  • 7、Tips on How to Be a Successful Student

Being a student is not easy. With a new identity, different duties appear. In order to live a meaningful and successful life, it is necessary to develop the right habits that help simplify learning and mastering the profession.

    Increase Your Self-Esteem

Do you think that scientists know everything and therefore easily deal with any problems? Every day some changes take place in the world. Experts rely on their own knowledge and experience in solving any problem, regardless of its complexity. Imagine yourself a world-class pro who is faced with a certain obstacle. What would you do in his place? Such role-playing games can increase your self-esteem.

When solving any task, connect all your abilities and feelings. Do not be shy of emotions. In this way you activate the maximum number of cells and muscles, attract the body to work to the maximum. The more feelings and possibilities you connect, the easier it will be to solve the problem. The brain will not only receive information from everywhere but also correctly process, record and use it.

    Be Active

All students can be divided into active and passive. Passive prefer to simply go with the flow. Active people try not only to prepare for each class but also to understand it, fight for self-development. This feature allows not only to quickly grasp new things and adapt but also to skillfully use the knowledge gained.

    Set a Clear Goal

Studying at the university, a student must understand why he or she needs it. For this, it is important to set a specific, understandable goal. The goal may be short or long term. After it is achieved, set a new goal and go for it. It all depends on the desire of the student.

    Learn from mistakes

The main thing is not to give up after the fall. Analyze the situation, think about what you did wrong, take advantage of this and just go forward. You need to learn from your own mistakes.

    A. Use All the Senses.

    B. Pay Attention to Emotions.

    C. In fact, it is simply impossible to know everything.

    D. Students, like all people, have both ups and downs.

    E. The goal may be to successfully finish exams or receive a degree.

    F. They are ready to participate in all kinds of meetings and competitions.

    G. You not only have to adapt but also have to finish all the tasks and promises in time.

  • 8、The internet provides access to a large amount of information. However, you might notice that the same ideas or views frequently reappear on certain social media platforms. If this happens, be cautious. You may be in what's called an information cocoon (信息茧房) — a space where only similar opinions spread.

This phenomenon, which has existed since the early eras of human culture, has been significantly enlarged by the widespread use of social media. Imagine ancient people gathered around a bonfire, sharing only stories and experiences that reinforced their collective worldview. Today, the internet serves as the modern "bonfire", with social media platforms connecting people globally and enabling the sharing of thoughts and beliefs.

You might have noticed that social media advertising seems to "magically" understand your interests, presenting ads that are surprisingly related. This is the result of complex algorithms (算法) — sets of instructions designed to perform tasks or solve problems. Every time we click, like, or share something, we leave a digital footprint that helps algorithms better understand our interests, values and beliefs. Algorithms then use this information to provide content that meets our interests.

Although information cocoons can provide a sense of belonging, they also bring some negative effects. Engaging with others only within limited information space results in one-sided individual's viewpoint, making it hard for them to accept different views and discuss complex issues. Information cocoons can also contribute to increasing division and anxiety, which further divides societies. They make it unclear between facts and opinions. This weakness leaves us open to misinformation, influencing both personal decisions and social energy.

Fortunately, there are many ways to break out of the information cocoon. Actively seeking diverse information sources is very important for overcoming these limitations. This can involve diversifying (使多样化) our social media content, reading articles from various views, and joining meaningful discussions with people from different backgrounds. Besides, training critical thinking skills is essential. We should check facts and remain open to changing our beliefs.

(1)、The information cocoon is increasingly becoming large because ________.
A、A great deal of information is provided. B、A growing number of people turn to social media. C、Various similar opinions spread in the information cocoon. D、Stories and experiences are usually shared in people's gatherings
(2)、Why does the author mention "algorithms" in Paragraph 3?
A、To analyze how social media impacts our preferences. B、To indicate how algorithms perform tasks or problems. C、To explain why we always read satisfying content on social media platforms. D、To show why algorithms are important in affecting our decisions and beliefs.
(3)、Which of the following is the negative effect of information cocoons?
A、A person sticking to his own opinion. B、A society filled with energy. C、A person willing to join in discussions. D、A society full of various views.
(4)、What does the author advise us to do to get away from the information cocoon?
A、Voice our own views openly. B、Develop critical thinking ability. C、Communicate with like-minded people. D、Search specific information sources.
  • 9、Exercise doesn't just help you lose fat. It could also promote healthier fat, according to a new study. "Living a physically active lifestyle makes our fat tissue (组织) a more accommodating place for extra energy under conditions when we do gain weight," said senior study author Dr. Jeffrey Horowitz, professor of movement studies at the University of Michigan.

