They give people in modern era insight into how ancient Chinese people saw the world around them and into how they expressed their observations (creative). As people were divided geographically, this well-developed writing system evolved into (variety) dialects and characters. It was not until Emperor Qinshihuang united the seven major states into one unified country, the Chinese writing system began to develop in one direction. 12、When I was a little boy, I loved drawing. I1 presented a new picture to my mother a few times a day at least. She would2 them up on the refrigerator as I'm sure all parents do, but she quickly3 space. When that happened, she would ask me to4 which picture we would remove to make room for the5 one. She would then take the removed picture and6 me she would put it somewhere safe — a great7 to tell little kids so they didn't suspect their drawing was destined (注定) for the trash can.
Decades later, my mother passed away from cancer, and I was8 for cleaning her home to prepare it to be sold. As I was9 the things in her room, I found a box stuffed full of paper. It contained every one of the10 I'd created as a kid, separated into folders based on how11 I was when I drew it. It was located near her bed table and had every sign of being12 on a regular basis. She really had saved and13 my terrible drawings all these years.

13、Hiking is a fun way to get some fresh air and exercise. Here are a few simple tips to make sure your next hiking trip is both safe and enjoyable.
Hike with at least one other person. Not only is hiking more fun with a friend, it is also safer. If you decide to hike alone, make sure that you let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. This way, if you get lost or injured, someone will know where to look for you and when to send help.
Have plenty of water. Even if you are only going for a short hike, it is important to have lots of water on hand so that you avoid dehydration (脱水). Plan to bring one liter of water per person per hour of hiking. So make sure to drink your water frequently, even if you are not very thirsty.
Wear correct kinds of clothing. You should wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes and thick socks. Your clothing should be comfortable and easy to move around in. Clothing that is too loose might catch on rocks or branches.
If you have not exercised in a very long time, do not try to go on an 8-mile hike up a mountain on the hottest day of the year, Instead, you should start gradually. First, go for regular walks in your neighborhood. Next, you should try to find places to walk on steep hills or rocky soil.
A. Don't take a too long trip at a time.
B. Make sure that your body is prepared.
C. You can begin to dehydrate before you even realize it.
D. If you get injured, your friend will be able to go and get help.
E. But clothing that is too tight might become uncomfortable as you walk.
F. If you are going on a long hike, you might want to bring an extra pair of socks just in case.
G. With enough practice, you will be able to take longer hikes across more challenging landscapes.

14、Body image affects women and men all around the world, In the new study carried out by psychologists at Durham University, the team set out to understand how body appreciation varies between women from different cultures.
"Most researches around body appreciation to date has focused on younger white Western women," said Louise Hanson, who led the study. "We wanted to expand the scope and include older women and other cultures as these groups have historically been not noticed."
A total of 1,186 women aged 18-80 were enlisted from six countries — four Western countries (Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US), as well as China and Nigeria. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires to understand more about their own sense of body appreciation and the pressures they experience around body image from family, peers and the media.
The results showed that all three groups had relatively stable body appreciation across ages. However, there were great cultural differences.
White Western women were found to experience much higher pressure from the media to meet thin or athletic body standards across their lifespan. This pressure did decrease with age, but even at its lowest, it was still higher than that for the other ethnic groups.
Black Nigerian women did not display a strong pressure towards a thin or athletic build and reported higher levels of body appreciation and far less media pressure regarding body image. However, they also reported higher levels of appearance pressure from peers, which reduced with age.
Meanwhile, Chinese women mostly continued to favor a thin body type across all ages. They reported the highest ongoing family and peer pressure around body image, but media-related pressure was less and decreased with age.
The researchers hope that their findings can encourage more cross-cultural studies to better understand the cultural dynamics that impact on body appreciation.
(1)、How does Louise Hanson's research differ from previous ones?A、It studies how body image affects the female. B、It has a wider variety of participants. C、It focuses on younger white Western women. D、It explores the influence of social media on body image.(2)、How did the researchers carry out the study?A、By conducting an experiment. B、By comparing different studies. C、By collecting data. D、By providing a set of questions.(3)、What can we learn from the research findings?A、Women from all six countries wish to be thin. B、Black Nigerian women suffer media pressure most. C、Body image pressure drops with age in all cultures. D、Chinese women have the highest media-related pressure.(4)、What's the purpose of the research?A、To better understand the impact of body appreciation on women. B、To display the differences between western culture and other cultures. C、To know more about cultural influences on body appreciation. D、To reveal the pressures that women in different countries suffer. -
15、Sorry rabbits, but giant tortoises are still winning the race of life by treating it like a marathon and taking each step slow and steady. Recently, the world's oldest tortoise, Jonathan, has turned 191 years old. This extends his title of the oldest living land animal by another year.
Unofficially, there have been claims of older tortoises, including one believed to have been 255 years old when it died in 2006. Researchers have not been able to pin down exactly what keeps them around for so long, but their slow-motion lifestyle may have something to do with it.
Giant tortoises have very slow metabolisms (新陈代谢), which means they burn energy at a slower rate than smaller and faster animals. Physiologist Max Rubner introduced the rate of living theory. The theory suggested aninverse relationship between metabolism and lifespan, which means that the faster the metabolism, the shorter the life. Scientists have had some issues with the theory over the past century, but it did produce the phrase "‘live fast, die young", and it serves as the basis for more research on the topic.
The link between metabolism and longevity (长寿) is still not understood. Some scientists believe that metabolism is linked to the creation of free radicals (自由基). They are the molecules (分子) that damage cells and that increase as more energy is burned by the body. According to this theory, tortoises live longer because their slow metabolisms bum less energy. which means less harm to the cells in their bodies.
Theories on aging alone don't fully explain how tortoises live much longer than humans, but their reproductive (繁殖的) life and size may give an explanation. Because of their massive hard shells and their geographic isolation (they only live on a few specific islands), giant tortoises have very few enemies to worry about. This means giant tortoises don't have to rush into reproduction to keep their species alive.
Each theory has its limitations and unanswered questions, but scientists believe that a combination of biological and evolutionary factors is what keeps giant tortoises alive for so long.
(1)、What does the underlined word "inverse" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Similar. B、Opposite. C、Clear. D、Unchanging.(2)、What can we learn about free radicals?A、Free radicals can protect cells. B、Free radicals increase with age. C、Fewer free radicals lead to a longer lifetime. D、The slower the metabolism, the more free radicals.(3)、Why don't giant tortoises rush to produce their young?A、They have little worry about extinction. B、They have a low reproductive ability C、They live a long time. D、They usually prefer to be alone.(4)、What could be the best title for this article?A、Live fast, die young. B、The way metabolism works. C、Jonathan, oldest tortoise. D、Secret to giant tortoises' longevity. -

