The new review, by the University of Exeter and the University of Winchester, says zoos have made great improvements in recent years, but closer observation of animal behaviour - a method called Qualitative Behavioural Assessment, developed in farming - could show even more about their state of mind.

An animal's positioning of its body, facial movements and activity levels are among the things that might tell whether it is excited, calm, interested, nervous, relaxed, etc.

"Zookeepers are knowledgeable about their animals, and they will often recognise an animal's state of mind by its behaviour and body language," said Dr. Paul Rose, of the University of Exeter.

"What we are suggesting is a more scientific method of this, carried out over time.

"Certain behaviours will show certain moods (情绪) in an animal, and we should build our knowledge of this for different animals that live in zoos. For example, lions have a lot of facial expressions, and research on these expressions could help zoos understand the animals' state of mind. This information could then be used to improve welfare by changing diets, feeding times or any number of other aspects of the way animals are kept."

Dr. Rose carries out much of his research at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre, and is now examining how the swans (天鹅) there might show their state of mind through their behavioural expression.

"We're looking at how much time they spend exploring their habitat, which could show what they're feeling." he said. "When they're unsure, they appear to move less and be more careful, and draw their feathers (羽毛) close to their bodies."

The study suggests research opportunities for Qualitative Behavioural Assessment and practices that could be used by zoos. "Animal welfare in zoos has improved greatly in the last 10 or 20 years, and this method gives zoos another way to recognise and improve the welfare of animals," Dr. Rose said.

The preparation for this trip started a few months ago. I tried to prepare in the best way possible as this is uncharted territory for me. It will be the first hike really off the beaten path. I will not go into details until I get back and actually know what I am talking about.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you plan to hike in Sarek National Park. First of all, there are no huts (棚屋) or any accommodation. If you are at the heart of Sarek you will be at least a 4-5 days hike away from the next mountain hut. So this means I will have to carry everything I need for 8-10 days. The biggest part of the load will be food. There are no paths or waymarks. I will have to make my own route with GPS and maps.

In addition, the weather can be very challenging. Sarek is the area in Sweden with the heaviest rainfall. It is also known for strong wind and there're not many places to shelter from it because there are hardly any trees. It is important to bring professional hiking gear (装备). Finding and choosing a good campsite might take some time as well.

Jianbing is one of China's most popular street breakfasts. Every neighborhood has its own Jianbing vendor (摊贩) serving breakfast dawn through mid-morning, satisfying hungry (local) on their way to work.

Contrary to you might think, Jianbing is no grab-and-go street breakfast. To preserve the crispness (酥脆) of the pancake, the vendors never cook Jianbing in advance, so waiting in a line is part of the culture. But(basic), Jianbing is a breakfast worth waiting for.

Jianbing has a longer history than almost any other Chinese street food. It is thought to have originated in Shandong Province during the Three Kingdoms Period, military strategist Zhuge Liang had his soldiers cook food on shields (盾) (hold) over the fire.

Of course, if Jianbing were that easy to make, it would have taken the world by storm long before now. Part of challenge of copying the dish is that the recipe for a Jianbing differs from region to region, and even from vendor to vendor.

Many consider it (possible) to make your own Jianbing without months of practice and tuition from a master. Yet a few committed foreigners have made it, who (inspire) to bring Jianbing to a hungry audience after their first taste in China back in the 1980s. In the UK, twins Melissa and Oliver Fu, owners of Mei Mei's Street Cart are bringing the joys of Jianbing first to London and now Manchester despite all the difficulty they have in (perfect) their technique.

Treat yourself to a power bank

The batteries inside our phones are typically designed to last for around a day of moderate usage. So you're going to want some extra support so you don't end up going AWOL (absent without leave) when your phone dies. And finally, you need to get your apps in order. Once you reach your destination you'll need a mapping app, and maybe even a translation app — Apple and Google make their own version of both. And modern translation apps are particularly exciting. Then you get a clear translation. Make sure that all of the critical data is downloaded so that apps work offline and you can travel the world like a local. Bon voyage!

Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment, might be able to express empathy (同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care. Some even wonder if the rise of so- called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species' defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with social interaction.

One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980 and 2019, which shows that the empathizer must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions and distinguish themselves and the other person, grasping that the other person's feelings aren't their own while still being able to imagine the other person's experience.

On the first point, in recent years, AI- powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the sympathizer's response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation.

All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chatbots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend.

For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. "But that approach is temporary," says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, "Because mosquitoes are extremely tough little insects, and their populations can quickly rebound."

Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting warriors, which is a complete departure from traditional ways of controlling malaria.

To understand how it works, it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grows inside humans. It's passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. "If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease," he says. But making mosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a tough job.

To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes.

It turned out the malaria-fighting antibodies which gene-edited mosquitoes produced worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host.

James' team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be conducted on an island or in another isolated location.

But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. "There's no need to engineer a mosquito," says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that naturally occurring methods for reducing malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. "Why take unnecessary risks and release a species that can't be recalled once it's released into the wild?" she asks.

His interest in diversifying his skills grew after he stumbled upon a short video of traditional Chinese-styled dance on YouTube. "I saw it as an art that combines tradition and modernity, which was mostly the reason why I liked it," says Filippi.

Ever since, he has been closely following Chinese dance performers and watching numerous videos to learn more about the traditional style that he admires. "I prefer the traditional style because of its light movements. It also reflects my personality with elegance," he adds.

Filippi's chance came when he was invited to perform for a Chinese New Year celebration in the central Italian city of Florence. He has since fully committed himself to the art form, learning several pieces and putting his newfound passion into practice.

"The biggest difference that I found (compared to other disciplines) is the change of mood and emotional expressions among dances," says Filippi, adding that he needed to shift from the dynamic moves of hip-hop to the graceful and fluid movements of Chinese dance. Despite various obstacles, Filippi's efforts have not gone unnoticed. Two of his friends shared videos of his performances on social media, and the response was overwhelming. One video garnered 500,000 views, while the other received 200,000 views.

Filippi believes that learning about different cultures is priceless, and he sees it as a means of personal growth. "I like to think of a person as a book," he says. "Embracing different traditions and cultures, such as Chinese culture and many others, is like adding new chapters to my book, making it more diverse and wonderful."

We need volunteers who are good at expressing their ideas and feelings and are passionate about supporting people with complex disabilities to communicate and experience the world. We're also always looking for volunteers who have knowledge or experience of British Sign Language. You don't need to have previous experience of volunteering or nursing disabled people.
