  • 2、Language learning is a journey that enriches our minds and connects us across cultures. However, there are several common misconceptions that can hinder many individuals from learning a language well.

    Be hard to learn languages.

It is only difficult to learn a language if you don't want to. What you mostly need to do is spend some time listening and reading. Believe me, it is that simple. I have done it many times. Soon you feel the satisfaction of understanding another language. Before you know it you start speaking.

Many believe that learning a new language requires a natural talent or an exceptional ability to memorize. This is a misunderstanding. While some may have an initial advantage, language acquisition is largely a skill that can be developed through practice, patience, and perseverance. In language learning it is attitude that determines success, not about having a "gift" for languages

Need to live in the native speaker country.

It's commonly assumed that immersing oneself in a foreign country where the language is spoken is the only way to learn a language effectively. While living in the foreign country can be incredibly beneficial, it's not the only path to fluency. In today's digital age, resources like language-learning apps, online courses, movies, music, and podcasts make it possible to learn from anywhere. Where you live is not a problem.

    Don't have time to learn.

How about the time you spend waiting in line, doing things around the house, going for a walk? Once you get started, even 10 or 15 minutes a day will soon grow to 30 minutes a day, or one hour. If you believe you will achieve great results, and if you enjoy doing it, as I do, you will find the time.

By recognizing and rejecting these misconceptions, we can embrace a more realistic, effective, and enjoyable approach to language acquisition.

    A. Have the language talent.

    B. Keep the interest to language learning.

    C. The following are some tips for you to follow.

    D. Learning a language takes time, but is not difficult.

    E. Why not use that time to listen to a language on your iPod?

    F. The key is to find what works best for you and stick to it consistently.

    G. Actually, it is not a big challenge to learn languages if we avoid these misunderstandings.

  • 3、"Earth" has always been an odd choice of name for the third planet from the Sun. After all, if an alien examines it through a telescope, he would note that two-thirds of its surface is covered not by earth at all, but by oceans of water.

However, most of the oceans on Earth remain unexplored. For example, photographers are fond of pointing out that scientists have mapped nearly all the oceans' surface, but less than a quarter of the seabed. Biologists think the oceans might host more than 2 million species of animals, of which they have so far identified perhaps a tenth.

A new project may change this. Launched in London on April 27th, 2023, Ocean Census aims to discover 100,000 new species of ocean animals over the coming decade. Its first ship, Kronprins Haakon, set sail on April 29 for the Barents Sea.

The project is launched for two reasons. One is that the longer scientists wait, the less there will be to study. "Top on our agenda are species thought to be in the greatest danger from climate change," says Oliver Steeds, founder of the project. "Otherwise, the forest is burning down and we won't know what was there before it is lost."

The second reason is technological. Biologists find about 2,000 new species a year, a rate hardly changed since Darwin's day. Ocean Census is betting that it can go faster. Fancy cameras on remote-operated vehicles, for instance, allow scientists to scan deep-sea creatures such as jellyfish without removing them from their habitat. Just as the huge pressures of the deep sea are deadly for humans, taking such a jellyfish to the surface for examination may reduce it to gooey slime (黏液).

Exactly what the new effort might turn up, of course, is impossible to predict. But history suggests it will be fruitful. Half a century ago, scientists discovered hot seabeds that were home to organisms living happily in conditions that, until then, had been thought harmful to life. These days, such hot seabeds are thought to be one possible candidate for the origin of all life on Earth.

(1)、What phenomenon is described in the second paragraph?
A、The oceans are home to most of the animals. B、The oceans have not been studied in depth. C、Scientists enjoy photographing the oceans. D、"Earth" is not a proper name for our planet.
(2)、What does Oliver Steeds most probably mean?
A、More efforts from scientists are necessary. B、Animals in the forest should be rescued, too. C、Climate change is endangering the forest. D、The project should start with threatened species.
(3)、What can we learn from the jellyfish example in paragraph 5?
A、It is mature to study the oceans now. B、Scientists should slow down their studies. C、It is harmful to study deep-sea animals. D、Researchers want more advanced equipment.
(4)、What does the author think of Ocean Census?
    A、Dangerous. B、Creative. C、Promising. D、Unnecessary.
  • 4、When I was a kid, my sister and I would fight all the time over nearly everything. But as we grew older, our bond strengthened by sharing secrets, offering advice and trading clothes. Having a sister by my side while growing up taught me many lessons about the unique bond.

And now, thanks to an 8-year long study that's making the rounds on the Internet again, science is confirming what I know is true. In the study, researchers discovered that having an older or younger sister can help ease the anxiety for kids between the ages of 10 and 14 years. They also found that people with sisters can "learn how to make up and to have control over their emotions again, which are skills that undoubtedly serve children well.

The revival of this study actually comes on the heels of another newer study, which shows that it's not just the older kids and parents who influence and shape children as they grow. It turns out that younger siblings do too, and what's more, they may also give their older siblings a greater chance of developing empathy (同情).

The Canadian study followed 452 pairs of siblings, all between a year-and-a-half and 4 years old. The researchers found that having a younger sibling increased the older sibling's level of empathy.

This research confirms that sisters are pretty amazing in making the world a much lovely place. As the mom of two boys, I often wonder what kinds of lessons they will learn from their younger sister. Perhaps they will be the same lessons I learned from mine that cooler heads always win. This study gives me hope that all those endless arguments between my kids may actually be laying the groundwork for conflict-settlement skills.

(1)、What did the author and her sister frequently do when they were young?
A、Share secrets and offer advice. B、Fight over nearly everything. C、Trade clothes without any disputes. D、Avoid each other's company.
(2)、According to the 8-year study, what benefit does having a sister provide to children aged 10 to 14?
A、Improved academic performance. B、Increased physical activity. C、Eased anxiety. D、Enhanced musical abilities.
(3)、What did the Canadian study reveal about the impact of having a younger sibling on an older sibling's empathy level?
A、It decreased their empathy. B、It had no significant effect. C、It varied greatly among siblings. D、It increased their empathy.
(4)、What's the main idea of the passage?
A、Siblings have a unique bond. B、Siblings have something in common. C、Having siblings is good to children. D、Children having siblings are considerate.
