12、The design theory behind a pair of tiny robots may one day find its way into environmental monitoring, as well as search and rescue tasks. Modeled after a water strider (水黾) , an insect, the two robots each weigh in at 8 and 55 milligrams, and may mark the smallest, lightest, and fastest fully functional micro-robots in the world, according to Washington State University (WSU) .
Developed by a team of WSU researchers, the robots' tininess largely relies on a material known as a shape memory alloy (合金) . Although shape memory alloys change form when heated, they can "remember" their original shapes and return to them after cooling. Because of this, the two micro-robots do not require standard motors, and they use light and small ones instead of bulky moving parts.
Both the robots'motors are each made up of two shape memory alloys, allowing them to move their fins as fast as 40 times a second while also lifting over 150 times their weight. "They're very technologically sound. The development of the very lightweight robots opens up new possibilities in micro-robotics," said Conor Trygstad, a material engineering PhD student and study lead author. "Although the robots are impressive when compared to other robots, the pair still fall behind their biological relatives'," Trygstad said. They can currently move at a speed of about six millimeters a second; a water strider, by comparison, speeds along at about a meter per second. For now, the robots also require wired (连线的) power sources, thus seriously preventing any real-world applications for the moment.
Going forward, however, the team plans to copy other small insect species while also creating a new water strider robot which can move at a higher speed. Depending on using small batteries could also greatly increase the robots' areas of use, If the breakthrough designs continue improving, similar micro-robots could one day be employed to monitor hard-to-reach dangerous environments.
(1)、What is the inspiration for the two robots?A、A special monitor. B、The lightest micro robot. C、An insect species. D、A search-and rescue task.(2)、What might Conor Trygstad agree with?A、Both robots can identify sound. B、Both robots need wireless power sources. C、Both robots work better than water striders. D、Both robots have weaknesses besides strengths.(3)、What can be inferred about future versions of these robots?A、They will completely replace biological insects. B、Their speed may approach that of real water striders. C、They will prioritize appearance over functionality. D、Their production costs will make them impractical.(4)、What is the main purpose of the passage?A、To compare robots with water striders. B、To introduce breakthrough micro-robots and their potential. C、To explain how shape memory alloys work. D、To show the limitations of current robotics. -
13、Elephants' important role in maintaining biodiversity and healthy ecosystems has earned them various names including ecosystem engineers and forest gardeners. However, African forest elephants — a species living in the rainforests of central Africa — are increasingly recognized by another name: "climate heroes".
African forest elephants help lessen climate change by increasing carbon storage in their forest habitats, meaning they help remove heat-trapping CO2 from the atmosphere. They do this by influencing the forest structure, including by increasing the diversity and abundance of plant species. It's estimated that one forest elephant can increase the net carbon capture (捕获) capacity of the forest by almost 250 acres. This is equal to removing from the atmosphere a year's worth of emissions (排放量) from 2,047 cars.
"As strange as it seems, all that eating and destruction help the forest pull more carbon out of the air," says Alison Pearce Stevens in the book Animal Climate Heroes! . Elephants eat more than 400 pounds of food a day, so they spend a lot of time searching for food. As they walk through the forest, they do a lot of damage to the surrounding smaller trees, leading to the survival of trees that have the ability to absorb and store more CO2.
In addition, their thirst for fruits also helps to promote forest growth. This is because elephants disperse fruit seeds. In other words, the seeds pass through the elephant bodies until they drop back to the forest floor.
But African forest elephants are seriously endangered and continue to face threats. These mainly come from hunting for the illegal international trade in elephant ivory (象牙), but also from habitat loss and fewer food sources. The number of forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a period of 31 years, and their habitats are thought to have reduced by 75%. Protecting forest elephants and the forests they depend on means we are safeguarding their ecological contributions that we all rely on.
