  • 1、"All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. " But now scientists have given us an other warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.

"Many focus on the benefits of digital devices (设备) in education but ignore the costs", said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, "losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs." Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4. 5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.

Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn't show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But the result is still a warning for us, so scientists say we should stay alert for it.

"Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction. " said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.

Researchers talked to 2, 000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising: Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%)and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces (鞋带) (53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called "Generation Helpless".

  • 2、While getting into Harvard Law School is never easy for anyone, Rehan, whose single-parent family was poor, made it by himself.

Rehan lived through years of family struggles, poverty, and unfairness. He saw his father do several jobs to raise his brother and him with little rest and food. Rehan admitted he was pained and "hungry for more". Life taught him the value of hard work and self-improvement at a very young age.

Those hard times tested the family as a whole. The more stressed Rehan was, the worse his grades became. His father told him to learn to relax by exercising. With a different purpose, he channeled his energy into sports, which he hoped would become his way out of a poor life.

However, things didn't go that way. His father was in bad physical condition and then Rehan had to take a job at Bates Trucking & Trash Removal. He was smart and worked harder than any others. His co-workers spoke highly of him and tried to persuade him to go back to school. One of the company owners even helped him enroll (注册) at Bowie State University. Rehan earned a 4. 0 grade point average and was able to transfer to the University of Maryland. But Rehan's struggles still weren't over. During his junior year at the University of Maryland, his father suffered a stroke (中风). Instead of dropping out of school, Rehan returned to Bates Trucking & Trash Removal in order to save his father. He got up each day at 3 am to work before class and doubled his learning plans. Finally, he graduated with good grades. Moreover, he began applying to Harvard Law School and made it.

With a sick father, a younger brother, a hard job, and a little time to learn, Rehan just had his own painful story to stand on. "Yes, Rehan has a quick mind, but what makes his achievement even more admirable is his courageous journey to this moment," said his professor.

(1)、What does the author mean by saying "hungry for more" in Paragraph 2?
A、Rehan was pained due to the lack of food. B、Rehan wanted to get along well with his father. C、Sufferings made Rehan more determined to fight. D、Unlucky experience taught Rehan to take things easy.
(2)、Why did Rehan go into sports?
A、He wished to change his life. B、He found his talent for sports. C、He wanted to improve his mood. D、He tried to develop new hobbies.
(3)、What happened after Rehan went to work?
A、His father's health gradually improved. B、He was refused by Bowie State University. C、He could continue his study with others' help. D、His co-workers found the job difficult for him.

My eight-year-old brother Tim and I were examining a shoebox in our house. He took the top of the box off as he said we could use this box to catch a cool breeze (微风).

My family lived in a small desert town where the only breezes that blew were hot winds, especially in summer. I didn't understand what my brother was talking about, but he was several years older, so I trusted him.

"A story says kids can catch a cool breeze using a box and enjoy it whenever they want," Tim said. Surprised, I asked whether it was true, He gave a nod.

And because our parents would take us to the snow covered, windy mountains for fun the following weekend, Tim decided he'd secretly use this shoebox to catch a cool breeze. And he said he'd give the breeze-filled shoebox to our parents as a gift on their birthday. Our parents shared a birthday, which fell on a hot August day. "l want to give them a surprise, letting them enjoy the cool wind," Tim said joyfully. Inspired, I also wanted to give our parents the same gift, so I found another shoebox.

The following weekend, our family went to the mountains. Tim and I ran back and forth with our boxes, attempting to trap as many cool breezes as possible. When we arrived home, Tim stored our boxes in a rarely used refrigerator, "It'll enable us to store the cool breeze," he smiled, From that moment on, I kept an eye on our breeze boxes. My greatest worry was that they would be thrown out accidentally.

When summer arrived, our local temperature kept rising. And we had an unusually hot July day. One day, Tim and I sat before our door, trying to cool off. And the two shoe-boxes kept crossing my mind. Eventually, I was so hot that I wanted to open my breeze box.

