Two decades ago,Babar was one of the few children attending school.The school was free,but few families could afford the books, 1 and ride there.

How to Make a Marathon Feel Easier

Marathon runners get to influence their effort-based decision making in two ways:firstly by increasing their motivation and,once that is maxed out,by reducing perception of effort, which  can be better  thought of as"making  it feel  easier" .  But here are  some techniques to make that marathon feel more achievable.

Studies have found if we learn to accept unpleasant feelings as something that must besuffered,we perform better and our perception of effort reduces.Before a marathon we do  this by"preparing ourselves"for the discomfort ahead.The aim is not to make it too scary but try to control or resist the fears.

You have a long day in front of you,so you may as well try to enjoy it.You can distract yourself from the miles ahead by looking for things to make you smile. Anything that gives you a relief from the discomfort in your body is fair game.

 Chunking is a technique where you break down the distance into bits that feel much more manageable and have a goal or a treat for each one.You can chunk into distance,  landmarks,places you'll see supporters or based on nutrition consumption.

Finally,keeping in mind your technique,create your instructional secret,which is the  short phrase you repeatin your head to remind your body how you run at your best.Mine is"head up"but yours mightbe about your body position,placement or technique.So,head up into your marathon,smile when it gets tricky and pick a tool to make it feel easier.

When stressed out,many of us turn to junk food like deep-fried food for comfort.But a new research suggests this strategy may backfire.The study found that in animals,a high-fat diet disrupts resident gut bacteria( 肠 道 细 菌 ) ,changes  behavior and,through  a  complex pathway connecting the gut to the brain,influences brain chemicals in ways that fuel anxiety.

"Everyone knows that these are not healthy foods,but we tend to think about them strictly in terms of a little weight gain,"said lead author Christopher Lowry,a professor of integrative physiology at CU Boulder."If you understand that they also impact your brain in a way that can promote anxiety,that makes the risk even higher."

Lowry's team divided mice into two groups:Half got a standard diet of about 11%fat for nine weeks;the others got a high-fat diet of 45%fat,consisting mostly of fat from animal products.The typical American diet is about 36%fat,according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

When compared to the control group,the group eating a high-fat diet,not surprisingly, gained weight.But the animals  also  showed  significantly  less  diversity  of gut  bacteria. Generally speaking,more bacterial diversity is associated with better health,Lowry explained.

The high-fat diet group also showed higher expression of three genes(基因)(tph2,htrla,and slcba4)involved  in  production  and  signaling  of the  brain  chemical  called  serotonin— particularly in a region of the central part of the brain known as the dorsal raphe nucleus cDRD,which is associated with stress and anxiety.While serotonin is often billed as a"feel- good brain chemical",Lowry notes that certain subsets of serotonin neurons(神经元)can, when activated,touch off anxiety-like responses in animals.Especially,heightened expression of tph2 in the cDRD has been associated with mood disorders in humans.

"To think that just a high-fat diet could change expression of these genes in the brain is extraordinary,"said Lowry."The high-fat group essentially had a high anxiety state in their brain."However,Lowry stresses that not all  fats  are  bad,and  that  healthy  fats  like  those

found in fish,nuts and seeds can be good for the brain

Perplexity is a measurement used to evaluate the performance of language models in predicting the next word in a group of words.It measures how well the model can estimate the

probability of a word occurring based on the previous context.A lower perplexity  score indicates better predictability and understanding of the language,while a higher perplexity score suggests a higher degree of uncertainty and less accurate predictions.The human mind is so complex compared to current AI models that human-written text has  high perplexity compared to AI-generated text.

Examples:

High Perplexity:"The teapot sang an opera of hot,wheeling tea,every  steamy note  a symphony of flavor."

Low Perplexity:"I poured hot water into the teapot,and a fresh smell filled the room." Burstiness refers to the variation in the length and structure of sentences within a piece of content.It measures the degree  of diversity and unpredictability in  the arrangement of sentences.Human writing often exhibits bursts and lulls(间歇),with a mix of long and short sentences,while AI-generated content tends to have a more uniform and regular pattern.

Higher burstiness indicates  greater  creativity,spontaneity( 自 发 性 ) ,and  engagement  in writing,while lower burstiness reflects a more robotic and monotonous(单调的)style.Just like the perplexity score,human-written content usually has a high burstiness score.

Examples:

High Burstiness:"The alarm screamed.Feet hit the floor.The tea kettle whistled.Steam streamed.Heart    pounded.The    world,awake."

Low Burstiness:"In the peaceful morning,the alarm clock's soft ring greeted a new day.   I walked to the kitchen,my steps light and unhurried.The tea kettle whistled its gentle song, a comforting tune that harmonized with the steam's soft whisper."

As a college professor,I am required to hold an office hour before my lecture.These  office hours are optional and tend to be busier at the beginning and end of a semester(学期).

In the middle,they can become quiet.A few years ago I was given a flute(长笛)as a gift,so I decided that  I would  use  my  quiet  office  hours  to  practice  this  new  instrument.The experience brought unexpected insights into performance anxiety.