(1)、How do African forest elephants help relieve climate change?A、They increase the diversity of wildlife species. B、They help to maintain the plants of the forest. C、They take in heat-trapping CO2 from the atmosphere. D、They promote the net carbon capture ability of the forest.(2)、What does the underlined word "disperse" in paragraph 4 mean?A、Consume. B、Preserve. C、Spread. D、Gather.(3)、What are the threats facing African forest elephants?A、Illegal hunting and habitat loss. B、The disturbed balance of the forest ecosystem. C、Natural disasters resulting from climate change. D、Competition for water sources with other animals.(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、Preserving Forests: Elephants' Contribution B、New Role of African Forest Elephants: Climate Heroes C、Ivory Trade Threatens African Forest Elephants D、Forest Elephants Are Approaching the Edge of Extinction -
14、Most people in their eighties would consider themselves lucky not to have health problems, but this is not the case with Toshisuke Kanazawa. The 82-year-old Japanese bodybuilder is not only in perfect physical condition, he also looks better than a lot of men a quarter his age.
Kanazawa is living proof (证明) that you're never too old to hit the gym and achieve the body you've always dreamed of. A champion bodybuilder in his youth, Kanazawa stopped exercising completely after he retired at age 34, drinking, smoking and eating whatever he liked. It wasn't until he turned 50 that he got his motivation to regain the perfect body of his younger years.
Kanazawa's wife felt sick frequently, and the former bodybuilder remembered that she had never been happier than when he won the national championship. So to please her, he decided to return to the gym and completely change his diet.
His workout schedule had to be adjusted to his age as well. In his youth, he would spend up to six hours training in the gym every day, and his body would recover within two days after a particularly intensive (强化的) workout, but that was not the case anymore. He cut the daily gym time to three hours and started giving his body one week to recover after exercising every muscle group.
Kanazawa's efforts paid off. In 2016, at the age of 80, Kanazawa defeated many opponents and placed sixth in the world in a contest for bodybuilders over 65, and won the admiration of the crowd.
Sport keeps this elderly man healthy, as he claims not to have suffered so much as a cold since he started bodybuilding again at age 50.
"I want to be a super old man in the bodybuilder community," Kanazawa said, "If I have a goal, I can continue moving forward. I have to work much harder."
(1)、What can we learn about Kanazawa from Paragraph 2?A、He started bodybuilding at the age of 34. B、He seldom exercised when he was young C、He had serious health problems in his childhood. D、He developed an unhealthy lifestyle after he retired.(2)、Why did Kanazawa decide to take up exercise again?A、To help change his diet. B、To cheer up his wife. C、To stand to his promise. D、To recover from illness.(3)、What did old Kanazawa do while rebuilding his body?A、He took the same workout schedule. B、He turned to the doctors for advice. C、He combined relaxation with exercise. D、He spent over six hours training every day.(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、Bodybuilding: No Age Limit B、Champion: The Result of Workout C、Exercise: The Best Medicine for Illnesses D、Understanding: A Guarantee of Happiness -

16、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
One afternoon, Tom's father brought home five healthy Rhode Island Red chickens and presented them to Tom. "If you take good care of them," his father explained, "I'll buy all the eggs they lay at market price. But remember, you're responsible for buying their feed." Thrilled at the opportunity to earn his own money, Tom immediately agreed, his mind already racing with plans for his new "business".
For the first few weeks, Tom was the picture of dedication. Every morning before school, he would carefully measure out the chickens' feed — a nutritious blend of grains and seeds recommended by the local feed store. He made sure their water was always fresh and their cage clean. The chickens, well cared for, rewarded his efforts with a steady supply of eggs—four or five each day. Tom would collect them in a small basket, and his father would pay him a fair price. Proud of his earnings, Tom started dreaming bigger. He made plans for a larger cage and even researched how to raise more chickens to increase his profits.
But as the weeks passed, Tom noticed something unsettling. The number of eggs began to drop — first to three a day, then two, and sometimes even just one. Maybe the chickens were just having an off week, he thought. But when the trend continued, worry set in. He examined each chicken carefully, checking for signs of illness or stress, but they seemed perfectly healthy. Confused and frustrated, he finally approached his father one evening after dinner.
His father listened quietly, then asked, "Think about it — have you changed anything in how you care for them?" Tom hesitated. Then it hit him. A few weeks earlier, he had decided to cut costs by switching to cheaper feed and reducing the portions slightly. He'd figured the chickens wouldn't notice, and the savings would add up. But now, his attempt to save a few dollars had backfired.
