  • 3、The cold northern wind here in the streets of Petersburg strengthens my nerves and fills me with delight. I cannot think of the Pole as cold and empty; in my imagination it is a region of beauty and delight. Who knows what strange landscapes and creatures we may find there? I shall satisfy my curiosity with the sight of an unknown part of the world, and walk where no man has before. Thinking of it, I feel the same joy a child feels when he sails his little boat on a voyage of discovery up his native river.

This voyage was the favorite dream of my early years. My education was neglected, yet I was passionately fond of reading. Uncle Thomas's library contained only books about exploration, which I read day and night. Finally, my thoughts come to the idea of making a voyage of discovery.

Six years have passed since I decided on the present voyage. I can, even now, remember the hour when I committed myself to this great enterprise. I began by making my body used to hardship. I went on whale hunting voyages to the North Sea; I voluntarily endured cold, hunger, thirst, and lack of sleep. I often worked harder than the common sailors during the day. Then, at nights, I studied mathematics, the theory of medicine, and sciences of practical importance for a sea-going adventurer. Twice I took jobs as an officer on a Greenland whaling ship. I felt a little proud when my captain asked me to remain with the ship, so valuable did he consider my services. And now, do I not deserve to achieve some great task? My life might have been passed in ease and comfort, but I preferred glory to every pleasure that wealth placed in my path.

(1)、What does the author think of the Pole?
A、It reminds him of his childhood. B、It must be a region full of surprises. C、It would fulfil his dream of being an adventurer. D、It's too cold a destination with almost nothing.
(2)、What does the bold-lettered word "enterprise" in the last paragraph mean?
    A、career. B、adventure. C、business. D、service.
(3)、To realize his childhood dream, the author got                .
A、physically prepared by experiencing great suffering B、spiritually prepared by gaining his captain's recognition C、academically prepared by reading books on exploration D、financially prepared by serving on a whale hunting ship
(4)、According to the text, the author is definitely a person full of                .
    A、courage B、fancy C、pride D、perseverance

School was out! I grabbed my backpack and headed to the library for my favorite weekly after-school activity: Writing Club.

"Hello, everyone," said Miss Lisa, our writing club leader. "Today we'll share our stories with a critique partner, who will give us helpful feedback (反馈) to improve them. Then submit your story by next week, solo or coauthored."

My partner was Penny. I was nervous. I had no problem coming up with great story ideas but struggled with spelling. And grammar. And punctuation. Penny, who always got perfect scores in those areas, didn't look at me as she pushed her story towards me. I read it without stopping. "Wow, great story," I told her, "I don't have any suggestions." She corrected some mistakes in my story hurriedly, and handed it back without looking at me.

"OK, time is up for today," said Miss Lisa. Penny looked relieved. She jumped up and grabbed her backpack. Bang! Everything fell out. She quickly stuffed it back in and hurried away.

I noticed a book under the table. The description on the back matched Penny's story exactly. I couldn't believe she had copied this idea!

Outside the school, spotting Penny on a bench, I walked over. "You dropped this," I said, holding out the book and raising my eyebrows. Penny's shoulders were slumped. She sniffed and wiped her nose on her sleeve. She was crying, "Didn't know what to write!"

All of a sudden, I wasn't angry anymore. I remembered my job as her partner was to give helpful feedback, not to make her feel bad. But what should I say?

I decided to ask Mom for advice. In the kitchen, Dad chopped vegetables perfectly while Mom stirred a sauce. She offered him a taste. "It's good," Dad said, "but I think..." "It needs something extra. I have an idea." Mom interjected. He handed her a measuring spoon. "To get the right amount." Mom added a teaspoon of a new spice.

I realized Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great team. With Dad's attention to detail and Mom's sense of adventure, their dinners turned out delicious.

  • 8、You are well aware that you truly desire to achieve good grades. Either your parents have put pressure on you, or you've promised yourself to perform better. However, you are constantly being distracted! You can cut out the distractions you have control over and minimize the ones you can't stop completely if you try the following tips.

