  • 1、A new study from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) has found that tiny plastic pollutants floating in the air are settling in the lungs of birds. Researchers around the world are increasingly concerned that these harmful particles (微粒) are ubiquitous in the air we breathe and the food we eat.

Shane DuBay, an assistant professor of biology at UTA and co-author of the study, said birds were chosen for the study because they are found in almost every corner of the world and often share environments with humans.

"Birds serve as important indicators of environmental conditions," said DuBay, who collaborated with researchers from Sichuan University and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, both in Chengdu, China. "They help us understand the state of the environment and make informed decisions about conservation and pollution control."

DuBay's team studied 56 different wild birds from 51 distinct species, all sampled from the Chengdu Tianfu International Airport in western China. They collected lung samples from each bird and performed two types of chemical analyses.

They used laser direct infrared technology to detect and count microplastics in the birds' lungs. The study found high concentrations of microplastics in bird lungs, with an average of 221 particles per species and 416 particles per gram of lung tissue. The most common types identified were chlorinated polyethylene, used for insulating pipes and wires, and butadiene rubber, a synthetic material in tires.

While no official "safe" level of plastic particles in lung tissue exists, high levels of microplastics have been linked to serious health conditions, including heart disease, cancer, breathing problems and fertility issues.

"Our research highlights an urgent need to address plastic pollution in our environments, as these pollutants can have far-reaching impacts on ecosystem health, as well as human health," DuBay said. "Our findings call for further research, funding and action to reduce the harmful effects of plastic pollution and ensure a healthier environment."

(1)、What does the underlined word "ubiquitous" in paragraph 1 mean?

A、To address climate change. B、To promote bird conservation. C、To deal with plastic pollution. D、To study the effects of microplastics.
(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A、Birds are in danger — and researchers are alarmed B、Birds breathe in dangerous plastics — and so do we C、Birds indicate environmental health — and research is ongoing D、Birds share environments with humans — and pollution is everywhere
  • 2、Novel technology intends to redefine the virtual reality (VR) experience by expanding to incorporate a new sensory connection: taste. The interface, named "e-Taste", uses a combination of sensors and wireless chemical dispensers (分配器) to facilitate the remote perception (感知) of taste — what scientists call gustation.

These sensors can identify molecules (分子) like glucose and glutamate — chemicals that represent the five basic tastes of sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami. Once captured via an electrical signal, that data is wirelessly passed to a remote device for copying.

Field testing done by researchers at the Ohio State University confirmed the device's ability to digitally simulate (模拟) a range of taste intensities, while still offering variety and safety for the user.

Taste is a subjective sense that can change from one moment to another. Yet this complex feeling is the product of two of the body's chemical sensing systems working at the same to ensure what you eat is safe and nutritious, the taste and the smell senses. "Taste and smell are greatly related to human emotion and memory," said Jinghua Li, co-author of the study and an assistant professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ohio State University. "So our sensor has to learn to capture, control and store all that information."

Despite the difficulty involved in exactly simulating similar taste sensations for a majority of people, researchers found that in human trials, participants could distinguish between different sour intensities in the liquids generated by the system with an accuracy rate of about 70%.

Further tests assessing e-Taste's ability to immerse players in a virtual food experience also analyzed its long-range capabilities, showing that remote tasting could be initiated in Ohio from as far away as California.

While these results open up opportunities to pioneer new VR experiences, this team's findings are especially significant because they could potentially provide scientists with a deeper understanding of how the brain processes sensory signals from the mouth.

(1)、What is the function of the chemical dispensers?
A、To identify the five basic tastes. B、To control and store taste information. C、To allow remote taste perception. D、To enhance traditional sensor accuracy.
(2)、How do the sensors in e-Taste identify tastes?
A、By analyzing colors. B、By detecting specific molecules. C、By matching flavors. D、By measuring temperatures.
(3)、What challenge does the e-Taste face when simulating taste sensations?
A、It is not safe for users at present. B、It can't simulate salty taste accurately. C、It requires continuous manual adjustment. D、It can't copy similar taste experiences for everyone.
(4)、What scientific value does the last paragraph highlight for the research?
A、Advancing VR gaming experiences. B、Simplifying taste sensor production. C、Improving long-distance chemical delivery. D、Figuring out how the brain processes taste signals.
  • 3、As the founder of UK nonprofit The Esther Project, Lianne Kirkman, who works to provide shelter, recovery, and rehabilitation (康复) to women experiencing homelessness, has been at the forefront of her career for over a decade. But this year, in an effort to truly learn more about the lived experiences of the people her organization serves, Kirkman set off on a 10-stop tour across the country, meeting with other shelters and nonprofits — and sleeping on the street for 10 nights in a row.