  • 8、It's now, more than ever, crucial to adopting a low-impact lifestyle since all kinds of waste, including that of the fashion industry, are piling up in landfills with astonishing speed. Thankfully, the following tips can help you reduce clothing waste.

·Buy fewer clothes overall. It's a more cautious approach to shopping and consumption (消费) in general. Think twice about what you will buy and say no to over consumption. You can even try out a minimalist (极简主义的) lifestyle. Shop for what you need only when necessary, keep things simple, and go back to basics.

·Shop for high-quality clothing. High-quality clothes can cost more at first but save you money in the long run. Moreover, quality clothes can make you feel more comfortable and confident, improve your fashion style, and help you look your best.

    · Upcycling is very beneficial to the planet and your budget (预算). Instead of throwing old clothes away, use parts of or entire old clothes to make something new and more valuable. You can even create stylish and unique pieces of clothing by upcycling.

·Donate your unwanted fashion items. Do a quick online search for your local options to donate clothes that are still in good condition. Be sure to contact organizations first and ask them what type of clothes they accept. You can donate clothing to for-profit companies or to homeless shelters and family service agencies.

    A. Repurpose your old clothes.

    B. Upcycle everyday household objects.

    C. Limit your fashion consumption in the first place.

    D. Thrown clothes have had a disastrous impact on the planet.

    E. They are more likely to stay in good condition for a long time.

    F. Heavy coats and sweaters can go to animal shelters in your local area.

    G. Reducing clothing waste is necessary for making fashion more sustainable.

  • 9、The 2023 Nobel Prize in economics has been awarded to economic historian Claudia Goldin at Harvard University, "for having advanced our understanding of women's labor market outcomes". Goldin's work has helped to explain why women have been under-represented in the labor market for at least the past two centuries, and why even today they continue to earn less than men on average by around 13%.

Goldin mined 200 years of data to analyze how changes in women's participation in the labor force have been influenced by social, political and technological change over the past two centuries. Before Goldin's studies, it was widely thought that the increase in the percentage of women in work over the course of the 20th century was a reflection of economic growth — higher growth meant more females could be employed. But by looking back carefully at historical records, Goldin showed that the percentage of married women involved in paid work was at least as high in the late 18th century as it is today, She also demonstrated that although work opportunities for women expanded in the 20th century, they were not made use of as much as they could have been.

Goldin has also shown that inequalities in pay have not followed a simple relationship with economic growth. The earning divide between different genders was smaller during the industrial revolution during 1820 -1850; the divide changed little between 1930 and 1980. Goldin showed in 2010 that being a mother has a key role in keeping pay inequality, largely through loss of earnings when women quit work in favor of raising children.

"The strength of her work comes from combining reliable historical data with insights from economic theories of wage determination, employment discrimination and political economy," says economist Claudia Olivetti at Dartmouth College. "I am delighted to see Goldin's work recognized. She has been such an inspiration to many women and young researchers. Leading with passion, curiosity and integrity, she taught us to be brave and go for the big questions. Thanks to Goldin's research, some companies are now starting to change their practices with the introduction of flexible, family-friendly working arrangements."

(1)、Which aspect of the economy does Claudia Goldin focus on in her work?
A、The labor market. B、The political economy. C、The employment inequality. D、The gender pay gap.
(2)、What did Goldin's analysis of the 200-year data say?
A、More working women reflect economic growth. B、Jobs have been the same in the past 2 centuries. C、Economic growth doesn't bring more women into employment. D、Female labor forces have changed greatly since the 18th century.
(3)、What is the major factor in the earning divide according to Goldin ?
    A、Marriage. B、Parenthood. C、Economic growth. D、Industrial revolution.
(4)、Why is Claudia Olivetti's comment referred to in the last paragraph?
A、To show Goldin's influence. B、To praise Goldin for her bravery. C、To explain reasons for Goldin's success. D、To prove Goldin's insights into economy.
  • 10、Greenland holds enough ice to raise global sea level by 7 meters if it were all to melt (融化). The sheet currently loses around 270 billion tons of ice each year and contributes to more than 4 millimeters' global sea level rise annually — from 2013 to 2022, the average annual global sea level rise was 4.62 millimeters. However, Greenland's massive ice sheet, which is melting because of climate change, could be saved from complete melting even if global temperatures rocket past key international targets, a study suggests.

