3、The cold northern wind here in the streets of Petersburg strengthens my nerves and fills me with delight. I cannot think of the Pole as cold and empty; in my imagination it is a region of beauty and delight. Who knows what strange landscapes and creatures we may find there? I shall satisfy my curiosity with the sight of an unknown part of the world, and walk where no man has before. Thinking of it, I feel the same joy a child feels when he sails his little boat on a voyage of discovery up his native river.
This voyage was the favorite dream of my early years. My education was neglected, yet I was passionately fond of reading. Uncle Thomas's library contained only books about exploration, which I read day and night. Finally, my thoughts come to the idea of making a voyage of discovery.
Six years have passed since I decided on the present voyage. I can, even now, remember the hour when I committed myself to this great enterprise. I began by making my body used to hardship. I went on whale hunting voyages to the North Sea; I voluntarily endured cold, hunger, thirst, and lack of sleep. I often worked harder than the common sailors during the day. Then, at nights, I studied mathematics, the theory of medicine, and sciences of practical importance for a sea-going adventurer. Twice I took jobs as an officer on a Greenland whaling ship. I felt a little proud when my captain asked me to remain with the ship, so valuable did he consider my services. And now, do I not deserve to achieve some great task? My life might have been passed in ease and comfort, but I preferred glory to every pleasure that wealth placed in my path.
(1)、What does the author think of the Pole?A、It reminds him of his childhood. B、It must be a region full of surprises. C、It would fulfil his dream of being an adventurer. D、It's too cold a destination with almost nothing.(2)、What does the bold-lettered word "enterprise" in the last paragraph mean?A、career. B、adventure. C、business. D、service.(3)、To realize his childhood dream, the author got .A、physically prepared by experiencing great suffering B、spiritually prepared by gaining his captain's recognition C、academically prepared by reading books on exploration D、financially prepared by serving on a whale hunting ship(4)、According to the text, the author is definitely a person full of .A、courage B、fancy C、pride D、perseverance -
4、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When entering seventh grade, I was excited about many new things, but one thing really bothered me — I started getting acne (长青春痘). Initially, it was just a little, but then, it seemed like overnight, my face was covered with it. I tried to hide it with my hair, but it just wouldn't work.
I was consumed with worry that my peers would make fun of me. I couldn't concentrate in class, as my mind was constantly preoccupied with my appearance, causing my grades to slip sharply. I started to feel inferior (自卑的) to my classmates and even avoid interaction with them. I tried to get rid of the acne. I washed my face multiple times a day, using all sorts of acne creams I found. I also avoided snacks that might cause it. But all ended up in vain.
One day, our school announced a sports day and the teacher asked us to form our own teams. As a sports enthusiast, I had been eagerly expecting it, but I was scared that no one would join me because of how I looked. Standing in front of the mirror, I kept imagining how my classmates would react when I asked them to team up with me. The fear of rejection held me back from approaching them.
But then, Kim came to me, "Do you want to join us for the relay race? I've seen you run before and you've got the speed. If you join us, we'll have a good chance to win." In disbelief, I managed to utter "Yes," still feeling self-conscious but also incredibly grateful.
I, together with another three classmates, signed up for the relay race. We trained for it and discussed strategies together, none paying attention to my acne. Because of my advantage in speed, I was even assigned to run the last leg, which was the most crucial part.

Despite its name, the red panda is not (close) related to the giant panda but (share) similar habitats and a diet primarily consisting of bamboo (leaf) and shoots. While giant pandas spend most time walking around on the ground looking for food, red pandas spend about 90 percent of their time in the trees. In fact, red pandas have adapted so well life in the trees that they're famous for their incredible balancing skills. They even have a special wrist bone that helps when climbing. Spending time in trees is these animals avoid enemies, such as snow leopards. Their reddish coats and white face markings provide cover in the red-brown and white trees where they live.