I held my office hour in the near-empty lecture hall,one hour before the class began.The  hall was open to any student who wished to talk with me about coursework or to take a seat and quietly read before the lecture began.I would assemble( 组 装 )my flute,open my  lesson book,and begin working on the instrument I had never played before.I also followed online video lessons—all done in front of a few students who would come early to class.

I would begin playing long tones,closing my eyes and "forgetting"that anyone was in the room with me.I was surprised to find that I felt no anxiety while learning a new instrument in front of others.Had I been playing my main instrument,I would have had more concern about the level of my playing and how my playing was being received.However,in this setting,it was clear that I was an absolute beginner with no expectations of impressing anyone with my mastery.My attention was set on figuring the instrument out.I had no expectations of how I would sound and had little expectations of sounding like anything more than a beginner.

There have been many things I have learned from my experiment of learning an instrument in public.Whenever musicians talk with me about their stage fright,I offer them this story.

Maddy's daughter Cathy suffered from a condition called spina bifida (脊柱裂). She spent most of her life in a wheelchair, which made even the simplest tasks a tough challenge. One such challenge for Cathy was getting a haircut. As Maddy's neighbor, I witnessed the daily struggle firsthand and felt the urge to help. A hairstylist myself, I decided to visit Maddy's home to cut Cathy's hair. Little did I know this small act would light a spark within me.

Through my visits, I realized that many others in our community had the same problem. Maddy explained the difficulties special groups of people encountered —— the loud noises and strong smells in regular hair salons were too much for people with autism (自闭症). Also, just getting into a salon was tough for people in wheelchairs. Her words touched me, and I wondered if there was something more I could do to help.

An idea began to form in my mind—I could open a special salon, a place where people with physical disabilities or psychological problems would feel more comfortable. It wouldn't just be easy to enter for people in wheelchairs; it would also have floors with different textures(纹理) to help those who can't see well. To make the place even more comfortable, it would have calm music instead of loud pop songs. Toys and blankets would be on hand to help people stay calm. Hairstylists would use quiet hair dryers and soft voices. They would also learn how to help customers who don't like others touching their hair. Most importantly, they would treat every customer with the same level of respect.

The only issue was that I didn't have the funds to make this dream a reality. As a hairstylist, I had limited savings. Maddy suggested," How about organizing a community bazaar(义卖) in our neighborhood this Saturday to raise funds for the salon?" Her eyes shone with enthusiasm as she continued," People love supporting good causes, and I'm sure many would join in to help create a place where everyone feels comfortable getting a haircut. " I nodded, recognizing the brilliance in her plan.

To Travel or to Learn Skills?

 Set in the fictional setting of the Rong and Ning Mansions during the Qing Dynasty, the novel mainly tells the life of Jia Baoyu, a young character( concern) about the emotional well- being of those around him, especially the beautiful and talented young ladies in his family. The story opens with the introduction of the " Stone,"mysterious object carved with legends, ( symbolize) the fate of the characters and the decline of the feudal society. The( beautiful) of the Daiying Garden, much of the novel's action takes place, servesa microcosm(缩影) of the larger world outside, reflecting the complexities of human nature and the fleeting pleasures.

 Last year, as my 9- year- old son, Leopold, and I prepared for a ski trip to Keystone, I set a rule: We would say yes to everything. Leopold is a picky eater and can be1 to try new things.

Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. It can be easy to feel upset with overflowing email inboxes, housework, social responsibilities. Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off!

According to the psychologist David Cohen, there are three key reasons why lists are beneficial. Firstly, they help to drown out the disorder and anxiety that comes with having never- ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don't have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand.Secondly, lists provide structure and guidance, giving us a plan to follow. As well as this, our brains are more likely to keep information that is presented in a structured and organized manner.. They act as proof of what we have achieved, which can help boost our sense of accomplishment and motivation. Seeing our progress on paper can be a great motivator to keep going and tackle more tasks.

Another possible reason why our brains love lists is something called the" Zeigarnik Effect". This is the name psychologists use for when we remember things we need to do, our unfinished tasks, better than things we have already completed. Researchers from Wake Forest University tested the interference of the Zeigarnik effect on a group of people. The researchers concluded that the group permitted to plan had reduced anxiety and performed better in the next task.

In conclusion, the to- do list is an invaluable tool for managing our daily lives. It just might be the key to unlocking your full potential.

The idea that night owls who don't go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to bed early.

Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants' sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (睡眠类型) affected brain performance. They found that those who stayed up late and those classed as" intermediate" had" superior cognitive function", while morning risers had the lowest scores.

Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. Artists, authors and musicians known to be night owls include Henride Toulouse- Lautrec, James Joyce and Kanye West; But while politicians such as , Winston Churchill and Barack Obama famously seemed to thrive on little sleep, the study found that sleep duration is important for brain function, with those getting between seven and nine hours of shut- eye each night performing best in cognitive tests.

