The 2024 Peace Poetry Awards

The awards contest is to encourage people to explore peace and the human spirit. There are three age categories: Adult (19 & over), Youth (13-18), and Youth (12 & under). The yearly contest is open to people worldwide. Your poems must be unpublished, and in English.

Deadline

All entries must be submitted by July 1st. 2024.

Entry Fee

Adult (19 & over) — $15

Youth (13 - 18) — $5

Youth (12 & under) — no fee

Notes

1). You may submit up to three unpublished poems. At most 30 lines per poem.

2). Include name, address, email, telephone number, and age in the upper right-hand corner of each poem. For the Youth (12 & under) category, please also include your school's name and your teacher's name.

3). Title each poem.

4). Please keep copies of all entries as we will be unable to return them.

Life will be peaceful if you always do kind things. I teach my daughters to develop a habit of 1 others. The little acts of 2 give you chances to provide service for others. They can make you feel how 3 it is to be kind and helpful.

We 4 in a rural (乡村的) area. Most of what we 5 is beautiful nature. One of the exceptions to the 6 is the rubbish that some people throw out of their car windows as they drive along the rural roads. One of the few 7 of living here is short of 8 public services, such as rubbish collection, which is common in the 9 .

A helping behavior that I practice regularly with my daughters is driving around to pick up rubbish in our neighborhood. My daughters often have a 10 to see who can collect the most rubbish. They will often say to me in a(n) 11 voice, "There's some rubbish, Daddy－ 12 the car!" And if we have time, we will often get out of our car and pick it up. 13 it may seem strange, we do it. In fact, we 14 it. We pick up rubbish in parks, on sidewalks, almost anywhere. One day, seeing a stranger picking up rubbish or the road, I stopped. He 15 his head and smiled, "I saw you doing this with your family. It's a good 16 to protect our environment."

Josie and I wanted a dog more than anything else. Whenever we had time, we'd sit together and talk about dogs. "You're so silly, Jake," Josie would say. "Bulldogs（斗牛犬）are scary." "Hah. Golden retrievers（金毛猎犬）are scary," I'd say. We had this ongoing argument about what our ideal dog would be. But it made no difference—any dog would do, as long as it had a tail to wag and a friendly face.

One summer night, as we sat together beside the window, Josie saw something. "What's that?" she said, pointing to a dark shadow on our driveway. The moon was up and everything looked either black or milky. At first all I saw was darkness. Then the shadow moved and I heard the sound of metal. Then the shadow flowed out onto the silvery driveway. With a little fright, we found ourselves stepping down to the front door. There in our yard stood a dog—a big, black dog with long, shaggy（蓬松的）hair.

Josie made a little kissing noise and held out her hand. "Here, boy!" I said. And the dog came to us slowly, taking a few steps forward, and then a step back, not sure whether to trust us. When close enough, it had a doggy smell that always made me think of dirt and grass and piles of leaves. "Don't say ‘Here, boy'," said Josie. "She's a female." Pulling back and looking, I said, "I wonder what her name is." I felt for her collar while she sat patiently. I found no tags, but just a chain with a small old bell on it.

"I bet she's hungry," said Josie. "I can feel her ribs." I ran my hand through her fur. The dog was so skinny that you could feel every bone, and her coat was twisted and full of dirt. If she belonged to someone, they weren't taking good care of her.

The saying ‘All roads lead to Xianyang' may not be widely known, but it is the （true）in history. After Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, unified the country in 221 BCE, he began building state-level roads, Xianyang the center. Several long roads were therefore completed, （cover）a distance of about 750 kilometers, running through plains, mountains, grasslands, deserts, and finally leading to Xianyang, the capital city.

Like the Great Wall, these roads, （call）Qin Zhidao, literally the Qin Direct Paths or Qin Highways, are considered another miracle in Qin Dynasty. Generally, the roads were 20 to 60 meters wide and 50 cars could run side by side at the same time on their  （wide）sections. The firmly made surface （shape）like a turtle back above the ground to avoid standing water at that time. Another amazing fact is that grass （rare）grow on the road and many parts are still in good condition even today.

The mysterious ancient roads,  date back over 2,200 years and predate the Roman Roads by over 200 years, are known to be  natural museum in the history of road construction. Historians evaluate it this way: if the Great Wall is compared to a defensive shield （盾牌）, then Qin Zhidao is the weapon （guard）the stability and prosperity（繁荣）of the Qin Empire.

Joe works as a school teacher. Every New Year, he tries to bring 1 to his students. He usually gives books to his students. But this time, something completely different happened and Joe 2 this new idea to his mom.