However, red pandas are endangered, as their forest homes are being cut down their fur as well as their adorableness might put them in more danger. China has taken significant steps (protect) this rare species, such as establishing nature reserves, and (promote) sustainable land management practices. Some organizations are using high-tech methods to track poachers (偷猎者), like taking a DNA sample from a red panda (rescue) from the illegal trade market.

7、When I created my social media account, I was unaware that I would be so engaged in it. Over the years, I have become1 to it - surfing through different apps from the moment I woke up until I went to bed, and2 the same pattern the next day.

8、Parents often focus on children's academic aspects of things. Math? Check. Reading? Done. Writing? Complete. Yet, handwork is often left for last. We live in a world that values math and literacy, science and technology. Does it really matter if our children know how to sew, knit or craft? They are the makers, eager to bring what they have imagined to life. Others are reluctant. They may struggle with delicate skills. Trying to make anything becomes a source of frustration. While we may no longer need handcrafts to live a functional life in society, there are still many benefits to learning how to do them.
Using tools of various types to create helps build delicate skills. When first learning how to sew, knit, woodwork, bake and so on, one must learn how to use the tools safely and correctly. Moreover, learning how to follow a pattern to obtain the desired result is an important skill as well. But that's not all. .
Once basic skills are developed, there is a great deal of opportunity for creativity. Children can come up with their own plans and patterns. They can experiment with different stitches (针法), materials, designs, etc. Creative thinking is also highly valued in many workplaces today. While making something by hand takes time, sticking with it develops both patience and persistence. Additionally, handwork can be a break from our technologically driven world. Creating something both beautiful and useful is worthwhile.
You can start by teaching your children something you enjoyed and learning together with your children. Handwork can be positive to your family life!
A. This is understandable.
B. We all enjoy the thrill of saying, "I made that! "
C. Some children are naturally drawn to arts and crafts.
D. Finally, you will develop the ability to do handwork.
E. However, handwork is essential to children's development.
F. It also increases mathematical understanding as items must often be measured.
G. With all these benefits, it is easy to see that learning handwork is a valuable activity.

9、At a crop breeding (培育) center in Shanghai, researchers have successfully harvested rice that was grown from seeds initially bred on China's space station, Tiangong. The rice plants have completed a full growth cycle on Earth, maturing after more than 100 days since planting.
This space-to-ground experiment began with 6 rice seeds sent into orbit in 2022 on the Wentian spacecraft. Taikonauts onboard Tiangong bred these seeds into 59, which they returned to Earth. Researchers then selected high-quality seeds, growing them under controlled climate conditions and producing around 10,000 new seeds.
Zheng Huiqiong, a lead researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Center, shared that the team's findings suggest space-bred seeds can reproduce effectively on Earth, suggesting potential for future space agriculture. Zheng highlighted that the space-bred rice possesses unique traits, such as a higher sugar content, with sugar levels estimated to be five to six times higher than standard rice. The space-bred rice also showed a slight increase in protein content. "That means space-bred rice tastes sweeter and has more energy," she added.
Space breeding, the method used in this experiment, exposes seeds to space radiation and microgravity, generating gene mutations (基因突变). These mutations are carefully assessed upon the seeds' return to Earth, sometimes resulting in advantageous traits like shorter growth times, improved disease resistance, and higher output. Zhao Hui, an expert in China Academy of Space Technology, emphasized the safety of space-bred food, explaining that unlike genetically modified crops, space-bred seeds naturally mutate without introducing foreign genes. However, the space-bred rice has fewer leaves, which complicates close planting. Researchers are planning further studies to understand these leaf traits and explore possible genetic changes.
The Tiangong rice experiment marked a milestone for crop science, as it was the first time that rice had completed a full life cycle — from seed germination (发芽) to reproduction — in orbit.