When you notice specific distractions, you can block them out. Take note of this specific distraction and then tell yourself you are going to overcome it. The next time you see it happen, remind yourself not to look. Keep doing this every time the distraction comes up, and eventually you will no longer notice it.

Life can get really busy, so it's no surprise if you find yourself distracted from studying by thoughts about everything else. Rather than acting like all of those other needs don't exist, why not give yourself an outlet? Spend 5 minutes thinking about everything that's on your plate, but then tell yourself it's time to focus on the main task for now: studying.

Prioritize your studying by setting a main goal. For example, if you have a biology exam coming up that covers three chapters, you don't have to cram everything into one study session. Breaking things down and establishing just one primary aim will make your study plan more manageable.

Go off the network. Texting, social media, calls, and other distractions that come from our electronic devices are some of the biggest barriers to staying focused when studying.

If you do these consistently, you should find that you gradually spend less and less time being distracted.

    A. Set a study schedule.

    B. To be distracted is common.

    C. You should give yourself a worry break.

    D. Try focusing first on the parts that give you trouble.

    E. Luckily, the fix is easy and totally within your control — unplug yourself!

    F. If you keep your phone in another room, you're less likely to use it while studying.

    G. Say you're trying to study in the library and you keep getting distracted by someone texting.

  • 9、Most of us maintain an informal mental rank of our friendships. My friend R. went a step further by ranking his friends on a computer document.

The young man found himself dissatisfied with his social life — busy yet unfulfilled, and he built his friend list to diagnose why. He found that he had a small group of first-tier friends and a huge number of acquaintances. But the friends who caused him the most burden and stress were those in the middle ranks. Call them the "medium friends".

    R. told me about a certain friend. They were close during college but by their 30s, R. simply did not feel as connected to her as he once did. When this friend recently reached out for his support, his initial reaction was annoyance, followed by guilt. But she was pressing him in a way that felt too heavy, given what their friendship had become. He wrestled but did nothing. Emily Langan, a communication professor who studies friendship, described this as feeling guilty for not being more involved because they were just not that kind of friend.

Medium friends are genuine friends who share history or interests. They make you laugh or offer insights. But, unlike the closest friends, medium friends test the limits of your time, love and energy. There are so many dinners in a week, and so many people with whom you can be constantly texting. Medium friends prove it impossible to be all things to all people. And that is the problem with medium friends, the invisible lines you draw around them without ever being clarified — to them or even, possibly, to yourself.

Mutual sharing and caring in a context of trust is the foundation of every friendship. The tension in medium friendship is this absence of clarity, allowing for the possibility of what Claude Fischer, a sociologist, referred to in an interview as "asymmetric expectation": You may like your medium friend less (or more) than they like you.

(1)、Why does the author mention R.'s friend list?
A、To highlight the need to assess friendship. B、To remind us to keep a balance in friendship. C、To give an example of categorizing friends. D、To show us the possible problem with friendship.
(2)、How did R. feel when his medium friend asked him for help?
A、He felt she was asking too much. B、He was too ready to lend a hand. C、He was annoyed for not knowing how to help. D、He felt guilty that she wasn't a close friend.
(3)、What is the main problem with medium friends?
A、They provide limited love. B、There is a lack of clear boundaries. C、There are too many of them. D、They are less reliable than expected.
(4)、What does the underlined word "asymmetric" in the last paragraph mean?
    A、Unrealistic. B、Annoying. C、Unequal. D、Invisible.
  • 10、The dappled stars and swirling clouds (漩涡云) in The Starry Night are thought to reflect the artist's troubled state of mind when he painted it in 1889. Now, a new study suggests Vincent van Gogh had a deep understanding of how turbulent flow (湍流)moves.

Turbulent flow occurs in fluids like ocean currents and storm clouds, where big swirls break into smaller ones. "These swirls aren't random. They arrange themselves in specific patterns that can be predicted by physical laws," explained Yongxiang Huang, lead author of the study.

Huang and his colleagues examined 14 main whirling shapes in a digital version of the painting. The atmospheric motion in the painted sky cannot be directly measured, so they measured the size of brushstrokes and the brightness of varying paint colors. They discovered that the 14 big swirls match a physical law called Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence. The smallest paint mixes also follow a pattern known as Batchelor's scaling.

