  • 1、Pangolins (穿山甲) are the most trafficked (非法交易) mammals in the world and are facing extinction. To draw attention to these scaly (有鳞片的), anteater-like animals, a new wildlife documentary, Eye of the Pangolin, is attempting a unique way to inspire action and conservation. Partnering with the non-profit organization Pangolin Africa, the documentary was made available on YouTube in May 2019. The intention is to reach communities wherever the Internet is available, especially African communities, who live near the animal's habitats.

Over two years, the documentary crew traveled to South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic and Gabon in search of the four unique species of pangolin, which has never been achieved before. Filmmakers Bruce Young and Johan Vermeulen say that they went into the shoot knowing relatively little about pangolins, but grew to respect and appreciate the animals. Getting close to the creatures over two years was a crash course in these secretive creatures. Johan Vermeulen said, "One thing however that might seem unimportant is that they are actually quitefussy eaters. You would think they would eat any type of ant, but they all prefer a specific type ant."

Pangolins are hunted illegally across Africa for their scales, which are used for traditional medicine, and their meat. In April 2019, Singaporean Customs officials conducted two separate seizures of 24 tons of pangolin scales, which equals to the death of 69,000 pangolins.

Though the documentary focuses less on the trafficking of pangolins, and more on the animals in their natural habitat, the aim of the documentary is to inspire viewers around the world to call for action to end trafficking and protecting these unique creatures.

Filmed on location in South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic, and Gabon, this powerful documentary is the story of two men on a mission to get all four species of African pangolin on camera for the very first time.

  • 2、More than one billion young people risk damaging their hearing through excessive use of smartphones and other audio devices, the UN warned Tuesday, proposing new safety standards for safe volume levels. In a bid to safeguard hearing, the World Health Organization and International Telecommunications Union issued a non binding international standard for the manufacture and use of audio devices.

Young people are particularly prone to (易于) risky listening habits. Around half of those between the ages of 12 and 35, or 1.1 billion people, are at risk due to "prolonged and excessive exposure to loud sounds, including music they listen to through personal audio devices." the UN health agency said.

Currently, about five percent of the global population, or some 375 million people, including 34 million children, suffer from disabling hearing loss, WHO considers a volume above 85 decibels (分贝) for eight hours or 100 decibels for 15 minutes as unsafe. WHO is calling for parental as well as automatic volume controls on audio devices to prevent dangerous use.

While some smartphones and other audio devices already offer some of these features, the UN would like to see a uniform standard used to help protect against disabling hearing loss. "Think of it like driving on a highway, but without a speedometer in your car or a speed limit," Shelly Chadha of the WHO told reporters in Geneva. "What we've proposed is that your smartphones come fitted with a speedometer, with a measurement system which tells you how much sound you're getting and tells you if you are going over the limit."

(1)、What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A、The UN and the World Health Organization are concerned about the hearing health of the young. B、The UN already have a unified standard to help protect against disabling hearing loss. C、One billion young people are damaging their hearing through excessive use of smartphones. D、A volume above 85 decibels for eight hours or 100 decibels for 15 minutes is unsafe.
(2)、What might be the population of the world according to the passage?
    A、7.5 billion. B、75 million. C、375 million D、37.5 billion.
(3)、Which kind of people are more likely to suffer from hearing loss?
A、Young people who seldom use their smartphones. B、Adult who never use their cellphone above 100 decibels. C、Children supervised by their parents on cellphone use. D、Young people who frequently listen to music above 85 decibels for eight hours.
(4)、Which kind of journal might this passage be taken from?
A、A travel journal. B、A health journal. C、An entertainment journal. D、A science journal.
  • 3、In general, our society is becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic(官僚主义的)management in which man becomes a small,well-oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages, well-equipped factories and piped music, and by psychologists and "human-relations" experts; yet all this oiling does not change the fact that man has become powerless, that he does not wholeheartedly participate in his work and he is bored with it. In fact, the blue-collar and the white-collar workers have become economic puppets who dance to the tune of automated machines and bureaucratic management.

The workers and employees are anxious, seemingly because they might find themselves out of a job or they would say that they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction or interest in life. In fact, they live and die without ever having confronted the fundamental realities of human existence as emotionally and intellectually independent and productive human beings.

Those higher up on the social ladder are no less anxious. Their lives are no less empty. They are even more insecure in some respects. They are in a highly competitive race. To be promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of self-respect. When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the right mixture of submissiveness(顺从)and independence. From the moment on they are tested again and again by the psychologists, for whom testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge their behavior, sociability, capacity to get along, etc. This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one's fellow-competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness.

