  • 8、Dogs have an extraordinary ability to find their way home after being separated from their owners, a skill that has been studied widely. Previous studies believed dogs got this ability from their ancestors, the gray wolves, which needed to navigate (导航) large lands. Dogs likely created a mental map of their surroundings, with their sense of smell playing a particularly important role. Their sense of smell was up to 100,000 times stronger than humans', allowing them to follow the smell and recognize places by sight, sound, and smell.

Recently, a study in Czechia has explored how dogs navigate when lost. Researchers followed 27hunting dogs during over 600 trials in unfamiliar wooded areas. GPS trackers and cameras were used to monitor the dogs' behavior. Most of the dogs used their sense of smell to retrace their steps and find their owners. However, about 30% employed a strategy called the "compass (指南针) run", where they ran along a north-south axis before switching to a scent trail. This suggested the dogs might be using Earth's magnetic field (磁场) to guide them.

Study co-author Hynek Burda, professor at Germany's University of Duisburg-Essen, explained, "We have not yet found final evidence that the dogs used magnetic clues for navigation, but this is the most reasonable explanation." Researchers believe that dogs may combine their mental map with magnetic clues to navigate when lost.

Although these studies show dogs' impressive navigation skills, such journeys are becoming less common as dogs now form strong bonds with their owners. Monique Udell, director of the Human-Animal Interaction Laboratory at Oregon State University, explained, "Dogs raised with humans can form bonds to humans similar to child-parent attachments, with a strong will to reunite when separated."

To reduce the need for such incredible journeys, it's significant for dog owners to ensure their pets have proper identification, like a micro chip or collar with contact details. This makes reuniting lost dogs with their families easier.

  • 9、Lao Zi once said, "Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner."

People tend to gain self-worth through others' approval (认可), which is a fruitless way to go through life. Why do we allow what others think of us to have so much power over how we feel about ourselves? If it's true that you can't satisfy all the people all the time, wouldn't it make sense to stop trying?

Unfortunately, sense often isn't driving our behavior. For social beings who desire love and belonging, wanting to be liked and caring about the effect we have on others are healthy and allow us to make connections. However, where we get into trouble is when our self-worth is dependent upon whether we win someone's approval or not.

This need to be liked comes from when we were children and were completely dependent on others to take care of us. Small children are not just learning how to walk and communicate, they are also trying to learn how the world works. We learn about who we are based on communications with others. Thus, to a four-year-old, if Mommy or Daddy doesn't like him or her, there is the danger that they will abandon them. We need to understand that when we anxiously want someone to approve of us, it's being driven by that little kid part of us that is still terrified of abandonment.

As you become more capable of providing yourself with the approval you find, your need for validation (确认) by others will start to disappear, leaving you stronger, more confident, and yes, happier in your life. Imagine how much time we lose each moment we restrain our real selves in an effort to be liked.

So embrace the cliché (老话) and love your true self as it's highly doubtful that you'll regret it.

(1)、Why is Lao Zi's quotation used in paragraph 1?
A、To lead into the topic of this passage. B、To stress the importance of caring about others. C、To show us how to avoid being a prisoner. D、To introduce a famous historical figure.
(2)、What does the author say about why people expect others' approval?
A、They want to feel better than others. B、They are trying not to be abandoned. C、They believe it will bring them sense of pride. D、They consider that approval equals success.
(3)、What does the word "restrain" most likely mean in the passage?
    A、Express. B、Hide. C、Confirm. D、Reflect.
(4)、Which one is the most suitable title of this passage?
A、The Power of Self-Worth. B、Childhood Shapes Behavior. C、The Importance of Approval-Seeking. D、Staying True to Yourself.

Jane, who was sixty years old, had a big and happy family. One sunny morning in spring, Jane, together with her grandchildren Alice, John and Ted, was playing happily in the backyard. While playing, Jane said to the kids, "I am going to plant some things in the garden. Who would like to help me?"

"What are you going to plant, Grandma?" asked Alice. "I like pleasant, bright-colored roses." "But Ilike lively, big, yellow sunflowers!" said John. "Well, I'm going to plant some vegetables so that we can have fresh vegetables to eat when they are ready," said Jane.

"How long will it take to grow vegetables?" asked Ted. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially tomatoes. "It will take several months before they are ready," answered Jane. The kids were surprised. "Several months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?" asked Alice. "Why not just go to the store and buy them?" "Patience, my sweeties! Don't you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?" replied Jane. "And if all of you come to help, it won't be too much work." "I'll help you, Grandma," said Ted. He put down the basketball and went to look at the gardening tools Jane had laid out. "What should we do first?" John and Alice came over to have a look, too.

Firstly, Jane taught Ted how to use a shovel (小铲子) to dig rows of small holes for the seeds. Next, she showed Alice how to pour the seeds into each hole carefully. And then it was John's job to cover up the holes with soil little by little. Finally, Alice wrote the vegetable names on the sticks that Ted pushed into the ground. "This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted," said Jane.

After planting everything, the kids took turns filling up the watering pot so that Jane could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.

"From now on, we just water them sometimes, and with some sunlight shining on them, we'll have some delicious things to eat this summer," said Jane.