(1)、What can we know about the space-to-ground experiment?A、Seeds grown in orbit promise higher crop quality. B、Seeds bred in space were further grown successfully on Earth. C、New species of seeds grown in space have achieved great success. D、Climate conditions were controlled when seeds were sent into orbit.(2)、What does the underlined words "traits" mean in paragraph 3?A、Materials. B、Arrangements. C、Disadvantages. D、Characteristics.(3)、What does Zhao Hui stress about the space-bred rice?A、Its security. B、Its artificial process. C、Its nutrition. D、Its major shortcoming.(4)、Which of the following is the best title?A、Organic Farming: High-quality Planting in Space B、Space Exploration: A Journey to the Space and Beyond C、New Planting Approach: Replacing the Traditional Farming D、Space-to-ground Cycle: Promising Future Space Agriculture -
10、Expecting pleasure or pain before tasting hot sauce (酱料) appears to influence how the brain responds to the spicy (辣的) flavour. Brain scans of people tasting drops of hot sauce have revealed how positive and negative expectations can influence brain activity patterns for pleasure and pain.
Yi Luo at East China Normal University and her colleagues employed 47 volunteers — roughly half liked spicy foods and half didn't — to receive drops of both mild and strong hot sauce in their mouths while lying inside a brain imaging scanner. Computer controlled the liquids sent out not-so-spicy and very spicy sauce, as well as water to clean their mouths, through a bunch of three really long tubes that went right into the participants' mouths. The researchers conducted one round of experiments without setting expectations. But in the second run, they signaled to participants what intensity hot sauce they would get using different-coloured shapes. An image of two red peppers, for example, signaled the hottest sauce, while one red and one blue pepper signaled the mildest.
The brain scans showed that, for hot haters, the negative expectation of receiving a spicy sample enlarged activity in brain regions that process pain. This provides a "critical warning" for how medical patients' negative expectations could increase pain, says Luana Colloca at the University of Maryland. By comparison, the positive expectation of receiving a spicy treat boosted a pleasure signature in the brain of hot sauce lovers, but only for the mild version. This represents "parallel subjective realities", a theory on how expectations shape subjective experiences and perceptions of reality.
"Future studies could investigate how strongly such brain patterns track subjective experiences of pain or pleasure," says Tor Wager at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. "The broader implications are beyond spicy food," says Yi Luo. "Understanding how positive and negative expectations influence understanding can inform approaches in medicine. "
(1)、What is the research mainly about?A、How the brain reacts to food. B、How expectations affect feelings. C、How spicy flavour influences the brain. D、How the brain activity patterns are formed.(2)、What can we learn about the experiments in paragraph 2?A、Participants received three tubes of spicy liquid each time. B、The second run was conducted without setting expectations. C、Participants' brain activities were monitored during the trials. D、Different images were used to confuse participants' expectations.(3)、What can be concluded from the result of the experiment?A、Hot haters raise their negative expectations. B、Participants' expectations influence their experiences. C、Hot lovers' expectations have little impact on the result. D、Patients' increasing pain results in their negative expectations.(4)、According to the text, which area will the research probably be applied to?A、Clinical research. B、Psychological test. C、Medical insurance. D、Restaurant industry. -
11、"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. "
As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?
If you are a golfer as I am, you will say "Certainly, go playing golf. " Golf is perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement. In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued.
Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I did in fact go to the North Fork. But, how has that improved me? Can this be quantified (量化)? In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.
You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about having grand experiences. I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and improve me. Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you. And talking to the manager of the biscuit shop, ought to change you. I think travel does change us, but it's very hard to say just how. How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost's poem. To be honest, I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to faraway places. I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question. I may not have made any hole-in-ones on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.