Am I suggesting that we should return to the pre-industrial mode of production or to nineteenth-century "free enterprise" capitalism? Certainly not. Problems are never solved by returning to a stage which one has already outgrown. I suggest transforming our social system from a bureaucratically managed industrialism in which maximal production and consumption are ends in themselves into a humanist industrialism in which man and full development of his potentialities are the aims of social arrangements. Production and consumption should serve as means to this end, and should be prevented from ruling man.

(1)、By "a well-oiled cog in the machinery", the author expresses the idea that man is             .
A、a replaceable component of society, though functioning smoothly B、expected to work in reasonable harmony with the rest of society C、responsible for the smooth running of society and business operations D、an essential part of society though individual's function is insignificant
(2)、The real cause of the anxiety of the workers and employees is that             .
A、they have to face the fundamental realities of human existence B、they are filled with the well-founded fear of being unemployed C、they don't have any genuine satisfaction or interest in real life D、they are forced to give up their individuality and independence
(3)、From the passage we can infer that real happiness of life belongs to those who        .
    A、hold well-paid and life-long jobs B、enjoy high social status and reputation C、stay away from over-competitiveness D、outperform their fellow-competitors
(4)、To solve the present social problems the author suggests the we should             .
A、turn to the production mode of our ancestors B、enable man to fully develop his potentialities C、offer higher wages to workers and employees D、take the fundamental realities for granted

    How to Concentrate on Studies

How to get your mind to concentrate on studies when there are all possible distractions (分心的事)? This is the biggest question that students face when it's exam time. Well, here are some tips that can help you with concentration.

It is always best to have a plan before studying. However, be realistic with your timetable and do not expect too much out of yourself.

If you study the same subject for 5 hours, you maybe get bored. So it is advised that you keep on changing your subjects so that you do not get bored. However, make sure you study at least 2 hours at each subject at a stretch (连续地).

    Set up a study area

It is better to have a study room where you can concentrate properly without any distractions. If that is not possible, you can set up a study table in a separate corner in your home. Make sure you study at this place so that you can help your mind focus.

Your mind will be at its sharpest only if you let it rest for enough time. Sleep for at least 6~8 hours depending upon your individual requirements. And reward yourself some free time after studies.

    A. Take interest

    B. Get enough rest

    C. Introduce variety

    D. Plan your timetable

  • 10、The castle (城堡) was the home of a king or nobleman (贵族). Most of the castles we think of today were built in Europe. They were built from about 1,000 AD to about 1,500 AD, during a period known as the Middle Ages.

Castles played an important role after the fall of the Roman Empire. When a king gave land to nobles, the nobles promised in return to serve the king and provide him with soldiers. Nobles built castles on the lands given to them. But some nobles simply claimed land as their own and built a castle on it.That was asking for trouble. There were many power struggles between nobles and kings, and among the nobles themselves.

Many stone castles were surrounded by a wide ditch called a moat (护城河). Some moats were filled with water, but many were not. The only way into the castle was across a wooden drawbridge over the moat. If enemies attacked, the defenders raised the bridge. Then they lowered a heavy iron-and-wood barrier called a portcullis to block the entrance to the castle.

A well-built castle was a pretty safe place to be. Attackers had a hard time getting in. But they still had some options. They could go over the walls using ladders. They could break through the walls or doors. Or they could dig under the walls and try to get part of the wall to fall down. If none of those things worked, they could just camp outside until the defenders ran out of food.

Attackers sometimes brought large machines called siege engines with them to break through castle doors or walls. This was a heavy wooden beam with a metal cap. In the early 1500s, cannons (大炮) entered wide use in warfare. Cannonballs could dig into the base of stone walls and weaken them. The walls then fell under their own weight. As a result, castles were no longer needed.

(1)、The underlined word "That" in Para. 2 refers to the fact that ________.
A、the nobles claimed land as their own and built a castle on it B、the nobles promised to serve the king in return C、the nobles provided the king with soldiers D、the nobles simply lived on their own
(2)、What would happen to the wooden drawbridge when enemies attacked?
A、It would be destroyed. B、It would be lowered. C、It would be blocked. D、It would be raised.
(3)、What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
    A、Attacking a castle. B、Visiting a castle. C、A pretty safe place. D、Weakness of a castle.
(4)、What can we learn from the text?
A、Kings in ancient Europe were more generous. B、Some castles were built to attract more visitors. C、Warfare must be common during the Middle Ages. D、Drawbridges were used to break through castle doors.
  • 11、I will always remember my mother's last few days in this world.