To see how exercise impacts fat tissue, researchers compared fat tissue just under the skin from two groups of 16 people with obesity: those who reported exercising at least four times a week for at least 2 years, and those who did not exercise regularly. Those who had a history of regular exercise had fat cells which showed characteristics that increase how much fat they can store. It is important that the fat tissue under the skin has a greater capacity (容量) so that if a person does gain weight, the increasing fat can go there instead of more dangerous places, such as the heart or liver, Dr. Jeffrey added. "Unfortunately, most of us, even regular exercisers, gain weight as we get older. If we have a greater capacity to store that in our fat tissue, less of it will go to our liver, our heart, or other places that in excess (过量) can be really problematic."

This study shows that researchers need to learn more about fat tissue and how it is connected to health and lifestyle changes, said Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver. "Just being overweight may not be the whole story," he said. "The tissue used to be understood as only functioning to store energy, but researchers are just starting to learn it has many functions," Freeman said. "It makes sense to have some degree of fat so you have some reserve, but not to the point that the typical American has," he added

The key finding of the study is that healthier fat storage is just another good reason to live a physically active life. If you want to start, Freeman suggests trying out exercise first thing in the morning.

(1)、Why did the researchers conduct the study according to the passage?
A、To observe how fat issue impacts physical health. B、To examine the influence of exercise on fat tissue. C、To understand whether exercise can help us lose weight. D、To analyse the relationship between fat issue and exercise.
(2)、What can we learn about the study?
A、Regular exercise can help people store less fat and become fit. B、Regular exercisers are more likely to gain weight as they get old. C、Regular exercise causes increasing fat to go to places like heart or liver. D、Regular exercisers have a greater capacity to store fat in their fat issues.
(3)、What may Dr. Andrew Freeman agree with according to the passage?
A、A certain amount of fat is harmful to health. B、Further study is needed on the role of fat tissue. C、Weight control is the key to living a healthy lifestyle. D、Fat tissue has long been believed to perform more functions.
(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A、Weight loss: promote a healthy life. B、Fat tissue: consume extra energy. C、Exercise: help you store fat better. D、Health risks: lead to overweight
  • 10、For many people, the idea of moving to France usually connects with dreams of romance or the land of Michelin stars and cafe culture-food. US woman Jane Satow found both. Not only that, but she has also found work teaching locals how to cook in France.

Satow 56, left her home two decades ago to start a new life in southern French region. Coming from a family of farmers with a passion for the kitchen, she had a background in catering (承办酒席) before making the move, and her love of food fueled her ambition of one day moving to the French region known for its special menus. "My first jobs were in restaurants and I finally worked for several fine dining restaurants, which inspired my passion for fine food, wine and cooking," she tells CNN.

Satow attended a cooking school in Colorado, where she completed a course in French techniques and joined a "weekly wine club." Eventually, Satow met her handsome French partner, Christophe Daumas, in 2019 at a salsa dance class and says he really "swept her off her feet" like in a fairytale. She credits Daumas with helping her pursue a long-held desire to share her knowledge of food with others. With the support and encouragement of Daumas, she started looking for a place to buy to create a dedicated space where she could offer cooking classes. But in 2019 it had to press pause on repairs and opening the school during the pandemic. Though disappointed, she used the time to develop fresh recipes and test old ones in her new kitchen.

Her business, La Cuisine Provencal, finally started in 2021. She says she now has customers from all over the world, mostly travelers coming to Provence for the first time, but also locals.