Along her stops, Kirkman met with other nonprofits working to specifically support women facing homelessness. She started at her home base of Royal Leamington Spa on February 1 of this year and then traveled to Coventry, Birmingham, Bristol, Plymouth, Southampton, London, Doncaster, Hull, and Blackpool. She finally arrived back home earlier this week.

"I am so grateful for the fact that I can go home," she said. "It's been awful every morning thinking I can't go home and that I can't get in a bed. This has been one experience I will never, ever forget."

Women experiencing homelessness face unique barriers that often go overlooked. According to The Esther Project, 65% of Londoners in temporary accommodation are women. But many do not feel safe with those accommodations and those who cannot access them also face the dangers of street-sleeping, as well, leaving them with nowhere to go.

Kirkman's journey was meant to truly understand these realities. In addition to raising awareness, the 10-night sleepout has raised over £14,000 (about $17,400) for The Esther Project. It will go towards opening a new "one stop shop women's center" in Warwickshire.

Kirkman said she originally thought she'd raise £5,000, but the support on her journey was greater than expected.

"We are really amazed by the support we're getting," she said. "This was mainly a research project for me. This was about working out best practices for women, and I've been amazed by some of the fantastic organizations I've been to. You've taught me a lot," Kirkman continued. "I know what we need to do."

(1)、Why did Kirkman sleep on the street for 10 nights?
A、To compete with other shelters in fundraising. B、To test her survival skills in extreme conditions. C、To promote her nonprofit organization publicly. D、To experience homeless women's lives in person.
(2)、How did Kirkman feel after finishing her street-sleeping experience?
    A、Regretful. B、Relieved. C、Thrilled. D、Annoyed.
(3)、What issue do homeless women in temporary shelters face?
A、Safety concerns. B、Strict shelter regulations. C、Limited medical resources. D、High accommodation costs.
(4)、What is the main use of the money raised?
A、Providing direct financial aid. B、Expanding shelters nationwide. C、Creating a women's support center. D、Funding homelessness research.

Last year at Christmas time, my wife, three children and I were on our way from Paris to Nice.Somehow everything went wrong. Our hotels were "tourist traps" and our rented car broke down. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.

It was raining and cold when we went out to eat.We found a small restaurant poorly decorated for the holiday.Only five tables in the restaurant were taken. There were two German couples, two French families, and an American sailor, by himself. They were eating in stony silence except the sailor. He was writing a letter, and a halfsmile lighted his face. In the corner a piano player was listlessly (无精打采地) playing Christmas music.

All of us were interrupted by an old French flower woman through the front door. She had a worn overcoat and her old shoes were wet.Carrying her basket of flowers, she went from one table to another. No one bought any. Exhausted and frustrated, she sat down at a table.

The sailor finished his meal and got up to leave. Putting on his coat, he walked over to the flower woman's table.

"Merry Christmas, " he said, smiling and picking out a handful of flowers."How much are they?"

    "Two francs, Sir."

The sailor put a twenty franc note in the woman's hand.

"I don't have change, Sir, " she said. "I'll get some from the waiter."

"No, ma'am, " said the sailor, leaning over and kissing the ancient cheek."This is my Christmas present for you."

  • 8、To help out important insects like bees and butterflies, bus stops across UK are getting living roofs. Small gardens on bus shelter roofs are being planted with flowers chosen to help support the struggling insects.

Humans depend on bees and other "pollinators (授粉者)" like butterflies to help grow plants, such as flowers and trees. But with humans taking over more and more land for cities, roads and farms, more natural areas have disappeared. The Wildlife Trusts, a group which works to protect wildlife in the UK, says that the insect numbers there have dropped by 50% since 1970. Bee bus stops are a small step toward supporting these important insects.