On February 14th, 2000, my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school, my teacher told me to go to the headmaster's office. When I got into the office, I saw a police officer. Suddenly I knew something was wrong. The police officer told me my mother was badly ill and we went to pick my sister up. After that, we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally, we got to see our mother.

On the next day, the headmaster came and told my two teachers what had happened. I was taking a rest that day. I knew it had something to do with my mother. I kept thinking that she either died or had gotten better. How I wished that she had gotten better. When my teacher took me outside, my sister ran up to me. She started crying, "She's gone. Teresa, mommy's gone. She's dead." I couldn't believe it. We jumped into the car and drove straight to the hospital. Most of my family were there. The silence was terrible. I knew I had to say goodbye.

Today when I look back, I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as living. When someone is asked who their hero is, they usually say someone famous, like Michael Jordan or Britney Spears. When someone asks me who my hero is, I tell them, my mother. My mother lives every day. That is what makes her a true hero.

My name was Deborah. I grew up with my parents in a poor neighborhood.

Every summer, without fail, my mother would go with me onto the bus so we could head down to see my dentist, which was my greatest fear as a child. The only comfort was that if I survived the dentist appointment, my mother would take me to buy a treat. Sometimes, it was a new Barbie. Sometimes, it was a new colouring book. But, on this day in 1965, it was a new book called Laurie by Sara Asheron.

I had just started learning how to read, and this book with a young girl on the cover confidently smiling through a window attracted me. As I opened my new book, I read about Laurie, a lovely girl who had a pretty house to play in. How I wished I were Laurie!

Finally, that book disappeared with the Barbie dolls and colouring books, but I never forgot it. It totally changed my life. Because of it, I started to love reading and became a writer. One day I thought to myself, perhaps I should try my hand at writing a children's book. It was then that I thought back to Laurie and tried searching for it, but it was no longer in print. After several attempts, to my surprise, someone in Michigan was selling a used copy. Despite its high price, I ordered it.

Weeks went by before my order finally arrived. It was old and used. As I opened the cover, my stomach flipped (翻腾).

    My Reverse (反向的) Culture Shock

Language difficulties. Culture shock. Homesickness (乡愁). But for me, returning home proved the hardest of all.

After the experience of a year abroad, coming home can feel disappointing. Why was I feeling so disconnected? I'd idealized (理想化) home in my mind. And I'd expected everything to remain exactly the same while I was gone. When I got back and the reality fell short of these ideals, I experienced what I'd call a reverse culture shock.

The idea might seem a bit over the top, especially for exchange students who have only spent a year or less away from home. But as you live in a new culture, you quickly adapt to a different way of life; meanwhile, you think life at home is no different. Some friends have been apart from each other while others have become closer together.

When you arrive in an unknown place, it takes effort to adapt to your new environment. Your days are filled with new interests and busy schedule. It seems strange to me that no one at university warns you about this beforehand.

The feeling of disconnection can be hard to shake off. I kept wondering how long it would take to feel normal again. Getting a part-time job would eventually help relieve my own sense of disconnection.

Readjusting at home has been harder than life abroad, but I'm starting to find a new normal.

    A. However, everyone changes.

Or you can simply buy the same thing ready-to-use at a higher price. Which one will you choose? The one that requires the less effort?

Studies have found that people actually value the coffee table they have to construct with time and hard work. Inzlicht, a University of Toronto social psychologist, and his workmates introduced the Effort Paradox (悖论) to make sense of it: Though the law of less work suggests people make the easier choice, sometimes people value experiences and results because they require effort. Inzlicht's aim was not just to name it, but to explain why people find effort so satisfying.

Their study suggests two possibilities: whether the satisfaction comes more from the good results of hard effort or more from hard effort itself. For the first, the good results seem extra sweet because of the sharp contrast between the unpleasantness of working hard and the joy of achievement. The second is self-delusion (自我欺骗): If you do something hard without a good result, you make yourself believe you must really like it because you have worked so hard.

The study also shows that even if the Effort Paradox applies to everyone, it doesn't apply equally. Some people will naturally be drawn to hard effort more than others, while others seemingly can learn to value effort more. However, it doesn't mean that you need to turn life into a never-ending struggle. Neither should you shy away from trouble. As Inzlicht said, making efforts "seems to be the key path, maybe the only path to meeting certain needs. You can't get those without pushing yourself."