Finding both laws in one painting is rare, and it is such an amazing coincidence (巧合). Van Gogh would not have been aware it was physics, but likely he spent a lot of time observing turbulence in nature. "It must be planted into his mind so that he could make this famous painting so convincing," Huang said.

The team performed a similar analysis and detected the same phenomenon in another painting, Chain Pier, Brighton by John Constable in 1826. While it doesn't have clear swirls, its clouds show rich structures like those seen in the sky.

Scientists have long struggled to fully understand turbulent flow, which is important for weather forecasting, flight turbulence and many other processes. Even after over 100 years of study, defining this complex natural phenomenon is still challenging. Huang also noted that artworks like The Starry Night matching turbulence models might mean the statistical methods and tools are less precise than thought.

(1)、What is the main focus of the new study?
A、Van Gogh's troubled mental state. B、The artist's hidden talent for science. C、The display of swirls in the painting. D、The artistic value of the painting.
(2)、Which is a way researchers analysed the atmospheric motion in The Starry Night?
A、Predicting the physical laws in the sky. B、Comparing the swirls with their digital versions. C、Measuring the movement of brushstrokes. D、Examining the variations of paint colors.
(3)、What probably made Van Gogh's The Starry Night so vivid?
A、Awareness of capturing beauty. B、Insightful observations of nature. C、Complicated painting techniques. D、Scientific understanding of turbulence.
(4)、Why did the researchers study Chain Pier, Brighton?
A、To check their previous study result. B、To show they take the study seriously. C、To provide background information for the research. D、To confirm clear swirls are unique to Van Gogh's works.
  • 11、When I was a kid, I hated reading until eighth grade, when my mom said, "You are going to do your reading with me, from now on."

It was my first experience of being led through challenging books with an expert guide. Every few pages, Mom would stop and ask me questions that challenged my thinking about the text, drew me deeper into its themes and created a space to ask my own questions. And this is how I came to love reading — and came to be a professor of classic literature.

Most of my students who hate reading don't have mothers like mine. And one-to-one tutorial is impossible in my mid-sized university. But recently, in a conversation with a friend about ways AI might make museums dynamic and interactive, I thought about books. What if AI-enabled chat windows could be introduced in a text and offer a site of real-time conversation about it with someone as smart as my mom?

Then I started creating Rebind, an e-reading platform. I dictated 30 hours of answers to nearly 1,200 questions about Thoreau's Walden and asked another 1,000 reader-interesting questions. The work was dull: just me talking into my recorder. Then it struck me that being interviewed about the book might make it pleasant, meaningful and, most importantly, dynamic. So I invited Michael Goodwin, a Thoreau expert, to ask me questions. It worked. Michael, playing an inquisitive student, drew out insights I didn't even know I had.

This led to a key idea: if AI platforms use real conversations, about meaningful subjects, as their training ground, users are more likely to have rich, simulated (模拟的) conversations about such subjects. I tested this by interviewing the prizewinner John Banville about James Joyce's Dubliners, and the results were remarkable. The conversations in the e-reader sounded like, and reacted like, the conversations between Banville and myself.

I'd like everyone to love reading and use AI in ways that aren't meaningless or disappointing. In my heart, like my mother, I'm a teacher, and I believe this is one of the great teachable moments of our time.

(1)、Which best describes the author's reading experience with his mother?
    A、Theme-based. B、Challenge-free. C、Passive-listening. D、Question-driven.
(2)、Why did the author create Rebind?
A、To innovate teaching methods. B、To make reading interactive. C、To involve experts in discussion. D、To provide a platform for sharing.
(3)、Which of the following can best describe the author?
A、Creative and devoted. B、Patient and modest. C、Ambitious and skeptical. D、Reflective and reserved.
(4)、What is the best title for the text?
A、How will AI transform teaching? B、AI is the future of interactive reading. C、My reading experience with an AI-expert friend. D、How did I transform reading with AI?