Using climate modelling, the research concludes that Greenland's melting will speed up suddenly if the average global temperature crosses a threshold (阈值) that is no higher than 2.3 ℃ above pre-industrial levels and could be much lower. That threshold might be getting quite close: the average temperature in 2025 is likely to hit 1.5 ℃ above pre-industrial levels. But we do not necessarily tip the Greenland ice sheet just because we cross the threshold. Even if temperatures shoot up by 6 ℃, or more above pre-industrial levels , humanity will be able to reduce much of that ice loss if warming is limited to 1.5 ℃ within a few centuries, the study shows. It means that the ice sheet can be saved.

But Nils Bochow, a climate scientist at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and lead author of the study and others are quick to note that taking action against climate change now will be cheaper and easier than trying to control global temperatures later. "It's a worthwhile tool to explore because what we have done so far in terms of policy is not enough to be within the limit ," says Bochow.

The authors examine the effect of average global temperature increases rather than temperature increases in the Arctic, which are happening at least three times faster than those on the rest of the planet, And the study assumes that society will somehow work out a way to cut down greenhouse gas emissions (排放) sharply in the future, perhaps through carbon-storage technology. Petrini, the co-author of the study, says he doesn't want people to think the Greenland ice sheet is going to be fine, "There's a chance to prevent some serious consequences even if there's no political will now," he says. "But we should do our bit today rather than later."

(1)、What do we learn about the Greenland ice sheet?
A、It's disappearing at a constant rate. B、It's lost more than half of its ice. C、It contributes much to the sea level rise. D、It has raised global sea level by 7 meters.
(2)、What does the underlined word "tip" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A、Overturn. B、Discount. C、Preserve. D、Explore.
(3)、How does Nils Bochow find present policies on climate change?
A、They push the climate to the limit. B、They have no practical use. C、They are suitable for climate control. D、They need further improvement.
(4)、Which can be the best title for the text?
A、Global Warming: Destroyer of Ice Sheet B、How to Save Greenland's Massive Ice Sheet C、Climate Modelling: Helper of Scientists D、How Greenland's Melting Affects Our Planet

Brie sat on her bright purple bike, eagerly waiting outside Nate's house. He was always late, so she shouted his name, hoping to speed him up. Finally, Nate rushed out, putting his helmet on his head. He picked up his bike, a red one with green stars on it. Together they sped away, racing to the park under the warm sunshine.

At the park, they dropped their bikes and walked to the swings. Onto the swings they jumped, swinging like their feet could touch the sky. Nate had a surprise for Brie, something he was sure she hadn't seen before. Once they stopped swinging, Nate decided it was time to share his little surprise. He reached into his pocket and took out a shiny compass—a birthday gift from his grandpa.

Nate opened the compass, and Brie's eyes widened with wonder. She mistook it for a clock at first, but Nate clarified that it indicated directions: N for north, S for south, and E and W for east and west. Holding the compass made Nate feel like a big boy, not a ten-year-old. Brie was impressed and curious about its purpose. Nate explained that it would help him find the right direction while walking. Realizing its significance, Brie asked to try it. She held the compass, watching the needle (指针) swing as she turned, amazed by how it always pointed north.

Their exploration was stopped when Brie noticed three boys from their neighborhood approaching. Nate put the compass back into his pocket, and they greeted the newcomers. Bill, one of the boys, had a basketball and suggested they play together. Then they had a great time, filled with laughter and games.

As the fun continued, Nate suddenly felt hungry and thirsty. Brie expressed her similar feelings. Bill pointed to the small store in the park. Excited, they walked toward it, chatting away. However, when they arrived, disappointment washed over them—the store was closed for Sunday.

Bill stared at the door for a moment and then proposed breaking the lock, saying it would be easy and the shopkeeper wouldn't miss a few juice boxes and snacks.