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o'clock! Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn't expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the Phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, "Good morning!"
It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane's sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.
"Good morning, Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend?" Jane said and pretended to be annoyed. "Tom and I have been very nice recently." "My dear, today is your mother's birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother."
Hearing her father's words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother's birthday?!
While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn't been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.
She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
"Well, Dad, now I'm going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!" Jane said and hung up the telephone.

It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Daisy. Sure, it had been six months since she'd gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles, after all.
She was a beautiful lady, her fur a soft blend of brown, gold, and black stripes (条纹). Most importantly, she was a smart cat. I used to take her everywhere I could in a carrier (猫笼), and she was so clever that she learned to walk into it on her own, something I never thought a cat would do. At home, Daisy would enjoy a good nap curled up inside my parents' fireplace. We loved her so much that she was in the family's Christmas picture every year. So, we wouldn't like her missing this year's.
Dad always supported me, but he was so skeptical. He spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst despite the fact that he spent all six months looking for the cat. "She's either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her," he said. I rolled my eyes! He could do with a little more faith! Besides, though I couldn't explain it, I knew I'd see Daisy again. She'd been a stray (走失的宠物) when I found her — a tough little girl that had survived all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Daisy.
This Christmas, I was determined to pick up my search. I grabbed Daisy's cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she'd been found. My eyes scanned cats of all shapes and sizes at the shelter. Much to my disappointment, none of them was my Daisy. We drove through the town without rest, checking every shelter and asking everyone we could find, but each response was the same: no one had seen her. Finally, we pulled over in front of the last shelter in town.

As the internet advances, having to input a verification code (验证码) when (log) into websites has become unavoidable. Have you ever struggled to distinguish between an ‘I', an ‘L' and a ‘l'? have you ever been asked to click on the bus among nine different squares, feeling like you are being treated as a fool?
This verification method, including numbers, texts and images, is known as CAPTCHA system, which stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart". It checks users are human by giving tasks that are double for people but impossible for bots (机器人程序), which stops scammers (骗子) from using bots (misuse) websites.
CAPTCHA sounds completely positive to (human). However, ever since reCAPTCHA, a free CAPTCHA service, (launch) in 2007, people might have been working as "data annotation (标注) laborers" free. The verification helps digitize books, newspapers and old radio shows.
For example, reCAPTCHA shows users one word that can be recognized by a (scan) and one word that cannot, such as a distorted (变形的) word from a newspaper. If users get the first word right, the system trusts their answer for the second word. Therefore, by answering verification questions, the user is (manual) transforming paper-copy materials into digital text.