The advertising company Clear Channel is working with The Wildlife Trusts and city governments to set up bee bus stops in cities across the UK. Bee bus stops are like ordinary bus shelters, but small gardens have been added to the roofs to attract bees and butterflies. The company plans to set up 1,000 bee bus stops in the UK.

Clear Channel already has bee bus stop programs in several countries in Europe. In the Netherlands, the city of Utrecht has 300 bee bus stops. Research shows that these bus stops— along with many other steps taken to support pollinators — may be helping. After decades of dropping numbers, bee populations in the Netherlands seem to have become more stable over the last few years.

The little gardens can also help to slightly lower city temperatures. Even though the bus shelter gardens are small, together they add up to a much larger area. Thirzah McSherry, who works for The Wildlife Trusts, says, "We're living through a nature and climate crisis and we need to use every tool we've got to deal with it."

    A、Losses of forests. B、Climate changes. C、Human activities. D、Natural disasters.
(3)、How does the author show the positive effect of the bee bus stop programs?
A、By analyzing the data. B、By making a comparison. C、By giving examples. D、By doing an experiment.
(4)、What is the text mainly about?
A、UK is building more bee bus stops. B、The city environment is getting worse. C、City should build more gardens for the insects. D、The bee bus stop is the best way to save the city.
  • 9、Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.

Jaramillo's students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast-food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. "The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks," she says. "They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful." Though some are scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt at first, most are eager to try something new.

Urban Sprouts' classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.

Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. "We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they're eating differently," Jaramillo says.

She adds that the program's benefits go beyond nutrition (营养). Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo's special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. "They get outside," she says, "and they feel successful."

(1)、What do we know about Abby Jaramillo?
A、She used to be a health worker. B、She grew up in a low-income family. C、She owns a fast-food restaurant. D、She is a founder of Urban Sprouts.
(2)、What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program?
A、The kids' parents distrusted her. B、Students had little time for her classes. C、Some kids disliked garden work. D、There was no space for school gardens.
(3)、Which of the following best describes the impact of the program?
    A、Far-reaching. B、Predictable. C、Short-lived. D、Unclear.
(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A、Protecting School Gardens B、Experiencing Country Life C、Growing Vegetable Lovers D、Changing Local Landscape

I couldn't forget the way I was frozen in front of the class today. My teacher, Mr. Liu had divided the class into groups to do speeches. Today was my turn. However, my hands shook so badly that I couldn't read my notes. My voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Liu kindly ended my part of speech even though I clearly didn't finish. He also asked me to stay after class for a moment.

"Betty, I know you are shy, but you worked so hard on this project. I'd hate to see you give up on yourself." Mr. Liu said, "If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find courage?" I nodded, grateful for the chance. I went as quickly as I could to my next class, keeping my head down and hoping the school day would end soon.

When I reached home that afternoon, I could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mum was baking(烘焙). She studied my face as I came into the kitchen. "What's wrong, Betty?"

Tears shone in my eyes. I told her the whole story. Mum was silent for a moment with her hands busy with the cake. "Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything but you can't talk to your class?" Mum asked. She set the time right and then said, "Let me show you something."

I followed her to the bedroom. There she showed me a book filled with pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon(丝带) that said "First Place" and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.

"I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn't easy at first—not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my tears. You just need to find your courage."

  • 14、Tips for Floodwater Safety

Floodwater can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes (蚊子) which carry diseases. You should avoid floodwater whenever possible. Here are practical safety tips:

    Avoid flooded areas.

Do not drive, walk or swim through floodwaters. It can be difficult to judge the depth of the water, and unknown dangers may be hidden by it.

Clean and disinfect (消毒) items that have touched floodwater.

Taking a dual approach to cleaning up after a flood is crucial. Cleaners remove dirt and grime, and disinfectants stop the growth of bacteria carried in floodwater. If you are cleaning areas that have mold growing, it's also recommended to wear a N95 mask.

Make sure the food you eat are clean.

Don't eat food that may have come into contact with floodwater. Even if the food is packaged, it could have been exposed to bacteria from the floodwater.

Polluted water can contain bacteria and cause serious infections. Follow water safety advisories to boil water before drinking or use bottled water. If needed, bring water to a rolling boil for one full minute to kill waterborne bacteria.