Working up a sweat is good for the immune system. It turns out that sweat can defeat certain harmful bacteria and viruses in the body.

    ● Protect the Heart

Healthy sweating increases blood flow and strengthens the cardiovascular (心血管) system. In one study, those with the most weekly exercise sessions were the least likely to have a negative cardiovascular event. Sports also improve relaxation and reduce stress.

    ● Speed Recovery After Exercise

Sweating increases blood flow to the skeletal muscles and improves well-being. Studies show sweating event increases growth hormone production. It is the body's way of repairing itself.

    ● Lower Stress Hormones

Sweating also activates the parasympathetic response (副交感神经反应) in the body. This de-stress mode helps us to relax, digest, and recover. Breaking a sweat through exercise helps relieve anxiety and depression. After we sweat, stress hormones go down.

No matter how much we might not enjoy sweating, it's completely normal. It can keep us healthy as we move through our days. I'd say that's a resounding yes!

    A. So is sweating good for you?

    B. Breaking a sweat can save your life.

    C. That is good for heart and mental health.

    D. But the health benefits of sweating are obvious

    E. This in turn helps recover from illness, injury, and muscle strain.

    F. In a way, sweating can influence your confidence and well-being.

    G. Studies show sweating can cut our chance of getting the flu by one-third!

Now, researchers at University College London (UCL) have found some truth to this statement. A new study suggests actors may contain their sense of self when they take on a new character, hinting at the massive impact theater training may have on fundamental mechanisms of the human brain.

"Our findings indicate that cooperating with the theater industry could be helpful in producing theories about social interaction that could also be investigated in the real world," said Dwaynica Greaves, lead author of the study. In particular, the researchers are hoping that future work in this space can focus on how participation in theatrical activities might help people with autism (自闭症).

The actors in the study were fitted with brain imaging technology while they rehearsed scenes from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. When they heard their names while performing, their response was contained in the brain region associated with self-awareness. While they were not performing, the actors responded normally when called by name.

The study also looked at interpersonal coordination between pairs of actors. The researchers noticed that two actors rehearsing together had similar brain activity in the regions of the brain associated with social interaction and action planning, revealing "specific brain systems that are coordinated during complex social interactions".

In fact, drama therapy has been considered a beneficial practical strategy for improving social communication in children with developmental or learning disabilities. An initial study found students with autism who underwent theater experiences showed significant positive changes in the development of social and language skills.

In the future, researchers at UCL aim to include both trained and untrained actors as subjects. The recent study, admittedly, lacked a control group of people without theater training and had a small sample size of only 6 actors. But the researchers remain hopeful of the possible future applications of their findings in aiding social communication, including in individuals with autism.

(1)、What did the new study find about actors taking on a role?
A、Their self-awareness may weaken. B、They may lose themselves completely. C、Their brain mechanisms may be damaged. D、They may forget their previous experiences.
(2)、How did the researchers conduct the study?
A、By interacting with the actors. B、By observing the actors' behavior. C、By surveying the actors' responses. D、By monitoring the actors' brain activity.
(3)、What did drama therapy bring to students with autism?
A、Improved physical health. B、Enhanced cognitive abilities. C、Strengthened interpersonal skills. D、Increased academic performance.
(4)、What can be inferred about the study?

A Columbia professor said his students are overwhelmed at the thought of reading multiple books a semester; a professor at the University of Virginia said that his students shut down when they're confronted with ideas they don't understand. Criticizing young people's literacy is a pastime that stretches back centuries, but in the past decade, something seems to have noticeably shifted. Most of the professors said they've seen a generational change in how their students engage with literature.

Why is this happening? Theallure of smartphones and social media came up, and it appears that many middle and high schools are teaching fewer full books. The problem does not appear to be that "kids these days" are incurious or uninterested in reading. Instead, young people might be responding to a cultural message: Books just aren't that important.

Professors didn't think their students were lazy. If anything, they were shocked at how over-scheduled and anxious college kids are today—and they saw that their students' schedules are crowded with activities that are less about personal development and more relevant to future employment. There are too many demands on their time and focus to immerse themselves easily or fully in works of literature that might take 20 hours to consume.