  • 15、Ways to boost your chances of a good night's rest

Experts have found more evidence of the harm caused by disturbing our body clocks, linking it to depression and mental disorder. It's a warning to our body's natural rhythms, which influence our sleep as well as a range of other processes in our body. Here are the things we can do for a good night's sleep.

Limit evening light. Are you inseparable from your mobile phone? Do you check your social media late into the night? These devices produce powerful blue light that is particularly bad for our sleep. Having a cut-off time for stopping using these devices of an hour and a half before bed is ideal. We should also limit other forms of electric light after sunset.

A glass or two of wine, or a sip or two of brandy, for many is a pre-bed routine. But despite what you might think, experts say that a glass of wine before bedtime actually doesn't improve our sleep. Alcohol has a strange effect in that it makes it easier to fall asleep, but it makes it harder to stay asleep and it affects the quality of our sleep.

Be consistent. It may be tempting to stay up late on Friday or Saturday. This helps to reduce social mismatch between when we sleep during the working week compared with the weekend. The bigger the social mismatch, the more harmful it is for health.

Have a pre-bed routine. Having a pre-bed routine helps signal to our bodies that it's time for sleep. Activities such as reading a book or having a bath can help to mentally relax and get us ready for bed. Parents do this with their child to get good sleep. They have a set routine where they feed, bath their children and put them into bed.

Make your bedroom a place of rest. Easily portable computers and phones have transformed our bedrooms from sanctuaries (保护区) of rest into places of entertainment. But if we want to boost our chances of a good night's rest, we need to reclaim them for sleep. Keeping your bedroom cool is also important because it's easier for our bodies to sleep in colder temperatures.

    A. Avoid a night wine.

    B. Get a good night's sleep.

    C. If so, you're likely to be disturbing your sleep.

    D. There's nothing around them and then they read them a story.

    E. To do this we should keep phones and computers in other rooms.

    F. Our body clocks are designed to follow the rise and fall of our sleep.

    G. However, ideally we should go to bed at similar times throughout the week.

  • 16、If you live in Washington, D. C., or Redwood, Calif., you may have glimpsed a small, boxy robot rolling along a local sidewalk, minding its own business, but attracting the attention of many a curious onlooker.

The robots, which look like electric rice cookers with wheels, were part of a pilot program last year by Starship Technologies focused on delivering meals from local restaurants in dozens of cities around the world.

This week, the company revealed plans to broaden it's delivery service beyond food to include packages, a move that made it "the world's first robot package delivery service". The package delivery service is only available in some cities in the US.

The wheeled robots have a top speed of 4 mph and and can detect barriers from as far as 30 feet away. "The robot can operate through just about anything," says Nick Handrick, head of operations for Starship's D. C. office, "If you have something in the way, it's able to climb it." By giving customers control of when deliveries occur, Starship Technologies is promoting its service as a way to combat package theft.

To sign up for the service, which costs a little more than $10 per month, customers need to download the company's app. Customers then create a "Starship Delivery Address," a unique address inside a Starship facility, instead of a home address, where they can have packages sent from places such as Amazon. com.

Once a package is delivered to the Starship address, customers receive a text notice that allows them to schedule a home delivery via robot. The robots are opened by customers with a mobile phone code (代码).

(1)、What do we know about Starship Technologies company?
A、Packages are delivered by its robots all round America. B、Its robots have taken on package delivery for a long time. C、It is the first to provide robot package delivery service. D、Its delivery service is the best of all in the world.
(2)、What does the underlined word "combat" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A、Delay. B、Prevent. C、Report. D、Discover.
(3)、What can we learn about robot package delivery service?
A、Customers can't open the robots without a mobile phone code. B、Starship Delivery Address is the customer's home address. C、Customers have to pay a little more than $10 each time. D、Robots themselves have control over when to deliver packages.

A、Robot Delivery Service Is Taking Off B、Humans Are Being Replaced by Robots C、Everything Can Be Done by Robots D、Packages Can Be Delivered by Robots
  • 17、Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don't even notice that they're doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.

A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out (持久的) increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don't keep your legs crossed.

Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle . While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.