Never expose an open wound to floodwater.

During flood cleanup, there's a risk of developing cuts, open wounds or blisters, which could increase the risk of infection. Apply an antibiotic ointment (药膏) and cover it with a waterproof bandage.

Wash your hands often and thoroughly.

If you've come into contact with floodwater or objects that have touched floodwater, it's vital to clean your hands with soap and water or alcoholbased hand sanitizer (消毒剂).

    A. Make sure drinking water is safe.

    B. Clean wounds with soap and clean water.

    C. Don't allow children to play in or near floodwaters.

    D. Watch for symptoms like stomach upset and fever.

    E. Wear proper safety equipment like gloves and eye protection while cleaning.

    F. It also may contain harmful substances from agricultural runoff.

    G. Prepare an emergency kit stocked with water, food, and flashlights.

  • 15、Previously, the most readily available invisible ink was lemon juice. To use it, write with the lemon juice on ordinary paper, iron the paper with a hot iron and the hidden message will appear. The disadvantage is that the paper has to be destroyed to hide the message so no one else can read it.

Scientists have discovered a new kind of invisible ink. It is called water. All you need for this secret-messaging ink to work is to write with it on a super-hi-tech piece of paper coated with special chemicals. Shine a UV light on the coated paper and the water message becomes visible.

When the message has been read and needs to be hidden again, get out your hairdryer, and blow some warm air on the paper. Then the message will be erased and the paper can be reused, which keeps costs low.

The chemicals on the paper take in and give off light. The scientists found that putting water on the paper broke up the structure of the chemicals it was coated with. The water writing showed up darker than the surrounding paper under UV light.

Using hot air from a hairdryer for 15-30 seconds, you were able to reuse the special paper as many as 30 times because the heat reorganized the chemical structure of the paper coating. Without the heat from a hairdryer, the message stayed visible for up to three months.

The invention was made by a group of scientists in China, led by Qiang Zhao of the Institute of Advanced Materials, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

(1)、What does the underlined word "it" refer to in Paragraph 2?
    A、Paper. B、Ink C、Light D、Message
(2)、When you blow some warm air on the paper, the water message will ________.
    A、be read B、be erased C、become darker D、become visible
(3)、How many times can the special paper be reused at most?
    A、3 times B、15 times C、20 times D、30 times
(4)、What can be the best title for the text?
A、A Magic Hairdryer B、A Special Chemical C、A New Invisible Ink D、An Environment-friendly Paper
  • 16、Long ago, many people had gardens. Fewer people were interested in having gardens. But in the past few years, this has begun to change. More people are starting to make gardens again. People of all ages are learning the joy of planting. Maybe you would like to start your own garden. It's easier than you may think.

The first step is making some choices. What sort of plants do you like? What do you want to grow? Many people have flower gardens. People grow these gardens for the way that they look. They are pretty to look at. Flowers can have many shapes and many colors. Other people grow food in their gardens. They grow fruits and vegetables. These gardens are helpful. Some people like both types of gardens, so they have flowers and food.

After you choose the type of garden you want, you'll need a good location for it. The best place for a small garden is in a yard. One of the most important things to look for is sun. • 17、I'm now at a special university where 46 speech and hearing impaired (受损) students graduate each year. Every morning, I made it a practice of setting the intention (意图) in my heart of "May I be a tool for them to get what they need right now?".

Today, one girl came and sat down. I started with how we usually do. She can speak but cannot hear and lip-read. I asked one question, and she went on for 10 minutes straight, and in Tamil (泰米尔语). I understood a couple of words here and there, so I understood that she was not saying anything connected with what I asked. I just kept on listening to her without speaking a word. This went on for an hour and a half! Then, after a long pause, I told her to get back on track with another question. And then she shared for another half an hour straight! The whole time I was just looking in her eyes which would go here and there but come back to me. In the end, I just got up and hugged her and she was smiling wider.

Then I invited her to have juice with me. She said yes. What put me in a state of fear was realizing, just a few minutes later, that treating my new friend to some juice was the first celebration of my very first salary! A month ago, I started my first job, and what a blessing to have this important moment in my life be rooted in generosity.

(4)、How did the writer feel after treating the girl to juice?
    A、Glad. B、Regretful. C、Bitter. D、Grateful.