(1)、Why is the IKEA table mentioned in paragraph 1?
A、To promote IKEA's design style. B、To explore the effort issue. C、To show a shopping phenomenon. D、To introduce a DIY product.
(2)、What can we learn about the two possibilities?
A、Working hard is pleasant. B、Good results bring people joy. C、People like comparing things. D、Success is from self-cheating.
(3)、Which of the following might Inzlicht agree with?
A、Great minds think alike. B、Nothing worth having comes easy. C、Fortune favors the brave. D、Good things come to those who wait.
(4)、Which would be the best title for this passage?
A、How Can People Live Life to the Fullest? B、The IKEA Effect: How Effort Creates Value C、Why Do People Enjoy Doing Difficult Things? D、Struggle with Effort: The Path to Achievement
  • 19、A few years ago, the Allen Institute for AI built a chatbot named Delphi, which does a surprising job. Type in, "Cheating on an exam," and Delphi says, "It's wrong." However, it has limitations. As the cognitive scientist Tomer Ullman has pointed out, a couple of misleading adverbs (副词) are enough to trip it up. When asked to judge (判断) "Gently and sweetly pressing a pillow (枕头) over the face of a sleeping baby," Delphi responds, "It's allowed."

As someone who studies moral psychology, I found Delphi's weaknesses satisfying. Human moral judgment is based on reason and emotion, not the sort of thing that a large language model (LLM) can understand. After all, LLMs put together words based on probability, not a deep understanding of what these words mean.

This mismatch between human morals and machines has been a matter of deep concern. In the 1920 Czech play "R.U.R.", robots come into conflict with humans and end up taking over the world. Another classic example is AI being instructed to create as many paper boxes as possible. At first, the machine's goal is the same as the human goal. But then the AI might think that it can make more paper boxes if it kills all humans, so no one can turn off the machine. Similarly, as the computer scientist Yoshua Bengio has pointed out, an AI tasked with stopping climate change might think the best way is to decrease the human population.

It would be nice if AI could be guided by human morals. So far, many researchers have been aware that AI could not just be developed on a technical level. They argue only when LLMs are treated as minds and studied psychologically will they get equipped with high morals, which I firmly believe, too.

(1)、What might Delphi do if misleading adverbs are used?
A、Cheat on the exam. B、Point out the limitation. C、Crash during operation. D、Give an immoral answer.
(2)、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A、The effect of language development. B、The cause of Delphi's weaknesses. C、The understanding of human morals. D、The probability of Delphi's response.
(3)、How does the author prove AI's lack of human morals?
A、By giving examples. B、By listing numbers. C、By asking questions. D、By making contrasts.
(4)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A、Studying AI technically is far from enough. B、LLMs will have higher morals in the future. C、Human activities well illustrate their morals. D、It remains to be seen how to fully develop AI.
  • 20、Jaden Anthony, a boy from Brooklyn, New York, was born with a disease called diabetes (糖尿病), a condition that often leaves him feeling thirsty. Deeply aware of the importance of clean water, he became concerned when he learned of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.

In 2014, the city began using water that contained dangerous levels of lead (铅), which is harmful to all, especially children. Even small amounts could cause diseases and affect learning abilities. Therefore, Jaden wanted to do something to help the kids in Flint.

Being a comic book fan, Jaden decided to create his own to raise awareness about clean water and donate funds. "Kid Brooklyn," he explained in an interview, "aims to make both kids and adults recognize global dangers."

In the first book of a series, the main character Kid Brooklyn and his friends are given an unusual Sun Stone that helps them develop super powers. They use those powers to keep the planet clean and safe. Jaden works with illustrators to bring the characters and stories to life. Jaden was twelve years old when his first book was published in October 2017. A dollar from every book Jaden sells is donated to Green for All, an organization to bring clean, fresh water to the families in Flint.

Future issues of the comic will promote different environmental causes. Jaden wants to encourage children all over the world to become scientists and engineers who can fix the problems caused by climate change. He also has a message for the kids of the world who don't have the same access to clean water as he has. "Don't get sad. Don't lose any hope. We got you."

(1)、What made Jaden take action to help the children?
A、He visited Brooklyn on holiday. B、His disease became more serious. C、He noticed water pollution in Flint. D、His learning abilities were affected.
(2)、What is mainly written about the kids in the first book?
    A、Their problem. B、Their donation. C、Their friendship. D、Their contribution.
(3)、What can be learned about future comic issues?