Dr Raha West, lead author and clinical research fellow at the department of surgery and cancer at Imperial College London, said:" While understanding and working with your natural sleep tendencies is essential, it's equally important to remember to get just enough sleep, not too long or too short. This is crucial for keeping your brain healthy and functioning at its best."

Prof Daqing Ma, the co- leader of the study who is also from Imperial's department of surgery and cancer, added:" We found that sleep duration has a direct effect on brain function, and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is really important for boosting, and safeguarding, the way our brains work.

What exactly is an audiobook today? Is it a book? Is it a play? Or is it becoming something else entirely? What is clear is that a push for market dominance is driving it into a new trend. 

Amazon- owned Audible, the market leader, hired the Oscar- winning director Sam Mendes to record multi- voice versions of the Dickens novels Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, making audiobooks the performing of the plays, and announced last month that it had reached an agreement for a recording of JK Rowling's Harry Potter series, voice d by more than 100 actors and featuring a" groundbreaking new soundscape". The new Potter audiobooks, it said, would not take over but maintain conventional recordings by Stephen Fry and Jim Dale, which Audible also hosts.

To say that audio versions are different does not mean they are worse than printed texts. For people with dyslexia(阅读障碍) or ADHD (多动症), they can be a lifeline— as they can be for those who do not have time, or the habit, of reading books. Commuters, and men between the ages of 25 and 44, have been identified as key drivers of their growing popularity.

The good news for those who secretly find audiobooks more accessible, but are embarrassed to admit it, is that brain scans have revealed that they stimulate the same cognitive and emotional parts of the brain. But so would a radio play. Listening to stories, another intriguing piece of research revealed, sets the pulse racing far more than watching them.

So while we celebrate what audiobooks have in common with their print versions – both enable the brain to create its own pictures in a world where pre- manufactured images too often do all the work for us- we should also appreciate that they are translations into a different medium, even when read by the authors themselves. What is certain is that there is room for both.

Nothing screamed freedom for me as a kid like green rubber boots. Each winter meant new boots for my little brother and me. Sometimes they were Christmas presents, but more often they were simply necessities for two boys who took their job of getting dirty very seriously and whose feet grew like they stepped in fertilizer each night.

Depending on the model, they might have long yellow laces (鞋带) all the way up the front and a strip of yellow rubber around the top. Sometimes we got the common slip- on kind, but I liked the lace- up type better. I loved threading those laces in and out and in and out and then fastened them down tight at the top to lock the legs of my overalls or jeans in place. You couldn't maintain the wavy effect with the slip- on kind, so you couldn't look like a British soldier for very long with those.

The only drawback to the laces was that over time the plastic tip would wear off and the laces would be worn out. Then threading them through the eyes got to be a chore- especially when some weeds or insects would grab hold of the ends and make a sticky mess.

Getting boots at the store was nice, but nothing was better than getting boot s in a wrapped- up box. The best ones have a pretty lid(盖子) and open like a treasure chest. Sometimes a big sticker with a picture of the boots greeted us from under the wrapped paper. But every time, raising the lid released a sweet smell of rubbery goodness.

I loved the smooth inside of the boot, and moving my toes in it. There was always plenty of space for growing feet. Then came the important walk around the room and up and down the hall, booming along on the hardwood floor. Best of all was the bang of the back door, the clumping down steps, and the heavy, thunderous thunderous thunk, thunk across the yard to the nearest hole of mud and freedom.

"MEATLOAF AGAIN?"I stared at the plate with a feeling of disappointment.

 My mom knew how to make seven meals. That was all. She kept all seven recipes labeled with a day of the week. That day was Meatloaf Monday. Again.

" It's just, it had been Tun a Tuesdays and Spaghetti Saturdays for, like, my entire life. Not every meal had to start with the same letter as a day of the week."

 My mom's eyes flashed. But she said nothing. I knew she didn't consider learning new recipes due to her overwhelming stress.

 The next day I was sitting next to Tania, whose dad was the best cook, in our school's brand- new- since- six- months- ago kitchen classroom. Everything— the tables, the stove, the pots and pans—— sh one and sparkled. I was about to ask Tania about a new recipe, but Mr. Bruin, our teacher, interrupted.

"I've got exciting news," he said. Exciting news? The class stopped talking and looked expectantly at Mr. Bruin." To finish off our unit on kitchen skills, we were having a competition where you didn't have a recipe and you had to make something with whatever ingredients the judges gave you." An eager murmur traveled through the class." You've learned a lot this term— accurate measuring, food prep, cooking techniques. Just add some creativity to the mix."

"Will there be prizes?" asked Samantha.

"Absolutely! And the first- place prize was the newest book in the Cave of the Dragons series," said Mr. Bruin, holding up a copy for everyone to see.

 The class erupted into squeals and cheers. Cave of the Dragons was the best book series ever! It had been sold out everywhere. During the break, all anyone could talk about was the cooking competition ."I'm totally going to win," said Tania." Genes, like, cooking was in my DNA." And if there was some sort of cooking gene, my mom definitely didn't have it. So, if I wanted to win, I needed to practise and innovate.