It was a chilly December evening, and the streets were filled with the hustle and bustle of holiday shoppers. Emily, a shy and thoughtful eight-year-old girl, was walking with her mother through the crowded mall. They were on their way to buy a Christmas gift for Emily's grandfather, who lived alone in a small town a few hours away. Emily's family wasn't very wealthy, but they always managed to find a way to make the holidays special. This year, Emily had saved up her money for months to buy her grandfather a present. As they walked through the mall, Emily's eyes were drawn to a shiny toy train set in the window of a toy store. She had always wanted one, but she knew that buying it for herself would be selfish. Suddenly, Emily stopped in front of a small jewelry shop. In the display case, she noticed a beautiful silver pocket watch, engraved with delicate flowers. "Mom, look at that watch! Grandpa would love it, "Emily said excitedly. Her mother smiled and nodded, knowing that the watch was a bit more expensive than they had planned, but seeing the sparkle in Emily's eyes, she decided to make it happen. • 15、Self-management refers to self-control, which is a sign of inner power. There is no one easy or simple way to learn it, as everyone's mind works differently from another. Here's a list of ways to develop self-management skills.

    Have goals

If something is important enough for you, it should be written down somewhere as your goal. Whether it is losing some weight or finishing a course with a certain grade, having a goal to reach is important for your motivation. You can certainly have more than one goal.

    Set a schedule

Daily or weekly schedules give you more of a feeling that things are being accomplished (完成). Students who set schedules for themselves tend to be a bit more organized and aware of everything that is happening around them. For example, they usually like studying for a few hours now and then they can hang out with their friends later.

If you fail to hit your goals, adjust your goals to make up for your past mistakes. Take a step back and assess (评估) what you are doing and change it. It's okay not to reach goals, as long as you can acknowledge it honestly and make positive changes towards meeting your goals. But sometimes you just fall short. Knowing that it's okay and move on, you can pick yourself back up quickly.

The above self-management skills are essential for your development, which can truly change your future. So take it seriously and find ways to improve yourself!

    A. Be honest to yourself

    B. Assess yourself honestly

    C. But there are certain things that work for most.

    D. You can break it down to yearly, monthly, weekly, and even daily ones.

    E. As long as you have a clear schedule, it's possible for you to achieve them all.

    F. They're able to think in advance about what they need to accomplish now or later.

    G. This step is especially hard because you want to feel good about yourself and achieve your goals.

  • 16、Parents often think that their kids should be good at studies and do well in sports. That's usually the case because parents feel that could help their children go to top colleges. However, Melissa and Mark Wimmer think differently.

Their 14-year-old son, Mike, is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world's top IQ club. He completed his high school, associate's and bachelor's degrees all in three years. That's not all. He also ran two tech companies, founded a third one that works towards controlling the population of lionfish, an invasive species.

But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills. Melissa told CNBC that people expected "Young Sheldon" before they met her son. Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills. "But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he's just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things," said Melissa.

Mark and Melissa got to know about their child's intelligence when he entered preschool. A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different course to support his fast development. Many parents aren't comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds, but Mike's parents saw the value in letting their child go through it. "I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children," said Melissa.

The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use. "We let him order food when he's 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment," said Melissa.

Thanks to his parents, Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.

  • 17、As a child, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather's farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.

Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never agree because the walls were so old that some stones were loose and falling. However, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.

"I want to climb the stone walls." I said. "Heavens, no! You'll hurt yourself!" The response was just as I'd expected. But before I left the room, I was stopped by my grandfather's loud voice. "Now hold on just a minute." I heard him say. "Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself."

"Go," he said to me, "and come and see me when you get back. " For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls — and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I'll never forget what he said. "Fred," he said, smiling, "you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there's only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are."

Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. • 18、As the sun sets and the city is enveloped in the peaceful cover of night, a new trend (趋势) is rising quietly across China: the 24-hour library. In addition to staying open 24 hours a day, and featuring a wide variety of books, these libraries are equipped with comprehensive study facilities, including water, electricity, power outlets and restrooms. Some even offer soft drink services and dining options.

For Ye, a 25-year-old from Weihai, East China's Shandong Province, the local 24-hour library is an invaluable resource as she is preparing for the civil service exam. I can only devote myself to studying early in the morning or late at night," Ye said.

Similarly, Ma, a 20-year-old sophomore from East China's Anhui Province, often visits a 24-hour library in Huai'an. Forget your fear and just talk to someone. It might be easier said than done, but try to take a deep breath and voice. Don't be afraid to approach people. Introduce yourself and start a conversation about something you have in common. Sit in the middle of the classroom with as many new friends around you as possible.

    Join clubs.

Join after-school activities that interest you and make friends in the club. If you don't join anything, you will be just going to class and then going home. Being in a club forces you to be more social.