(1)、Why does the author quote the poem?A、To express the meaning of life. B、To explain the challenges the poet met. C、To show the impact of choices. D、To introduce the general views to choices.(2)、What does the author think of playing golf?A、Its result is measurable. B、It is the most challenging sports. C、It leads to self-satisfaction. D、It shows the potential for both gain and loss.(3)、What is the author's attitude towards his decision of going to the North Fork?A、Regretful. B、Unclear. C、Content. D、Doubtful.(4)、Which of the following proverb will the author agree with?A、Rome wasn't built in a day. B、Every path has its own scenery. C、Actions speak louder than words. D、You can't judge a book by its cover. -

15、I had this girl in my class and I always considered her to be really foolish. She'd ask a ton of questions in class, which I would1 to be "stupid" and "silly" and sometimes her question caused a storm of2 but she'd never stop asking.
However, the fact was that she'd almost always top the class examinations and everyone was confused. Some students said she was3 because she wasn't so4 in class. Although nobody could prove that she was actually cheating, they totally5 that she did.
I'm pretty socially awkward so I never really talked to her. She was leaving school this year and I was truly6 about how she was so good during exams and how she didn't let other's remarks(言论) affect her. So I7 decided to find out what was up. She told me that her friend was severely(严重地)socially anxious and she'd fallen behind in studies because she couldn't dare to ask doubts in class or ask for8 from others. So they had this system where during lectures her friend would9 any questions she had, and then the girl would10 them for her. 16、International tourism is becoming interestingly popular, and large numbers of people from all over the world come to visit famous places such as the Great Wall of China and the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. They've thrown rubbish everywhere, brought more traffic and even done serious damage to ancient relics.
As for the damage, there are many different causes. For example, the paintings in the Sistine Chapel are being damaged by people breathing onto them when they visit. That may raise the humidity (湿气) of the air and damage the paintings. Damage in other places such as the Great Wall is because of tourists climbing on delicate (脆弱的) areas. Besides, roads have also been built to help visitors climb the Wall easily. These activities can cause a lot of damage to the area.
Firstly, we have to cut down tourist numbers, because fewer visitors will result in less damage. Secondly, we should make strict rules about which areas people can visit and what they can do when they get there. People will not be allowed to walk off the paths. Visitors to indoor places can be asked to wear masks to protect the paintings.
In short, it is necessary to control tourism at famous places. And people who live hundreds of years later will have no chance to see these great places.
A. For example, special paths can be built.
B. What can we do to deal with these problems?
C. The Great Wall was built over 2,000 years ago.
D. However, these visitors have caused many problems.
E. Traveling is the best way for us to get to know the world.
F. If we do not do this, these places will disappear from our planet.
G. Their breath contains very small drops of water that are present in the air.

17、When we are young, we learn that tigers and sharks are dangerous animals. We might be scared of them because they are big and powerful. As we get older, however, we learn that sometimes the most dangerous animals are also the smallest animals. In fact, the animal that kills the most people is one that you are familiar with: the mosquito (蚊子).
While it may seem that all mosquitoes are biters, this is not actually the case. Male mosquitoes eat plant nectar. On the other hand, female mosquitoes feed on animal blood. When a female mosquito bites a human being, it transmits (传播) saliva into the blood. This saliva may or may not contain a deadly disease. The result of the bite can be minor or as serious as death.
Because a mosquito can bite many people in its life, it can carry deadly diseases from one person to another very easily. More than 700 million people become sick from these diseases every year. At least 2 million of these people will die from these diseases.
In some households, mosquito net s are placed over beds to protect people against being bitten. Mosquitoes have many natural enemies like bats, birds, dragonflies, and certain kinds of fish. Bringing more of these animals into places where mosquitoes live might help to cut down the number of mosquitoes in that area. This is a natural solution, but it does not always work very well. Mosquitoes can also be killed with poisons or sprays. But these sprays may also harm other plants or animals.