So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

(1)、What can we learn about crossing one's legs?
A、It is a very bad social habit. B、It is usually practiced deliberately. C、It can make others feel uncomfortable. D、It can do harm to people's health.
(2)、According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can ______.
A、resist gravity effectively B、affect your blood pressure C、lead to heart attacks easily D、improve the function of legs
(3)、The text is probably taken from a ______.
    A、health book B、fashion book C、geography textbook D、history book
(4)、What is the main idea of the text?
A、Give readers some advice. B、Compare common habits. C、Evaluate effects of an experiment. D、Introduce research methods.
  • 18、Both of my parents worked full-time when I was a little girl, so my grandmother would stay at our house during the day. We would watch game shows in the living room. Our favorite was The Price is Right. We would call out our answers along with the contestants.

When I got older and started going to school, we couldn't watch our game shows regularly. That was okay with me, though, because the one thing I liked better than watching game shows with my grandmother was helping her bake. Watching her in the kitchen was amazing: she never seemed to need the recipes but everything she made tasted delicious.

At first I would just sit in the kitchen and watch, even though I didn't understand what she was doing. As I got older, she let me help with the easy parts, such as measuring the sugar. The day she let me separate the eggs, I felt like I had found complete pleasure.

At last, my parents decided that I could take care of myself, and my grandmother stopped coming over every day. The love of baking, however, stayed with me. I started baking by myself, and even if the cookies ended up burnt sometimes, more often they turned out pretty well. I tried out new recipes, and whenever I got to a thorny part, I would call my grandmother for advice. Sometimes I would call her just to talk, too. I felt like I could talk to her about anything.

My grandmother passed away ten years ago, but I still think of her every day. Last week, I found a recipe book she made for me. It included her recipes for brownies, cookies, and my favorite, lemon pie. As I looked through the pages, I thought I could hear her voice. She was the one who taught me not just about baking, but about life.

  • 19、The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical — but it's a real ability that some creatures have. A family of African fish known as Mormyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it's hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish.

"We developed a new strategy for 3D motion positioning by electronic skin, bio-inspired by ‘electric fish'," says Dr. Xinge Yu, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. The team described their e-skin sensor in a paper published on November 14 in Nature.

The artificial sensor is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (发射器), which will generate an electric field once activated, and another layer acts as a receiver to detect both the direction and the distance to an object. A separate controller creates the driving signal to activate the transmitter. When an object comes within range, the electric field around the sensor is disrupted (扰乱), which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then processed by a microcontroller unit, which computes the position of the target object and sends that information to a smartphone or other devices.

A special biogel (生物凝胶) is used in the sensor, which has the ability to transmit and receive electric signals from a pattern of microchannels on the surface. The end result is a sensor that is thin, soft and flexible, making it cosy to adapt to irregular surfaces, such as the human body. In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing.

The researchers hope that this sensor could one day open up a new range of wearable technologies, including sensors for human-machine interaction and thin, flexible e-skin.

  • 20、Self-confidence is trusting in our abilities or qualities. It's usually seen as a good thing. But is it possible that we might benefit from a little less confidence in our beliefs?

For many years, Dr. Mark Leary, a neuroscientist at Duke University in Durham, N.C. , has studied the role of people's beliefs in their behavior. He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly 1 in 100,000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger. The good news is that there's a "vaccine (疫苗)" for overconfidence, and that's what scientists call "intellectual humility"— recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong.

A survey of 144 college students to measure their intellectual humility found that students who saw their thinking could be wrong tended to be more curious and more likely to seek out new knowledge. They ended up knowing more at the end of the day. But does it actually help you beyond that?

To find out more, Dr. Tenelle Porter at Ball State University conducted a series of studies with high school students. She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they'd change their study strategics to improve their performance and master the material for the next test.

Students who didn't see their knowledge could be wrong might instead just sail through their studying and wouldn't stop to ask themselves if they truly understood what they read, heard, or did. Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn't actually understand as much as they had thought.

Although it might be good for you, researchers recognize that questioning your beliefs can be truly hard. Still, it's important to remember that questioning beliefs isn't always about replacing old ones with new ones. If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking "baby steps."