In 1971, 37 percent of students said that a central objective of their college years was to become well-off financially. Seventy-three percent said it was to develop a meaningful philosophy of life. By now, those numbers had almost reversed. Eighty-two percent of students said that it was essential for them to use college to become well-off financially, while 47 percent said they wanted to develop a meaningful philosophy of life. Pundits and parents alike have emphasized preprofessional courses and downplayed the importance of humanistic study. In this environment, spending hours reading a novel may seem unproductive.

(3)、What may contribute to college students' change in reading books?
A、The widespread of digital devices. B、The disappearance of literature interest. C、The laziness character in human nature. D、The finance situation in their college life.
(4)、How does the author develop the last paragraph?
    A、By giving a description. B、By listing numbers. C、By making a comparison. D、By offering examples.
  • 19、As a mother and a professional working full time, I spent all of my 30 years saying yes. Saying yes to things I wanted to do, but a lot of the time saying yes to things I disliked. This was a people-pleasing technique that would affect people's opinion of me: the woman who could do it all, so that I can obtain a nice fame in their mind.

Little did I know that I was also developing an autoimmune (自身免疫的) disease, which I have to believe was my body's way of telling me to slow down. I had severely swollen joints and brain fog but I pushed through so that I could look in the mirror at the end of the day and feel "accomplished". The only things I was accomplishing were bad health and bad habits.

And then a series of events changed everything: serious medical issues and losing my job. It took all that to help me see how intensely burnt out I was. I spent a lot of time thinking about where I had to be next instead of being present in the moment. But now, I wake up each day knowing that everything on my schedule has been purposefully agreed to.

Looking back, I had the capability to suffer the pressure to say yes. I also felt it necessary to say yes, from driving people to the airport to seeing family every Friday night. I always wanted to solve everyone's problems and offered sound and immediate solutions. It was one big "yes" to everything.

I was everyone's cheerleader, but forgot how to cheer for myself along the way. But saying no is being my own cheerleader. And it's not saying no to caring for family and friends. Instead, it's a minor change in mindset, taking a pause before automatically agreeing. I take a breath, do a quick count of my energy and ability before jumping in.

A、To please her boss. B、To prove her profession. C、To earn herself a good reputation. D、To push herself to the limit.
(2)、How did the author deal with the changes in her body?
A、She got rid of bad habits. B、She thought little of them. C、She slowed down her life pace. D、She paid more attention to her health.
(3)、What will the author do before saying yes?
A、Find a cheerleader. B、Evaluate her situation. C、Breathe in some fresh air. D、Seek help from her friends.
(4)、Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?
A、Ways to Improve Time Management. B、The Dangers of Autoimmune Diseases. C、How to Build a Good Reputation at Work. D、The Importance of Saying "No" for Self-Care.

Treating Rarer Cases in First Aid Situations

Help someone who is having a seizure

Seizures (疾病突发) can be scary things for people who have never experienced them before. Luckily, helping people with seizures is relatively straightforward.

·Clear the surroundings to protect the person from hurting themselves.

·Activate (激活) emergency medical services if the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes or if the person is not breathing afterward.

·After this period of time has ended, help them to the floor and put something soft or flat under their head. Turn them on to their side to ease breathing, but do not hold the person down or try to stop their movements.

·Be friendly and reassure them as their consciousness (意识) returns and do not offer food or water until they are fully alert.

Help someone survive a heart attack

It helps to know the symptoms of a heart attack, which can include rapid heartbeat, pressure or pain in the chest, a sore throat, general unease, and sweating. Rush the person to the hospital immediately while giving them an aspirin, which the person should chew.

    Identify someone having a stroke

Again, knowing the symptoms of a stroke is important. They include temporary inability to talk or understand what is being said, confusion, loss of balance or dizziness, inability to raise their arms and severe headaches with no warning, among others. Rush a person that you suspect has had a stroke to the emergency room immediately.

(1)、Which of the following treatments is proper to save people with seizures?