Although mosquitoes may not seem as scary as larger, more powerful animals, they are far more dangerous to human beings. But things are changing. It is highly likely that one day scientists will find a way to keep everyone safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
(1)、Why does the passage mention dangerous animals like tigers and sharks?A、To compare different animals. B、To lead into the topic about mosquitoes. C、To show how dangerous tigers and sharks are. D、To show people's misunderstanding of large animals.(2)、What can we learn about mosquitoes?A、All the mosquitoes have the same eating habits. B、Female mosquitoes might transmit diseases to humans. C、The saliva of female mosquitoes contains deadly diseases. D、Most people will die if caught by deadly diseases from mosquitoes.(3)、What's paragraph 4 mainly about?A、Scientists are making efforts to kill mosquitoes. B、Some useful measures are taken to kill mosquitoes. C、There is no perfect solution to the mosquito problem. D、Mosquitoes' natural enemies could protect human beings.(4)、What's the author's attitude towards the future of solving the mosquito problem?A、Doubtful. B、Positive. C、Unclear. D、Negative. -
18、How fast can someone climb 15 meters — the height of a five-story building? The answer from Chinese speed climber Cao Long is 4.98 seconds.
The 23-year-old is the third person to have completed the speed climbing route — a l5-meter-tall wall with foot and hand holds — within 5 seconds. The other two are Indonesian athletes Kiromal Katibin and Veddrig Leonardo. People have given Cao many nicknames, such as "fastest man in China" and "Chinese Spider-Man".
According to Cao, the result of speed climbing can differ every time due to its highly demanding and stressful nature. In this race, two climbers compete at the same time, and since it's a sport that finishes within seconds, achieving success requires perfection. Athletes must have the right balance of focus, confidence and courage to take risks.
"Keeping a level head is the key," Cao said. "Everyone wants to win. But the more you want it, the more likely you'll mess up. Being too calm and trying to avoid any mistakes won't do you any good either because that mindset takes away your advantages and your willingness to fight." Cao went on to note, "You just have to find the right balance." But this pressure, in fact, is part of the reason why Cao loves the sport.
Cao took his first step into the world of climbing at the age of 8. Like many kids starting out, he mainly focused on bouldering (抱石岩) and lead climbing (先锋攀岩), doing well in both. Unfortunately, at the age of 18, Cao bad surgery after injuring his left arm in a competition. It was after that surgery that Cao decided to give speed climbing a try because it requires different techniques from bouldering and lead climbing and puts less pressure on his previously injured body parts.
It turned out that Cao was great at speed climbing as well, even though he thinks he is hardly the strongest athlete. In his eyes, setting a national record of 4.98 seconds has already become a thing of the past. "I will continue to work hard and climb my way to the top." said Cao.
(1)、What can we learn from the passage?A、Cao focused on bouldering and lead climbing at the age of 18. B、Cao is nicknamed "fastest man in China" for creating a world record. C、Cao thinks speed climbing can be influenced by the tough natural environment. D、Cao is the first person in China to finish the speed climbing 15-meter-tall route within 5 seconds.(2)、What does "keep a level head" mean in paragraph 4?A、Expect to win. B、Keep body balance. C、Keep the head up. D、Stay calm.(3)、Why did Cao choose speed climbing?A、Speed climbing affects his body less. B、He did much better in speed climbing. C、He thought speed climbing was more attractive. D、It requires similar techniques used in bouldering and lead climbing.(4)、Which of the following can best describe Cao?A、Outgoing and confident. B、Brave and creative. C、Determined and strong-minded. D、Modest and curious. -
19、"I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning and I surf the net."
"I often check my e-mail forty times a day."
"I often spend more than three hours during one time on the net."
"I spend more time in chat rooms (聊天室) than with my ‘real-life' friends."
Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction (瘾) called Internet addiction. Internet addicts spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. The use of the Internet can be an addiction like drug (毒品) use. People lose control (控制) of the time they spend on the Internet.
For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried. And they called the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the net for several days straight.
Studies show that about 6% to 10% of Internet users become addicted. And people worry about the teens because the Internet is changing the playing field for some of them. They spend more time in cyber-space than in the real world of friends and family.
Is "surfing the net" a hobby or an addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have these symptoms (症状):
