What Does Tracking Software Bring Us? D、Are We Safe to Use Android Apps? -
13、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Fifteen years ago, I loved going to the gym, but family life and work commitments meant I was finding it hard to get there. With the help of my dad and uncle, I built my own gym in the garden. It's basically a beautified room with insulation(隔热层) and electrics and a small heater for the winter. We built a corner desk too intending it to be for me to do the paperwork for my small business. However, the desk served its real purpose when I started my writing journey two years ago.
I've always had stories going through my mind. I could be out jogging and I'd lose myself playing out thoughts in my head like movie scenes. Once seen, they stay in there. I have trouble keeping other information, but when it comes to story ideas, they lock in. I have many full novel ideas in my head waiting to be written. When I was younger, I wasn't brave enough to write. I didn't do well in school and I've spent most of my life in physical work, so the idea of becoming a writer felt laughable.
I now know there isn't a writer type; writers come in all forms. I still use the gym for its real purpose, but some of the equipment has been replaced by books and a small be d for the time when I want to relax and read. I like to have my desk looking colorful—some might say messy. My love for sport is clear to see, with photos around of my favorite boxers and the football team I follow. On the other hand, having my own writing room is important. Without it I wouldn't be where I am now on my writing journey. It's far from charming, but it is mine. It's my happy place.
(1)、Why did the author build his own gym?A、Because of his tight schedule. B、Because of his small business. C、Because of his poor financial condition. D、Because of the encouragement of his family.(2)、What can we learn about the author from paragraph 2?A、He was jogging for more ideas. B、He got on well with his study at school. C、He had the potential to become a writer. D、He was confident about becoming a writer.(3)、What is the author's gym mainly used for now?A、Reading and business. B、Storing books and typing. C、Relaxing and entertaining. D、Writing and fitness.(4)、Which section of a magazine does the passage probably come from?A、Health. B、Life. C、Education. D、Opinion. -
